CARD CRAZY

FOOTBALL FAN My son recently turned seven and every year I make him a special birthday card. As he is a huge Chelsea fan, I knew a r e d Rea footie-themed card CATHY would go down well! CLOWES I found a stamp I really liked but I had never tried stamping before and I wanted it to go right — so I practised until I felt ready. Then, I die cut some bunting and used a football embossing folder to add further detail. The final result in my son’s words, is ‘super cool’ and he told me he will keep it forever. This card would be perfect for so many young boys! We love how well you stuck to the theme, Cathy.

This month’s prize

I’ve been making cards for four years now and my husband often helps me craft. He loves r e Read getting involved in ELLEN the messy techniques, BELL such as stamping and painting, and that’s what it’s all about — turning a mess into a masterpiece! I believe the passion for papercrafting runs in the family too, as my auntie from Scotland enjoys it and sends me products she thinks I might like. Recently, my husband and I started a Facebook group showcasing our handmade cards — it’s going really well and we have a good following!

My newly married cousin and her husband bought their first home recently, so I decided to create a r e d a Re thoughtful greeting to SHABNEEZ wish them well. I had so KHANmuch fun embellishing MUZTAR it with bird motifs and using ink to outline the clouds. They were really impressed! What a lovely idea, Shabneez. The finish looks very professional.

That’s great news, Ellen! It’s lovely that you and your husband craft together.

Craft-a-holic

There’s nothing I enjoy more than settling down with my crafty stash and seeing what exciting r Reade projects I can come up CHARLOTTE with! I also love a bargain, PAULS from anything colourful and unique to cute animal designs. This greeting was an experiment as I usually stick to bright and elegant colours — however, I’m thrilled with the outcome. Flowers, fairies and bears will always be my favourite motifs though!

We love how well you have co-ordinated this greeting, Charlotte!

ALL THAT GLITTErS Designer Jenny Pearce tries out this sparkly new craft range

K

aisercraft has spoiled us recently with all the fantastic new collections it’s released, but one of our very favourites is the All That Glitters range. The beautiful designs are full of soft, feminine colours, beautiful florals, butterflies and that all-essential sparkle. The collection consists of an array of patterned papers, as well as stamps, stickers, die-cut elements and journal cards. Here, expert designer Jenny Pearce takes them for a spin and finds out what you can do with these soon-to-be-in-your-stash goodies.

New range!

TRIED & TESTED

I was really inspired by the All That Glitters collection, and I think it shows in the projects I’ve created from it. The stunning paper designs and die-cuts are perfect for pretty, feminine makes and the ornate frames add a lovely finishing touch to cards. The range is great for greetings, but also works brilliantly for scrapbook layouts and home décor items like my clock. I found the movement (£5) and hands (£1.89) at fredaldous.co.uk – I never knew making a clock was so easy! Pair your papers with Kaisercraft’s complementary stamps for a professional, cohesive look. I hope you’ll love crafting with this collection as much as I did.

You will need  Craft essentials (see p92)  Kaisercraft All That Glitters collection  Velcro dots  Clock movement  Clock hands  Punches: hole, flower, doily lace border  Glitter glue  Ink pad: black  Mountboard  Watercolour paints

papercraftermagazine.co.uk

CUSTOM CLOCK 1 Stick Shine paper to mountboard and cut around the edge of the circle on the design. When you reach the areas where the flowers are overlapping, use a compass to complete the circle and continue cutting out. 2 Punch a hole in the circle’s centre, large enough for a clock movement to fit through. Decorate the face with flower bunches from the Collectables pack at the 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock positions. Add butterflies to embellish and stick ‘Beautiful’ where shown. 3 Punch eight small flowers from the pink side of Gloss paper. Position these around the clock to fill in the remaining numbers. Apply glitter glue to all the floral elements, then leave to dry. 4 Cut out a butterfly from the papers, punch a hole in the centre and stick to the middle of the clock. Insert a clock movement from the reverse of the face following the manufacturer’s instructions, then attach the hands.

add two to the ‘Hello darling’ frame. Punch two lengths of decorative border from the bright pink side of Dazzle and glue where shown on the flaps. 8 Cover the middle panel with floral Glow paper. Cut an 8cm wide strip of bright pink Gloss paper and stick towards the right of the floral paper. Add a frame to a ‘Create your own sunshine’ sentiment and stick a third of the way up the pink panel. 9 Cut out two butterflies from the papers and position around the pink frame. Stick the remaining two stamped ones above and below as shown, then add glitter glue to the larger ones. Fix the card closed with Velcro dots under the overlapping flowers and the ‘Life is beautiful’ sentiment.

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL 1 Create an off-centre gate-fold blank by scoring vertically at 10cm on a 21cm x 30cm landscape piece of white card. Fold in, then score and fold the other side of the card to meet this point. 2 Cover the left side of the card’s front with the pale pink side of Dazzle paper, positioning the flowers at the top left corner. Add the bright reverse of the paper to the right-hand panel. Line the inside of both flaps with pale pink. 3 On the front of the card, add a strip of the paper’s dotty section along the pale pink opening edge. Mount a ‘Dream big’ sentiment onto the bright pink side of Dazzle paper and add to the left-hand panel of the blank

4 Tuck two lengths of ribbon behind the top of the sentiment, then attach a bow to the top. Add large flowers to the bottom right with foam pads, so they slightly overlap the opening. Apply glitter glue to all the flowers. 5 On the right side of the card, attach ‘Sweet’ and ‘Life is beautiful’ sentiments and an arrow, ensuring they overlap the opening. Stick two lengths of ribbon down the right-hand edge. 6 For the inside of the card, stamp ‘Hello darling’ in black ink onto spare white card. Cut into a circle and stick to the top of the left-hand flap. Add a circular frame and a ‘Smile’ embellishment. 7 Stamp four black butterflies on white card, then colour with pink watercolour paint. Cut them out and

A GIFT FOR LIFE Discover how scrapbooking can be more than just a hobby

N

o matter their age or interests, it’s not always easy to know what gifts to make for our loved ones to celebrate those special occasions. Whether scrapping is already your favourite pastime or you’re simply searching for a new idea, there’s no denying that an album filled with memories can touch the hearts of many. So why not use your crafty talent to create a gift that might not be at the top of their wish list, but is certain to become a favourite in an instant?

WORDS BY SAMANTHA LEWIS

STAR BUYS

DOS AND DON’TS Although images make up most of a scrapbook, captions, quotes and reflective sentiments are equally important. It’s a great opportunity to add thoughts and feelings to each page. Choose photos you know the recipient will like. Of course it’s amusing to sneak a few funny shots in, but when they look back at this gift in twenty years time, they’ll especially enjoy images that capture their beauty. Plan before you start sticking. Organising the structure of your scrapbook will help ensure you are happy with the final result. Try placing each image and embellishment on the page until the layout is to your liking, then glue. 78

papercraftermagazine.co.uk

As tempting as it is to use original photographs, wedding and holiday snaps are precious and usually one-of-a-kind, so it’s wise to make copies. Try not to go overboard with embellishments. Too much can distract from what’s key — the photos and sentiments. Also, over time gems and motifs may come unstuck, leaving unattractive glue marks behind. Sometimes, less is more. Resist cutting your images into intricate shapes. The outcome may look a little messy and you risk snipping off significant elements that add to the story!

BE INSPIRED EDITORIAL ASSISTANT SAMANTHA EXPLAINS HOW TO ACHIEVE SCRAPBOOKING SUCCESS... In 2010, I celebrated my 18th birthday and I must admit, I was pretty spoilt! Of course I was grateful for all my lovely gifts, but my most treasured is the scrapbook my best friend Sarah made for me. Now, six years on from when I first set eyes on the good, bad and truly embarrassing photographs, I still feel touched at how much thought and effort she put into my present. Here, I show you how Sarah structured the book to tell the story of our friendship, in hope that it will inspire you to create a gift that money can’t buy!

2003

Me and Sarah in 2015

HIGH SCHOOL

THINK ABOUT HOW YOU MET Sarah and I were lucky enough to be placed in the same form group at our school, and within a few months, we’d already labelled ourselves best friends!

{TIP}

It may sound obvious, but start from the beginning. Relive the tale of how you first met with heartwarming photographs and how you recall the encounter.

2006

A TRIP TO REMEMBER

2008

FAIRYTALE PROM

CAPTURE A FUNNY MOMENT On the way home from a school trip, the mini bus broke down and left my entire class stranded! We left the panicking to the teachers and instead, played games in a field and took photos in the glorious sunshine. We were rescued by the AA and all found it hilarious!

{TIP}

Think of a time you and your friend spent together that you still laugh about to this day.

2010 FRIENDS FOREVER

REMINISCE OVER A SPECIAL DAY After six years side-by-side, our prom night marked the last day Sarah and I would spend together as high school students, before we went our separate ways. We spent most of the time hugging and promising we’d remain friends forever!

{TIP}

Have either of you got married or travelled together? An event where lots of photos were taken makes it easier for you, and is surely worth documenting.

SUM UP YOUR JOURNEY I love this page. With a then and now photograph, a reference to our adorable childhood nicknames and a simple ‘I love you’, Sarah has shown how far we have come, how much we have changed and how nothing has altered our friendship.

{TIP}

It’s always worthwhile to end your scrapbook on a positive note or with a loving message. papercraftermagazine.co.uk
