floral fascinator Use your papercraft skills to create gorgeous occasion headwear

T

here are so many things you can make once you’ve mastered the basics of papercraft. This fascinator is easy and cheap to make and would be perfect for a fancy occasion. You’ll soon be looking fabulous for the fraction of the price that a shop-bought piece would cost. Here, Rebecca James demonstrates how to create beautiful paper flowers and turn them into a wearable masterpiece.

You will need  Craft essentials (see p92)  Dies: Sizzix Bigz Flower Layers #5, Sizzix Bigz Tattered Florals, Xcut A5 Flowers Set  Craftwork Cards Fab Fabrics Selection Pack  Straw fascinator base  Polystyrene balls: small  Tissue paper: patterned  Glitter: gold  Pearl brads  Distress ink

FANCY FASCINATOR 1 Follow the step-by-step guide (right) to create three large flowers using yellow papers. Place these equidistantly around the edge of a fascinator base. 2 Create pearl-centred flowers by die cutting two long petalled flowers from the Xcut set in pink patterned paper. Shape the petals and layer on top of one another.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO MAKE SURE THE FASCINATOR BASE IS COMPLETELY COVERED – USE SMALL DIE-CUTS TO FILL ANY GAPS

masterclass How to make a glitter flower

1 Paint a small polystyrene ball with PVA glue and sprinkle glitter across the surface. Leave to dry

3 Die cut a medium-sized Tattered Floral design from ten layers of tissue paper and a small one from blue spotted paper. Ink the papers’ edges, curl the petals of the blue flower and secure on top of one another with a pearl brad through the centre. 4 Crumple and ruffle the tissue paper layers, lightly brush the edges with glitter and leave to dry. Glue the flower to the long-petalled base. Repeat to make two more, then place one between each of the large yellow flowers. 5 Die cut three long petalled flowers from pink patterned paper. Pull up the petals of one, with the pattern facing outward, and curl them around each other to make a tube shape. Secure with PVA glue. 6 Shape the two remaining flowers’ petals and layer up before securing the tubular bud in the middle. Glue to the centre of the fascinator. 7 Shape a number of die-cut leaves and flowers from the Fab Fabrics pack and scatter them around the fascinator, making sure the base is completely covered.

Top tips

FOR CREATING ACCESSORIES  Practical makes need to withstand the ravages of the day, so be sure to use strong glue  Remember to use not only colours that you like, but ones that complement your outfit

 Don’t forget to think of practicalities, such as how you will attach the piece to yourself  Once you’ve made your accessory, store it carefully to prevent damage

4 Shape the petals of the two larger flowers and layer them up. Place the ‘V’-cut bloom on top and add the glittered centre papercraftermagazine.co.uk

modern scrapping Take inspiration from social media and create Polaroid-style memories

I

n this age of newfangled social media and digital photography, smart phone apps like Instagram are a really popular way of scrapbooking on the go. But where do the pretty papers and embellishments come in? Cue the lovely Lara Messer who shows us here how to channel the Instagram theme in everyday scrapbooking so that you can have the best of both worlds!

You will need     

Craft essentials (see p92) Photos Split pins Mini pegs Embellishments

HAPPY SNAPS As a photographer, I take photos daily that I love and cherish. Living in the digital world, we rarely print our images like we used to. I think of the times I would get photos developed or use my Polaroid camera, and decorate my walls or journals with them. I’d collect little pieces of memorabilia and attach them to the pictures to enhance their sentimental value. I miss the days of tangible memories.

SPECIAL MEMORIES Making scrapbook layouts is wonderful for keeping your memories and progress safe and beautiful. I love to print out my weekly Instagrams and find time on a Sunday evening to

put together a layout. I focus on the jobs I’ve had the pleasure of working on, travelling I’ve done and foods I’ve eaten. I love to document my life on Instagram and the pictures are the perfect squares to fill my scrapbook memories.

EASY AS PIE Creating a Polaroid effect is really easy and will fill you with

nostalgia. Simply print your Instagram pictures or trim regular photos to square, then cut out slightly larger rectangles from white card. Centre your photo at the top of the card, leaving a larger area at the bottom.

“I love to add dimension to my scrapbook layouts, which you can easily achieve with foam pads and small decorative items! LARA MESSER, DESIGNER

MEMORY PAGES 1 Start with patterned scrapbook paper as your base. Print off your Instagram pictures measuring 10cm square, or trim regular photos to this size. Cut out an 11cm x 12cm rectangle for each photo to create frames. 2 Adhere each photo to a card rectangle, leaving a larger space at the bottom than the top. Pierce a hole in the top of each one and insert a split pin. Position the images on your base paper using foam pads.

58

papercraftermagazine.co.uk

3 Print out captions for some of the photos using a typewriter font. Include your Instagram handle at the beginning if you wish. 4 Cut out each sentiment, some in banner shapes and others with ripped edges. Stick to the page with foam pads, adding pegs to a few of them. 5 For each layout, add embellishments such as shells, buttons and dried petals. Collect memorabilia from special days and incorporate them for a personal feel.

THESE PAGES ARE FUN TO MAKE FOR YOURSELF, BUT ALSO MAKE GREAT GIFTS. WHY NOT DOCUMENT A WEDDING OR HOLIDAY?

BEAUTIFUL BABY BASH Throw a baby shower the American way

I

t’s now becoming a rite of passage for Brits to host a celebration when someone close to them is expecting a baby. Although baby showers haven’t always been a part of our heritage, we’re being increasingly influenced by the country that makes every holiday and special occasion as big and bold as possible — the USA. If you’re the designated party planner, we’ve come up with some ideas to help make your list of things to do that little bit less daunting.

WORDS BY SAMANTHA LEWIS

✓ CHECK LIST THEME Selecting a theme is not only a fun way to bring a baby shower together, it also makes planning the party easier. There are endless design routes you can take. If you know the sex of the baby and want a simple option, why not try a blue or pink colour scheme?

INVITATIONS This is a great opportunity to work your crafty magic! There’s an endless choice of stamps and motifs you can use that make the process easy and affordable. We love this adorable stamp (top right) from createandcraft.tv. It would look great printed above this vital RSVP design (right).

SAVE PENNIES ON DECS!

Has your loved one already picked the name of their child? Whether you use a baby name, the mother-to-be’s or simply stick with ‘baby shower’, this bunting is easy to make and will look stunning draped above the present table! Image from gingerray.co.uk

TRY A… GENDER REVEAL PARTY Nowadays, expecting parents can choose to discover the sex of the baby before they welcome their little one into the world. Make the baby shower extra special by asking mum and dad to get their technician to write the gender on a slip and place it in an envelope. As the party organiser, you have the special task of taking a peek prior to the event and wrapping a blue or pink garment in neutral paper to be opened during the celebration. Everyone will love the surprise!

1

Cut out the required number of 10cm circle shapes from patterned paper. Print or write your chosen letters onto coloured card, remembering to leave plenty of space around the type. Draw an 8cm circle around each letter, cut out

2

and stick to the centre of each larger patterned paper circle. Make two additional 8cm and 10cm circles and secure butterfly motifs to the centres with foam pads. Create two holes at the top of each of the discs and thread through pink cord.

NEW BABY MAKE...

Most people opt for nappies, clothes and baby formula as gift choices, but something handmade is certain to stand out. A dainty mobile to hang above the baby’s bed is not only practical as it can help send them off to sleep, it’s also a thoughtful gesture that will pretty up a nursery. All you need is a wreath, thread and friendly-faced animal motifs. papercraftermagazine.co.uk

Crafters’ guide TO DECOPATCH S

o you’re familiar with the art of decoupage, but are you clued up about Decopatch? Here, designer Corinne Bradd fills you in on this exciting brand and showcases a unique garland made using some of its delicious products.

What is Decopatch?

This celebrated French brand offers a huge and exciting range of products for a successful and modern take on decoupage — it’s even becoming a generic crafty term! You can enhance and personalise any chosen object by layering it with your choice of Decopatch paper, then coating it with Paperpatch glue varnish. It’s not only a rewarding craft, it’s so much fun too. IT’S IMPORTANT TO WORK OVER ONLY A SMALL AREA WHEN USING DECOPATCH, TO AVOID THE GLUE DRYING BEFORE ALL THE PAPER HAS BEEN APPLIED

What products do I need for best results?

To become a pro Decopatcher, all you need is an item you wish to transform, varnish and a selection of stunning papers. The Decopatch patterns have been specifically designed so that when you apply the varnish, the colours do not run or fade. The papers are also strong, flexible and thin, so ridges will not form when each piece is overlapped. The varnish is essential for ensuring your papers remain intact and offers a nice glossy finish.

Who is this craft suitable for? The great thing about Decopatch is that it’s a fun hobby for all ages to enjoy. There’s no need to panic if you aren’t an experienced crafter, as the process is straightforward and with no expectations for neat edges, it’s an ideal craft that allows you to be creative. If you’re looking for a project to keep the kids entertained during the school summer holiday, they’re sure to enjoy the messy fun that comes with this craft!

How to Decopatch

1 To ensure the colours of the paper stand out, cover the blank with white acrylic paint and leave to dry

2 Tear the papers into 2cm squares. Paste glue onto the blank and lift a piece of tissue with the sticky brush. Place it on the blank and smooth down

3 Working on small areas at a time, continue applying pieces of tissue in this way, overlapping them slightly

Shopping List Decopatch Blue Floral and Pink and White Floral Paper, £3.79 each; Paperpatch Glue Varnish, £6.50 for 150g; Origami Crane Garland, £6.50, 0330 026 1400, hobbycraft.co.uk

4 Once dry, add a second coat of adhesive to seal, then hang
