FOREWORD Hey Papercutters, Welcome to the Papercut Magazine Art Issue! Historically, we’ve included a new artist in each issue of Papercut Magazine and we’ve seen so much amazing and talented artwork grace the pages of our publication that we decided it was high time to dedicate an entire issue to the visual arts. Art plays an integral role in everything we do. Our right brain allows us to see the world in new and unique ways, and it’s that new and unique vision which allows for growth, change and innovation. Not only is art the muse and drive of fields like graphic design, fashion, music and cuisine, but more often left-brained fields, like science and medicine, are looking to the arts to help them keep their vision fresh and their minds open as well. So with that, I am proud to bring you the artwork of 17 amazing, talented artists. We truly hope you enjoy the Papercut Magazine Art Issue!

“I want to paint everyday urban scenes that have some familiar subject matter, but painted through the eyes of someone from another dimension. I'm using color as value. I'm using alien color schemes. I'm abstracting scenes more. I'm not limiting my decision making to stay within the boundaries. 11

“Make something everyday. If you are not creating work, you can't call yourself an artist. Just like any craftsman, you have to put in the hours to get the good gigs. I don't see fine art painting as any different as any hand craft. It's a skill you have to hone.

“Someone once described my work as ‘narrative paintings, in which most of the plot is missing.’ I really liked that. There’s some realism in there, and the suggestion of a story, but nothing particularly heavyhanded or even premeditated.”

“I learned to oil paint by making portraits from photos of people I knew. I reached a creative plateau at one point, and a friend suggested ‘shake yourself up by painting something you don’t care about... I dunno, like, a bird or something.’ So I painted a bird, and then never stopped. I should add, however, that my father was a very accomplished carver of realistic, detailed wooden birds. I may think I embraced wildlife randomly, but I’m sure his influence was in there.”

“I want the viewer to feel nostalgic but also recognize that I am painting a time period of pre-adolescence, when curiosities turn into lustful discoveries and one is still passing notes in class and drawing hearts on notebooks. This time of life is exciting and full of romantic notions, but is also painfully vulnerable and isolating. The initial response may be light hearted, but there is an intent beyond all the horses and cake icing.
