2010 has been an exciting year for War Child UK, we have opened up an new project to help girls living on the streets of Kinshasa, expanded our work in Uganda to the remote Kaabong region and we were visited by former child soldier Juliette from Uganda. Meeting Juliette was inspiring for all of us here at War Child UK, she was keen to talk to the press about her experiences and wants to use her experiences to help others by training as a lawyer. War Child UK is a small international children’s charity which aims to protect children living in the most dangerous war-torn areas in the world. We are currently working in Afghanistan, Iraq, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda. We help rebuild the lives of the most vulnerable children who have had their homes, schools and communities destroyed by war. These children include; child soldiers, children living on the streets, those put in prison and girls at risk of rape or sexual violence, all of whom are often forgotten in the aftermath of conflict. Despite our size we make a big impact by teaming up with local partners and developing projects to; reintegrate child soldiers with their families, separate children in prison from adult detainees and provide legal aid, and get children off the streets and back into education or vocational training to provide future opportunities. War Child UK can make a little money go a long way; £10 ($15.80) can buy a school uniform for a street child in the DRC so they can go to school or enough school supplies for one child for a year in Uganda, just £125 ($197.52) is enough to teach a girl in Afghanistan tailoring or carpet weaving and £2,890 ($4,566.77) will pay a teacher’s salary for a year in Iraq. Not matter how small, a donation can make a BIG difference to many young people’s lives. War Child UK’s work on the ground is supported by fundraising, both from individuals, getting involved in various sponsored events and our friends in the music industry who have worked with us putting on gigs, releasing albums, singles and EPs and helping to spread the War Child message.
