FOREWORD After a fun and carefree summer, I like to think of fall as a time to renew and redefine—oneself, one’s goals and one’s style. Relationships change as quickly as the leaves, we start new classes and new fiscal years, and platform sandals and breezy tanks are packed away (at least until a mid-winter trip to Mexico). By October, we’ve given in to the fact that the dog days are behind us. With one eye on the transition to leather boots and leopard, and the other ahead on every fashionistas’ favorite holiday (Halloween, duh), October offers the opportunity to test your creative limits, in every sense. Papercut’s October issue is ripe with inspiration, if you find yourself in need. We pulled together some of our most bold and provocative imagery yet for another editorial-only piece. In keeping with the season, these pages are a journey between your angels, your demons and everything in between. The glowing skin and soft tones created by makeup artist Philippe Miletto for “In the Raw” (page 52) are about as ethereal as it gets,
while Paelo Pedrajas’ “Song of a Sixpence” (page 108) takes an even darker stance than Hitchcock on “the birds”. Halloween aside, the shoes, fur and royal blue hot pants in photographer Alvin Nguyen’s “Beautiful Monster” (page 76), two-toned eyes and lips by Jenny Kong (page 114) and over-sized knuckle rings (throughout) are all definite additions to my fall look, whether or not I can pull them off. We still have a long ways to go, baby, before the next lazy days of summer. But while we can’t soak up the sun, we can take in everything autumn has to offer—better to be in the moment, no? So grab a pumpkin spice latte and cozy up with a cable-knit sweater and the October issue. Start planning your party looks for the 31st, and let your mind wander through the photos and figures, undeterred by stories and text.
