“Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.”
Mrs. Margie Ree Smith was a gentle soul who was kind-hearted, sel ess and deeply loved by her family and friends.
She was born on January 20, 1950 the seventh of eleven children to the late Theodis, Sr. and Juanita Fleming in Oglethorpe County, Georgia where she was reared in a large family complete with love and joy. Margie had eight sisters and two brothers and she enjoyed a bond with her siblings. She loved her parents and honored them both until their passing.
Margie was educated in the Oglethorpe County School System. She excelled in her studies and graduated at the top of her class at Oglethorpe County Consolidated School. On August 5, 1968 at the age of seventeen, she married the love of her life, Mr. Charlie Smith. To this union, two children were born- Gregory and Keffory. Margie quickly became acquainted with her in-laws and lived with them while her husband served in the Vietnam War. She cooked for her father-in-law, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, developing a love and affection for them early in life. She would later join her husband in Germany where they lived and were able to experience a different culture. Upon his completion from service, they relocated to Decatur, Georgia and built a beautiful life together.
Soon after moving to metropolitan Atlanta, Margie began a thirty year career at the Atlanta Journal Constitution where she worked and ourished in the accounting department. Margie embraced downtown life, often taking Marta to work and walking the downtown streets of Atlanta. She met several people at the AJC and formed beautiful friendships- friendships that lasted beyond her retirement in 2006. They worked together, ate lunch together, and even formed a prayer circle together to encourage one another during life’s greatest challenges. Margie was a great asset to any team and never brought dissension. She worked hard and was blessed to enjoy the fruits of her labor.
“Her children rise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.”
Margie was baptized early in life at New Bethlehem Baptist Church in Carlton, Georgia under the late Reverend L.A. Jackson. She later became a dedicated member of the Memorial Church of God in Christ under Elder Jim Mattox in Conley, Georgia. She loved singing in the choir, attending Sunday School and fellowshipping with the ladies of her church. Margie was faithful in her church attendance, but she was also faithful to God’s Word. She could always be found helping someone and doing her best to serve in the church and outside of the church. Later in life, she joined her husband in membership at Greater Fellowship Baptist Church under Reverend Johnny Beasley where she continued her legacy of service. She became a Deaconess and worshipped alongside her husband who is a committed Deacon. Margie loved her church hats and she loved Sunday mornings. On any given Sunday morning, you could nd her in church in one of her favorite church hats, giving God praise.
Margie was a devoted wife and mother. She was a Proverbs 31 woman and took great pride in her husband and children. Her husband gave her owers on occasion and without occasion, often reminding her of his great love for her. She honored him and the commitment they made to each other and ensured her husband and sons were cared for and loved. Margie also took great joy in spending time with her granddaughter, Zakeriya, whether it was
attending a school program, playing “dress up” or simply sharing wisdom. Margie found immense pleasure and solace in being a grandmother. She also enjoyed tending to her plants, playing cards, bowling and shopping. Margie loved to go “thrifting” with her friends, often crossing state lines looking for the best nds. Sunny days meant her, along with Mary Ford, Betty Strickland and Lorraine Fleming, would be traversing the city and state with bags in tow, enjoying the best of life and making the best memories. Margie had a keen eye and had several collections over the years. She could always nd beauty in everything and everyone. While she embraced the city life, Margie never forgot “home” and visited frequently, whether it was to attend the annual Homecoming celebration at church, to get her hair done at her sister’s salon or simply to have dinner with her family. Margie’s home had a solidi ed place in her heart.
“Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: But a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.”
She will be remembered in the hearts of all those who loved and honored her. Margie was called into eternal rest on April 14, 2024.
