Welcome! Welcome to the August/September issue of ‘What’s On in Fenland’. As usual, you’ll find listings of both months’ events and activities. There’s plenty going on so there’s bound to be something to everyone’s taste. In the centre pages we highlight four of the main events this summer: the Bring and Share Cultural Festival in Wisbech, the Greener Living Fair in March, the Whittlesey Festival and the district wide, and indeed nationwide, Heritage Open Days Weekend. Towards the back of the magazine our Clubs and Groups section has expanded. To make it clearer it is now split into the market towns of Chatteris, March, Whittlesey and Wisbech, with a fifth section for the Villages. Our front cover, and the photo to the right, show the Fenland Arts Youth Theatre in their recent production of Bugsy Malone. The venue was Dunhams Wood near March and, despite the searing heat, the company entertained their audiences with song and dance numbers, comedy and, of course, the obligatory custard pie fight at the end! Dunhams Wood was a fantastic outdoor venue, which you can visit yourself this summer - see the listings pages for opening days. The Youth Theatre is taking a well-deserved break for summer but resumes again in September, offering classes for young people

Fenland Arts An Accessible Recording Studio Serving Fenland Grange Farm Studio is a state of the art recording and production facility located in the beautiful Fens. Attracting National bands, local artists, and those in education and just out to have fun with music; 100% of clients who complete the feedback questionnaire agree they would recommend the studio to their friends and that the studio represents value for money. ‘Bring and Share’ Festival, Wisbech, Sunday 1st August Organised by Wisbech Youth Council, this music, food and dance festival brings fun and games to the town. To be opened at 12.00 noon by local band The Brink, the free event continues with Chatteris (Brass) Town Band, African Heritage music and dance, Bollywood, Polish Dancers, the DUDI crew (young musicians from Fenland Arts Association) and more, finishing with the Leon Band at 7.00pm. The Rosmini Centre will provide food from a dozen cultures and Grays Amusements are providing a fairground with lots of rides for all the family. Fenland Arts will run a global citizenship workshop throughout the afternoon, supported by Young Lives who will be filming some of the festival, and there will be an Art Exhibition arranged by FenVAC (Fenland Visual Artists), whose Chairman Rob Morris is the festival’s official photographer. Also look out for the marquee dedicated to providing information about a wide range of services to the people of Wisbech and district. Greener Living Fair, March, Sunday 21st August If you’re looking for a free, fun-packed afternoon for all the family to enjoy, why not come down to Fenland’s third annual Greener Living Fair? It’s taking place on Saturday 21st August 2010 from 12 noon until 5pm at West End Park, March. The Fair is a great opportunity for you to see how easy it can be to lead a greener lifestyle, while having fun at the same time. There will be loads of free activities for everyone to enjoy. Why not try your hand at circus skills, rock climbing, or building and learning how to play your own musical instrument from junk? Or what about making a ‘bug hotel’ or designing clothes and other items from other people’s rubbish? There will also be a variety of stalls promoting and selling green products, from organic fruit and veg boxes, Fairtrade products, water and energy saving advice and products, smarter driving techniques and recycling and composting advice. The list goes on….. For those of you who are feeling extra green, why not cycle to the park and take advantage of the free bike health checks from the Bike Doctor? And if none of the above whets your appetite, you could always just come along to the park and sit and listen to the steel pan band or watch the birds of prey demonstrations. Fenland Heritage Weekend, 9th-12th September This September, properties across Fenland will throw open their doors for free as part of England’s annual celebration of local architecture, history and culture, taking place on September 9th – 12th. Supported nationally by English Heritage and run locally by an army of volunteers and community champions, Heritage Open Days takes place on people doorstops and is the country’s leading grassroots cultural event, offering people the chance to visit those historic, cultural and architectural gems not normally open to the public or which usually charge an admission fee. Wisbech has been part of this event for several years and this September it will be joined by March, Whittlesey and Chatteris to ensure the whole of the district is taking part. Visitors will be able to enjoy local architecture and culture with free access to properties that are normally closed to the public or which charge an entrance fee. Local attractions will include the Angles Theatre, the Fenland and West Norfolk Aviation Museum, Wisbech Grammar School, Octavia Hill Birthplace House, Whittlesey Museum and Chatteris Museum. More properties will be confirmed closer to the time and a special booklet detailing all the weekend’s events will be available in August. Whittlesey Festival 12th September A fantastic day out for families and individuals alike. We kick off at 10.00am with the Peterborough Highland Band marching through the streets to the Buttercross. During the day there will be a surprise performance from another famous marching Band. Some of the attractions for the children include a climbing wall (there’s also one for adults too), a bouncy castle, face painting, puppets, pony rides and some traditional “ Victorian Swing Boats” to bring a real touch of nostalgia. There will also be a children’s Fancy Dress competition and a Beautiful Baby competition with opportunities to win great prizes. There are plenty of activities for the adults too, including a vast array of stalls selling crafts and food items that are guaranteed to please as well as a Tug of War competition and a large classic car display. Local schools will be presenting different activities and there will be dancing near the Buttercross performed by the Whittlesey Christian Church Dance Group. As part of the Festival we will also be hosting the Schools Art Competition which last year attracted over 100 entries. This year promises to attract even more entries, as the schools are already busy preparing their entries. There are prizes and trophies for the winning entries to be awarded by the Major of Whittlesey. All the entries will be on display at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street on Festival Day. For the past sixty four years the Society has been presenting concerts in Wisbech. These have mainly been by small groups and soloists of the highest quality and the Society sets out to attract audiences by offering a wide range of music. The last two seasons have included a programme of film music, a concert by a soloist from Welsh National Opera as well as the Hereward Ensemble string quartet and a piano recital by award winning Robert Scarmadella. There usually three or four concerts each season and they are held in various locations in the town. They offer a chance for music lovers to hear live music without having to travel far to do so and we hope that even more people will come to our sixty-fifth season so that music can be kept alive in Wisbech and the Fens.
