CHATTERIS TOWN COUNCIL

Welcome! As Mayor of Chatteris I would like to invite you to read this souvenir programme for Chatteris Historic Festival 2010. Inside you will find a guide to the many activities planned for this year’s three-day show which will run from Friday 25th June to Sunday 27th June at Furrowfields Recreation Ground. An action-packed weekend is promised which the organisers hope will appeal to all ages. The entry fee is just 50p per person and this will help to sustain the festival for future years. The Festival is once again a shining example of partnership working between the two main funders, Fenland District Council and Chatteris Town Council, and hard-working volunteers from the local community. Please take a moment to read this guide, which includes information on several of the groups who will be re-enacting scenes from years gone by, and then go along and join in the fun. Finally I must thank all the local businesses who generously agreed to purchase advertising space, making the production of this programme possible. Cllr Peter Murphy

Living History The Kinights of Skirbeck The Knights of Skirbeck, portray a small military household during the early 15th Century. Our living history encampment includes food & cookery displays, hands on demonstrations of weapons & armour, flour making, toys & games, crafts, a jester, story tellers, and a wise woman. Naturally there are also combat demonstrations. http://community.lincolnshire.gov.uk/TheKnightsofSkirbeck

The Swords of Chivalry From the first moment visitors set eyes on their tented arena ringed with heraldic shields and flags, the Knights, Squires and Ladies of the Swords of Chivalry dedicate the day to bringing alive all the pageantry, sights and sounds of circa 14th Century England. With authentic fighting skills honed by hours of practice, coupled with more than a dash of courage, and leavened with humour, the Swords of Chivalry recreate the magic and excitement of a Medieval Tourney. www.swordsofchivalry.co.uk

The Clanwulfhar Vikings An authentic re-enactment of the Viking way of life through demonstrations of Viking combat, and an ever increasing “living history display, which includes a variety of Dark Age tents, a cooking area, and an armoury. All members of the group are trained in the skills and techniques required for day to day Viking life. New members welcome. www.peterborough-vikings.co.uk

Medieval Meal & Merriment

If you enjoy an evening’s entertainment with a difference why not book tickets for the Historic Festival Medieval Meal & Merriment. The marquee on Furrowfields will become a Medieval banqueting hall on Friday 25th June and as the diners tuck into a four course meal, which includes a hog roast, Vikings and Medieval re-enactors will take you back in time to the days of knights and peasants. Last year’s entertainment included a sheep trial and blindfold archery! It is hoped most of the diners will be in Medieval costume, but this is not a necessity, just a willingness to join in the fun. For tickets, costing £23 each, contact Joanna Melton on 01354 695166 or chatteriscouncil@btconnect.com.

Cream Tea Afternoon Sunday 27th, 1.00 - 4.00pm Menu Scone, butter, jam & cream £3.00 Strawberries & cream £3.00 A variety of other cakes £2.00 All served with a free cup of tea or coffee

Friday 25th June 9.00am - 3.15pm SCHOOLS’ LIVING HISTORY DAY This will launch this year’s Chatteris Historic Festival. An action-packed day is planned with talks and demonstrations from the Victorian, Roman, Tudor and Medieval eras. This year the day will have a slightly different format because we have been busy trying to book more hands on demonstrations. Each session will run for about 40 minutes and every group will be able to see four demonstrations/talks. Children will be in groups of about 20. The aim is to ensure that each group has at least one hands-on session and the session will be suitable for the ages of the children in the group. Among the activities on offer will be candle making by Candles for All Ages, braiding and weaving by Lucy the Tudor, Roman mosaic by Roman Mosaic Workshops, a cookery demonstration and tasting with Tina Spicer and music from Maggie Sand and Sandragon. There will also be talks on falconry by JTF Falconry, apothecary from Pete the Pong of Pans Pantry and Medieval weapons courtesy of Swords of Chivalry. At lunchtime there will be a combat display.

Historic Parade Saturday 26th This year’s Festival Parade looks like being bigger and better than ever. The walking parade will leave the Church Lane car park at 12noon on Saturday 26th June and make its way through the centre of the town to the Furrowfields recreation ground event site where prizes will be awarded for the best dressed group and individual entries. Among those who have already agreed to take part are the Peterborough Highland Band, the Victorian Strollers, the Mayor and the new Town Crier, a vintage fire engine, Emmarella Cheerleaders, LL Dance, the WI, re-enactors and brownies and guides. If you would also like to take part please contact Joanna Melton on 695166 or at chatteriscouncil@btconnect.com. (Details are needed for insurance purposes). All those taking part will enjoy free entry to the Festival on the day. If you do not wish to take part in the parade please come along, line the streets and cheer on the participants.

Living History Pan’s Pantry During the medieval period illnesses were treated in various ways - mainly based on who you were and what you could afford. Most people would have been treated with plants by the local wise woman unless you could afford a doctor. Medicines were prepared byt the Apothecary and included ingredients like Dragon’s Blood, myrrh, and rare, foreign plants.

The Unfound Door Tina and Richard Spicer are The Unfound Door.
