Welcome!
The organisers of this year’s Chatteris Historic Festival invite you to browse through this souvenir programme which will give you a guide to the action packed Festival planned. This year’s Festival will run for almost a week from Tuesday 21st June to Sunday 26th June and is a fine example of partnership working between the two main funders Fenland District Council and Chatteris Town Council and hard-working volunteers from the local community. Furrowfields Recreation Ground will be the venue for most of the events including the weekend shows which will cost just 50p per person each day. This fee, it is hoped, will help to sustain the festival in future years. Over the weekend not only will there be re-enactments from many different eras including Vikings, Napoleonic, Victorian and World War 2, there will also be dance and musical performances from local groups, dog and craft shows, a funfair and plenty of opportunities to browse among stalls. Watch out for the flypast of a World War II Spitfire and test your balancing skills on the Rodeo Bull. A big thank you to all the local businesses who kindly agreed to purchase advertising space and helped to make this programme possible. Please come along support the parade and then enjoy all the activities on offer.

The Entertainers The Clan Wulfhar Vikings An authentic re-enactment of the Viking way of life through demonstrations of Viking combat and an ever increasing “living history” display, which includes a variety of Dark Age tents, a cooking area and an armoury. All members of the group are trained in the skills and techniques required for day to day Viking life. New members welcome. www.peterborough-vikings.co.uk
Devilstick Peat ...the complete fool! When Peat first told his family and friends about his ambition to become a fool they were, understandably, concerned! However, undeterred by their reservations Peat persevered and has spent the last 17 years learning a multitude of talents which, mixed with his own zany brand of humour, has resulted in Devilstick Peat reaching near iconic status within the circus, entertainment, and re-enactment communities. Peat has worked in over 20 countries on 3 continents and has had the pleasure of performing at The British and European Juggling Conventions, Glastonbury Festival of Performing Arts, some of Europe’s largest medieval festivals, various castles and even conflict zones. www.devilstickpeat.co.uk
The Victorian Strollers We are a well established Network of friends of all ages from all over Southern England (and up to Hull in fact), with a similar interest, who specialise in portraying Victorian gentlefolk with a great range of award winning characters in authentic period costumes; Gentlemen, Ladies, Officers, Children and on occasion a few of the ‘lower classes’ as well. A fine group for adding that extra Victorian flavour to any event. Feel free to ask us questions, admire our outfits and have your photograph taken with us as we stroll around. www.victorianstrollers.co.uk

Children’s Entertainment Thursday 23rd June 4pm to 6pm Sponsored by Fenland Youth District Council. A new addition to this year’s Festival programme is an afternoon of entertainment aimed at children aged from about three to eight. The event is being organised in conjunction with Fenland Arts Association and for an entry fee of just £1 children will enjoy two shows and refreshments. There will be a circus skills workshop with the Phoenix Circus School. This is a new venture that has started up in the local area and, although new, their foundations are based in the Kent Circus School, a company Peat first worked for as a tutor over 18 years ago before working his way up to become its Chairman of the Board of Directors. Their aim is to bring joy, confidence and improved co-ordination to adults and children of all ages and abilities through the creative world of circus. Claire says “As a small family company we pride ourselves on being flexible enough to tailor our workshops to best suit your needs. Should you require us for an hour or a day, as a “one off” or weekly, to fulfil part of the school curriculum, as an exciting new after school club or for your child’s birthday party, we pride ourselves on creating workshops individually designed to meet your own requirements. Also, our CRB checks and membership to Equity (the professional performers’ union) guarantee you the same high level of safety and professionalism that we would expect as parents”
Local entertainer Stripey Wipey will also be performing a show which will include comedy, magic, balloon games and competitions: there should be something for everyone. All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

The Entertainers The Dragons of Wye-ten We are a family run puppet theatre specialising in medieval puppetry with jousting knights, princesses to be rescued and our speciality, sword-fighting dragons. Our puppetry retells some of the oldest tales ever told, along with new stories from our writing team. Dragon Hood and the Golden Arrow - Maid Marion is in trouble, the Sherriff of Nottingham is after her, but why? Dragon Hood to the rescue - On our stage Dragon Quest - The King says the Princess should be married so sends out a decree to find a suitable suitor, the first to bring back the head of a Dragon will win the hand of the Princess in marriage. But the Princess has other ideas and no-one said that the head had to be severed from the Dragon! - On our stage Medieval Interactive Puppet Show, where the children are encouraged to become the puppeteers! This includes Yumi, our 12ft long dragon for 5 children at a time to puppeteer! - In front of our stage Walkabout. There will be two walkabouts, one with our baby dragon and one with our 5ft long dragon, both of which are much loved and appreciated by our audiences. www.dragonsofwye-ten.co.uk

The Entertainers 3eme D'Artillerie The 3eme Regiment D' Artillerie Ă Pied de la Ligne are an established group portraying a French artillery regiment during the Napoleonic wars. The unit has a replica 4lb cannon, and a cannon crew to protect the cannon on the battle field. The uniform is a campaign standard to portray how a cannon crew actually looked on the battlefield rather than the parade ground. We have developed our living history to enhance our contribution to an event during the day and this will allow us to attend events where Cannons are not invited. http://artillerie.angelfire.com
The Cambs and Beds Lindy Hop Experience Also known as the Jitterbug, Lindy is a lively dance that originated in America in the 1920s. It was THE dance to do to the swing bands of the 1930s and was brought to Blighty by the American GIs during World War II. It was the forerunner of jive. We started teaching in earnest in 1996. Our teaching emphasis is on technique and style but mainly on having fun!! Whether we are giving dance demonstrations at private parties or appearing in character in front of thousands of people we bring history to life! www.cambsbedslindy.co.uk/
The 95th Rifles Living History Society Our Society consists of people from all walks of life; male and female, young and old alike, coming together to share a passion for recreating a part of our military heritage. We enjoy and take pride in what we do, entertaining and enlightening members of the public to this period in history, through our shows and events. We are a family orientated unit with partners and children welcomed. www.1st95thrifles.com

Perhaps a picture of a relative in wartime uniform or maybe a reminiscence about evacuees living in the town. Bring contributions along on June 25th. The Archive is made up of historic images that have been kindly donated by Chatteris residents. It can be viewed on line at www.ccan.co.uk.
