March Summer Festival 2013 So, Festival Goers, once again the chilly breath of winter has finally decided to take his annual leave and we are bathing in the warmth of late spring’s sweet whispers. In other words the March Summer Festival is upon us. I do at least hope we are bathing in a little warmth over the weekend, after the longest winter on record, especially as I think that we have one of the strongest line ups ever for the Summer Festival. We have firstly some excellent young bands on Friday evening, selected this year by Young People March, and our thanks to them for the work they have put in. On Saturday we kick off as ever with the Parade (this year organised by Rob Skoulding and Graham Litchfield) with prizes for the best presentations. We then have Jason Wing, the Principal of Neale-Wade, to open the Festival along with the new Mayor, Andrew Pugh, and he will be followed by that perennial favourite, the fancy dress competition. After that come the highly popular dance acts, broken up by two of this year’s Search for a Star entrants, the talented young musicians Dan Austin and Misty Jones and a new group from Neale-Wade - Radiowave. Our bands this year are a fabulous and diverse bunch – Scooted ‘n’ Booted, The Band From County Hell, Soulweaver and UK Beachboys. On Sunday The Chatteris Town Band will be followed by Ivan Garford, a number of local folk artists, MADAOS and The Rainmen and, back by popular demand, the Alan Norris Big Band. (If it rains as hard as it did two years ago this will be in St Peters across the road.) I think you’ll agree it’s quite a line up and holding it all together once more will be that human dynamo, who brings a smile to everyone’s face, John Whitehead. There’ll be plenty to do in the park as well with the gala, car boot, colouring competition, story-telling, fairground rides and food for all tastes. Thanks once again to all the volunteers who work so hard to put the Festival on, thanks also to our advertisers, supporters, sponsors, police and of course you the audience. And so may the sun shine again and give us all something to cheer. On behalf of all the Committee, I am delighted to welcome you to the 2013 Festival. Have a great weekend. Marcus Phillips (Chairman March Summer Festival) 3

Your MC for the weekend will be John Whitehead

Friday Night 7th June – Rock in the Park A lively mix of music to appeal to younger audiences, the evening has been co-ordinated by Ellie Fleming and Young People March (YPM). The performers - The Projectionist; Death Radio; Damaged and Circle of Reason (all local bands) and Her Dying Regret (from Reading), were chosen by a panel of members of YPM and a number of them are likely to have a presence on Facebook, Myspace or YouTube.

Saturday 8th June - March Lions Gala This charity fund-raising event, with a variety of stalls, provided by numerous local organisations and traders was an annual fixture in the town calendar for a number of years before the idea of the March Summer Festival was conceived. Organised and run by the Lions Club of March, the day starts as the stalls open just after 8.00am and is officially opened (along with the Festival itself) at 13.45 by the Mayor of March, Cllr Andrew Pugh, and Jason Wing, the Principal of Neale-Wade Academy, accompanied by the Carnival Princess and her attendant. The stalls will then continue until late afternoon providing plenty to see, do, buy and talk about for visitors to the park. 4

The March Carnival Parade The ever popular Festival Parade (Organised this year by Rob Skoulding and Graham Litchfield) will be led by the Gala Princess and her attendant (sponsored by March Lions and the Fenland Citizen) and the Mayor of March Cllr Andrew Pugh. At the time of writing, this parade, on the theme of ‘Best of British’ is set to include ‘Vivien’ the vintage fire engine sponsored by Patsy Brewin, The Soham Majorettes, a Samba Band, Dance Mania, Sarah’s Street Dancers, Young People March and a number of other local groups. The Parade will leave City Road Car Park at 12.30 to take their usual route along the High Street, Broad Street, Darthill Road, Norwood Avenue and then back to Broad Street and City Road via Station Road. The Skoulding Trophy for Best Group and the Mallett Trophy for Best Individual will be awarded after the opening of the event at 13.45 on the stage in West End Park. Judges this year are Jason Wing and Cllr Jan French. After the parade, some of the vehicles taking part will be parked up in ‘Brewin Oaks’ for the afternoon to give members of the public an opportunity to take a close up look at many of the exhibits and have a chat with the owners.

Fancy Dress Competition Entrants (both adult and children) are encouraged to wear costumes reflecting the theme of ‘Best of British’ but this is not obligatory. Participants will need to be at the front of the stage in the park at 14.00. The judges this year are Nigel Coley (Chair of the Chamber of Commerce) and Patsy Brewin, who will award prizes, in three categories to the winners, on the festival stage. The children’s prizes have been donated by The Toy Box. 5

Lisa Dickinson, ‘Dance Mania’ The ever-popular Dance Mania has been a popular feature at the festival for the past ten years. The modern dance school, founded in 1996 by Lisa Dickinson, provides classes for all ages from toddlers to adults, in many types of dance, including jazz, tap and ballet. To find out more about the group visit the CEC Centre in Station Road.

Local Talent Successes Hot from the Search for A Star/Young Cambridgeshire’s Got Talent Competition we have Singer/ Guitarists, Dan Austin and Misty Jones. 15 year old Misty, who has been performing her own songs around the county, including at The Junction in Cambridge, has recently recorded an E.P. “Wings” which will be available to buy on the day. You can find out about Misty, who lives in March, on Facebook, YouTube, MySpace and ReverbNation. Misty will be followed by Radiowave, a three-piece group from Neale-Wade Academy, who recently came third in the school talent contest.

Sarah’s Street Style Dance This locally run street dance school is now going into its 5th successful year. With nearly 200 students and 13 classes a week, their performances at the festival will include dances from the Elite teams, the normal street dance class crews and their brand new advanced adult crew. For more information phone Sarah (07855 505495), or visit www.sarahsstreetstyledance.yolasite.com. The dancers will be wearing costumes sponsored by ‘Local Generation’ March, ‘Transforming food waste for good’ - with thanks. 6

Saturday 8th June - Pop in the Park Scooted ‘n’ Booted A Mod/Ska and Reggae Covers Band, this March based group was formed in 2012, and comprises skilled, dedicated and committed musicians who provide a large sound with great energy. They have gained a good reputation around East Anglia for playing classics from Madness, The Specials, Bad Manners, UB40, The Clash, The Who and more. Recently the band has supported Neville Staple from The Specials.

Soulweaver This Cambridgeshire based rock band have gained a good reputation for live gigs and also received regular airplay on many UK and USA based radio stations. With dynamics, quality and intensity, their performances contain the essence of classic British rock bands such as Led Zeppelin and Cream but with a contemporary edge. They have supported rock legends Wishbone Ash and headlined a night at Peterborough Beer Festival 2012.

The Band From County Hell A five-piece Celtic rock band, which was founded in 1995, BFCH have been described as one of the most exciting and original Celtic bands on today’s circuit. They have performed in France, Germany and Ireland, and in art centres, music venues, festivals and theatres around the UK and have even had their own show at The London Palladium. Their sixth, original album ‘Shifts & Changes’, has recently received a four-star review from ‘RocknReel’ Magazine.

The UK Beach Boys This group are described as the Number One Beach Boys tribute act, having performed throughout the UK and Europe at top venues, theatres and major festivals, since their formation in 2002. Friendly Fenland Folk Three regular folk clubs from the Honest John in Chatteris, The British Legion in March and George’s in March are getting together to present a taste of (not so traditionally folky) material that people like to play at the clubs. Our definition of “Folk Music” is anything that “folk” play mediaeval to the present day.

MADAOS MADAOS has just won three awards at the Eastern NODA awards for its production of Footloose last Easter. They were awarded best musical, best technical production and best overall production. Today we will be showcasing a selection of songs from musicals, films and popular music. MADAOS is always looking for new members, helpers and supporters. Everyone is always welcome. To find out more please contact Claire Lilley on 07976 739975.

The Rainmen This March band have been playing together for 6 years, and have over 160 years playing experience between them! They have a unique set up – with a rich blend of acoustic, electric, mandolin and bass guitars, with a little harmonica and plenty of drumming. They will invite you to sing along, tap your feet and dance to a mix of rock, country, Americana and British classics.

Festival Information TOILETS are just before City Road car-park and in the town centre. They will be used by large numbers of people during the weekend, and though they will be checked and cleaned regularly, please help others by leaving them as you found them. FIRST AID - Members of The British Red Cross will be present throughout the weekend. In the event of need for first aid, make your own way to the First Aid Point or contact a steward (in a yellow jacket) who will summon first-aid assistance. LOST CHILDREN – Please keep your child/ren with you. Lost children should be reported to the Police or steward team. Any young child found wandering will be taken to the Control/ Information Caravan. LOST PROPERTY - If you should lose or find any articles during the event, go to the Control / Information Caravan or see a steward. Property not returned during the weekend will be handed in at the Police Station on Monday morning. LITTER - it takes a lot of time to clear the site of all the litter left. Please take your litter home with you or put it in the bins around the site. GLASS – we discourage the use and sale of glass items on the site, but if you do have glass bottles please dispose of them carefully. Also be aware that whilst the park is kept tidy, small fragments of glass could still be hidden in the grass and avoid walking bare-foot. FIRES AND BARBEQUES – are not permitted on West End Park - They cause a nuisance to other park users. PARKING - There is no parking on West End Park, please use City Road and other town car parks. DEHYDRATION & DRINK - If the weather is hot, make sure you don’t become dehydrated. Drink plenty of water or soft drinks. A tap is available on site if you need to get water. Remember alcohol has a dehydrating affect and whilst drinking is allowed in the public space that is the park during the hours of the Festival, it is not at other times, or at any time in public around the town. Also IF YOU DRINK ALCOHOL, DON’T DRIVE home. There will be large police presence each evening. Take a taxi or walk home instead. DRUGS, HARD OR SOFT, are no more legal at the Festival than they are anywhere else - the same penalties and risks apply. LEAVING THE SITE – Music will finish by 10.00pm each evening. Please leave the park quickly and quietly (unless you are staying behind to help us clear up). Disclaimer Whilst every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of information the committee cannot guarantee that it will be free of errors or omissions. Similarly the programme times may be subject to alteration. Programme compiled by Maureen James & members of The March Summer Festival Committee. 21
