Pleased to support the Whittlesey Festival

. . . e m o c l e W I am delighted to be able to welcome you again to the Whittlesey Summer Festival. It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the Whittlesey Festival Committee, in this the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Year, on organising the Festival for the fifth year and thank our sponsors Fenland District Council. The event organisers including the Business Forum, Town Council and local community groups have once again excelled themselves in putting the event together. I know, more than ever this year, that with other Jubilee functions that have already taken place it is extremely hard work in getting volunteers to come forward. Once again a full day of events and attractions is planned and will I know provide an exciting and action packed day for the whole family; this year the Committee has also managed to keep the majority of children’s rides free, something they strive to do to make it a good family day out. The Committee organised a fantastic fund raising Festival Jubilee Ball at the end of May to ensure that some free rides continue for a few more years. Please support the cafes and public houses around the town; they will be open and serving refreshments throughout the day. I am sorry that Ken and I cannot be with you this year as we have a family commitment; however I will be thinking about you and hope that you have a very successful and enjoyable day. My Deputy, Councillor Martin Curtis, will be standing in for me and I know he will, as always, do a great job and will be presenting the prizes to the winners of the Art & Baby competitions. Do come along and enjoy yourselves, you will be sure of a very warm Whittlesey welcome. Kay Mayor, Mayor of Whittlesey & District

Classic Cars on Display People are attracted to classic vehicles for different reasons. At a show exhibitors take a pride in showing their vehicles and discussing the history. Some have inherited vehicles from family, others have bought a vehicle and spent hours renovating it or paid to have a renovation carried out. Sometimes vehicles are shown in the original state they were found in, this often includes some surface corrosion and faded paintwork - so long as they meet legal requirements they should be displayed as it can be interesting to see the starting point for a renovation. It is much better to have all levels of condition on display than to lock them away, hoping to start a renovation at some time in the future. The viewing public give away their age when looking at classic vehicles with comments such as “This was my first car”, “My grandparents (or parents) owned one of these” or “We didn’t have to wear seat belts in those days” .......... So be careful what you say! Some people are content to walk by the vehicles on display and take in the scene, others will spend hours looking at details and asking questions. There is usually something for everyone. Exhibitors will let you take photos, but if you wish to sit in a vehicle for this purpose always ask for the owner’s permission as not all will agree to this. Just remember, these are classic cars not collectors’ cars. A collectors’ car is one which you drive down the road and then go back and collect the pieces! John Sharpe, Festival Car Show Co-ordinator

u... o y k Than This fifth Whittlesey Festival has been organised by Fenland District Council together with local community groups. The Steering Group would like to thank businesses who contributed to the cost of the Programme, the Stallholders, and organisations taking part including Schools, Bands, Dancers, Musicians and many more. We sincerely thank all Whittlesey Residents and visitors for their support and attendance at the event and hope everyone enjoys the range of activities provided. Special thanks to our main sponsors, Fenland District Council, Whittlesey Town Council, together with McCain Foods, Jackson Buildbase and Parkers Newsagents for Programme distribution . A special thank you to Brian of Whittlesey Christian Church and his team for all the help given throughout the year and to the Business Forum for their continued support. Many thanks are also due to the Ladies of the Nova Club for their fundraising coffee morning and to all the people that supported the recent festival fundraising ball. Finally, thanks are due to the project group - Pauline Edge, Jenny Parker, Mike Chapman, Brian Smithyman, Averil Cosstick and all the local organisations involved that work so hard to make the Whittlesey Festival the best event in the region.
WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH AND THE FESTIVAL Whittlesey Christian Church is delighted to fully support the Whittlesey Festival, which promises to be the biggest and best yet. As a church we believe it is important to freely play an ever growing part in the life of this community. On festival Day we make our facilities available for ‘The Whittlesey Festival Schools Art Exhibition’ which seems to grow each year. Please encourage the children’s efforts by viewing some of the incredible work they are exhibiting at our church in Broad Street. Some of our friendly folk will be waiting to serve you with a free cup of tea/coffee. Soon after the Festival, work begins on a £180,000 refit of our existing facilities which will see the 2 downstairs rooms become one, enabling us to house our growing congregation and popular ‘Little Angels’ Moms & Tots groups and the 50+ ‘Pastime’: The addition of a second floor will give us much needed smaller rooms and a chapel area where people can drop in should they feel the need for a time of quiet reflection while they are in town. Make sure you visit our Marquee on the square where the children can have their face painted and a balloon ‘all for free’. While you’re there be sure to pick up more details about our church and its many activities. Our talented puppeteers and dancers will also be entertaining you at the times listed in your program Brian Smithyman (Pastor of Whittlesey Christian Church - 01733 752093) 18
