Whittlesey Festival 2013

Welcome It is with enormous pleasure that I welcome young and old alike to the sixth fantastic Whittlesey Festival. The event is sponsored by the Fenland District Council in conjunction with the Whittlesey Town Council, Whittlesey Business Forum and other Community Partners who together with the very hard working Whittlesey Festival Committee have ensured that this year’s festival will be equally successful as in previous years. A full day’s programme is planned with bands and dancers, numerous free rides for the children, competitions, stalls and much more to keep the whole family entertained. Our local businesses will be open throughout the day so there should be no lack of refreshments available and there is the opportunity also to seek out that elusive bargain. Please support our local traders as in these days of out of town shopping it is important that they are able to take maximum advantage of local events such as the Whittlesey Festival. I shall be on hand throughout the day together with my wife Ann, the Mayoress, so please come along and talk over your concerns with us. I am particularly looking forward to presenting prizes to the winners of the various competitions. Do come along and join in the celebration of all that is good in Whittlesey.

Whittlesey Festival 2013

A Brief History of Whittlesey There were many islands of gravel and clay projecting through the marshy, boggy landscape of the Fens and Whittlesey was one of these. The origin of the name is uncertain, but it is widely held that the island was inhabited by an Anglo-Saxon by the name of Whittel. The Anglo-Saxon for island was “ea” or “ey” hence Whittlesey. The Romans used the firm, high ground for their road, the Fen Causeway running East from Castor via Whittlesey, Eastrea, Coates and Eldernell. After the Norman conquest, the Doomsday Book was compiled and in it the town was recorded as “Witesie”. The present St Mary’s Church started to be built, under the auspices of the Abbott of Thorney, soon after the town was devastated by fire in 1244 and St Andrew’s Church, under the Prior of Ely, was commenced soon after. Additions to both churches continued until the 15th century. During the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell, Hugh Underwood, who is buried in St Mary’s Church, was deputy lieutenant of the Isle of Ely and Governor of Whittlesey. The Governors of the Town Revenues took over the running of the town and its inhabitants in the 17th century using donated charitable funds, which they continued to do until Improvement Commissioners were appointed in 1849. These Commissioners imposd rates upon property to fund their activities in cleansing, paving and gas lighting the town. The gas works, situated in Delph, came into being in 1834. The largest freshwater lake in Southern England, Whittlesey Mere, was drained in 1851, about the same time as the Girls’ School in West End and the Boys’ School in Station Road were built to educate the young folk of the town. The coming of the Eastern Counties Railway from Peterborough through to Ely in 1846 greatly enhanced the movement of goods and livestock to various parts of the country. Local Authority in the form of Urban and Rural District Councils took over the management of the town ad its environs in 1898. Having amalgamated, these were replaced by the present Fenland District Council. Geoff Oldfield

So Much to Enjoy at Whittlesey Museum! Whittlesey Museum will be open throughout the entire Whittlesey Festival. Your local museum will be showing a fascinating insight into Victorian Whittlesey with the new workhouse display, as well as running exciting children’s activities and a prize draw with dozens of prizes on offer. The museum tells the fascinating story of the town from prehistory through to the present day. This unique story is told through a rich and diverse collection which spans the centuries. From an ice age woolly mammoth tusk to the Mickey Mouse gas masks worn by Whittlesey’s children during WW2, there is something for everyone to enjoy at your local museum. Our friendly curator, Alex, will be at the museum all day on the Sunday so please stop by for a chat and share any ideas you may have for Whittlesey’s First World War centenary remembrance events. If you are unable to visit on the day, we are open every Friday and Sunday from 2.30pm to 4.30 and from 10 am to midday on Saturdays. The museum is located in the old Town Hall on Market Street. Whittlesey Christian Church Whittlesey Christian Church is delighted to fully support the Whittlesey Festival, which promises to be the biggest and best yet. As a church we believe it is important to freely play an ever growing part in the life of this community. On Festival Day we make our facilities available for ‘The Whittlesey Festival Schools Art Exhibition’ which seems to grow each year. Please encourage the children’s efforts by viewing some of the incredible work they are exhibiting at our church in Broad Street. Some of our friendly folk will be waiting to serve you with a free cup of tea/coffee. For those of you that saw the Schools Art Exhibition last year, we trust you will enjoy our new facility. While the downstairs is now complete, work still continues on fitting out the new second floor. As soon as this is completed we will be hosting a re-launch event and chance to view all our facilities along with plans for the new building at the rear. If you would like to be kept informed of this please leave us your email or address details on the forms near the serving hatches and we’ll make sure you are notified in good time. We are a lively Charismatic Church which is at the heart of the Spiritual and Practical life of our Community. If you are looking for a church where you can grow in your faith in an environment of care, love and support why not make plans to come along any Sunday morning @ 10.45 where we know you will be made to feel right at home. If you need someone to talk to our Pastor, Brian will be more than happy to help. Make sure you visit our Marquee on the square where the children can have their face painted and a balloon ‘all for free’. While you’re there be sure to pick up more details about our church and its many activities. Our talented puppeteers and dancers will also be entertaining you at the times listed in your programme. Punch & Judy and Magic Show

Peterborough Highland Band Returning again for this year is a uniformed marching band that has been promoting Scottish Highland music through public performances in and around the City of Peterborough for over 60 years, helping organisations like The Royal British Legion to raise much needed funds for their various charities.

CAN YOU HELP? Or to coin a well-used phrase ‘every little helps’ Those who have attended the Whittlesey Festival each year will be familiar with the commitment of its organisers to do everything in their power to keep it a Fun Filled Day that individuals and families can attend without it costing them the earth.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR

All children’s rides are either free or heavily subsidised to keep the cost down HELP! to approximately £1. The programme contains details of when and where each presentation can be found and once again we endeavour to keep this free. The feed-back we receive frequently speak of people’s surprise at how each year it seems to grow in variety. As you can imagine, the cost of providing all this is constantly escalating.

So How Can You Help? We are grateful for the funding that Fenland District Council & Whittlesey Town Council continue to provide despite their own funding from government being drastically cut each year. For the first time this year we are making a Funding Bucket available for any who wish to make a goodwill contribution; small or great, it all helps to achieve our target. This can be found on the Festival Table which is situated next to the Buttercross Monument. Brian Smithyman from the Festival Committee will be on hand between introducing each presentation to answer any questions you may have. Please enjoy the day and thank you in anticipation for your help. Whittlesey Festival 2013

Spitfire Flypast We are pleased to say that the Whittlesey Festival will be receiving a Spitfire Flypast during the day (subject to RAF service requirements) Developed from the Schneider seaplanes by the late R.J. Mitchell (and to the same specification as the Hurricane), it has kept in the very forefront of fighter progress. With Rolls Royce engines throughout its many modifications, it can safely claim to have the measure of anything the Luftwaffe can send against it. In the cloudy days of 1940, Spitfires and Hurricanes achieved results which are known throughout the world, and have been worthily eulogised by far more worthy than can be set down here. The Spitfires tackled the German fighters while the Hurricanes took care of the bombers. Now serving in all parts and under all conditions, the Spitfire will be found wherever there is trouble in the sky. A recent addition is the Seafire, adapted for the Fleet Air Arm and flown from aircraft carriers. Whittlesey Festival 2013
