Local Taekwon-do Talent at Bring & Share In the middle of some little and large Taekwon-do talent at the Wisbech Bring and Share Multi-cultural Festival in Wisbech Park is Cllr Vivien MacRae Mayor of Wisbech. There was a truly representative group of dedicated students from the Carter School of Taekwon-do ranging from a 6 year old to a 53 year old – men, women and children of a wide range of gradings and abilities and they put on a fantastic exhibition followed by workshops where people could have a go, including the Mayor who broke a board in style. Mr Anthony Carter and his students have supported the Wisbech Multi- cultural Festival for four years, by putting on an exceptional exhibition and then providing workshops for people of all ages to have a go. Many of those who have had a go have since joined one or more of the classes provided by the 5th Dan International Instructor and examiner at his lessons at the Hudson Leisure Centre on Monday, Wednesday or Friday every week between 6pm and 7pm. It’s worth noting that the first lesson is always free.
Amazing Bring & Share Multi-cultural Festival for the fourth year run, organised and funded by Wisbech Town Council in Wisbech Park was a great success with lots of exciting and interesting performances, exhibitions and stalls.

The Mayor at the Fair Twice a year the Fair comes to Wisbech. In the month of March we have the Mart Fair, and in September we are thrilled by the Statute Fair. They are brought to us by the Showman’s Guild of Great Britain, which is a very proud part of the traditions of this country and has been a big part of the heritage of Wisbech for centuries. As well as the two fairs, the Showman’s Guild help out at events such as the Rock Festivals, Multicultural Festivals held in the Summer in Wisbech each year, and also at the Christmas Light Switch on – and every time they do us proud.

Remembrance Sunday is Remembrance Day this year As the custodians of Remembrance, The Royal British Legion calls on the nation to unite in commemorating Remembrance Sunday. Pictured here are some of the dignitaries that were at Remembrance Sunday in previous times. This year Wisbech Town Council will be again represented as will many other organisations throughout the town and district - on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month to mark the signing of the Armistice, on 11th November 1918, to signal the end of World War One, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare. Remembrance Day is on 11 November. It is a special day set aside to remember all those men and women who were killed during the two World Wars and other conflicts. At one time the day was known as Armistice Day and was renamed Remembrance Day after the Second World War. Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday in November, which is usually the Sunday nearest to 11 November. This year this falls on Remembrance Day. Special services are held at war memorials and churches all over Britain. Ours will be at the memorial gardens at the mouth of the Crescent. Since this year is very special as they both fall on the same day, we will remember them - and we invite you to join us. 6
The Kenya Expedition On Wednesday 11 July, twenty two youngsters from Wisbech Grammar School set out on an expedition to Kenya. On Wednesday 8 August they returned having had the experience of a lifetime. Amongst them were Alice (daughter of former Mayor Nick Meekins), and Stuart (son of Town Clerk Erbie Murat). During their month they spent time at CAYA repairing fences around the conservation area within the protected wildlife sanctuary. They also went to DIAWNI BEACH where they were involved with marine wildlife conservation and did their PADI open water diving certificates. During their time at TSAVO they went on a photographic safari and helped with wildlife conservation. And at MUHAKIA they worked with the local community to prepare the foundations of a kitchen; dig a grey water well; and work with the children. Stuart writes, ‘Digging the grey water well was, for me, the most rewarding. With a great deal of hard work, application and team work, we were able to help George, one of the local men, to dig a well that would take all the water from the washing up, washing machines and showers (not sewage) - and filter it to produce water that could be used to irrigate and raise edible crops.’ Alice writes, ‘I certainly look at the world a little differently now; most notably, considering I saw many people living in dreadful poverty, I do not remember ever seeing one face that was not smiling. Perhaps the best experience I had was one afternoon teaching in an incredibly poor primary school; the children there worked from about 6am until 6pm, often going without food or water all day, as they came from large families with little or no income. I had a grade 7 English class of about 70 students, aged 13 – 20, all of whom were very eager to learn and, it transpired, were very enthusiastic singers!’ A heartfelt thank you goes from them and the other young people from Wisbech Grammar School to Miss Forbes and Mr Williams who went with them on the trip, and to all the help and support they received from family, friends and other fundraisers who helped them get there.

Warning over bike thefts POLICE are urging cyclists to take security precautions when leaving their bikes following a spate of thefts. Many of the bikes stolen were left unsecured outside shops or in gardens. Crime reduction officer Julie Hanrahan said: "It only takes a few minutes for a bike to be ridden away by a thief so my message would be, ‘If you value it, lock it, don’t lose it’. "More than half of all bicycle thefts take place at the owner’s property. Simple crime prevention methods can lessen the chance of having a bicycle stolen. "It may seem like there are lots of things to think about when locking a bike but once you get into the habit you will be able to lock your bike within seconds and it will be well worth the trouble.”
Cyclists are urged to: Ÿ Secure removable parts. Lock both wheels and the frame together. Take smaller parts and accessories that can be removed with tools with you. Ÿ Make the lock (and chain, if used) and bike harder to manoeuvre when parked – to stop thieves smashing the lock open. Ÿ Keep the lock (and/or chain) away from the ground. Ÿ Keep the gap between the bike and lock small. Ÿ Never leave the lock lying on the pavement – a lock can be sledge hammered easily when it is resting on the ground. Ÿ Locks can also be picked, so face the lock towards the ground (but not resting on it) so it can’t easily be turned upwards for picking. Ÿ Register you cycle for free at www.immobilise.com Ÿ Keep a detailed description of the cycle, make, model, frame number, colour and any distinctive markings. Ÿ Mark the bike using a clearly visible and secure marking in two separate places.
Anyone with information about bike theft should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111

Wisbech was victorious yet again in the 2012 Anglia in Bloom awards, this year taking its fifth Gold Award and winning again the Large Town category The Judges Report for Wisbech stated: Wisbech In Bloom continues to develop and definitely deserves its Gold Award. Faced with the loss of their plant raising facilities they managed to find another site complete with redundant polytunnel hoops. Similarly, faced with a hosepipe ban they persuaded owners of three very large roves to use their rainwater, this collected rainwater quickly filled their bowser to water over 300 baskets and planters throughout the town. Wisbech is very fortunate in having two historic gardens in Peckover House and Elgood’s Brewery. A new feature this year is a ‘gerainbow’ in St Peter’s Churchyard.
Bob Massingham and Ray Wicks of Wisbech in Bloom received the award from Cllr Mrs Boddington, Chairman of Huntingdonshire District Council. Picture courtesy of Anglia in Bloom.
Areas of achievement listed by the judges were: Ÿ The two new poly-tunnel plant raising facilities at Smith’s farm Shop Ÿ The collection of rainwater at Smith’s Farm Shop, Elgood’s Brewery and Technical Electrical Services and the twelve, donated, 1000 litre containers to do this Ÿ Wisbech Park – a wonderful open space with some beautiful sculptures and flower beds Ÿ The conservation work in Wisbech General Cemetery Ÿ The Boathouse and newly landscaped Nene Waterfront Ÿ The school gardening group and the ‘Our Place’ garden at St Peter’s Primary School Ÿ Rabbit (Freedom Bridge) Roundabout with its three boats and the sustainable planting in the raised beds at the entrance to Freedom Bridge Ÿ Peckover House and Elgood’s Brewery historic gardens Ÿ The wonderful floral displays in St Peter’s Church gardens, Crescent Gardens, and the new Museum garden Ÿ The 350, sponsored hanging basket provided by Wisbech In Bloom Ÿ The mock shop fronts in the High Street Ÿ The garden created at the Octavia View homeless hostel They also noted the plans for the future for the Octavia Hill Birthplace House Centenary Green, continuing conservation work in the General Cemetery, and the ongoing replacement of the shrubs in St Peter’s Car Park.
To all members of Wisbech In Bloom and the volunteers who give so much of their time and resources we all say
Thank You and Congratulations! 17

Roddons Housing Association Big Lottery Grant Roddons Housing Association is receiving £999,817 to help first time tenants and those moving in and out of work in Fenland, Cambridgeshire. The project will work with 2,500 beneficiaries. All new housing tenants will receive a mandatory welcome meeting covering budgeting and benefits advice. Tenants will be encouraged to attend workshops on eating cheaply, choosing the right energy tariff and raising the awareness of loan sharks. An ICT training and laptop loan service will give people six hours of one to one tuition focusing on IT skills and personal finance. Sara Betsworth, Big Lottery Fund Head of East of England region, said: “We wanted to prevent debt from starting or getting worse for people on very low income. When you have very little and you don’t have the confidence to work through the maze of modern money management, it can be tough getting the right support. “BIG’s funding will ensure that social housing providers, advice providers and local authorities in our area can work together to improve the financial confidence of people most in need.”
