Recreational and Social Opportunities for Individuals with Disabilities

Adapted Recreation programs are designed to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities from 12 months to over 60 years of age. Adapted Recreation staff is composed of certified special education teachers, certified paraprofessionals, and volunteers, who are on hand for most programs to assist and encourage the individuals as needed. Any individuals requiring assistance with matters not directly related to the activities and needing assistance with toileting and feeding must bring a chaperone/aide. Crafts and Fine Arts

Art with Ashley (14 Yrs & Up)

Join Ashley as she shares how to do a variety of unique art projects. Projects will range from drawing to painting, and three-dimensional pieces of work. Facemasks are recommended.

Day Camps

Outdoor Nature Camp (16-23 Yrs)-NEW

This camp will emphasize experiential learning. Campers will spend time outside, having fun observing nature up close using items like binoculars and magnifying lenses. Science will be introduced in a fun environment, with crafts, games, and hands-on activities. Facemasks are recommended.

Friendship Camp (11-15 Yrs)

Keep your child engaged this summer by signing up for Friendship Camp! This camp offers campers a variety of activities that enhance social skills, as well as vital life skills for individuals with a disability. Through our arts and crafts program, swimming and exercise activities, your child’s overall well-being will be enhanced. Come meet new friends and visit with old ones, and see how much fun Friendship Camp is. Campers must be able to follow directions and adhere to all rules. Camp is held at Liberty Recreation Center, 2601 Glencliff Drive. Facemasks are recommended.

Kids Activities

Adapted Gymnastics Boys (3-7 Yrs)

Students with special needs will feel a real sense of accomplishment and independence as they learn how to roll, hang, swing, and go upside down all by themselves. Students will be taught basic skills on the pommel horse, high bar, parallel bars, floor vault and other activities. Each child will progress at a rate which they are most comfortable. Facemasks are recommended.

In this beginning gymnastics class for children with special needs, they will learn very basic skills on the vault, bars, beam, floor and trampoline, as well as other activities. They won’t know it, but they will also be improving their gross motor skills, hand eye coordination, body awareness and building self-esteem. Each child will progress at a rate which they are most comfortable. Facemasks are recommended.

This class is for athletes ages who are successful at basic tumbling and gymnastics skills. Please speak to instructor for approval before registering. Gymnastics provides a multitude of benefits for children with special needs, as it challenges the brain to work in connection with the body as the child becomes physically stronger. Some of the skills this class will focus on include cartwheels, round-offs, front and back walkovers, chin up pull overs, back hip circles, and more. All of these activities aim to help improve the student’s motor skills and confidence as well as their ability to follow directions. Facemasks are recommended.

Social Skills Gymnastics (8 Yrs & Up)

What a great way to improve social skills for individuals with special needs... by participating in a challenging, yet fun, adapted gymnastics class with your peers! Improving the ability to appropriately socialize with your peers will be the emphasis of this class, as students are introduced to beginning skills on the gymnastics equipment. Facemasks are recommended.

Online Activities

Virtual Dance Club (15 Yrs & Up)

We are back! Want to be a part of our new Dance Club? Come join us as we dance to great music played by our own, Tim the DJ, virtually in your own home. It will be a great evening seeing and having fun with old and new friends. The dance will be offered via Skype. Meeting instructions will be emailed a few days before the class start date.

This class will teach practical life skills like counting money, time management, and household chores, all while enhancing conversational skills and social skills involved in these activities. This will be done through social scenarios and practice situations in a fun, playful way. Join us in learning new skills and improving the skills you already have. Items from the home, i.e. broom, laundry, etc. will be needed for class. This class will be offered via Zoom. Meeting instructions and needed class supplies will be emailed a few days before the start of the class.

Specialized Aquatics

FlowRider (Beg/Int)

Learn to ride the big waves on the FlowRider at Jack Carter Pool. This class is geared towards individuals with special needs. Staff can accommodate for participants using a modified board as well as guided instruction making it possible for anyone to ride the wave. All ability levels are welcome to participate. For safety purposes, the minimum class requirements are: all participants are at least 42 inches in height to ride the bodyboard; all participants are at least 48 inches in height to standup ride; all participants wanting to standup ride must sign the FlowRider release of liability waiver. The waiver can be obtained online. If you are under the age of 18, a parent/guardian must sign the waiver.
