From the Head’s Desk Earlier this fall, I had the pleasure of speaking to the parents who attended the Park Tudor Parents Association (PTPA) annual meeting. I was able to share the State of the School (in brief – it’s good!) as well as give some updates on some exciting things that are happening at Park Tudor.

Following are some highlights:

• In September, we submitted our ISACS Reaction Report, which is a response to the ISACS Accreditation Report we received in the spring. The Reaction Report required us to report any significant changes at the school since the Accreditation Report was written, to respond to all of the ISACS Visiting Team’s major recommendations, to provide a plan for implementing the major recommendations, and to explain how the major recommendations align with our existing Strategic Plan. It also required us to review all of reports from the ISACS Sub-Committees, and either accept the recommendations from the ISACS Visiting Team in each of these areas, or provide a rationale for any recommendations we rejected.

• I reported that we opened school with an enrollment of nearly 900 students, which is a significant increase over last year.

Our applications for this school year also increased by close to 50. We have shifted from thinking about “Admissions” to focusing on “Enrollment Management,” which includes a major focus on preventing attrition. I am pleased to report that we have greatly reduced our attrition from a high of about 11% to about 6% this year.

• We have launched a new marketing campaign, with messaging driven by market research. Our research found that parents who are likely to choose Park Tudor are motivated by long-term life success for their children – “prepare my child for success in college and beyond.” They seek a school

with a rigorous focus on academics that develops problemsolving and critical thinking skills. Our ad campaign, which you will likely see on social media, focuses on how Park Tudor prepares students for what’s next – in school, in college, and in life.

• Our market research, which included a survey of Park Tudor parents, also revealed that we have a very healthy Net Promoter Score (NPS). Many companies regularly measure their NPS to determine whether their fans, or “promoters,” outweigh their detractors. The score can range anywhere from -100 to +100; anything over 0 is considered good. Park Tudor’s NPS was a 68; by comparison, Apple’s NPS is 72 and Trader Joe’s is 62. Among the competitor schools we looked at in our research, Park Tudor’s NPS is highest.

• Academically, our focus is to maintain our high level of excellence, building on our program where possible. We are continuing to use mind, brain, education research to enhance teaching and learning, and are also working to address emotional and social growth in response to the increasing levels of anxiety and stress in adolescents. We are strengthening our equity and inclusion efforts, and are currently searching for a new Director of Equity & Inclusion.

We are looking at our extracurricular activities to provide a robust offering for all of our students, and we are taking advantage of our new late-start schedule on Wednesdays to strengthen our professional development with meetings

before school for faculty devoted to teaching and learning.

In addition, we are enhancing our student support services, updating our technology, and working hard to improve communication between faculty and parents across the board.

• From a facilities standpoint, we were able to address several much-needed projects during the summer. In the Upper School, we’ve enhanced the space with paint, lighting, new carpeting and furniture, window blinds, and improved classroom technology. Ayres Auditorium has been refreshed with new seats, improved ADA seating, carpet, paint, handrails, acoustical panels, stage floor and pit cover.

Our Admissions and Business Offices received a fresh new design, and we’ve created a dedicated space for our Robotics program. Finally, outside we completed work on our concrete and landscape. These renovations were paid for by a one-time grant from the Park Tudor Trust, as well as donated funds earmarked for this purpose.

• In order to execute our Campus Master Plan, we are embarking on a Capital Campaign. We are still in the “silent phase” of the Campaign, with a feasibility study underway along with meetings with potential major donors. We are encouraged that our pledges to date combined with discussions with other donors will allow us to meet our end of year goal, which is 75% of the cost of the Center for Health, Sport & Recreation. If all goes as planned, we will launch the Capital Campaign publicly for the 2020-21 school year, which would dovetail nicely with the 50th anniversary of the creation of Park Tudor through the merger of Park School and Tudor Hall.​Please contact Director of Development, Kelly Lamm Teller ’87 at 317-415-2899 to learn more.

It has been a busy and successful fall at Park Tudor. I have been struck so far this year by the positive energy on campus. School spirit is high among our students, parents, and faculty, and I am looking forward to building on this momentum throughout the year. As always, I welcome your thoughts and feedback.

• Work on our Campus Master Plan is continuing in earnest.

As you recall, in May our Campus Master Plan was approved by the Board of Directors. The plan will be implemented in phases, with the initial phase focused on a new Center for Health, Sport & Recreation as well as a new Lower School (JK-4th). Designs for the Center are moving forward, with the goal of breaking ground in May, 2020.

IN MEMORIAM

Former Headmaster George Young Former Park Tudor Headmaster, William George Young, passed away on October 31, 2019 at age 83. He joined Park Tudor as Headmaster in the fall of 1972 from Greenhill School in Dallas.

At only 36 years old, he was one of the youngest Headmasters in the history of Park Tudor and its predecessor schools. He served as Headmaster until 1986.

A native of Stambaugh in the iron mining region of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, George had studied at Pennsylvania State University, Northwestern University and Northern Michigan University, earning a master’s degree in history and political science at Northern Michigan. He met his late wife, Joan, at Northern Michigan.

George had spent 11 years at Greenhill School, where he taught mathematics and history and served as a coach of several sports teams. He had served as Greenhill’s director of the Middle School and director of the Upper School, which was the position he held when Park Tudor hired him as Headmaster.

During George’s time as Headmaster, Park Tudor grew its enrollment, endowment and physical presence. Retired faculty member Debbie Stuart Everett ’69 remembers, “In 1979, George came to an alumni board meeting to plug a new position he was creating to expand the admissions office staff and, therefore, enrollment. As a result, he hired me for that position. Within two or three years his strategy paid off as we enrolled 700 students, the largest enrollment since the merger.”

When George first came on board at Park Tudor, the campus needed physical improvements and building the endowment was crucial to this endeavor. Art classes were still being held in a small wooden frame building inherited from Lilly Orchard, and theatre productions were performed “in the round” in the Apple Barn, the former site of cider and apple sales.

In 1974, George helped launch Park Tudor’s first development capital campaign to address long-term facility needs, with a goal of raising $2.25 million to construct classrooms and an auditorium, to increase the endowment and to improve athletic facilities.

Thanks in part to lead gifts from the Ayres family and the Krannert Charitable Trust, the campaign easily met its goal of raising $2.25 million by June 1975. Groundbreaking for the Ayres Auditorium and adjacent Fine Arts building also took place that summer, and the building was dedicated in November 1976.

Said Park Tudor’s Director of Fine Arts Emeritus, John Williams, “During my early years I could go to George with new ideas for growing the Fine Arts programming and always found him willing to listen and discuss. When I insisted a room in the new Multi-Purpose Building/Fine Arts Building be designated for instrumental music, he responded thoughtfully, ‘But we don’t have a band!’ I remember assuring him by saying, ‘We will.’

Determining the size of the auditorium was another important PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL 2019

decision. In 1974, the size of the Upper School was about half of what it is today. We were building for the future, and decided on a seating number that was nearly double the size of the Upper School at that time. George acknowledged great teaching and celebrated it. His open mindedness and shared vision allowed the Arts to flourish during those important and crucial years he served the school as Headmaster.”

George continued to spearhead fundraising efforts for the school, building the endowment through the 1970s and into the 1980s. Under Young’s leadership, Park Tudor added a kindergarten in 1978 and enrollment continued to grow, particularly in the Lower School. Due to the growing endowment, the school was able to offer increasing amounts of financial aid. After a 14-year tenure, George Young resigned at the end of the 1985-1986 school year.

In addition to his contributions to Park Tudor, George was devoted to his family—his late wife, Joan, and his daughter, Cara Young Barretto ’93. Recalls Debbie Everett, “Where relationship building was concerned, it was always George and Joan. Together they brought a sense of family to the staff and faculty as well as to the students and alumni. The birth of their daughter Cara was celebrated campus wide as a pink flag was raised on the flagpole. I loved the faculty gatherings at their home or in the Commons, which were congenial and always fun, often lasting into the wee hours of the night. At faculty dinners at the end of the year, he and Joan would always make their way to each table to greet us.”

We extend our condolences to his daughter Cara Young Barretto ’93, son-in-law Rick Barretto, granddaughters Hope Barretto ’32 and Faith Barretto, and many other loving family members and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Park Tudor School in George’s memory.

Semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring. The national pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, and includes the highest scoring entrants in each state based on the 2018 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The Commended Students are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2020 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students place in the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2020 competition by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Head of School’s Contract Extended Through 2025 The Park Tudor Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Head of School, Gareth Vaughan’s contract has been extended for five more years, through the end of the 2024-25 school year.

Upper School Students Screen Heartland Film Festival Submissions

“Gareth has done a tremendous job leading the school through some challenges, and placing Park Tudor on a path to continued growth and success,” said Jeff Kimbell, President of the Park Tudor Board of Directors. “He has shepherded the school through a successful ISACS re-accreditation process, and has led the development and approval of an exciting Campus Master Plan. I am very pleased that he has agreed to continue in his leadership role as we embark on a Capital Campaign and implementation of the first phase of our Campus Master Plan.”

“I am very gratified that the Board has shown such confidence in my leadership,” said Gareth Vaughan. “Park Tudor is a wonderful community and I am thrilled that I will continue to be a part of it for the next five years.”

Third Annual Trivia Night Raises $23,000 to Support PT Athletics A sellout crowd attended the Park Tudor Booster Club’s third annual Trivia Night on Saturday, November 9. The evening raised approximately $23,000 to support PT Athletics, including $10,000 raised as part of a “mission bid” to complete various items on the Athletics Department’s “wish list,” like a new backdrop for college signings, a new Panther mascot costume, and renovating the press box.

Congratulations to the Basement Brainiacs, who won for the second year in a row. The team consisted of Associate Director of Admissions, Emily Groves ’93 and her husband, Jason; Assistant Director of Admissions, Beth Whitehead; Director of Strategic Communications, Cathy Chapelle ’87 and her husband, Joe; Jon Teller ’89 and PT parents Lance and Ellen Rettig. Thank you to the Booster Club and all of the volunteers who worked tirelessly to pull off a fantastic event!

For the fourth year, Park Tudor partnered with the Heartland Film Festival as part of the Janet Flanner Visiting Artist Series.

Through the partnership, students in grades 9-11 enjoyed a visit on October 11 from filmmaker Julie Sokolow, whose full feature documentary, Barefoot: The Mark Baumer Story, made its World Premiere at Heartland Film Festival. Julie introduced some of her film shorts, her feature documentary and discussed what it takes to be a filmmaker for social issues. Seniors traveled to AMC Castleton Theater to screen film shorts submitted to the festival by filmmakers from around the world.

The Janet Flanner Visiting Artist Series, a vital component of Connecting Classroom, Campus and Community, is designed to provide students with opportunities to have direct and meaningful contact with working artists. Always insightful, these discussions provide an opportunity to meet the artists and learn firsthand about their ideations, inspirations, and techniques.

About Janet Flanner: Janet Flanner was a member of the Tudor Hall class of 1909, and became well-known as a member of the "Lost Generation" of writers and author of the beloved "Letters from Paris" column in The New Yorker magazine.

Fifth Graders Experiment with Circle Gardens As part of the Environment unit in 5th grade science, students study germination of plants and environmental factors that might affect change in plant growth (particularly crop plants) over time. While students create specific plant experiments indoors, they are now also expanding the lesson by planting in the circle gardens in the Lower School Courtyard Garden. This year, the students were fortunate to have PT dad Luca Bonini donate a special organic plant food (primarily mycorrhiza, a naturally occurring fungus) from his company, Italpollina.

After students researched seeds to plant in the fall, they set up an experiment for a variety of radishes, kale, spinach, beets, and lettuces. Half of the circle gardens were planted with

the mycorrhiza and half had regular soil. Students have been collecting data through the fall and will continue to observe the circle gardens in the coming weeks. The students are amazed at the difference in growth. Mr. Bonini gave a presentation to the fifth graders, with more information about the symbiotic relationship between mycorrhiza and the roots of their plants. He also shared with them the exciting possible future opportunity of growing plants on the moon and maybe even on Mars.

Uruguayan Students and Teachers Visit Park Tudor Park Tudor’s long-standing exchange with Scuola Italiana de Montevideo continued this fall, when we welcomed a group of students and their teachers from Uruguay. This program offers students the extraordinary opportunity to meet friends from Uruguay and learn about their culture first-hand.

During their time in Indianapolis, our Uruguayan visitors enjoyed sightseeing trips around the city and attended classes at Park Tudor. Thank you to all of the families who graciously opened their homes to our guests.

Upper School Debate Team Starts Park Tudor Speaker Series Successful Season Sponsored by The National Bank of Indianapolis Welcomed Peter Gray The Debate Team made the long journey up to the Chicago area on October 5 to compete in its first contest of the year - the Munster High School All-Novice Tournament. Six Novice debaters did amazingly well competing in their first tournaments. The team placed five debaters in the top eight in their respective events, including a first and second place sweep in Public Forum debate for Clara Skovronsky & Audrey Wang and Chloe English & Pooja Krishnan, respectively. Emma Scifres also took fourth place in Student Congress and freshman Walker Gollapudi earned valuable experience in Lincoln-Douglas debate, arguing whether or not universities should consider standardized tests in their admissions procedures.

Later in October, the US Debate Team took 5th place sweepstakes team trophies at two tournaments - the annual Ben Davis Debate Tournament and the Munster High School Varsity-Novice Meet. The latter is the largest regular season tournament in Indiana with more than a hundred competitors from around the state.

A large part of the debate team’s success so far this year has been due to the performance of varsity Lincoln-Douglas debater and rising star Audrey Pan, who took 6th place overall at Ben Davis and 2nd place at Munster. To place 2nd at the Munster meet, Audrey had to score higher than 22 of the best debaters in Indiana. Rex Burkman also won a match and placed 10th at Ben Davis in this difficult event. Also at Ben Davis, Kate Fryburg and Jordan Pecar went undefeated (4-0) and took first place in novice Public Forum Debate, a two-on-two format where they argued the pros and cons of the European Union joining the Chinese BELT and ROAD Initiative. Two weeks later at Munster, they placed 3rd in the same event, besting 16 other teams.

Fellow public forum teams Pooja Krishnan & Audrey Wang and Walker Gollapudi & Aaron Gu tied for 5th place at Ben Davis (and had to fight over the ribbon!), while duos Arjun Kubal & Henry Wolfla and Lauren Kittle & Lauren Long both won their first matches as varsity teams.

We were pleased to welcome author Peter Gray on November 4 as part of the Park Tudor Speaker Series Sponsored by The National Bank of Indianapolis. Peter presented Play Deficit Disorder: A National Crisis and How to Solve It Locally for PT parents and the general public.

Research in the United States has revealed a dramatic decline in children’s free play—especially their free outdoor play—over the past several decades. This decline in play has been accompanied by dramatic increases in childhood depression and anxiety and by dramatic declines in creativity, internal locus of control, and psychological resilience. In his talk, Peter presented the logic and evidence behind his claim that the decline in free play is a, if not the, major cause of these deleterious effects on children’s wellbeing. He described some of the social forces that have led to the decline of play and suggested ways through which families, schools, neighborhoods, and communities can restore children’s opportunities for free play.

Peter Gray is a research professor of psychology at Boston College who has conducted and published research in neuroendocrinology, developmental psychology, anthropology, and education. He is the author of an internationally acclaimed introductory psychology textbook (Psychology, Worth Publishers, now in its 8th edition), which views all of psychology from an evolutionary perspective. His recent research focuses on the role of play in human evolution and how children educate themselves, through play and exploration, when they are free to do so. He has expanded on these ideas in his book, Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life (Basic Books). He also authors a regular blog called Freedom to Learn, for Psychology Today magazine. He is a founding member and president of the nonprofit Alliance for Self-Directed Education (ASDE), which is aimed at creating a world in which children’s natural ways of learning are facilitated rather than suppressed. He is also a founding board director of the nonprofit Let Grow, the mission of which is to renew children’s freedom to play and explore outdoors, independently of adults. He earned his undergraduate degree at Columbia College and Ph.D. in biological sciences at the Rockefeller University.

Park Tudor Announces Habitat for Humanity Build in 2020 One of many events in support of the 50th anniversary of the merger of Park School and Tudor Hall in 2020, Park Tudor will sponsor a Habitat for Humanity build scheduled for the fall.

Led by students Carly Weigel and Ethan Kacena-Merrell, Park Tudor will raise money to support the build and will coordinate shifts of volunteers to work on the home located in the Mapleton - Fall Creek neighborhood of Indianapolis. Fundraising efforts will start in the spring, with a goal of raising $85,000. As in years past, there will also be volunteer opportunities for students, faculty, parents and alumni.

This will be the ninth Habitat for Humanity build that the school has sponsored. “We are thrilled to partner with Habitat for Humanity again,” said Amy Kerr, Director of Community Engaged Learning at Park Tudor. “Particularly as we celebrate a milestone anniversary, it is important that we continue our role as fully engaged members of the Indianapolis community.”

Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity seeks to transform lives by partnering with families, individuals and communities to create and preserve affordable housing solutions. The benefits of their program extend beyond housing to support both the community and homeowners’ well-being.

Few communities are untouched by the effects of poverty.

Greater Indy is no different. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, nearly 20% of Marion County residents are in poverty, which the federal government defined in 2010 as a household income of $22,314 or less for a family of four.

A major barrier to breaking the cycle of poverty is homeownership. Owning a home is a significant means in helping provide a stable quality of life for low-income families and individuals. For some though, decent, affordable homeownership is out of reach. In Indiana, the average hourly wage necessary to afford a two-bedroom FMR unit is $14.03; more than half of Hoosier renters (52%) cannot afford the fair market rate, according to an Indiana 211 Partnership Community Report.

In our community many are paying more than they can afford for housing, not leaving enough for other necessities like good nutrition, health care, transportation, education or saving for the future.

Look for more information in the coming months as fundraising efforts and planning for the build begin.

Sports News— Girls Soccer Wins State Championship!

Girls Soccer The Girls Soccer team completed their historic season with a record of 22-2, capped off by the school’s first-ever girls soccer IHSAA Class 1-A State Championship. The Panthers defeated Lafayette Central Catholic 2-1 in the State Finals on November 1 at Fishers High School.

The team included 28 players with a varsity and JV schedule.

Following are some highlights from the season: • Senior captains Alicia Aaholm, Kaelie Paugh and Madelyn Baxter leave with the most wins in a four-year career at Park Tudor.

• Sophomore Colina Miroff led Indiana and the country in points for the season (130 points).

• Most wins in a season with 22.

• Most goals in a season with 128.

• Least goals allowed in a season with just 24 conceded.

• All 28 players lettered and played in varsity matches.

Cross Country

The 2019 season was a memorable one for the Park Tudor varsity volleyball team. With a 19-7 final record for the season and number 9 ranking in Class 2A, the Panthers exceeded all expectations.

The season started off with 8 straight wins over Shortridge, Irvington, International, Lutheran, Greenwood Christian, Speedway, Union County, and Central Christian Academy without dropping a set. The first ZRatings poll had Park Tudor ranked #1 in the state.

The Park Tudor Cross Country teams posted one of their most successful seasons in recent history. Led by seniors Jaden Seymour and Will Knitter, the boys finished second at the Conference meet, with Seymour and Knitter earning AllConference honors. The boys finished 8th at the Sectional meet, with both Seymour and Knitter advancing to the Regional meet. Led by freshman Sophia Kennedy, Brielle Vail, and Gretchen Farley, the girls finished first at the Conference meet, with Kennedy, Vail, Farley, Alicia Aaholm, and Gretchen Betz earning All Conference honors. The girls placed 6th at the Sectional meet, their highest finish in school history, with Kennedy, Vail, and Farley advancing to the Regional meet.

Sophia Kennedy went on to place 5th at the State Championship meet, earning All State honors and setting a new school record of 18:09.7.

The next weekend tourney at North Central saw Park Tudor lose three straight against three 4A schools with enrollments over 2500. PT lost to #9 4A Pendleton Heights 25-23, 28-26; Columbus North 16-25, 25-18,15-9; and North Central 28-26, 30-28.

PT followed up that performance with a 3-0 defeat of Bethesda Christian, a 3-1 defeat of 2017 conference champ Scecina, and a 3-0 victory over 2017 semi-state finalist Covenant Christian.

The following week saw the Panthers bring home three more victories over Guerin Catholic, Beech Grove, and Warren Central just in time for the conference tournament.

PT was 4-0 in the south half of the Pioneer Academic and Athletic Conference before the seeded tourney took place. The Panthers defeated Seton Catholic and University High School before falling to Muncie Burris in the championship match.

Park Tudor was eliminated in the second round of the Marion County tourney by powerhouse Lawrence North, 3-2. After the Panthers won the rematch vs. Warren Central, the Wildcats defeated PT by a score of 17-25, 25-21, 25-23, 18-25, 12-15. The Panthers racked up two more victories over Lapel and Pike to finish 19-6 for the regular season. In sectional play, Park Tudor was defeated by state champion Heritage Christian to finish off their season at 19-7.

SPORTS NEWS Isaac Hargett, Trace Held, Adam Katz, Arjun Kubal, Ellis Lacy, Brett Liebross, Benjamin Posey, Meyer Rothbaum, Dylan Sciscoe, Matthew Xie and Brian Zhu. In an effort to provide additional play, our JV team participated in the Carmel Invite and the HSE Royals JV Invitational. The events provided great competition and match play for the team, which finished in 6th place in the HSE Royals JV Invitational.

Thank you to the coaches this year: Head Coach Andrea Calvert-Sanders, and assistants Mat Fowler, Ethan Budiono, Charlie Emhardt and Scott Thygesen.

Boys Soccer The boys soccer team had a great season, finishing first in their conference, winning the Sectional championship and reaching the Regional Finals.

The team played each game with heart and endeavor. They had great camaraderie from the start, which carried the team deep into the season. The team started off strong and the players’ confidence grew throughout the season. It was a joy to watch the team compete and play their best soccer, culminating as the entire team rejoiced after David McWilliams scored the winning goal in the Sectional Final.

The Regional Final was played to a 1-1 draw, with the team eventually losing on penalty kicks. The boys showed great character and fight until the final whistle. After two overtimes the Panthers came up short at the penalty shootout.

Thank you to the senior captains David Wolfe Bender, Kevin O’Neill and David McWilliams for their leadership throughout the season.

Boys Tennis The Park Tudor Boys Tennis Team had a very competitive year in 2019. The team had 33 members with all levels of play. The varsity team finished the season with a 10-9 record and the JV team finished with a 5-6 record.

The Panthers were semi-finalists in the Marion County Tournament, but lost 3-2 to Brebeuf in the finals of the Sectional tournament. The doubles team of Eli Anderson and Adam Katz continued on in the IHSAA State individual tournament, losing in the Regionals to Plainfield.

Eli Anderson and Adam Katz were named All State Second Team Doubles. Brett Liebross and Meyer Rothbaum were All District Singles Honorable Mention. Trace Held and Brett Liebross were named Academic All State 1st Team.

The team captured the Pioneer Athletic Association Conference Championships at Ball State University. The following players were named All Conference: Eli Anderson, Jack Anderson, Harrison Davis, Brett Liebross, Meyer Rothbaum and Simon Rothbaum. Outstanding Academic Achievement for a Junior/ Senior earning a 3.75 GPA or higher went to Daniel Ehrlich,

Girls Golf The girls golf team enjoyed a fun-filled and challenging season.

The team competed across central Indiana in tournaments at Connersville, Lapel, and even the famed Crooked Stick Golf Club. As is typical with the game of golf, the players had some good days and some not so good days, but the girls showed a lot of grit and determination and had fun along the way. The Panthers were led by freshman Sia Patel, followed by sophomores Mary Kate Tanselle, and Audrey Wang who battled each other all season for the second and third positions on the team. Freshman Ryann Brock competed hard all season and showed consistent improvement to earn the fourth spot. Sophomore Isabel Goodwin and freshman Liviya Larman rounded out the varsity roster in the fifth and sixth positions providing some much-needed scoring depth for their teammates. The girls showed great character and steadily improved throughout the season. While the team was not able to advance from Sectionals as a group, Sia Patel was able to move on to Regionals as an individual player.

That accomplishment combined with her All County and All Conference honors made for a very successful individual campaign for Patel. We look forward to a bright future for the Park Tudor girls golf team!

Football The 2019 Park Tudor football season ended with a loss in the Sectional Championship game to #1-ranked Lutheran High School. With an overall 4-7 record, the Panthers made major strides in their performance this year on the field. Looking at the team’s growth, first-year Head Coach Spencer Summerville ’06 observed, “Progress is good, but it means nothing if we don’t keep going. We’re on our way and can’t stop now.” Anchored by just five seniors on the 33 man roster, the team is very positive about their future prospects.

Junior quarterback Reece Kizer lead the team in both passing and rushing. Sophomores CJ Thompson and Aaron Roach led the team in receptions and tackles, respectively. Park Tudor boasted a +6 Turnover/Takeaway margin. Statistical leaders in passing, rushing, receptions, tackles, field goals, and punting will all be returning next year. Of the eight players who made starts on the offensive line, six will be back.

Highlights for the year include wins versus Anderson Prep, Greencastle, Indiana Deaf and Oldenburg Academy. The game against Oldenburg was the Homecoming game, and the Panthers won it by a score of 28-24. This was only the team's second Homecoming win in a the last 15 years. Sophomore Captain Ty Lewis looked back at the victory with a smile on his face and noted, “When the student body rushed the field to celebrate, it was awesome.” The team's plan moving forward is to recreate that feeling, over and over.

Dear Friends of Park Tudor, The following 2018-2019 Annual Report recognizes the generosity of more than 1,200 donors to Park Tudor. These donors include current and past parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff. Your gifts provide tangible support for the school’s mission to provide an exceptional education and extraordinary opportunities to all our students. We are pleased to recognize the generosity of all our donors on the following pages.

In addition to their own generous financial support, many parents, alumni and faculty volunteer at events and other fundraisers throughout the year to encourage others to support the school. I’d like to highlight a few of these efforts: • In February, a committee of 14 parent volunteers planned and hosted the first “Uncorked,” a fundraiser to benefit the Park Tudor Annual Fund. This sold-out event was held at the world-famous Pagoda at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. More than 150 guests enjoyed an evening sampling fine wine from around the world, a live auction featuring one-of-a kind prizes and experiences, and the opportunity to take a “hot lap” around the IMS road course. This special evening raised more than $50,000 for the Annual Fund.

• In April, Park Tudor welcomed more than 500 alumni to campus for Reunion Weekend. Thanks to the energy and creativity of event planner Anne Rogers Mitchell ’85, along with other alumni volunteers, we were able to bring all reunion events to campus for the first time in many years. As part of the weekend, members of the Tudor Hall class of 1969 dedicated a handcrafted sun dial which they presented to the school as their reunion year gift.

• All three auxiliary parent organizations – the Park Tudor Parents’ Association, Booster Club and Fine Arts Guild – successfully created opportunities for parents to connect through signature events and volunteer opportunities.

These often “behind-the-scenes” volunteers spend countless hours helping to ensure our faculty and students are prepared and supported in the classroom, on the field or on the stage.

Beyond raising funds for the school’s programs and operations, the development office also maintains connections with Park Tudor alumni around the world. Last year, the school hosted an alumni reception in Chicago, and dinners for recent graduates at Indiana University, Purdue University, Notre Dame, DePauw and Wabash. Our Alumni Association also hosted their annual professional networking event in May, and a social evening at Top Golf. We are grateful to all our alums who took the time to join us to socialize, reconnect, and share memories of Park Tudor; we extend a special thanks to all who braved the Polar Vortex during our Chicago visit! And, my thanks to the members of the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association who provide critical leadership for all our efforts to engage with alumni.

Initiatives and Programs Supported

by Philanthropy in 2018–2019 Opportunity starts at Park Tudor. What students discover today will ignite passions tomorrow, and every day at Park Tudor is an inspiration. Both in and out of the classroom, students are free to explore their interests with guidance from educators who share their excitement. The Annual Fund is crucial to helping us prepare students for success in college and beyond.

Following are some of the opportunities and initiatives supported by the 2018-2019 Annual Fund: • Student artwork went on display at Newfields (formerly the Indianapolis Museum of Art) as part of the “Life & Legacy: Portraits from the Clowes Collection” exhibition.

• As part of our partnership with the Heartland Film Festival, sophomores and juniors screened the documentary film Phil’s Camino and heard a presentation by filmmaker/producer Annie O’Neill. Seniors traveled to AMC Castleton Theater to screen the Teen Shorts included in the festival.

• Students in 9th grade biology developed a 20m x 20m research plot located in the woods on the north side of the pond. They’ve used the plot to perform a variety of field ecology activities like measuring tree biodiversity and exploring the impact of invasive plant species.

• Eighth graders enjoyed their annual Boat Race tradition, held at the JCC. • JK students received safety tips from local police during JK bike day.

• In February, Rita Theadford Offett ’69 returned to campus to speak to Upper School students at an assembly as part of Black History Month. Rita Theadford Offett was the first black student to graduate from Tudor Hall.

• Panther Robotics Team PigPen traveled to Sunnyvale, California to compete at Google Headquarters. Team PigPen also won state and national VEX Robotics titles, and competed at the VEX Robotics World Championships in April in Louisville, Kentucky.

• Park Tudor faculty members launched a new “360” podcast and blog, with the goal of providing an all-around look at student-centered education. The podcast features interviews with leaders • Theater students and faculty spent in the field, and the blog gives faculty their spring break in London, enjoying members an opportunity to showcase a variety of performances and touring their innovation in the classroom. • The girls varsity soccer team won the 2018 IHSAA Regional Championship.

• Upper School students in Model United Nations traveled to Dayton, the University of Chicago, Georgetown University and The Hague for conferences.

• Dr. Delaney Ruston visited campus and gave presentations to faculty, students and parents based on her movie, “Screenagers.”

• The Upper School performed “Legally Blonde” to standing ovations and sellout crowds.

• Glenn Whitman, author of Neuroteach and a pioneer in Mind, Brain, Education (MBE) research, spent a day working with faculty and students, and giving a presentation to parents.

• Ming Choi ’98 returned to campus to perform for orchestra students.

• Middle and Lower School students marked disABILITY Awareness Week with guest speakers, puppet shows, and a scavenger hunt.

Alumni Feature: Jason Sondhi ’01 Forges His Path as a Successful Entrepreneur

Jason Sondhi ’01 founded his IT consulting company, Sondhi Solutions, in 2009. The company has been named by Inc. 5000 as one of the “Fastest Growing Private Companies,” and Jason has been recognized in the Indianapolis Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” list. I recently sat down with Jason to discuss what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur.

Tell me about your company.

Sondhi Solutions is an IT service provider, and that means we provide both IT solutions and resources for organizations.

Depending on the client, we can serve as the IT department for small companies, and for larger companies we can assist their IT departments in implementing various projects. We work with State and Federal governments, healthcare and life sciences companies, utilities – a variety of entities both big and small. I always say that our product is our people, so we strive to create a great corporate culture with many opportunities for ongoing education and a family atmosphere.

How did you decide to start your own business?

I was always interested in technology. I spent some time working in Governor Daniels’s administration, and that gave me an exposure to a lot of different businesses. Eventually I decided to go out on my own. Sondhi Solutions has grown to work with so many different companies; that always keeps it interesting and fuels my entrepreneurial spirit. And, we continue to branch

out – we’ve recently launched a separate company focused on cybersecurity, called SecureUp. SecureUp does cyber threat consulting, keeping track of cybersecurity trends and helping companies monitor and combat cyber attacks.

What are the most challenging and satisfying aspects of being an entrepreneur?

The most challenging part is never being completely satisfied.

Your company is your passion – it’s part of your life – so it’s a real challenge to take a break. The most satisfying aspect for me is the relationships that I’ve developed. It’s gratifying to build relationships with clients and help them develop their businesses on a daily basis, and I also really appreciate the relationships I’ve developed with my team – they’ve become like family.

learned to connect with a variety of different people at Park Tudor, and formed a great network. Once I got out into the business world, I realized that a lot of people that I wanted to work with have a connection to Park Tudor.

Who were some of your favorite teachers at Park Tudor?

Definitely Mr. Fumusa (college counselor and Upper School social studies teacher), and also Mr. Holbrook – he got me interested in math in Middle School. Also, Dr. Sharpless (Upper School English) encouraged out-of-the-box thinking. And I loved Mr. Ayres (former Middle School Director and English teacher).

What’s next for Sondhi Solutions?

We’re expanding nationally – we have offices in Phoenix and Washington, DC, and we’re looking at opening other offices around the country.

What advice do you have for Park Tudor students who might be interested in becoming an entrepreneur?

I would advise them to reach out to everyone in their network, but with direction. Don’t be afraid to ask for – and receive – pointed advice. You will be amazed at how many people want to help; you just have to be willing to reach out and talk about what you would like to do. In addition, don’t be afraid of risk.

I’ve learned the most from taking risks. Finally, be sure to always follow up. If you don’t follow up with the people that you meet with, you never know what you might miss.

How did your experience at Park Tudor give you the tools to become a successful entrepreneur?

Park Tudor really pushes you to be well-rounded. Not only did I learn technical skill sets; I also learned soft skill sets. I think the focus in tech has shifted from STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) to STEAM – with the addition of the arts, too. At Park Tudor, that’s always been the case. I also

Reflections on a Once-in-a-Lifetime Trip to China

Travel is a key factor in remaining a lifelong learner. It stretches the mind as aerobics stretches the body. Young, old, or in between, a plethora of knowledge awaits the openminded tourist. Whether one travels near, far or in between is a matter of choice and circumstance.

This summer I fulfilled a lifetime desire of “vacationing” in China. My husband and I were fortunate to travel part of the time with our son, Peter, his wife, and our three granddaughters. Pete is a 1994 graduate of Park Tudor, and his daughters all attend Park Tudor. Ashley is in the seventh grade, Livia is in the fourth, and Annabelle is in senior kindergarten.

They asked questions like, “Why do they drink snake juice?

Why don’t old women want their picture taken? Why do so many people want to take our picture?”

Realizing that a world of differences awaits one, both anxiety and excitement fight for top billing. Leaving one’s comfort zone is an understatement for this trip. We were regularly exposed to a culture and environment vastly different from the familiar. Perhaps for children it is less threatening to face a different currency, food, language, transportation, bathroom facilities, and customs, because they are not responsible for mundane activities. However, for them, not being able to read even the letters of an alphabet was unnerving. For the adults, a main adjustment was the driving. Who would have thought the shoulder was an express lane? In addition, the car horn is used for an entirely different reason than it is here. In China, it is a warning that the driver is indifferent to any traffic signs or signals. It is in your best interest to get out of the way, because he is coming through or turning regardless of any posted information to the contrary.

A day trip took them to West Lake in Hangzhou, which Marco Polo called “The City of Heaven, the most beautiful and magnificent in the world.” A second day trip took them to Zhouzhuang, called the “Venice of the East.” There are several villages just west of Shanghai that were built on canals, as there are many wetlands and lakes west of Shanghai. A special day for the girls was a trip to Shanghai’s Disneyland. This day was in the running as “best day ever.”

Their favorite evening activity was the Shanghai Acrobatics performance.

From Shanghai they journeyed to Ping’an Village, which is along the hills of the Longsheng Rice Terraces. The village was settled by two brothers centuries ago, and most of the residents share the same last surname. These terraces are a geometric art form that are uniquely irrigated. From there they flew into Guilin, home of the magical mountains. They stayed in Yangshou, a resort town, and took a cruise on the Li River through the picturesque karst Mountains.

It was quite the scene in the hotel lobby when we met up with them in Hong Kong. After 10 days of not seeing any familiar faces, Nana and Granddad were a very welcome sight. Our first morning in Hong Kong we walked the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, offering an abundance of spectacular views of Victoria Harbor. It winds along the waterfront in Kowloon from the Clock Tower to the Star Ferry Terminal. The afternoon was spent strolling through the Nan Lian Gardens. It, like most gardens in China, are true works of art beyond expectations.

The beauty of this garden’s landscaping is enhanced by a temple, waterfalls, hills, rocks, and wooden buildings.

Pete did extensive research arranging the itinerary and what was essential as far as communication, reservations, and transportation. Everyone added VPN, Google Translator, WeChat, Didi, and ApplePay to phones. These were useful in the modern cities of Shanghai and Hong Kong, but essential in Beijing and areas away from cities. A trip like this on one’s own would not have been feasible without phones connected to the Internet. One example of this necessity was a flight delay from Beijing to Shanghai, causing Pete and family to miss their return flight to O’Hare. He then had to translate and text through airport security and airport staff for three hours before he was able to find someone to help him locate acceptable accommodations for his family that evening.

Their journey began ten days prior to ours in Shanghai, a very modern, wealthy, and progressive city. They enjoyed the activities, shopping on the Bund side, and sights of this gorgeous city. In the part of Shanghai known as Pudong, two of the tallest buildings in the world (#2 and #11) reside, the

The following day was devoted to Lantau Island. We took a tour which first stopped at an overlook of the Tsing ma Bridge, which is the world’s 11th longest suspension bridge. It is reminiscent of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Our next stop was Tai o Village, which is known for its small houses built on stilts over the water. It is still an industrial fishing village, but it represents a bygone era. Interestingly, the people refuse to give up this way of life, but according to experts, their days are numbered. We were then treated to lunch at the Po Lin Monastery, which became a popular attraction when the Tian Tan Buddha statue, also known as the Big Buddha, was erected.

Our tour ended with a 25-minute ride down the mountain in the Ngong Ping cable car.

While we basically all did the same things, we did them separately. The one day we spent together in Hong Kong was at Disneyland. The girls said there were slight variations between Shanghai’s and Hong Kong’s parks, but Hong Kong received top marks. It had smaller crowds, shorter lines, and Nana and Granddad. Our day ended in the all-American way— dinner at McDonald’s.

Our final afternoon in Hong Kong was devoted to shopping at Stanley Market, a bargain hunter’s haven. The evening found us at the top of Victoria’s Peak, Hong Kong’s highest point. It offers a must-see view of the city’s skyline. The area also has

numerous unique boutiques and excellent restaurants.

The Peak Tram, which also offers excellent views, had just reopened after extensive work, so we were fortunate to ride it both up and down.

Beijing was our next stop. Our flight arrived late afternoon, and by the time we were settled, rain had settled in for the evening.

Even though Sam and I braved trying a variety of Chinese food items, we were quite happy with the restaurant we found just an archway away from out hotel. We were regular diners at, of all places, Molly Malone’s.

Our first full day took us to the Great Wall, and the rain had not abated. Disappointed, we left for the Summer Palace, which is exquisite. Even though the rain continued, we were able to fully appreciate the grandeur of days gone by. It is a testament to the opulence of past dynasties with its 2.9 square kilometers of lakes, gardens, and palaces.

It was necessary to revisit the Great Wall the next day, when the weather was gorgeous. The richness of China’s history and culture is evident throughout the country, but it peaks at the Great Wall. As I walked, and watched my three granddaughters walk along the Great Wall, I was consumed by imagining the back-breaking labor that was involved in its construction.

Not far from my mind was the necessity to learn about the conquests that took place throughout centuries along these same paths.

Our final day in Beijing found us at Tiananmen Square, where the past is quite familiar to us, but not to the younger Chinese population. It is not a subject for conversation or discussion.

Tiananmen Square is across the street from the Forbidden City, which was the only place in China we visited that required us to have our passports and registration prior to arrival and admittance. It is basically a mini city. It is the largest palace complex and is comprised of more than 90 palaces and courtyards, 980 buildings, and 9,000 rooms. It was the home of 24 Chinese emperors for over 500 years. The design seemed redundant to me, and as a consequence, it seemed to go on forever. I’m certain the heat played a factor in this frustration.

Each time we went into a new area, we thought we were coming to the exit. Nonetheless, it is a must see for the firsttime tourist. The girls were treated to fun time at Jingshan Park after their tour. They were always fortunate to find playmates.

That evening, our last in China, found us shopping, and the thrill was to finish using all of our yuan.

Both cities we visited were progressive, modern, and lacked courteous drivers. They were also more prosperous than their neighboring rural areas. A major difference in the two cities was the use of a credit card. They are not widely accepted in Beijing.

Throughout China, the people were extremely courteous and more than willing to be helpful. They went out of their way to be kind, and these were not people who would benefit from the tourist dollar. There were differences we observed in the people of the two cities, though. In Hong Kong almost everyone spoke English, whereas in Beijing it was not as likely to find those who spoke English. In Hong Kong people were very open with their opinions, and seemed quite resilient. Beijing’s people were much more reserved and resigned. The people in Hong Kong also seemed more carefree and lighthearted. Even though there were protests going on, they did not interfere with the flow of life while we were there. Please realize that all opinions are based on personal experiences, and naturally those experiences were limited.

Embrace travel and take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself. It is the window to the world. Open it as often and as wide as you can, and breathe the fresh air. Travel speaks to the soul. Regardless of the challenges one encounters, it is encouraging to realize differences are not a cause for fear or dislike, but they are avenues to understanding and accepting the possibility that one day the world will grow and prosper by living and working together in peace.

Alumni News This past October, the Alumni Board hosted its fourth annual pumpkin carving event at the Lilly Orchard where several alumni and current PT families enjoyed an afternoon of Fall fun. The Fall gathering has grown each year along with alumni attendance at home football games and tailgates. Go Panthers!

The 2019-2020 Alumni Board is excited to announce the launch of a student-led grant opportunity for current Park Tudor students. The grant initiative will allow Park Tudor classes, organized groups, clubs and individual students, at every grade level, the opportunity to earn funding directly from the Alumni Board for academic, community or other extracurricular undertakings. This grant initiative will further foster Park Tudor’s long-standing tradition of experiential learning while raising awareness to students, our future alumni, of the Park Tudor family’s commitment to their success.

Greetings from Your Alumni Board President I am honored to be the new Park Tudor Alumni Board president and appreciate the support and encouragement I have received from past president, Beth Tolbert Johnson ’03. The Alumni Association, which dates back to the days of Park School and Tudor Hall, has remained vital with an active base of Park Tudor students, faculty and more than 4,500 alumni around the world.

The Alumni Board has strengthened alumni engagement this year through several successful events. We hosted a professional networking event downtown, a social gathering at Top Golf and meet and greets in Chicago, Naples, and Washington D.C. Head of School Gareth Vaughan, along with faculty and staff, have visited many of our young alumni at Notre Dame, DePauw, Wabash, Purdue and Indiana University. The attendance at these events is evident of the lifelong connections Park Tudor instills in its community members.

Finally, the Alumni Board intends to place more focus on service within the community, working in conjunction with the Park Tudor Community Engaged Learning program. From coordinating a blood drive to helping on a Habitat for Humanity build, we want to encourage community service among alumni.

Welcome New Alumni Board Members Molly Foglesong Sturman ’93 holds a MS degree in Physical Therapy from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and a PhD in Movement Neurosciences from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She was active in both fields until 2008. Molly and her husband Jason Sturman ’93 have three children all of who attend Park Tudor: Jack (9th grade), Elizabeth (7th grade), and Charlotte (6th grade). Molly is involved in school life at Park Tudor both as a parent and an alum. She most enjoys spending time with her family and friends, and she’s an avid runner.

Melanie Vitalis ’99, attended Indiana University, where she received her B.A. from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. She then attended law school at Wayne State University. After graduation, Melanie practiced law at Bodman PLC in Detroit, Michigan. She later returned to Indianapolis where she practiced at Ice Miller. Melanie currently works as in-house counsel at Eli Lilly and Company. She has two daughters, Mary (12) and Marielle (6) who both attend Park Tudor. In her free time, Melanie enjoys traveling and spending time with family.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES: David Wolfe Bender ’20 serves as an editor for Park Tudor’s literary and arts magazine (the Artisan), newspaper (the Tribune), and yearbook (the Chronicle).

He also created Students United, a podcasting and storytelling network for high school and college students, which will begin releasing podcasts this December.

David has received several awards, including a national championship, as a member of Panther Robotics, where he also donates his time to serve other teams and events within the state. In April 2019, he was selected as a Neuharth Scholar of Journalism, a prestigious annual award presented to one senior per state. David also participates in Model United Nations and was captain of the Park Tudor men’s soccer team.

Holly Rogers ’20 serves as Publicity Officer for the Model United Nations club and is a member of Student Council, Environmental Club, and CLIP (Contemporary Legal Issues and Politics). This AP scholar has been awarded Academic Distinction all four years of high school. Holly is captain of the Park Tudor tennis team and a member of the swim team. She has spent her summers abroad in Nepal and the Dominican Republic partaking in community service, building homes and an orphanage for those in need.

Lisa Hendrickson recently completed a book that tells the true story of three women who helped to settle the American West, including the first woman to own and operate dude ranches in Montana and Arizona. Lisa is currently in search of a literary agent to assist her in getting the book published.

Anton Thompkins was inducted into the DePauw University Athletics Hall of Fame for his achievements in soccer on September 28, 2019.

1982 Tracey Strohm Phillips’s debut mystery/thriller novel Best Kept Secrets released on October 8. Before publication, the manuscript won a Hugh Holton Award from Mystery Writers of America. Tracey is a serial artist and the daughter of an artist and Tudor Hall alum (Ann Eckerson ’61) and granddaughter of a pianist and Tudor Hall alum (Lucina Moxley ’39). Tracey is the mother of two grown children. She teaches piano lessons and lives in Madison, Wisconsin with her husband and two dogs.
