9th - 12th Grade A Nation in Conflict: American Civil War Studies 1 Credit $1,650 Kathryn Lerch Park Tudor History Teacher Chris Hammock Park Tudor Support Specialist Class: June 6- 24; Travel: June 11-18 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. According to Civil War historian James M. McPherson, “the Civil War was the most momentous event in American history” which “profoundly altered the landscape.” A casualty count of one million out of a population of 32 million from 1861 through 1865 cannot be looked upon as solely a study in military history, but as a study of a society
at war. (McPherson, Writing the Civil War). The three-week cross-curricular and teamtaught summer school elective, “A Nation in Conflict,” will be framed around significant historical events, famous battles such as at Antietam and Gettysburg, the Emancipation Proclamation, the evolution of Civil War medicine, African Americans in the Civil War, and the impact of the war on the nation’s psyche and in memory.
June 6 – June 24, 2016 Class will meet for three hours each morning. Travel dates will be June 11-18th.
Civil War photographs and documents at the Library of Congress, and participated in field trips.
Tentative Itinerary and Places of Interest: • Cumberland, MD [B&O Railroad center; historic town] • Frederick, MD [Museum of Civil War Medicine; walking tour of Civil War-era town; Cemetery tour of Confederate graves] • Martinsburg, WV [Belle Boyd House & Museum; Historical Society for docent work] • Sheperdstown, WV [Confederate Cemetery; Pry House Field Hospital Museum] • Harper’s Ferry & Maryland Heights [Civil War site and National Park] • Antietam Battlefield [Cemetery and National Park, Sharpsburg, Md] • Carlisle, PA & Gettysburg, PA [Gettysburg town and battlefield; Carlisle Barracks & town] • Washington, D.C. [National Archives for Civil War pension searches; Library of Congress]
The final project is due two weeks after the end of the course (July 8). This project may include a photo journal or blog based on field work, a portfolio of Civil War letters and/ or photographs, or analytical research essay based on creative and careful use of primary documents. There will be daily discussion of research findings, and encouragement for collaborative efforts in all aspects of the course. Progress in the course will be assessed with frequent, yet short formative and summative assessments. There will be out-of-class reading assignments with prompts for class discussions.
This three-week seminar has evolved out of a semester-long course on the Military History of the American Civil War, and it has been combined with field trip experiences similar to Legacy Initiative trips to Washington, D.C. Previously students have researched Civil War pensions at the National Archives, located

As an inter-disciplinary and historiography course, students will have an opportunity to read and analyze original primary source Civil War-era materials (letters, photographs,
Pre-trip work will emphasize setting the historical foundation, developing historiogra-
maps, diaries, newspapers, pension files, etc.), read and discuss Civil War literature, and visit selected historic sites. Students will learn to empathize with those individuals who participated in this transformation of American society. Resources include private collections as well as the Legacy Initiative’s maps, letters, newspapers, photographs, etc. and the Words of War anthologies. There will be a travel week at mid-course when students will alternately visit battlefields and complete research at the National Archives, or other research institutions. Materials acquired on the trip will also be used for student projects.
phy skills, and developing a couple of possible project ideas. During the trip, the emphasis will be on problem-solving in research, locating and interpreting new Civil War resources, analyzing sites in the historical context, and looking at museum artifacts from a 19th century perspective, while confirming the potential project subject and design. In the final week students may work collaboratively as they discuss and analyze their research materials, and how they will develop their final project for faculty and peer review. The initial goal is to expose students to the wealth of historical materials from the Civil War period. Through this exposure, it is hoped that students will come to understand the inter-connectedness of war and social issues. A secondary objective is to encourage a high level of critical reading and thinking skills, and instilling in students the concept
9th - 12th Grade that problem-solving is key also to doing historical research. The field experience is also integral to linking observations to a deeper understanding of the military events and social consequences of a war. Also, hands-on experience in the National Archives builds student confidence, independence and develops their skills for both collaborative and independent work in the future. This course is ideally suited for the advanced, motivated and intellectually curious history student. Due to the rigor of the course, as well as its fast pace and seminar format, it is well suited for sophomores and up, or an exceptional freshmen with prior permission of the instructor. Space is limited due to travel restrictions (van size and accommodations in Washington, D.C.) Cost for the class and the trip will be $1,650 (Includes: tuition, travel expenses, hotel
accommodations, breakfast and dinner students will need pocket money to purchase lunch). 9th - 12th Grade Southern Studies 1 Credit $1,200 Jane Sidey: Park Tudor English Teacher Sven Dubie: Park Tudor Social Studies Teacher June 6 – 17 Classroom: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. June 19 – 25 Travel Park Tudor is pleased to announce that students will again have the opportunity to take Southern Studies, an accredited, cross-curricular, team-taught, elective in June 2016. Students in this seminar will engage in a philosophical enquiry of how environment and place work to shape identity and culture. They are challenged to look at the South through the lenses of history, literature, music, art and architecture, and foodways. They will spend two weeks of classroom study followed by one week traveling to several Southern states in order to connect experi-
36
entially with the landscape, geography and environment of the South. Now in our second year, we will focus our attention on North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia and the ways the history and colonial economies of these regions created the social and cultural values that we associate with a particular Southern way of life. Highlights will include visits to the Institute of Southern Studies at the University of South Carolina, Anson Mills Farm in Columbia, a tour of Charleston, Savannah and the Gullah and coastal regions of the Georgia Sea Islands. I n keeping with the interdisciplinary nature of the class, artistic activity, broadly speaking, will be an important area of focus in this class. The rich diversity of the Southern artist
conjures a peculiar paradox. It forces students to grapple with the problem of reconciling writers, musicians, chefs, and photographers as different as William Faulkner, Alice Walker, Natasha Trethewey, B.B. King, Sally Mann, Sean Brock, Eudora Welty, and Flannery O’Connor, who all claim to depict an essentially Southern experience. Indeed, historians from W.J. Cash to C. Vann Woodward to James Cobb have long engaged in a fierce debate of what constitutes Southern identity, and it is important that students add their ideas and perceptions to the conversation. By visiting the cities and places that give rise to these diverse and complex interpretations of what it means to be Southern, students are made visually aware of the living dichotomies of the past and present, Old South and the New South, urban renewal and rural tradition, and homogeneity and diversity.
9th - 12th Grade
The class is reading and writing intensive, and students will also complete an interdisciplinary project—such as a photo journal, a travelogue, or a writing portfolio —as their final assessment.

Dates and Cost: The class will meet for three hours every morning from June 6th to June 17th with travel taking place during the third week (Sunday, June 19th – Saturday, June 25th) of class. Cost for the class and the trip will be $1,200 (Includes: tuition, travel expenses, hotel accommodations, breakfast and dinner students will need pocket money to purchase lunch).

Spanish Immersion Francisco Hidalgo (Program Director) World Languages Department Grades K-5 June 6 - July 1 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. $375/week (minimum 2 weeks) 15% off if you sign-up for all 4 weeks. (*Note: Registration concludes on May 1st.) Spanish Immersion Summer Program is back! It is a really unique program that combines an outstanding opportunity for learning with a fun and relaxed summer camp. Immersion is the secret to learning a foreign language. We are proud to offer this peerless language experience for Lower School students. What do you mean by immersion? Learning a foreign language by living it. • The student not only attends formal language classes but also lives the language. • All classes are taught entirely in Spanish.
46
• Speaking in another language at any time is discouraged or forbidden. • All cultural activities are presented and experienced in Spanish. • The student lives in a completely Spanishspeaking community. Why immersion? • We want our students to really learn the language. • It is fun. • Students gain an understanding of a different culture. • It is the fastest, most efficient way to improve oral command of a foreign language. Why Spanish? Spanish is, after English, the second most widely spoken language in the world. It is spoken by over 400 million people, and it is the official language of 22 countries. In the US alone, it is spoken by an estimated 50 million
people with the Latino population as the fastest growing minority in the country. What can I expect from the program? • Typically, students who participate in a 4-week immersion program experience a great boost in oral skills. • Capacity to understand the language improves exponentially, strengthening future learning of Spanish or other languages. Much more than just language classes! Improving students’ language skills is our main goal, but we offer much more than that. Our program approaches complete, Spanish cultural immersion in the comfort of Indianapolis. From the moment students enter campus, they are “officially” in Spain. They will not speak English, and they will experience a broad range of the Spanish cultural activities such as music, drama, games, sports and cinema.
Spanish Immersion A typical day in the immersion program: • 9 a.m. Passport check-in “Bienvenidos a España” 1st class period: Spanish culture • 10:00 a.m. 2nd Class period: Spanish language and Grammar • 10:50 a.m. Break • 11:00 a.m. 3rd class period: Conversation • 12:00 p.m. lunch and recess • 1:00 p.m. Sports and games • 2:00 p.m. Afternoon activities: Drama, Choir, Latin dances, cooking, swimming, field trips, movies, and more. *Scheduling varies from one division to another.
What is new? Grandparents day: As in previous years, we are celebrating an open house for parents on Wednesday, June 29th (9-11am). Additionally, this year we are opening our doors to grandparents and special friends on Thursday, June 30th (9-11am). Come and see your grandchildren in action in Spanish!

Innovators Institute Innovators Institute
July 5 – July 22 $1200 Monday –Thursday, 8.30 a.m. – 3.30 p.m.; Friday, 8.30 a.m. -1.30 p.m. The Park Tudor Innovators Institute Summer Program is a unique opportunity for students entering grades 9-12 to learn the skills needed to be successful in college and beyond, while becoming leaders in their fields of interest. Students will learn how to think and act like innovators by developing skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, communication, and collaboration while gaining hands-on experience in cutting edge courses. Students will be given three days of innovation skills training followed by two weeks of instruction by Park Tudor faculty in a field of the student’s choosing, including: • iDesign (Design Thinking): iDesign is a hands-on, collaborative class that teaches students how to solve real-world problems. It is an experiential course designed to
engage students with the needs of their greater community. iDesign is based on the Design Thinking method, developed by David and Tim Kelley at Stanford University and IDEO. In this course, students understand and experience the ways in which empathy, brainstorming, prototyping and iteration can produce truly innovate products. Students are not taught about design thinking; they are doing design thinking by tackling authentic, community-based challenges. • PT School of Enterprise (Business Creation): The School of Enterprise will both expose students to the world of businesses/ start-ups and also give them experience of what it is like to start a business themselves. Through time, talking with leading business owners and through hands-on challenges, students will experience first-hand what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur. They will run a ‘business-in-a-day’ as well as perform live market research with the Indianapolis public. The module culminates in a competition
where students get to pitch their business ideas to a panel of leading business owners for a chance to be mentored in the following months. From start to finish this is about giving young people the tools to help their innovative ideas flourish. • Social Entrepreneurship: Social entrepreneurship is more than just community service, more than just leadership, more than just ideas. It combines the skills of a visionary leader with the heart of a servant to create a lasting impact in the local area. Social entrepreneurship uses one’s innovative thinking and pairs his/her passion to serve others to help meet a community need. In this program, students will research, carry out and present a service learning project in our community. Ultimately, through active, hands-on learning, students will become contributing citizens who exhibit strong character, integrity and purpose. Financial Assistance is Available: One of the goals of the Institute is to make it accessible to all students, regardless of financial circumstances. Scholarships and financial aid are available for students who would benefit from the program. Please contact Peter Kraft at pkraft@parktudor.org for more details.
