Park Tudor Cub Camp Studio Created especially for our youngest campers, Cub Camp Studio sessions are designed to foster a culture of inquiry through art, scientific exploration and guided discovery. Campers will use a variety of materials as thinking tools to tell their stories, investigate, experiment and represent their thoughts and ideas. Summer provides the perfect backdrop for open-ended, playful exploration of the physical world. Weekly themes are openended by design, allowing space for campers to pursue their individual passions and interests within the classroom. Our youngest campers will be invited to imagine, play, design, concoct and create in a relaxed environment moving at the pace of summer.
Week1 June 5 – June 9: Moving in Circles
A circle is a symbol that is easily recognized by children and is the basis of many of their first representations on paper. It is also found frequently in nature. How might we use circles through art, movement, games and songs? Where do we see circles in letters and numbers? What happens when we make a circle move?
Week 2 June 12 – 16: Lines and Dots
Paul Klee famously said, “A line is a dot that went for a walk.” Artists use dots and lines to make geometric shapes, define spaces, create patterns and show movement. Cub campers will experiment with different methods of making lines using a variety of materials. How might lines help us to sort and classify objects? What do we notice when we put numbers on a line? What shapes are made when lines intersect?
Week 3: June 19 - 23: Water Works
An essential element for all forms of life, water is all around us and this seemingly simple element provides many opportunities for children to experiment with math and science concepts as well as language and creative development through play. Where can we find water? What stories can we tell about water? How might we use water to create art? What lives in water? Will it float or sink?
Week 4 June 26 - 30: Potion Lab
Cub campers will have messy fun making potions of all kinds this week! Through mixing ingredients, children will experiment with making liquids, solids and everything inbetween. Cub campers will widen their sensory experiences as they put their hands in different textures, observe the reactions that occur when substances are mixed, and see what they can create with different states of matter. What happens when we mix ingredients together? How does the reaction change when we change ingredients? What textures do we notice? What concoctions can we use to make art?
Week 5 July 3 – 7: Nature Investigations
Summer provides the perfect backdrop for exploring the outdoors. This week will be spent taking a closer look at Indiana’s natural treasures through stories, nature hikes, animal investigations and exploration of local habitats. What do we see in our backyard? What can we find when we use a magnifying glass? How might we create art with natural materials? What patterns do we notice in nature?
Week 6 July 17 – 21: Imagination in a Box
The simple cardboard box might be the most versatile and interesting toy in existence whose uses are limited only by one’s imagination. Using literature as a springboard, we will tinker with boxes of all sizes this week, exploring concepts such as solid shapes, volume and measurement and relative position. Art opportunities abound with cardboard and found objects in the mix. What might you create with a box? What fits inside? How many boxes tall are you? How else might we use boxes for measurement? What can you build with a box?
Week 7 July 17 – 21: Me and My Shadow
Young campers will explore light and shadow indoors and out using a variety of light sources. Children will have opportunities to observe, measure and trace shadows and experiment with making them change in size and shape. We will explore a variety of literature featuring shadows and explore shadow puppets and shadow dancing. Where does light come from? What happens when you put light behind different objects? How can you make a shadow? How do shadows change?
Week 8 July 24 – 28: Masterpiece Makers
Our last week of Cub Camp will focus on exploring the art techniques of famous artists and making them our own. In this camp, children will enjoy a balance of open art exploration combined with guided projects inspired by famous works and children’s literature. What can we create with paint, fabric, clay, wire or photography? How does the medium change our expression? What can we learn from looking at art?

Southern Studies Southern Studies Instructors Jane Sidey: Park Tudor English Sven Dubie: Park Tudor History 1 Credit...............................................................Price: $1,250 June 5 - 16: Classroom Mon - Fri 9:00 a.m.-12:00p.m. June 17 - 24: Travel Southern Studies, an accredited, cross-curricular, team-taught elective, is back for its third year. Students in this seminar engage in a philosophical enquiry of how environment and place work to shape identity and culture. They are challenged to look at the South through the lenses of history, literature, music, art and architecture, and foodways. As in previous years, students spend two weeks of classroom study followed by one week travelling to several Southern states in order to connect experientially with the physical and cultural geography of the South. This summer, we plan to spend some time in those states often referred to as “the Deep South,” whose residents proudly see themselves as “true Southerners.” We will focus our attention on the rise of King Cotton and the expansion and explosion of the domestic slave trade, the outcome of the Civil War and the tumultuous period known as Reconstruction, the implementation of Jim Crow segregation, and the Civ-

il Rights Movement. Of course, all this history will be complemented by some of the most inventive and inspiring literature ever produced in the United States, a healthy dose of the Delta Blues, an introduction to some iconic Southern photographers, and finally, lots of really delicious food. Just a few highlights are likely to include visits to Beale Street in Memphis, the Whitney Plantation in Louisiana, the French Quarter in New Orleans, Kelly Park and Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham, and Harper Lee’s hometown. We’ll retrace the Selma to Montgomery march and mingle with the ghosts of Union and Confederate troops in Shiloh, Tennessee.

Foodways expert Glenn Roberts of Anson Mills in Columbia South Carolina explains the importance of heirloom grains and seeds.
In keeping with the interdisciplinary and experiential nature of the class, artistic activity, broadly speaking, is an important area of focus. At the heart of Southern Studies lies the essential question of how we reconcile the profoundly different visions of writers, musicians, chefs, artists and historians who all claim to depict and explain the South. Consequently, students should expect to grapple with the paradoxical nature of Southern identity by engaging in a number of hands-on classroom activities. By visiting the cities and places that give rise to these diverse and complex interpretations of what it means to be Southern, our students are made visually aware of the living dichotomies of the past and present, Old South and New South, urban renewal and rural tradition, and homogeneity and diversity.

Space for the class is limited, and although formal registration will be open in February, interested students and families may direct all initial enquiries to Jane Sidey (phone: 317 501-0442; email: jsidey@parktudor.org) or Sven Dubie (phone: 317 415-2884; email: sdubie@parktudor.org).
The class is reading and writing intensive and students also complete an interdisciplinary project - such as a photo journal, travelogue, or writing portfolio - as their final assessment. Dates and Cost: The class meets for three hours every weekday from June 5th to June 16th with travel taking place during the third week (Saturday June 17th - Saturday June 24th). Academy students will join our Summer Stock Stage teenage cast members in the spotlight performing in the family favorite, Aladdin Jr. For the first week campers will meet daily and work with Summer Stock Stage artistic staff to learn music and choreography. The second week is “tech week” for Aladdin Jr. and Academy members will be rehearsing Monday and Tuesday evening. Performances will be Wednesday, June 21 – Sunday, June 25 in the Ayres Auditorium.
Students will be double cast, so each student will be in three performances. There will be no daytime camp the week of June 19. All rehearsals and assigned performances are mandatory. There will be two casts. Tickets are being held for all performances so parents will be able to purchase good seats once their student is placed in a cast. www.summerstockstage.com
