News of the School Report from the Head of School: Strategic Planning Process Nears Completion
As we enter the final stages of the strate-
gic planning process (“PT2020”), I wanted to review several of our original goals and share several reference points for future consideration. It has been an incredible journey and I speak for the Strategic Planning Steering Committee when I say that we are extremely pleased with the results. When we began this process eighteen months ago, we knew that we were working from a position of market and financial strength. Moreover, we recognized that we had the responsibility to build on the school’s traditions and rich history, to honor the past while also looking toward the future. As we have stressed throughout, the process of developing the Strategic Plan has been as important as the product. Our goal has been to make the process inclusive of all constituent groups, iterative by design, mission-led and values-driven. These are important observations since they gave early definition to the plan’s depth and dimension and the scale of the journey we were undertaking. Let me offer a few observations about the process and the architecture of the plan: • We’ve conducted more than eighty learning sessions and focus groups, ranging from parent learning sessions to alumni groups, student and faculty sessions, and various Indianapolis community leaders. At each juncture, feedback has been filtered through the eighteen-member Steering Committee, the Board, and among the administrative team. • As the process has evolved, it has been important to iterate and to continue to refine and develop the narrative. After the initial learning sessions, we have been careful to update the community as the process has continued and, to the degree possible, to check in on all aspects of the emerging plan. Our three focus areas—academics, community, and sustainability— have provided an excellent platform within which to set goals and identify further areas of inquiry. • Finally, our major emphasis has been on the foundational aspects of the plan: mission, vision, and values. We started the process by defining our ‘Core Values’ with
4
the entire Park Tudor community and have already begun to make them operational. Through this process, the mission and vision have also come into sharper focus, and these three key documents are driving our goals and actions. We have also used this opportunity to review our overall brand, including our communications and brand strategy. While the strategic plan is a discrete document within this larger framework, we will continue to refine our branding and work on developing greater consistency and clarity of presentation. The foundational documents—mission, vision, and values—are intended to be read together, each providing depth and dimension and creating, in combination, a series of interwoven statements that work together. In isolation, each of the documents tells an important part of the story, but together the three documents form a cohesive narrative about our school that firmly grounds our actions, curricular decisions, and programming opportunities. As you can imagine, this foundation is essential, for it defines our work as an independent school and further refines what we are and, perhaps more importantly, what we are not. As we move forward, it is important to remember that we are creating a plan and focus areas to guide us for the next six years. Excellent strategic plans are responsive, fluid, and highly adaptable; therefore, broad, general goals are more suitable to strategic planning than a host of operational action items. With this in mind, I want to share a few points that will help to answer potential questions about process and next steps. While our mission, vision, values, areas of focus, and broad goals will remain consistent, the action items that provide specific details for achieving these will constantly evolve and will need to be reviewed annually. This is highly appropriate given the evolving landscape of our environment and the nature of planning in general. On a yearly basis, we will establish areas of prioritization and within that, concrete action items that will form the focus and goals for the year. Some actions will
Dr. Matthew D. Miller
be highly accessible and easy to implement quickly; others will have a multi-year arc and in some cases, will always be in progress. In support of the year’s action items, we will create specific metrics of success that will help our community visualize both the process and the outcomes; in doing so, we will be transparent about how we define and understand success. Finally, it is also important to remember that our emerging strategic plan, along with the school’s master plan and facilities audit, form both the philosophical and concrete plan of action for the next several years. The community should think of these documents as institutional points of reference that will direct and highlight theory and action, as well as provide us with a framework within which to consider all aspects of our progress and growth. I want to thank everyone who has been involved with this process—we have cast a wide net and are pleased that the results. Our plan builds on our tradition of success and moves us in thoughtful ways to the next chapter of the school’s evolution. I know that I speak for the entire community when I say that, once we have officially finalized the plan later this fall, we are excited to begin to work on the first group of goals, actions, and priorities. As always, I look forward to your feedback and thoughts.

Cagle Gate Dedicated on October 3
Middle School Marks WaterWeek
Middle School students spent the week
of September 15 observing WaterWeek, becoming more aware of the plight of the 1 in 8 people worldwide who lack access to safe and clean drinking water. The consequences of this are staggering - 443 million school days are lost each year due to waterrelated diseases, and in developing countries, as much as 80% of illnesses are linked to poor water and sanitation conditions. Each day during WaterWeek, students learned about water through classroom lessons and activities. A highlight of WaterWeek was Dry Day; on this day, water and restroom facilities in the Middle School were not available for use, and students and faculty were asked to use the bathrooms and water fountains in the gym. Students were also asked to carry two one-gallon milk jugs filled with water when walking to the gym; the milk jugs represented the much heavier “jerry cans” that are carried several miles daily to retrieve water in many developing nations. As part of this service learning project, the Middle School has joined forces with an organization called Charity:Water and has launched Project:Well to raise money to build a well in a developing nation. For Project:Well, Middle School students designed and sold water bottles during Water Week, and sold water at all after-school continued on page 6.

ark Tudor students, parents, faculty and alumni gathered with Steve Cagle ’71 and his friends and family to dedicate the new Cagle Gate on October 3. The gate was made possible thanks to a generous gift from Steve. As part of a new tradition, this year’s Freshman Retreat began with the class of 2018 becoming the first to symbolically begin their high-school careers by entering campus through the Cagle Gate. The class of 2014 exited campus through the Cagle Gate in May; last year’s seniors eagerly embraced this new tradition which builds on the rich history of Park Tudor. Park Tudor Students Study in Spoleto, Italy
F
ive Park Tudor juniors - Clare Chandler, Peyton Duiser, Annie McCarter, Lizzie Polak, and Rachel Hardacker - attended the Spoleto Study Abroad 2014 arts & humanities immersion program this summer in Spoleto, Italy. This interdisciplinary program featured a dynamic curriculum in the arts and humanities. Twice weekly daytrips to cultural centers such as Florence, Orvieto, and Sienna offered students the opportunity to experience significant artistic, cultural, and historic treasures first-hand. These talented Park Tudor students were part of a select group chosen for this intensive summer study abroad program. Clare participated in the visual arts program, and Peyton, Annie, Lizzie, and Rachel participated in the photography program. Park Tudor is an active member of the select consortium of schools across the country that supports the Spoleto Study Abroad program mission. Spoleto Study Abroad is committed to bringing an integrated style of learning to those students interested in pursuing their academic and artistic interests as they explore the rich cultural heritage of central Italy.

Twelve Students from La Reunion visit Park Tudor
Twelve students from La Reunion, a
French Department located in the Indian Ocean approximately 500 miles east of Madagascar, spent 10 days visiting Park Tudor as part of a new exchange program. During their time here, the students lived with host families and were fully integrated into school life - attending classes and viewing the sites in Indianapolis and beyond. Because their visit overlapped with Fall Break, some of the students had the opportunity to travel with their host families to New York, Chicago and Florida. The students were accompanied on the trip by Fabienne Lossy, the Headmistress of their school (La Salle Maison Blanche) and Sylvie Saint Andre, an English teacher and the coordinator of the exchange in La Reunion. As a “true exchange,” in June 2015 a group of Park Tudor students will travel to La Reunion, considered the “Hawaii of France” because of its extraordinary beaches, incredible scenery, and worldclass resort facilities. While in La Reunion, students will attend school and immerse themselves in the unique culture of the island, which offers an interesting mix of French, Asian and other cultures. The exchange program has been coordinated by Upper School World Language teachers Christian Jacobs and Clarice Doucette, both of whom have extensive experience with exchange programs. “One of Park Tudor’s core values is respect, which includes an appreciation of and respect for other cultures,” said Asso-

ciate Head of School for Academic Affairs Peter Kraft. “Exchange programs like this not only help our students develop a global perspective, but also provide students an extraordinary opportunity to make friends from the opposite side of the world.” Adds Christian Jacobs, “At Park Tudor we are fully committed to making language and cultural immersion a critical part of the World Languages program. The upcoming trip to La Reunion, which will also include a brief homestay in Paris, gives students the chance to experience not one, but two French-speaking opportunities in the same trip. I can’t imagine a richer experience for our students.”

Sophomore West Clark Awarded Nation’s Top Honor for Student Poets
Sophomore West Clark is one of five
members of the 2014 class of the National Student Poets Program (NSPP), the nation’s highest honor for teen poets presenting original work. The National Student Poets began their year of poetry events, workshops and service projects with a reading hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama in the Blue Room of the White House. These five outstanding young poets were appointed by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers to showcase the essential role of writing and the arts in academic and personal success. As a youth ambassador for poetry and the art of language, West, along with the other National Student Poets, will lead readings and workshops at libraries, museums and schools throughout the country, and participate in prestigious events such as readings at the Library of Congress and the U.S. Department of Education, and the Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival where they will present on a panel for educators.
In addition, the National Student Poets will implement community service projects in their respective regions, which in the past have reached diverse audiences such as military children, patients at a children’s hospital, nursing home residents with Alzheimer’s disease, and homeless youth, among others. During this year of service, they will also continue to develop their skills through workshops and conversations with the nation’s top writers and thinkers. West is currently working with the National Student Poets Program and Park Tudor to develop his community service project for the year. Each year, the program’s new class is selected from students in grades 9–11 who receive national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in poetry, the exclusive pathway to becoming a National Student Poet. All student works are then judged based on exceptional creativity, dedication to craft and promise by a jury of literary luminaries and leaders in education and the arts. The 2014 panel of NSPP jurors included Esther Belin (writer and artist), Robert Casper (Head of the Poetry and Literature Center, Library of Congress), Martin Jude Farawell (Director, Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Program), Andrea Gibson (poet), Terrance Hayes (poet), Juan Felipe Herrera (writer), Edward Hirsch (President, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation), Alice

Quinn (Executive Director, Poetry Society of America), Roger Reeves (poet) and Patricia Smith (poet). The National Student Poets will each receive an academic award of $5,000 funded by the Bernstein Family Foundation and will serve as resources for the Library of Congress and U.S. Department of Education. Upper School English teacher Laura Gellin was West’s instructor for English I Plus his freshman year, and worked with West to submit his winning entry to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. She praised West for his commitment to the hard work of the writing process. “West’s final draft of his winning poem was very different from where he started,” said Gellin. “West certainly has a natural gift for writing, but he is also constantly going back to his work and revising, rethinking word choice and imagery, getting feedback and trying again.” West acknowledges that the writing process isn’t always an easy one, and in fact he experienced a “dark period” of two years in Middle School where he wrote no poetry. He credits Middle School English teacher and English Department Chair Jane Sidey with getting him to write again. “We studied ‘The House on Mango Street,’ and Ms. Sidey had us write poems that related to the poetic chapters we were reading in the book,” said West. “Ms. Sidey gave me some positive feedback on the poems I submitted, and that inspired me to write more.” As a result of his honor, West has experienced some historic firsts. Not only was he the first teen to ever conduct a poetry reading in the White House, he was also the first teen to be listed in a book chronicling every poet to give a reading in the Library of Congress, alongside such luminaries as Robert Frost and Langston Hughes. “My trip to Washington, D.C. was a whirlwind of amazing events,” said West. “I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to spread the influence of poetry throughout the community, and make it more accessible. Poetry taps into human emotion in a way that connects us all.”

“Flames”
By Weston Clark Against my thighs, my hands throb like my father’s footsteps. Black smudges on my fingernails and a bubbling wound on my thumb betray my sinful revenge. My town is a Denny’s, a Shell, a hunting lodge carved into the side of a red cliff. In summer, at the lodge, the antlers mounted above the door frown like brows. My sister’s dollhouse is a spectacle of light, a half-inch of gasoline from the can in the garage, the scrape of the match-head who bites the flesh off my thumb, the heat of a bittersweet smell erupting into the air. Flames blossoming upon the tiny doors and windows (through which my sister’s dolls blankly stare) like unattended wisteria. When I show my sister the blackened dollhouse, she looks at me, and in silence she turns away, so that I must pick up the ruined toy and throw it in the rusty blue dumpster behind our house. Two summers past, the air was dwindling at the fair where the goldfish sat idly in their bowls. we were throwing balls to win a fish. I won, she cried. In the parking lot, I gave her the fish who swam in his bag like a tiny flame.

Park Tudor Builds a Home for Habitat for Humanity
Since 1999, the Park Tudor community
has committed our time, talent and treasure to supporting Habitat for Humanity. Every two years, students, parents, faculty and alumni come together to build a Habitat home; this year, Park Tudor volunteers spent a total of nine full days working at the build site. This year’s build will help transform a neighborhood, as seven other homes will be built in the area. For a Habitat for Humanity homeowner, purchasing their first home is a life-changing opportunity to own a simple, quality affordable home. The possibilities that will evolve from home ownership include less reliance on social services, improved mental health, and hope for academic success in children of families involved in the program. Habitat homes are affordable thanks to volunteerism, donations and contributions from the community at large. Selected Habitat homeowners pay a modest down payment, invest up to 300 hours of “sweat equity,” which includes construction of their home, and are responsible for monthly mortgage payments and home maintenance. Through the home ownership education program and financial counseling, Habitat homeowners are given the tools to be successful in this endeavor. The owners of this year’s Park Tudor house are the Jonathan Spears and Jessica Thompson family. With four young children, the family has long dreamed of owning a home with enough space for everyone to have their own room. Says Jessica, “Homeownership means a blessing, a sense of accomplishment, memories, a place of our own, an experience, a place for us to grow old and a place my children can always come to.” The build was led by students Roddy ’15 and Alex ’16 Bowlby, who raised more than $45,000 from generous donors who believed in the Habitat for Humanity cause and the importance of Park Tudor’s participation, with guidance and assistance from Director of Development Doug Allen and the Development Office. In Memoriam: Lower School Director Debbie Dominguez
The Park Tudor community was deeply
saddened by the passing of Lower School Director Debbie Dominguez on September 20, 2014. Debbie was passionate about Park Tudor, and had just begun her 24th year at the school. She was greatly admired for her tremendous wisdom, compassion, and capacity for love for her students and colleagues. Debbie graduated from Purdue University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education with a kindergarten endorsement, and also earned a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Administration from Jones International University in Colorado. She received a graduate endorsement in English as a Second Language from the University of Houston, and throughout her career continued to pursue extensive advanced academic training in gifted curriculum, math, language, and media. Debbie began her teaching career in Houston, Texas, and after moving back to Indianapolis in 1990 she taught for one year in the Indianapolis Public School district. In the fall of 1991, Debbie came to Park Tudor, and taught fourth grade for six years. In 1997, Debbie was named the first Director of the new Hilbert Early Education Center at Park Tudor, and eventually became Director of the Lower School. One passion of Debbie’s was international travel, and she worked tirelessly to develop opportunities for Park Tudor students to see the world and experience other cultures. She was an advocate for exchange programs and enthusiastically supported the partnership with the Scuola Italiana di Montevideo in Uruguay, hosting a group of students at Park Tudor each fall and, in turn, sending a group of fourth- and fifth-grade students from PT to Montevideo. She also led many groups of Park Tudor Lower School students on trips to Valladolid, Spain. Following is a tribute to Debbie sent by Giovanni Costanzelli, Board President, and Ana María Mendes, Director of Primary School from the Scuolo Italiana di Montevideo:
“Debbie was the consummate educator and an excellent ambassador of your school in our country. Warm, with simple and sincere gestures, she earned our love and respect in addition to being the model of a tireless worker. From the Scuola Italiana di Montevideo as an institution and from the hearts of all who had the pleasure to know and to work with her, we extend to each member of the Park Tudor community our deepest condolences. To your family we send a warm embrace as well as the assurance that she will live on in our memory as a great person and tireless professional educator.” Along with many tributes to Debbie from students and faculty at Park Tudor, Debbie’s family and friends came together for a Celebration of Life held at the school on Saturday, September 27. Attendees included her husband, Bob Dominquez; children Erin, Katie Scheidler, Bailey ’13 and
Antonio ’18; son-in-law, James Scheidler; as well as her mother, Donna O’Donnell, brother, Kevin O’Donnell and many other relatives in her extended family.

Park Tudor defeated University in the opening game of the state tournament, thus advancing to play another top-ranked team – Guerin Catholic, to whom they lost, 4-1, in the sectional title game. VOLLEYBALL The lady netters had a stellar season that included some signature wins over the likes of Heritage Christian, North Central, Connersville, Fishers and Western Boone. Park Tudor won their own invitational early in the season, defeating Warren Central, Pendleton Heights and Lawrence Central in the process. Coach Tim Hardt and the Panthers advanced their way up the state rankings where they found themselves ranked as high as No. 2 in the 2A state polls. Park Tudor remained in the top 10 in the rankings all season long. The team drew Broad Ripple in the opening game of sectional play and advanced to a rematch with eventual sectional champion Heritage Christian in the Shortridge Sectional, falling to the Eagles in five sets. The girls entered state tournament play with an impressive 19-4 record. FOOTBALL The Panthers owned a 1-7 record heading in to the final regular season game with Cardinal Ritter. Park Tudor’s lone win
came on the road against South Decatur where the Panthers defeated them 28-7. Though the win-loss record may not reflect it, the football team has shown great improvement from the previous year and over the course of this season. In three of their losses the boys of the gridiron scored 30 points or more. Four of their opponents were ranked in the top 10 in the state 2A football poll. The coaches have implemented a nice mix of running and passing in the offense with improved play at the defensive end. Park Tudor defeated Cloverdale on the road in the sectional opener, but lost to Ritter to end the season. CROSS COUNTRY The girls cross country team won the school’s third conference championship with Jessica Palmer finishing second in the meet. Courtney Lynn and Emily Neher joined her on the All-Conference team. The boys finished fourth in the conference meet. First-year coach Garrett Lawton welcomed 29 runners the first week of August and managed to mold them into two very competitive teams. The teams traveled every weekend to the likes of Terre Haute, Danville, Culver and Shelbyville to compete against some of the best teams in the state. Park Tudor was invited to run in the prestigious FlashRock Invitational hosted by Westfield and Franklin Central where there were close to 1,000 competitors. An

Oarsmen Luke Elliott and Alec Stanley captured gold medals, and Adam Roesner, Alex Bowlby and Roddy Bowlby earned silvers. At the Frogtown Regatta in Toledo, Ohio, the Panthers battled 32 teams from five states over a three-mile course on the Maumee River. For the men, Luke, Alec, Adam, Alex and Roddy all captured silver on their men’s varsity 4 boats, and all participated in the men’s varsity 8 boat that took 5th. October’s Charlie Doyle Memorial Regatta in Dayton, Ohio brought PT women to the podium; Annabella Helman stroked the women’s JV 4+ to a gold medal with fellow crew members Cameron Sumner and Maya Mishra onboard. At the Head of the Eagle, PT rowers took gold in the women’s novice 8, men’s novice 4, and men’s varsity 4 and 8. Alex and Roddy Bowlby competed in the US Rowing Youth National Championships in Sacramento, California over the summer, taking 6th in the men’s pair.

Annual Giving to the School 2013-2014 Fall 2014 Park Tudor School
Dear Park Tudor Friends, Taking a moment to reflect and celebrate the achievements, specifically those made possible by the generosity of our donors, from the prior school year is gratifying. Your support helped us begin this current school year with energy and optimism. Thank you for your commitment to the school – because of your past support, we continue to build from our mission and core values. Over the past year, you all have risen to many occasions – whether it was providing additional support for an athletic team or fine arts group, volunteering in a classroom or participating in the Annual Fund, we have counted on you. The Park Tudor Annual Fund is a critical component of the school’s financial model, and your support of the Annual Fund demonstrates your understanding of and commitment to our shared mission. Highlights for the 2013-14 school year include: more than $1.2 million dollars raised; gifts from 80 percent of our current families; steady growth from our alumni body; and wholehearted commitment from faculty and board, at 100 percent participation. This support has a deep history at Park Tudor, and it is affirming to see how donors recognize and celebrate our commitment to excellence. I encourage you to read through this Annual Report, where you will find the names of more than 1,400 Park Tudor parents, alumni, faculty, grandparents and friends of the school who proudly supported the school through the Annual Fund, Endowment or other special projects in the 2013-14 year. These gifts, combined, total more than $2 million dollars. I would be remiss if I did not also express gratitude for the critical role many of you have played as volunteers at the school—you have given countless hours of time and energy to our school and our students. We are very fortunate for this support and the work that our volunteers accomplish every day. I look forward to your continued strong support in the future, and thank you for all you do for Park Tudor School.
How To Make a Gift to Park Tudor’s Annual Fund Outright Gift Gifts may be made by credit card or check, made payable to Park Tudor School. You may mail your gift in a pledge/gift envelope or visit www.parktudor.org/giveonline to make a secure online donation. Pledge Pledge your gift to the Annual Fund with a gift/pledge envelope indicating the amount of your contribution and make payments that are convenient for you. Whether you wish to make monthly payments or one payment at a later date, all pledges must be fulfilled by the end of our fiscal year, June 30. Securities You can make your Annual Fund donation with a gift of stock. A gift of appreciated securities may allow you to avoid capital gains on the increased value of the stock as well as a charitable deduction for the full market value when the gift is made. Check with your financial advisor for more details. Please contact the Development Office for assistance in this process. Memorial and Honorarium Gifts Your gift may be made in memory or in honor of a colleague, student, teacher, classmate or family member who is special to you. Please include this information in the appropriate area on the gift/pledge envelope or the notes section of the online donation form. The Development Office will notify the individual(s) or family of your tribute.
Sincerely,
Matthew D. Miller Head of School Each year, Park Tudor School offers a variety of opportunities to support the school, both financially and through in-kind donations. Listed in these pages are the names of those who have made donations to one or more of the following: Annual Fund, capital campaign, endowed funds, estate gifts realized and restricted funds. We extend a warm thank you for their commitment to our students and our school.

Ali Dakich ’12 Spends Summer on the Edge of War A
summer that started out as an internship with a venture capital firm in Tel Aviv, Israel, quickly turned into a much different experience once the deadly clashes between Hamas and Israel began in July. Ali Dakich ’12, currently a junior studying economy, history and world politics at Vanderbilt University, was one of 39 students from across the United States selected to participate in a summer internship program in Israel, sponsored by the Birthright Foundation. Birthright is an organization focused on providing opportunities for Jewish students to travel to Israel. After an extensive interview process, Ali was selected from more than 2,000 applicants and placed with a venture capital firm focused on investing in technology companies. Ali arrived in Israel on June 1, and quickly settled into a routine of learning her way around Tel Aviv, attending lectures and focusing on learning the venture capital business and meeting work deadlines. Five weeks later, all of that changed when Hamas started firing missiles at Tel Aviv. “Things really changed with the kidnapping of three Israeli hitchhikers in the West Bank, especially after the news came out that they had been killed,” said Dakich. Still, many people assured Dakich that Tel Aviv was unlikely to be targeted by Hamas missiles. “I attended a lecture where the speaker told us that Hamas was too disorganized to be able to fire missiles that could reach Tel Aviv. Twenty minutes later, the sirens went off and we had to immediately go to bomb shelters.”
32
By Cathy Yingling Chapelle ’87 After that, Ali’s daily routine included two to three bomb shelter visits per day with her co-workers, whenever sirens would go off. In Tel Aviv, when the sirens sounded Ali knew she had one minute and 40 seconds to get to a shelter. In the southern part of Israel, residents have only 15 seconds to seek shelter. While it was disconcerting at first, Ali says that she eventually became used to the sound of missiles being intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome defense system. The Iron Dome anticipates where missiles will hit and deflects them, creating a boom in the process. “I never felt that I was really in danger, because of the sophistication of Israel’s defense system. But, it did start to hit home when I would see my Israeli peers being called away to join the military reserves. Israel’s population is small, so everyone there knows someone who has been affected by the conflict.” Ali never considered leaving Israel early and coming home, and neither did any of the other students in her program. When concerned parents began contacting the head of the program, Ali assisted him with keeping parents informed of what was happening in Tel Aviv, and what steps the program was taking to help keep the students safe. “We all stopped taking buses, which were considered potential missile targets, and started taking cabs instead, paid for by the program. We established a ‘red line’ – if there were on-the-ground terrorist attacks by Hamas in Tel Aviv, we would go home. Fortunately, that never happened.”

Ali Dakich touring Jerusalem.
Ali says that her experience as a student at Park Tudor helped prepare her to handle her experience in Israel, both from a professional standpoint with her duties at her internship as well as personally navigating the challenge of living in a war zone. “I became much more attuned to world politics and the complexities of the Middle East from some of the courses I took at Park Tudor, and being a Global Scholar helped me learn research skills, how to work with a mentor, and how to manage my time and balance a rigorous schedule.” Despite the disruption of the attacks, Ali managed to accomplish significant work during her internship. As part of a group pro-social venture project, Ali developed a strategy to integrate technology start-ups and venture capital firms with UNICEF. She coordinated with UNICEF locally in Israel, and began to identify ways that various technology companies (a 3-D printing company, for example) might be able to help the charitable organization. While her summer turned out to be very different from what she expected, Ali is grateful to have had this experience. “I grew so much. Professionally, this was my first full-time internship and first time working in an office environment. I also made so many new friends; I knew no one when I arrived and now I have a whole new network of friends and business contacts. In addition, I learned to form my own opinions on some important political
issues. In the U.S., the news we get is often very filtered. When you’re in the midst of a situation, you see it in a whole new way and understand the issues much more deeply.” Ali quickly moved on to her next – hopefully more peaceful – adventure. She is spending the fall semester of her junior year studying in Copenhagen. Ali feels certain that her experience in Israel will stay with her for the rest of her life. Every November, all of the alumni of the program gather in New York City for a reunion, offering an opportunity to network and keep in touch with the friends Ali made during her summer in the war zone.

Park Tudor Students Seek Scientific Solutions Imagine simply coughing into a specially treated cup to be tested
for a strep throat infection…being able to desalinate ocean water without the use of expensive fossil fuels…repairing a mutated gene to treat Alzheimer’s disease…calculating breast cancer risk based on genetic codes…or using plants and symbiotic bacteria to produce renewable energy. For the six students participating in Park Tudor’s new LOGOS Science Research Program, these aren’t simply “what ifs,” but active projects being conducted with professional scientists that began last spring and will continue throughout the fall semester. Launched in the 2013/2014 school year, the LOGOS Science Research Program is a multi-year course of study for juniors with a keen interest in science who want to expand and hone their skills and knowledge, especially in qualitative and quantitative research. The coursework for LOGOS students includes a ½ credit course taken in the spring semester of their junior year, designed to enhance their knowledge of various research and experimentation techniques. During the fall semester of their senior year, LOGOS students’ class work focuses on writing and presenting their research projects. The cornerstone of the LOGOS program happens over the summer between junior and senior year, when students commit to spending at least 150 hours working with the assistance of a Principal Investigator on conducting the necessary research to complete their projects. In most cases, this work happens in a professional

lab or university setting. “The LOGOS program is designed for students who think they would like to pursue a career in STEM (science, technology, engineering or math),” said Dr. Scott McDougall, chair of Park Tudor’s science department. “It’s an opportunity for them to experience what it’s like to work alongside professional researchers on a daily basis.” A Less-Intrusive Test for Strep Each year, nearly 11 million people contract an infection from the Group A Streptococcus bacteria. Streptococcal pharyngitis, or more colloquially known as strep-throat, can lead to multiple fatal diseases including rheumatic fever, scarlet fever, and kidney inflammation. For Alex Kortepter, the current throat-swab method of testing for strep falls short; it can cause gagging or even vomiting for patients, and is especially difficult to administer to young children. Alex spent a portion of his summer working on a novel test for strep, where patients would cough into a cup treated with special chemicals that change color when exposed to streptococcal bacteria. Alex is eager to continue his research this semester in a clinical environment. “Because we had no access to strep patients– and certainly didn’t want to infect ourselves – our early tests were inconclusive,” said Alex. “My mentor, Dr. Alfredo Lopez, is going to give me access to his medical facility to try the new test on patients, which should yield more accurate results.”

Using Plants and Bacteria to Generate Energy The race to identify cleaner and more sustainable forms of energy is well underway. But Park Tudor students Phillip Barnhard and Annie Ullyot have noted that most current sources of renewable energy have a major limiting factor: cost. Phillip and Annie spent their summer exploring the possibility of extracting energy from plants and symbiotic bacteria, using an apparatus similar to a fuel-cell. Currently, this method of harvesting energy, known as “biophotovoltaics” has its own drawback: current models do not produce enough electricity to make it worthwhile. Phillip and Annie hypothesized that the amount of electricity produced through biophotovoltaics could potentially be greatly increased through the use of genetic modification of the plants and bacteria, and optimization of the details of the fuel cell apparatus. Annie developed the initial concept for this research project, and partnered with Phillip and two other Indianapolis-area high school students to help make it a reality. For Annie, working in the lab at IUPUI was an eye-opening experience. “Working in that environment really made me understand how a lab works outside of high school,” said Annie. “We learned the basics about lab processes as part of the LOGOS course, and then I was able to apply that in a more advanced lab setting at IUPUI.” Phillip’s summer also included a trip to Mexico for more scientific research. Phillip spent two weeks in the Yucatan exploring reef systems, fish populations and algae growth. During a series of SCUBA dives, Phillip took hundreds of incremental photographs of a coral reef. He is currently analyzing the photos to identify algae growth and attempt to determine how that correlates to invasive species on the reef. “Analyzing the reef through my photos is challenging, because I have to constantly think about all of the potential interactions and account for variables,” said Phillip. A More Efficient Method of Desalinization In addition to his work on the new strep test, Alex Kortepeter has also teamed with Zac Li in an attempt to help solve one of the world’s greatest problems – the lack of sufficient potable water. With many areas of the United States experiencing drastic droughts and resorting to water rationing and usage reduction, their research could have implications close to home. Zac and Alex are pursuing a better method of desalinating ocean water, which has historically been an expensive and inefficient proposition. By using solar thermal energy to power a dual process of water desalination and steam turbine energy already in use, they believe it could be possible to extract fresh water and provide renewable energy, helping to alleviate the world’s fresh water shortage and decreasing the overall carbon footprint. Zac and Alex created an early prototype over the summer of a device that would test this concept, but were limited by the materials they could purchase at their local home supply store. “Our initial prototype succeeded in powering a turbine, but ultimately couldn’t stand up to the high heat of solar energy,” said Zac. Now, the team is working with a supplier to secure solar tubes to use in a more advanced prototype. “Our hope is that we can use a solar tube to power a lightbulb while generating steam power.” Zac and Alex have been awarded a $1500 grant from the Young IQ program at IUPUI to continue their research.

Mending Mitochondria Michaela Tinkey’s summer in the research lab was spent exploring the possibility of repairing mutations in a specific gene – the COX 2 gene – in neuronal mitochondria. Mutations naturally occur in this gene as people age, and it has been linked to a cognitive decline in mammals. Michaela hypothesized that it is possible to use a specific process, known as electroporation, to replace a nonfunctional copy of the COX 2 gene with a functional copy. While this research is just exploratory at this point, if it is indeed possible to repair the COX 2 gene, there could be applications in treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, as well as several degenerative diseases of the optic nerve. For Michaela, understanding the brain helps her to pursue another passion – creative writing. “I’m fascinated by human behavior and why we see the world the way we do,” said Michaela. “To develop characters you need to understand how people work, which is all tied to brain function.” Michaela has also received a $1500 grant from Young IQ for further research in this area. Understanding Links Between Genetic Code and Breast Cancer Scott Thygesen has been working with Dr. Chunyan He, an assistant professor of epidemiology in the Fairbanks School of Public Health at IU Simon Cancer Center. Dr. He’s research focuses on breast cancer and its genetic risk factors, as well as how these genetic variants interact with environmental and lifestyle factors. As part of a collaboration with the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Dr. He has access to data sets including genetic data from both healthy and breast cancer tissues; Scott worked with Dr. He to use a specific coding program to perform detailed statistical analysis of these data sets. As his work with Dr. He continues in the coming months, Scott will use some of this data to locate and understand potential links between genetic code and breast cancer risk. Scott was surprised at the amount of high-level work he was able to accomplish in Dr. He’s lab. “I was expecting to be mostly staining slides and transporting them, and that was part of what I did, but I also got to do microdissection, where I used a computer to dissect parts of breast tissue,” said Scott. “I was able to work on the actual samples that Dr. He’s lab provides to the Komen Tissue Bank.”

P
hil G.D. Schaefer ’76 is a Park School legacy: his dad, Norb “Bud” Schaefer graduated in 1948. Phil attended lower and middle school at Park / Park Tudor from 1967 to 1973 before moving to Florida to finish his secondary education at Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale. He received his Master’s in Architecture from Tulane and both an MBA and Master’s in Urban Planning from the University of Virginia. As an architect, Phil knows the value of a strong foundation, and as a tree hugger/planter, he knows the value of planting for the future even when you might not be around to see the results. Thus Phil wanted to “pay back” Park Tudor by including the school in his will. Becoming a member of the Endowment Society was a way for Phil to say thank you to the school for planting and nurturing his early development through the individualized attention and continual challenges that his teachers gave him. Without that, he believes he would not have been as successful in his life. Anyone can become a member of the Endowment Society. There are many ways to tailor a planned gift to best suit you and the school.
