DOING ALL WE CAN AROUND THE COVID RESTRICTIONS

The last 6 months has shown us that staying connected with one another through practical,

months, you should expect some changes. These will be one way systems, limits on numbers

restrictions mean that some of the ways we have developed together to share ideas, build

and cleaning spaces after use. We will also be introducing a new online booking system to

useful participation has never been more important. It’s also never been more difficult! Social projects and change neighbourhoods are no longer possible. We all have a responsibility to

keep one another safe, and do whatever we can to minimise the chances of people getting sick. But not everything has to stop! It is possible to create, build, and share in Covid-secure ways!

We have thought long and hard about what it will take to make our spaces and resources

available to as many residents as possible, for as much time as possible whilst ensuring that safety is a priority.

Right from the beginning we have ensured that the basics are in place, from hand sanitiser

to face masks and gloves. We added to these with some new processes and procedures. This means that when you come to an Every One Every Day space in the coming weeks and

in spaces to allow for social distancing, and greater collective expectations around hygiene allow residents to access activities and help us to manage numbers at safe levels.

Of course there are many uncertainties about what will and will not be possible as the situation with the virus and the guidance changes. Some of this may affect the exciting plans contained in this newspaper. To help you work out what will definitely go ahead and what may be subject

to change we have coded each activity throughout the paper so that it is clear whether it will

happen whatever social restrictions are in place (because it is digital or home based) or whether it may be subject to change. Overall, please make sure to keep a close eye on our website and

events pages for regular updates and of course you can always pick up the phone to speak to one of the team!

REWILDING Within the next 10 years, to reverse the effects of climate change, we must reduce waste, reduce carbon emissions and protect & restore natural environments. Together with local people, organisations, schools and businesses we will be using our skills and imaginations to contribute to the solution by allowing nature back onto our streets, around our homes, flourish in our parks and across our open spaces.

100% HOME Can be adapted to go ahead during all types of Covid restrictions.

Conserving existing wild spaces is essential, so that birds, bees, bugs and small wildlife can be restored. The result: rekindling a sense of wonder and rediscovering our relationship with the wild.

Adopt a Tree Want to plant your own tree? We can supply you with trees that are free to take, with no limit on how many. We will help you map out your space, choose your species and develop a care plan. If you find that your desired tree is not available, you are able to request your specific tree and reserve it. TREES THAT ARE AVAILABLE: Hawthorn, Rowan, Blackthorn, Silver Birch, Hazel, Common Oak and various fruit trees on request. To adopt a tree, it’s really quite simple, go to this web link and tell us a bit more about the space you have in mind and you will have a list of trees that will be perfectly suited to your space: bit.ly/adopttrees2020

WA X : W O R K S 36

WAX:WORKS IS A COLLABORATION BETWEEN WAX ATELIER, EVERY ONE EVERY DAY AND THE MAKERS OF BARKING AND DAGENHAM. WAX Atelier and Every One Every Day have teamed up to work with local

residents in Barking and Dagenham to create a unique makers collective. Following a five week programme of learning, the Wax:Works makers are now producing beautiful candles and sustainable food coverings out of natural materials.

The aim is to establish a co-operative business in the borough that is

owned by the makers and provides flexible, living wage income for local residents. Find out more at www.weareeveryone.org/wax-works.

“We are working on a new way of forming businesses and collectives. Rather than sending a CV, having an interview and receiving a Yes or No, we are working together and experiencing each other’s company. So whether we do go through to the next stage or not, we are taking away skills. Rather than gaining nothing, we’re gaining something.” Anyone in the Borough was able to sign up to the Wax:Works programme, and it started with a discovery phase in which 30 local residents experienced the making of food wraps and candles in two taster workshops.

This was followed by a two-week long intensive learning phase to explore skills, teamwork and production processes.

The group is now entering the final earning phase to fulfill orders together

with Wax Atelier. Following this prototype period, the collective hopes to continue as a sustainable co-operative business.
