100s of people are working together on wonderful neighbourhood projects in Barking and Dagenham. What would you like to do? AUTUMN PROGRAMME 2018 1

WELCOME TO EVERY ONE EVERY DAY What a totally amazing year we’ve had together! More than 2,000 people have come out to practical creative events across the borough over the last few months, working with the Every One Every Day team to start more than 70 exciting projects — nearly double what anyone could have expected — Barking and Dagenham is a really special place! People across the borough are working together every single day of the week, pouring their creativity and energy into these projects, ranging from cooking, making, sewing, playing, growing, sharing, composting, film, writing … and all the while chatting with new friends and drinking thousands of cups of tea! Our wonderful Autumn Programme starts on the 16 October, with incredible opportunities for residents to meet their neighbours, and do enjoyable and useful activities together.

Ever dreamed of having your own sho p? You can now! We will be running a new Retail Collaborative Business Incubator over the next three months called ‘Design Make Sell’. Anyone with an idea of something they would like to make and sell, and we mean anyone, will be able to take part and test trade in a fantastic new concept shop in our Barking shop on Ripple Road in December. There will be a Pop Up Micro Factory, full of specialists and equipment, close to Becontree Station, for you to make your products in preparation for selling in the Barking shop.

“On a day-to-day basis in the shop I’m seeing older people, people with disabilities, children, different cultures and people from different backgrounds being all together, getting along, and happy” - Local resident.

“Every One Every Day has changed my life. I am really excited to see where this leads” - Local resident.

Don’t waste a second in taking this exciting opportunity…apply on the ‘Design Make Sell’ webpage.

“Every One Every Day is bringing the community together for projects that are going to change our borough for the better.

Ever wished there was an Every One Every Day shop near you? There is now … if you live near Porter’s Avenue! We are opening our third shop in November! Hugely excited to have secured a shop in Martin’s Corner. We have been working with lots of residents in and around the area, and have some brilliant relationships with organisations locally. We can’t wait to get started! Please keep an eye on the website for more information on the launch festival!

You can’t help but get totally immersed in everything and you’ll get to create something truly amazing that makes you feel amazing too!” - Local resident.

Bright and refreshing projects for everyone” Local resident.

T H E WAREHOU SE Imagine becoming part of an enterprising community developing ideas and businesses in Barking and Dagenham, based in a new warehouse space built exclusively for residents with open access. We’re building a makerspace for the borough, a place where residents can come to make things together - new products, items that will help improve the borough, or just work informally and learn new skills. What is a makerspace? It’s a new type of workspace with lots of exciting equipment. The Warehouse will have different types of spaces and machinery, for wood and metal work, for digital, fashion and fabrics, for cooking in an industrial kitchen, and co-working and event spaces.

Build update We expect to start building the Warehouse in 2019. Until then, we’ve secured a pop-up micro factory space in Becontree that we will use for our Retail Collaborative Business Incubator this autumn. The Pop-Up Micro Factory will feature several machines that residents can use to make handy household items which they can test trade in our shop on Ripple Road which, for the first two weeks in December will be converted into a pop-up retail space!

Open access There will be no costs for using the space. Residents that love using The Warehouse will be part of maintaining the spaces and develop skills within the community.

A WONDERFUL PLACE TO GROW UP 30

There are lots of different things that make somewhere a great place to grow up: outdoor spaces, friends who live nearby, a playground within walking distance, welcoming and fun spaces to meet family and neighbours, and opportunities to play or develop your ideas. Barking and Dagenham is full of young families and beautiful green spaces for children to play in. During the last 6 months, since opening the Every One Every Day shops, we have met lots of families excited to explore new projects in the borough together including a number of parents interested in learning more about alternative ways to care for and help children learn. These conversations have so far led to projects such as Story Box and Play Streets happening around the borough and conversations of parent-led nurseries, outdoor learning experiences, alternative education (such as home-schooling) as well as many other ideas about how to make the borough a better place to grow up. Here we share a range of projects and sessions created especially for families.

Barking and Dagenham has more green spaces than any borough in London. Along with the beautiful parks, the borough also has thousands of smaller pockets of green spaces.Residents would love to see some of these green spaces brought to life with new ideas, transforming them into useful spaces for growing, learning and playing. How does Open Corners work? It couldn’t be easier. The Every One Every Day team will support residents to bring their ideas to life as quickly and as easily as possible. 1. You and another neighbour get together and decide you would like to start a project nearby. 2. You contact the Every One Every Day team, by phone, email, by completing the form online, or by popping into your nearest shop. 3. Working with the team the process involves: •

A site visit to the space you have in mind.

Some checks will be made with the council about the space.

The Every One Every Day team supports you talking about your ideas to your neighbourhoods, helping to arrange a design session using some of the items on the next page.

Once an outline design has been put together the Every One Every Day team will help share these ideas with the wider group of residents to ensure that everyone is happy, and to gather further support for keeping your space tidy and clean.

BARKING LEARNING CENTRE

GREEN LANE

DAGENHAM LIBRARY

A developing green space that currently has a willow dome for kids, a shed that will soon become a book swap and plenty of space for ideas like a community vegetable patch to come to life.

At the Barking Learning Centre residents took over a small garden. Local residents built planters for growing herbs, local children painted bird boxes.

What was once a patch of grass on the corner has been now transformed into a community garden complete with a planter full of herbs, noughts and crosses and fragrant flowers to brighten the area.

A secret space right at the back of the library where there are now pumpkins and plants growing. It’s a perfect place for story times and lunches in warm weather.

Join in and transform the green spaces on St. Awdrys Road At the end of St Awdrys road there are two green spaces that are not being used. Do you want to help transform them? Local residents, who want to create a little urban oasis, are getting together to plan changes to the two green areas. They will be creating a walkway for residents to access the garden space. They also want to construct bug hotels, make bird feeders, put up lights in the trees, and make it more inviting to all residents. Carole and Tim, who live on St Awdrys, got a Play Street up and running so they could meet their neighbours. Since then, they’ve been planning their next project together, with a number of their neighbours who have become involved. They’re all eager to make their street an even better place to live. If you’ve got ideas and want to get involved, look out for the making and mending workshops focussing in the St Awdrys area. You could even start a similar project on your street. We’ve planned some making days with the residents, where they’ll be making bird feeders, bug hotels, and a banner for St Awdrys.

Tuesday 16 October, 5:00 - 7:00pm St Awdrys Road, Barking, IG11 7QE

BOOK BOXES Would you like to see free books at the end of your street? Build a little library with Tim and Melissa, locals of Barking. Transform old wooden pallets into an outdoor bookshelf, that you can use to share books with friends and neighbours. The idea is that each time you take a book, you put one in that you’ve finished reading, creating a book exchange. I’m Melissa, I’m a mum of two. I enjoy taking part in many local community activities to get to know my neighbours. My name is Tim. I got together with my neighbours to start projects in the area, to make it a nicer place for my kids and others. We started with play streets, and now we’re building book boxes.
