SPRING PROGRAMME 26 FEBRUARY - 18 APRIL FESTIVAL 15 - 16 MARCH
BARKING AND DAGENHAM
Something amazing is happening in the heart of Barking and Dagenham. People from all backgrounds are spending time together, pouring their creativity, time and energy into making their neighbourhoods friendly, beautiful and productive. People are showing that the future is theirs to make, with their own two hands, and by working together with their neighbours. People are sharing their skills and ideas and making new friends. They are planting fruit trees and making it possible for children to play in their streets safely. They are making things last longer, reusing, repurposing and composting. They are sharing community meals, inventing new products and new livelihoods in collaborative teams. Through these collective practical actions people in Barking and Dagenham are bringing a sense of hope and optimism that has the attention of people all over the country and the world! We Make Our City programme is a celebration of this inspiring spirit. In the pages of this newspaper you will find 100 projects and 260 events that you can come along to this Spring - created by your neighbours. People living in this borough have huge talents, just like you, waiting to be shared through cooking, making, learning, planting, sharing, repairing, playing‌ We Make Our City Festival celebrates the launch of the borough’s public makerspace, The Warehouse in Thames Road, which will be filled with shared spaces, equipment and collaborative business programmes. It will have workshop spaces for designing and making new products, an industrial kitchen space for creating and testing new food businesses, and equipment for working with fabrics and making clothing. THE WAREHOusE Imagine becoming part of an enterprising community developing ideas and businesses in Barking and Dagenham, based in a new warehouse space created for residents with open access.
Imagine becoming part of an enterprising community developing ideas and businesses in Barking and Dagenham, based in a new warehouse space created for residents with open access. We have moved into a warehouse in Thames Road, Barking and are busy creating a new type of space in the borough. This will be a place where residents can come to make things together - new products for new collaborative businesses or just work informally and learn new skills. What is a makerspace? It’s a new type of workspace with lots of exciting equipment. The Warehouse will have different types of spaces and machinery, for wood work, digital design, fashion and fabrics, for cooking in an industrial kitchen, and co-working and event spaces. Open access There will be no costs for using the space for Barking and Dagenham residents. Members that love using The Warehouse will be part of looking after the spaces and equipment and sharing skills within the community. They will also be involved in organising how the spaces will be used, giving as much access to as many people as possible. Build update The plans have changed a little, with a build in Dagenham East delayed, so we will likely be working from 47 Thames Road for the rest of 2019.

A MAKERsPAcE FoR fAMiliEs Lots of residents have been asking and exploring what kind of environment would be needed to make it possible for families to come to The Warehouse to design, make and tinker together. Together we have co -designed an initial framework for the first 3 months to test how this might work in practice. We also wanted to keep in mind that people without children might need times when they can work without children in the building. A Family Making Day One day a week families will be welcome to attend and bring their children with them. Children will be their parents responsibility and will be allowed to accompany their parents throughout the space, except in areas with dangerous equipment. For the first three months this will be Tuesday 10am - 8pm. On the other days when the space is open children will still be welcome but will need to be looked after by a parent or other adult in the Imagination Space only.
OPEn HouRs FoR THE FiRST 3 MONTHs Open hours for the first 3 months We are busy creating spaces and equipping them for the opening We Make Our City Festival on the 16th March 2019. This will be the first official open day, but we want to invite people to help co-design the space and help ensure that the equip the space the best way we can with people who are going to use it. You are invited to Co-design Workshops on the following evenings: 1. 20 Feb 6pm - 8pm 47 Thames Road 2. 5 March 6pm - 8pm - 47 Thames Road
Mini-makers There will be a Mini-makers resource section in the Imagination Space where families will be able to use equipment designed for younger children e.g. sewing machines.
Launch We Make Our City Festival
Imagination Space and Collaborative Childcare It is planned that a space in the Warehouse will be created for younger members to play, create and make. This will also be a good place for parents to look after each others children to allow for bursts of concentrated work or for using more dangerous equipment.
16th March - Festival all day — see the following pages
Playleader Session There will be one four hour session per week with a playleader on Thursdays. This will enable families to engage fully with the Collaborative Business Programmes. Please see the website for times.

WELCOME TO EVER
2019 looks like it is going to be an incredible year! People across the borough are working together every single day of the week, pouring their creativity and energy into these projects, ranging from cooking, making, sewing, playing, growing, sharing, composting, film, writing... and all the while chatting with new friends and drinking thousands of cups of tea!
More than 4,000 people have come out to practical creative events across the borough over the last eighteen months, working with the Every One Every Day team to start more than 100 exciting projects! We will be opening The Warehouse in Thames Road in March, and two new shops, one in Marks Gate, the other in Thames over the next 12 months. The We Make Our City Spring Programme starts on the 26 February, with incredible opportunities for residents to meet their neighbours, and do enjoyable and useful activities together.
How does Every One Every Day work? Practical hands on ideas – not lots of meetings
Support for getting things going – no complicated processes
Every One Every Day builds on the ‘hands on ‘ projects that people have been creating over the last few years in their own neighbourhoods. These types of projects welcome people from all walks of life.
We welcome you to suggest ideas you would like to grow together with friends and neighbours. This project will give the support you need to bring you ideas to life quickly. The team will make things very simple - including:
These projects include: •
Find you useful spaces for the projects (kitchens, workshops storage spaces etc.)
•
Supplying materials and equipment for practical activities - no form filling for grants.
Batch cooking and community meals.
•
By arranging insurances and health and safety.
•
Food growing and tree planting.
•
Holding festivals, workshops and business programmes.
•
Trading, making and repairing.
•
Sharing skills, spaces and resources.
•
Families working and playing together.
•
Every One Every Day is going to be in the borough for a long time - at least 5 years and hopefully longer, and we hope to support residents to develop lots of projects and businesses.

“The reassurance that the Every One Every Day team will be working with me each step of the way has really encouraged me to try and start something new - its really built my confidence” - Local resident.

NATURE camp Welcome to Nature Camp: an exciting and eye opening two days of exploring the natural world through learning, tinkering and play. The two days will be spent getting creative with different ingredients in various ways to create beautiful, natural masterpieces. About the hosts: My name is Fran and I’m a Mum to two boys. I have recently become more interested in plants and nature and I’m keen to share this with other people and their families. My name is Catia and I home educate my three children. As part of our routine we enjoy being creative and active, so I want to show others how this can be done. My name is Yulia, I’m mum to a four year old and I studied psychology, which is an area I’m still developing in. Nature is a great way to connect the mind, body and soul and teaches us to be mindful in everyday life so I’d like to share this with fellow residents. Nature Painting Wednesday 10 April 11.00am - 12.00pm 47 Thames Rd Barking IG11 0HQ
If you love nature and want to brighten your neighbourhood, come and get messy making seed bombs using wildflower seeds, flour and water. Once the bombs have dried, they can be used to attract butterflies and beautify your garden or nearby unused green spaces.
Using all natural tools and ingredients such as pine cones, twigs and leaves, the aim of the game is to roll out a long strip of paper and paint a huge natural masterpiece. Or make lots of little ones! Who knows? Let’s get creative.
Play With Clay Thursday 11 April 10.00 - 11.00am 47 Thames Rd, Barking, IG11 0HQ
Seed Bombing on a Wild Walk Thursday 11 April 11.00am - 12.00pm 47 Thames Rd, Barking, IG11 0HQ
Clay is a natural resource which can be used in so many different ways. Come and have fun whilst being creative with this wonderful material and see what you can come up with.
Taking the seed bombs that we previously made, we will go on a Wild Walk armed with them and throw them wherever we spot an open, unused space. We’ll create beautiful flower patches as we go and these will attract lots of wildlife.

WONDERFUL PLACE There are lots of different things that make somewhere a great place to grow up; outdoor spaces, friends who live nearby, a playground within walking distance, welcoming and fun spaces to meet family and neighbours, and opportunities to play or develop your ideas. Barking and Dagenham is full of young families and beautiful green spaces for children to play in. We have three Every One Every Day shops in the borough where we have met lots of families excited to explore new projects in the borough together – including a number of parents interested in learning more about alternative ways to care for and help children learn.
These conversations have led to projects such as Story Box and Play Street happening around the borough and conversations of parentled nurseries, outdoor learning experiences, alternative education (such as homeschooling) as well as many other ideas about how to make the borough a better place to grow up. We would love to hear from you if this sounds like something you could be interested in. Pop in for a tea, or send over an email to akanele@weareeveryone.org.

1,000’s of people are working together on wonderful neighbourhood projects in Barking and Dagenham. What would you like to do? “Everyone, from every walk of like is being given a chance, not just to come and sit and watch, but to do something.” “People who have lived here for years and years, we’ve walked straight past each other - we never had a reason to talk.” “I can image a better place, and all it takes is communication and getting to know one another - for us to make it better.” “You feel kind of like ‘Wow! Life could be like this!’” Quotes from resident participants
