SUMMER PROGRAMME 55 RIPPLE ROAD EDITION

WELCOME TO EVER

2

2019 GETS BETTER AND BETTER! People across the borough are working together every single day of the week, pouring their creativity and energy into these projects, ranging from cooking, making, sewing, playing, growing, sharing, composting, film, writing... and all the while chatting with new friends and drinking thousands of cups of tea!

We have opened The Warehouse, a makerspace on Thames Road, which houses the newest Every One Every Day shop. The Warehouse is open to all residents of the borough, where you will be able to access a range of equipment to make and design whatever your imagination can come up with, for free!

More than 3,000 people have come to practical creative events across the borough over the last 18 months, working with the Every One Every Day team to start more than 100 exciting projects! How can you get involved?

There are so many projects to get involved with that have been co-created with residents, and we are sure you will be inspired by the range of ideas, as well as the energy being shown by the amazing people living and working in Barking and Dagenham.

How does Every One Every Day work? Practical hands on ideas – not lots of meetings

Support for getting things going – no complicated processes

Every One Every Day builds on the ‘hands on’ projects that people have been creating over the last few years in their own neighbourhoods. These types of projects welcome people from all walks of life.

We welcome you to suggest ideas you would like to grow together with friends and neighbours. This project will give the support you need to bring you ideas to life quickly.

These projects include: •

Sharing skills, spaces and resources.

Families working and playing together.

Batch cooking and community meals.

Food growing and tree planting.

Trading, making and repairing.

The team will make things very simple - including: •

Find you useful spaces for the projects (kitchens, workshops storage spaces etc.)

Supplying materials and equipment for practical activities - no form filling for grants.

By arranging insurances and health and safety.

Holding festivals, workshops and business programmes.

What is Every One Every Day is about?

We have four high street shops around the borough and one large public makerspace called The Warehouse in Thames.

People pop in to have a cup of tea and share their project or collaborative business idea, working with the design team to bring new ideas for the borough to life.

Over the last 18 months the project has grown a large enthusiastic network of over 3000 local people, who are doing practical things together to make everyday life better for everyone.

Many small things done by many people really add up, and really do make friendly, healthy and happy neighbourhoods.

Lots of wonderful things are being achieved by local people, families, friends and neighbours!

THE WAREHOUSE

8

Imagine becoming part of an enterprising community, developing ideas and businesses in Barking and Dagenham, based in a new warehouse space created for residents with open access.

We have moved into a warehouse on Thames Road in Barking and Dagenham and have been busy creating a new type of space in the borough. This will be a place where people can come to make things together, using the available materials and machines which you’ll learn how to operate - some people have already been creating new products for collaborative businesses and some have been coming to work informally and learn new skills. What is a makerspace? It’s a new type of workspace with lots of exciting equipment. The Warehouse will have different types of spaces and machinery, for wood work, digital design, fashion and fabrics, for cooking in an industrial kitchen, and co-working and event spaces.

Open access There will be no costs for using the space for Barking and Dagenham residents. Members that come to The Warehouse will be part of looking after the spaces and equipment and sharing skills within the community. They will also be involved in organising how the spaces will be used, giving as much access to as many people as possible. Build update Over the summer we will be complete a lot of the building work required. The new semi-industrial kitchen, event space, materials area and Mini-makers space will be completed. In the meantime we have functioning temporary spaces for all these making, cooking and working activities.

DREAM OF A NEW WAY OF MAKING A LIVING AND LOVE WORKING IN A TEAM? Every One Every Day Collaborative Business Programmes could be an ideal starting point for you! Many business development programmes have been designed to select and support people with a highly developed idea, and who will be in a position to dedicate all their waking hours to building and testing their new business. One of the main reasons for this is because when you are starting a business on your own this is what it takes to be successful.

The programmes have been shaped by talking and co-designing with local people to suit their aspirations and situations.

This approach creates opportunities for very few people, and Every One Every Day needed and wanted to do things very differently.

The Collaborative Business Programmes have been designed to enable as many people as possible in Barking and Dagenham to participate, while reducing significantly the amount of personal risk normally associated with starting new businesses. They are also designed to be creative, fun, and exciting!

Designed to be inclusive

Designed to reduce personal risk

No selection process

Based on collaborative teams

You don’t have to go through a selection process. If you are enthusiastic and agree to the time commitment, you are in!

Solo business start ups have a 50% failure rate after three years, while co-operative businesses have an 80% success rate after five years. Working with others as a team dramatically increases the chance of your business being successful, and is at the heart of how the Every One Every Day programmes are designed.

Starts where you are

Support from experts

You may already have the seeds of a product or service idea you want to bring into the programme. Or you might only know that you have the creativity to start one. Whatever your starting point the programmes are designed to support your personal journey, within a collaborative framework, towards starting your new business.

From early design and prototyping, to branding and promotions through to test trading, expert support is on hand to help you develop your ideas. The teams themselves include many experts too, and peer-to -peer learning is a vital part of the programmes. So come ready to share what you know with others!

Part-time and exible

Testing your ideas in the real world

The borough is full of young families, with parents who want to develop new business ideas, but who need to balance their family and work life. Many people have jobs that they need or want to keep doing alongside developing their new ideas. The programmes are designed to be as flexible as possible to enable you to work around your other commitments, with many opportunities on weekends and in the evenings.

Will people buy what you are creating? Only by prototyping and testing in the real world will you know for sure. The programmes encourage test trading in different markets, including online.

Low to no cost

Spaces, equipment and materials available

It can be expensive to design and develop a product or service idea and make enough inventory to go to market. By working in stages, providing small start-up loans, and buying in bulk, we can achieve lower go-to market costs.

The Warehouse in Thames Road, Barking, is the largest public makerspace in London. This makerspace is full of equipment that supports the business programmes including a fully equipped kitchen, sewing machines, ceramic equipment and kiln, digital manufacturing equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters and CNC machines. The possibilities are endless with this incredible resource!

COLLABORATIVE BUSINESS

CO-OP SCHOOL Have you ever wanted to open a business but don’t know where to begin? Do you enjoy working with others? Then Co-op School is for you! Join a 2-day training to help you start a business with others. What is a Co-op? A “co-op” or co-operative is a type of business that allows groups of people to share responsibilities as well as profits. Co-ops are owned and run by those who participate in them. There are over 7,000 co-ops in the UK, like architecture firms, bakeries, cafes and of course local shops on the high street. Why be a Co-op? Co-operatives reduce the risks associated with starting a business by allowing people to work together, sharing the tasks, workload, and the profit. This collaborative structure helps co-operatives to be far more successful than other business models because people can achieve more together than on their own. Co-operatives also enable communities to take ownership of assets and help spread wealth locally. How do I start? Co-op School will take place 11-12 July. Participants must join for both informative and fun days. There is no fee for participating but spaces are limited. If you’re looking for more collaborators, join our Collaborative Business programmes to meet others!

Day 1 : What is a Co-op and how does it work? Thursday 11 July | 10.00am - 4.00pm Learn all about co-operatives: what they are, how they work, and why they are successful. Hear from local co-operatives about how they share decision making and the running of their businesses. Develop your business idea and meet others who might be your future collaborators. Day 2 : How do we set up our Co-op? Friday 12 July | 10.00am - 4.00pm Build your business model and get started with the basics of setting up your business, including choosing a legal entity and how to incorporate. Learn about funding opportunities from organisations that support co-operatives. All sessions will take place at The Warehouse, 47 Thames Road, Barking IG11 0HQ. Lunch and light refreshments will be provided. Sessions will be led by experts from Co-operatives UK and Business Launchpad. Sign up online on Eventbrite at: bit.ly/2JYEb3f

OPEN CORNERS Barking and Dagenham has more green spaces than any borough in London. Along with the beautiful parks, the borough also has thousands of smaller pockets of green spaces. Residents would love to see some of these green spaces brought to life with new ideas, transforming them into useful spaces for growing, learning and playing. How does Open Corners work? It couldn’t be easier. The Every One Every Day team will support residents to bring their ideas to life as quickly and as easily as possible. 1. You and another neighbour get together and decide you would like to start a project nearby. 2. You contact the Every One Every Day team, by phone, email, by completing the form online or by popping into your nearest shop. 3. Working with the team the process involves: • A site visit to the space you have in mind. • Some checks will be made with the council about the space. • The Every One Every Day team supports you and helps you to arrange a design session to talk about your ideas to your neighbourhoods. • Once an outline design has been put together the Every One Every Day team will help share these ideas with the wider group of residents living nearby to invite them into the process to gather further support in transforming the space as well as keeping it tidy and clean for all to enjoy. Do you have a green space near you? Want to be involved in turning it into a lively social space in your neighbourhood? Email hello@weareeveryone.org to start the conversation.

Upney Meadow

Westbury Community Space

The Wild Garden

Just by Upney Station, Meadow Road has a patch of grass that is unused.

Have you seen Westbury Community Space recently? The green corner in Barking has transformed completely. It has become a community garden taking on a life of its own with people in the area using it on a daily basis and now it’s time for the next stage-come and get involved!

Junction of Essex Road and Ripple Road, IG11 7QL

My name is Martin and I’ve lived in Upney for the last 3 years. I have wanted to be involved in changing this green space as it’s close to where I live, and would like to take some action to renew our sense of pride in our local area. Together, we can create a place for planting, playing, sharing food and other gardening activities. The space can become somewhere that we all use everyday, that we can all enjoy and grow as a community.

Local residents Tim and Billy (as well as others) invite you to the sessions below. A great place to get involved and meet other local residents.

Rainwater catcher - build Saturday 29 June | 12.00 - 3.00pm Wedderburn Road, Barking, IG11 7XF (between Wedderburn Road and St Awdrys Road) Co-design Thursday 1 August | 6.00 - 8.00pm Eastbury Manor House, Barking, IG11 9SN Come along to this co-design session to share your ideas and be involved with the design of this green space. Have you ever built a rainwater catcher before? Want to learn how to make it with others? Come and join local residents in building one for this community green. The water collected can then be used on the green. Gardening and planter build Saturday 13 July | 12.00 - 3.00pm Wedderburn Road, Barking, IG11 7XF (between Wedderburn Road and St Awdrys Road) Could you help build a raised bed for planting? Do you want to grow herbs and other edible plants or learn how to do so? This will be a fun day outdoors, meeting others and transforming this green space by the flyover.

Karen and Paul have come across an underused open corner in Barking. On one side of the underpass, there is a green patch that is asking for some attention and would be a wonderful place for everyone to grow, play and socialise. There is a mural celebrating the borough’s history and now it’s time to continue transforming the space with the theme ‘Alice in Wonderland”.

Mad Hatters Co-design Thursday 4 July | 6.00 - 8.00pm 55 Ripple Road IG11 7NT Why not “Begin at the beginning” (as the king in Alice in Wonderland said) and take part in sharing ideas with others of how you would like to decorate the space to turn it into Barkings very own wonderland! The ideas can then be turned into reality with some hands on making which will then be placed on the green at the next session. Make your Wonderland Saturday 13 July |11.00am - 4.00pm Junction of Essex Road and Ripple Road, IG11 7QL Come and take part in decorating the green space using the ideas and things made from the co-design session. Are you handy with a drill, enjoy painting or want to bring some food to share with others? It will be a fun day for all ages to get involved with.

STREET

Would you like to live on a street where everyone has something to share and is open to lending each other hand? On an Open Street residents can set up a number of small projects on the same street, from chicken coops, to garden plots, to orchards or beehives. Would you and your neighbours be interested in setting up two or more projects from the list below?

Plant some fruit trees or bushes A couple of well cared for fruit trees can provide a community with plenty of fruit for a community’s juice, pie and snacks. Meet up with your neighbours and plant some for the years to come.

Keep bees Chicken coop Learn how to care for chickens at our Dagenham shop, build a coop and then keep chickens Honey bees have been kept in gardens for centuries. Practice skills you’ve learnt in Bee in your back garden. Swap your eggs for your neighbours’ produce, fruit or honey School and set up a hive at home. Swap your honey for neighbours’ produce, fruit or vegetables.
