THE BIG PICTURE

2020 BARKING AND DAGENHAM MADE BY EVERYONE FOR EVERYONE! SPRING PROGRAMME 2020 1

WELCOME!

The next big thing will be lots of small things

Hello and welcome to a very special edition of the Every One Every Day paper. Big picture, big ideas, big newspaper!

It’s the beginning of a new decade and we wanted to share with you the Big Picture of what has been happening in Barking and Dagenham over the last couple of years, through Every One Every Day. Residents have created an inspiring and exciting collection of 150 projects and ideas. They have brought these ideas to life together with the Every One Every Day team and in this edition we are pulling all of these ideas and activities into a single newspaper, rather than putting four individual papers highlighting activities around the shops. This paper shows you everything happening across the borough - and there is so much going on that we had to make a bigger paper!

Why is getting involved in neighbourhood projects so important?

Is Every One Every Day an unusual project?

We are experiencing a number of challenges, including climate change, political upheaval and conflict, rising inequality. Many of us feel anxious about the things happening around us yet they are too complex to solve as individuals. The easiest response is not to respond. We live next to homes just like ours, where our neighbours, full of talents and ideas, remain inactive, just like us. Not because we don’t want to act, but because we literally don’t know where to start.

There are around 270 species of bees in Britain and just under 250 of those are Wild Bees, also known as Solitary Bees. They don’t get a lot of attention because they don’t produce honey or wax but they are much more effective pollinators than honeybees. They don’t live in hives and instead build little homes using leaves, wood or holes in trees and buildings to lay their eggs. So, it’s important we create green spaces with lots of colourful wildflowers for them to collect nectar and pollen. The Wild Bee Homes project gives residents the opportunity to learn wood-working techniques whilst constructing hives using salvaged wood and digital making skills using machines like the Laser Cutter and CNC Machine. Turn to pages 12 - 13 to find out more.

Every One Every Day is a unique large-scale research project to see if it is possible to build practical participation into the fabric of everyday life. If we live differently, share more of our time, spaces, learning and ideas, then together can we can co-create the wonderful neighbourhoods we dream of to grow up in and grow old in? You have to build the projects, activities, relationships and networks in order to measure the impact of this much practical activity.

In the 26 months since Every One Every Day launched with it’s first shops in Ripple Road and Church Elm Lane the creativity and energy has been incredible. These two pages show some of the statistics from the project to give you a sense of the impact that 6,000+ people working together can create.

“My confidence was the major thing that I notice, my confidence and not being afraid to mix with people that don’t look like me, don’t cook like me, don’t speak the same language as me, don’t believe the same faith and breaking down those barriers and being able to communicate and get to know each other. I found that we didn’t even speak about our differences, the more we spoke, we kept meeting each other in the things that we were similar to. And as we go along, we’re realising that we’re meeting up back at the same place.” - Participant

You can collect a seed kit with a variety of wildflowers of your choice from anyone of the local Every One Every Day shops.

HOW DO WE NEED TO LIVE AND WORK DIFFERENTLY FOR THE NEXT DECADE?

PARTICIPATION CULTURE

PLANET POSITIVE

In a Participation Culture, people are at the centre of making their neighbourhoods exciting, inspiring, enjoyable and healthy places to live. People co-design every project and co-produce every outcome. These small practical inverventions lead to a wider sustainable community and the environment.

The planet is shared between all living beings. In today’s age, it is important to understand the responsibility of sharing the planet’s limited resources and environment with fellow living things and those who will inherit it in the future. Planet Positive means to work in a way that is least harmful to these resources and protects the environment. To be Planet Positive is to meet the needs of people today, without compromising future generations.

COLLABORATIVE Collaboration means anything that involves two or more people working together towards a shared goal. A neighbourhood where networks of people understand each other, look out for each other and respond to problems together, is known as Collaborative Culture. This helps in creating strong communities which are ready to face the problems of the coming decade. In a Collaborative Culture, people work through practical, social projects in a more equal way and take decisions together, keeping everyone’s views in mind.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY A traditional linear economy consists of take, make, use, dispose. This is harmful to the environment as it generate enormous waste. Circular Economy is an alternative to this system. In a Circular Economy, materials and products are reused, recycled, and upcycled. This helps in reduction of waste material and dependence on raw materials. It creates new economic opportunities and businesses and in turn, leads to huge benefits to the environment and society at large.

“EVERY ONE EVERY DAY IS BUILDING THE KIND OF NEIGHBOURHOODS EVERYONE IS GOING TO WANT TO LIVE IN IN THE FUTURE.” - ALEX RYAN, MARS SOLUTION LAB

16

INCLUSIVE In an inclusive system, no one or no particular group is left out or left behind. Participation opportunities can sometimes feel favoured towards confident and educated people or those that already know each other well. For a new system, it is important that opportunities are more welcoming and have no or very few barriers. Inclusivity benefits the whole neighbourhood and helps achieve common goals.

OPEN SOURCE Open Source means that the recipe for any given work is shared and free for anybody to use. Open Manufacturing is a new way of manufacturing where objects are produced in an open and collaborative manner based on the Open Source principles. The benefits of Open Source are that everybody has access to the source, everybody has opportunity to remix and redistribute, you don’t have to necessarily go back to vendor for getting things fixed. Being Open Source, sharing new ideas and increased cooperation leads to higher standards of manufacturing.

LEARN MAKE PRINCIPLES DESIGNED TO BE INCLUSIVE

NO SELECTION PROCESS You don’t have to go through a selection process. If you are enthusiastic and agree to the time commitment, you are in.

Part-time and flexible The programmes are designed to be as flexible as possible to enable you to work around your other commitments, with many opportunities on weekends and in the evenings.

STARTS WHERE YOU ARE You may already have a business, or you might just have a business idea. Whatever your starting point, the programmes are designed to support your personal journey.

I learned to grow things with my mum who does a lot of growing food. We would grow beetroot and potatoes when I was younger and then cook with them.

Connection and engagement with the natural world and the resources it provides is very important to me. I like to grow and forage the food I eat and also practice bushcraft, so learning about pottery is an extension of that desire to explore and experiment with natural materials.

I’ve been practicing my craft for 3 years, from designing, pattern cutting and sewing.I have also started my own unisex fashion label called Alantic Glo.

My father, a Ayurvedic medicine practitioner, taught me about the health benefits of spices and herbs.

I have a real appreciation for food, especially when you cook with it after all that effort! The hydroponics in the Warehouse has been really fun, we’ve been experimenting with beetroot, pineapple and other things. I think it’s really important to think about where our food comes from and now I really want to start hydroponics in my school!

20

Since becoming a member of the Slab Collective, I’ve learnt new skills and techniques of working with clay beyond the pottery wheel, such as building items by the coil or slab method and also experimented with glazing and decorating with slip. It’s been great getting to know the others, we’ve worked together to create bowls that were sold in Barking before Christmas.

I came to the Warehouse after a friend recommended it to me and have been coming back ever since. The atmosphere is friendly and thats why I come here rather than working from home. Today I have just finished my first ever cut and sewn sample piece in this space so I am really excited to build on this and learn more. That’s the thing about The Warehouse, there’s always someone to ask about the equipment or an idea that you are thinking about.

Two years ago I joined the food business programme ‘Pantry’ and with the help of food experts I developed my own curry paste and test traded it at market stalls in London. At The Warehouse I learnt all the practical business skills - from using an industrial kitchen to recipe making, jaring a product, testing its shelf life, costing and talking to customers. My curry paste is now sold at six waste-free shops across London and I’m about to start healthy cooking classes.

THE WAREHOUSE THE LARGEST PUBLIC MAKERSPACE IN THE UK The Warehouse is a place for everyone; one of the biggest shared workshops (also known as a makerspace or hackspace) of its kind in London, open exclusively for residents of Barking and Dagenham. This Spring there will be many programmed activities, training, business programmes, or you can simply pop in for a cup of relaxing tea and use the co-working space and the garden. If in doubt the best place to start is attending a warehouse memebership induction.

WHAT IS A MAKERSPACE? It’s a new type of workspace with lots of exciting equipment. The Warehouse has different types of spaces and machinery, for woodwork, digital design, fashion and fabrics, for cooking in an industrial kitchen, co-working and event spaces.

OPEN ACCESS There is no cost for using The Warehouse for Barking and Dagenham residents. Members that come to The Warehouse will be part of looking after the spaces, equipment and sharing skills within the community. Everyone gets involved in organising how the spaces will be used, giving as much access to as many people as possible. You’ll need to attend a Warehouse membership induction to use the space but all the amazing sessions in this paper are open to everyone.

BUILD UPDATE The Warehouse construction was completed at the end of the Summer Progamme and is now an active space for people to use. There are now many spaces including a fabric workshop, industrial kitchen and co-working areas. This has now been joined by a CNC machine room, digital making area, woodworking area, computer terminals, learning lab (event space), an apiary and a ceramics workshop area!

Are your little ones mini chefs in the making or would they like to be? Then Kiddies Cook sessions are the perfect place for them to learn! Join local mini residents as they share their favourite sweet treats in a fun environment. Feel free to bring lunch and eat together at the start of the session.

NICE CUPCAKES

Anyone can teach something they are skilled at including kids! Kids Trade School is an alternative, self organised school that runs on barter, where residents bring simple items requested by the hosts.

Teen Trade Schools are designed by teenagers to share skills with each other in exchange for simple barter items. Residents are encouraged to bring with them an item that contributes to the session.

If you are a kid, or know a kid who would like to share a skill in the next programme pop into on of the shops.

Anyone can teach anything, something they have skills in or are keen to explore - experience, practical skills and big ideas are valued equally.

SO WHAT AND WHO ARE PRECIOUS PLASTICS?

SO WHAT’S DIFFERENT AT THE WAREHOUSE?

Precious Plastics are a global community of 80,000 people! People who are connecting and creating new ways to recycle locally and to come up with exciting ways to reuse the unavoidable waste plastic.

The Warehouse is becoming a Precious Plastics Workshop… what does this mean? On Saturday 18 April there will be a big plastic shredder and other manufacturing machines to make new things from ground up plastic! This will then be set up in The Warehouse, which going forward will be a place where all the collected plastic can been shredded, stored and shaped into beautiful things, together.

There are people all over the planet making the machines that shred waste plastic, people collecting and sorting the waste plastic and people making beautiful things with waste plastic and creating a Precious Plastic Universe! Let’s join the lots of people doing little bits together in different areas, to make a big difference here in Barking & Dagenham.

SO HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED!t 1. Drop by to the shops or Warehouse with the plastic that you’ve saved from your bin.

Learn more about the project here: www.preciousplastic.com With the Every One Every Day Shops now set up as Precious Plastics Collection Points, you can be an important part of the story. Everyone is a recycler, so bring your waste plastic to the shop and watch an empty milk bottle be turned into a keyring, or an empty bleach bottle turned into a coaster! Everything that is collected will be stopped from going to landfill and can be recycled right in front of your eyes. Bring your empty bottles, CD’s, bottle lids, packaging and much more to see what we can make together in the shops. There are lots of different types of plastic, so there’s lots to learn about how to make things with waste things!
