Summer programme 55 ripple road

EVERY ONE. EVERY DAY. An 8 week season of over 160 opportunities near where you live to cook, make, learn, grow, fix, trade, sing, play, eat and share - together with your family, friends and neighbours. Barking and Dagenham made by everyone, for everyone!

SUMMER PROGRAMME 2018 1

Welcome to Every One Every Day! Every One Every Day is a really ambitious idea, with local residents at its heart. We know that Barking and Dagenham is a vibrant place to live and work, to grow up and grow older in. This project will make it easier to spend time with neighbours doing practical and useful everyday things together that we all enjoy. Practical ‘hands on’ ideas – not lots of meetings.

But we have hardly started yet!

Every One Every Day builds on the ‘hands on’ projects that people have been creating over the last few years in their own neighbourhoods. These types of projects welcome people from all walks of life.

We will be opening 2 new shops later this year - one in the Becontree/Valence area and another in Chadwell Heath. Our fifth shop is scheduled to open in Thames in Autumn 2019.

These projects include: •

Sharing skills, spaces and resources.

Families working and playing together.

Batch cooking and community meals.

Food growing and tree planting.

Trading, making and repairing.

“The reassurance that the Every One Every Day team will be working with me each step of the way has really encouraged me to try and start something new - it’s really built my confidence!” - Local resident.

Every One Every Day is going to be in the borough for a long time - at least 5 years and hopefully longer, and we hope to support residents to develop lots of projects and businesses.

AUTUMN 2018

Support for getting things going – no complicated processes. We welcome you to suggest ideas you would like to grow together with friends and neighbours. This project will give the support you need to bring your ideas to life quickly.

WAREHOUSE SPRING 2019

The team will make things very simple by: •

2

Finding you useful spaces for the projects (kitchens, workshops, storage spaces etc).

AUTUMN 2018

Supplying materials and equipment for practical activities - no form filling for grants.

Arranging insurance and health and safety.

Holding festivals, workshops and business programmes.

10 things you might not know

about Every One Every Day Local people are at the heart of everything.

We are going to be here for a long time.

People’s ideas and energies are the biggest asset in the borough - especially when we work together.

At least five years, and hopefully longer - with an aim of supporting hundreds of projects and business.

Ideas, skills and items are exchanged, never money.

We currently have two high street shops.

There is no financial cost for taking part in any of the Every One Every Day projects. However the project experiences all involve a sharing of ideas, friendship, skills and sometimes ingredients or barter items. The Every One Every Day team helps make that magic happen but we don’t deliver the activities as a service.

Our shops are the best places to find out what’s going on, tell us about ideas you have or activities you might want to take part in. We’re are really excited to be opening two more shops in 2018, and a further one in 2019.

Everything starts with a cup of tea.

People in Barking and Dagenham love bees and chickens!

You don’t have to have a big idea, loads of time or bags of confidence, we would just love to get to know you. Pop in for a cup of tea!

As a borough with many green spaces local people love to interact with nature. With training to become beekeepers to setting up bee hives to chicken projects and setting up coops!

Everything is practical, hands on and useful.

When we say everyone, we mean everyone.

Whether it’s cooking, making, growing or sewing together, the activities will directly benefit you, your neighbours, friends and family. These might include learning new things; saving you money or time; increasing confidence, happiness and health; making new friends and creating a greater sense of community; all the way through to developing ideas for new livelihoods and community businesses.

Everything is made as easy as possible. Being involved in making your neighbourhood a better place shouldn’t be a huge effort for a small number of individuals. We make it easy for everyone, working with people on an equal footing. All activities will be open, warm and welcoming to every single person in Barking and Dagenham.

Every One Every Day doesn’t give out grant funding.

A new free makerspace near Dagenham East.

We have small budgets for spaces, materials and equipment. It means you can test your idea out with other local people very quickly, without having to create new organisations from scratch.

Ideas, projects, businesses and people need space to grow and that’s why we’re building a makerspace in Dagenham East. Called The Warehouse, the facility will include flexible workshop spaces for metal, wood, digital, and fabric product creation.

Imagine becoming part of an enterprising community developing ideas and businesses in Barking and Dagenham, based in a new warehouse space built exclusively for residents with free access.

Are you working from home and need space to grow? Are you sitting at work right now and you’re finally ready to make that career change? You may have a hobby or side project that could become a full time job? Or maybe, there’s an idea you’ve always wanted to test out? The Every One Every Day initiative has secured £850,000 from the London Mayor’s Good Growth Fund. Together with grants from our other funders we are building a large ‘makerspace’ in Dagenham East which will have Open Access to Barking and Dagenham residents.

What is a makerspace? It’s a new type of workspace with lots of equipment. The Warehouse will operate much like a public library, giving residents of the borough the ability to work informally together, design and make new products, or make items that improve local neighbourhoods. The intention is that The Warehouse will have different types of workshops, for wood and metal work, for digital and fashion and fabrics. There will be an industrial kitchen for developing food businesses, and co-working and event spaces.

What do we mean by Open Access? There will be no costs for using the space. The Warehouse is an opportunity for sharing skills and ideas. Residents that love using The Warehouse will be part of maintaining the spaces and develop skills within the community.

What would you do if you had the space and resources... To start your business? To learn new skills and develop existing ones? To develop and test your product? To hold meetings, events and workshops? To join a network of people working on developing new ideas? 12

Come to this community Open Table Supper to swap ideas and experiences with other people living and working in Barking and Dagenham.

Join in with some fun and creative workshops to get a taster of the types of amazing resources you’ll be able to access in The Warehouse, coming to the borough in early 2019. At Maker Day you will be able to try a selection of the various maker techniques and creative machines, all shared with you by local creatives who are making right here in the borough.

This event will introduce you to other local business owners, freelancers, entrepreneurs and makers. Furthermore, you will get the chance to sign up for early membership to our new warehouse co-working space. Event sign-up essential, please visit weareeveryone.org to register in advance.

On the day you’ll have the chance to meet talented makers and you will have a chance to try out some different making processes. There really will be something for everyone: textiles, casting, leather-work, printing, ceramics and much more. We’ll even have a Mayku FormBox which is a table top vacuum former for small batch production. This will be a great opportunity if you love making but have never tried it, or if you’re making already and want to take the next step by connecting with other skilled makers and learning new skills.

There are lots of different things that make somewhere a great place to grow up: Outdoor spaces, friends who live nearby, a playground within walking distance, welcoming and fun spaces to meet family and neighbours, and opportunities to play or develop your ideas. Barking and Dagenham is full of young families and beautiful green spaces for children to play in. During the last 6 months, since opening the Every One Every Day shops, we have met lots of families excited to explore new projects in the borough together – including a number of parents interested in learning more about alternative ways to care for and help children learn. These conversations have so far led to projects such as Story Box and Play Streets happening around the borough and conversations of parent-led nurseries, outdoor learning experiences, alternative education (such as home-schooling) as well as many other ideas about how to make the borough a better place to grow up. This one-day workshop will explore different types of alternative child care and help you understand the potential for these types of models to be developed in the borough.

Have you always dreamed of taking your food products to market? Join our first food maker incubator programme in Barking and Dagenham.

Building on the interest and enthusiasm of residents who participated in our April 24th Food Day, we are creating a free programme to help residents join together to take their products to market through a collective brand. The idea is that by working together, as a collective, we can help reduce the risks faced by individual food businesses. The programme will feature both peer and expert mentorship that includes time with each resident to refine their existing recipes and/or new concepts, offering expert advice and feedback on taste, packaging, marketing, ingredients sourcing, and overall concept.

Did you know...? Barking and Dagenham has more green spaces than any borough in London! Along with beautiful parks, the borough also has thousands of smaller pockets of green space. Would you like to be able to set up a community book sharing project in a small greenhouse?

“I think that creating the space within your community where you can come and do something creative, where you can produce something with your two hands is very powerful.”

Join us this Summer and learn how to care for chickens! Check out our update on how local residents got on this Spring as they learnt to become beekeepers. Wide streets lined with tall trees and lavender shrubs, Barking and Dagenham is the greenest borough in London making it a haven for birds, insects and little creatures. The aim of these projects is to improve our environment and support residents as they connect with nature. We hope to fill our streets with the soft sounds of hens clucking and the rhythmic buzzing of bees as they fly from one Sunflower Street to the other. As well as connecting with nature these projects allow you to connect with your neighbours by sharing the eggs your hens have laid and learning how clever bees are from your local beekeeper. What we’ve found in this process is that chickens bring people together, just the mention of chickens gets everyone excited and reminds the of a trip to a farm as a child or a time when chickens were kept in gardens.

If you would like to add your chickens to the map, or have suggestions for naming our chickens please contact: saira@weareeveryone.org 30

You give us your food waste, we give you eggs A fantastic idea: Someone in your street keeps chickens in their back garden. Other residents on the street supply the chickens with suitable food waste in exchange for fresh eggs. Would you and your neighbours like to get together to create a Coop project on your street? The Every One Every Day team can help with gathering interest with your neighbours, as well as teaching you how to care for chickens and supplying some materials for hatching eggs! Drop into the shops or contact: hello@weareeveryone.org Did you know that some cities promote keeping chickens as part of their strategy to reduce landfill waste?

Chicken School We will soon have chickens in the Every One Every Day shop.

In our Spring Programme, locals attended a taster session, to experience the life of a beekeeper and had the amazing opportunity to see inside a beehive. They learnt to identify the difference between worker, drone and queen bees and really understand the commitment required to care for these important insects. Those who felt the calling of the bees moved onto the 5 week course located in Dagenham Starter Farm every Sunday. It’s been a wonderful and sunny time so far and the attendees have bonded over a desire to have a more positive impact on their area. No one has been stung and we’re learning that there’s nothing to be afraid of when it comes to bees - even in large numbers! We’re looking forward to hives opening up across the borough and having the opportunity to taste lovely, local honey!

“There’s something surreal about putting on your protective suit and inspecting the hive - it’s like being in a different world.”

Forget the goose that lays the golden egg, chickens are the gift that keeps on giving! Take part in Chicken School this summer and gain the skills needed to take care of chickens in your home - you’ll be collecting fresh eggs before you know it. It doesn’t stop there either, once you’ve learnt to take care of the Dagenham Shop chickens you’ll be ready to get some of your own. We’ll supply the hens (no cockerels so you’ll still need your alarm clock) and Coop for them to live in as well as supporting you to let your neighbours know you have chickens and the kind of food waste they can give you in exchange for eggs! So, if you’re interested in starting your own Coop book a place on our Chicken School course today!

Play Streets are springing up across the borough! Since launching in November two Play Streets have already started, with several more being planned. Would you and other families near you like to start a regular Play Street? What is a Play Street? Play Streets temporarily stop traffic in a residential street, cul -de-sac or square, creating an opportunity for children to play safely outside. Parents and neighbours host sessions by closing the street and bringing out toys and play equipment to share. By temporarily stopping traffic, and inviting everyone out, we can enjoy our streets together near our own front doors.

How does the Every One Every Day team help you get started? We try to make starting projects with your neighbours as easy and quick as possible. We help you talk to your neighbours, arranging meetings to discuss the idea, sometimes doing some gentle door knocking. We help with setting dates, making posters and promoting generally, and even have some small budgets for shared play equipment. We love supporting projects by helping with road closures and helping set up!

Play Street sessions coming up! Come and join us for a day of fun and meeting new neighbours: The aim of the Play Street is to give members of the local community an opportunity to get together to promote building relationships between different cultures and ages as well as giving children a chance to play safely.
