Say ‘hello’ to Dagmar Every so often companies embrace the world of art and design to create something genuinely original and exciting. The Dagmar series is a perfect example of a successful design collaboration that has passed the test of time. The series was designed more than four decades ago for the boardroom of an international, Danish company, but it has far transcended its original application thanks to its timeless and elegant design.

FLEXIBLE LEASING IS GAINING GROUND By Kåre Peitersen

In a short space of time, car leasing has become a huge hit with the Danes. Recently, one of the biggest leasing companies moved into the heart of Copenhagen to create a showroom in international style.

This autumn, Scanleasing opened a brand-new showroom in Axel Towers, where the products on display include Audis, Fords, BMWs and even an Aston Martin. All of the cars can be purchased, but the special thing is that they can also be leased – and that’s an offer that more and more Danes are accepting: from November 2017 until November 2018, the number of privately-leased cars in the country more than doubled. And there are several good reasons for that, says Ulrick Havndrup, sales director at Scanleasing, one of the country’s largest privately-owned leasing companies. The company specialises in so-called flex-leasing, in which you can lease a car for short periods ranging from a month to a whole year. The cornerstone of flex-leasing is that you only pay registration tax for a specific period. “It’s a very flexible way to use a car, because you can actually decide how long you want to lease for,” Ulrick explains. “That way, you can change your car frequently and avoid the bother of buying and selling it. And right now, you can also take advantage of the record-low interest rates to obtain favourable leasing terms. Traditionally, the most popular form of leasing for Danes has been a zero down payment followed by high monthly payments, but we would actually like to help our customers by offering them the reverse solution. Because if you have money in the bank at a negative interest rate, you might as well make a larger down payment and get lower monthly payments. Overall, that saves you money on the lease.” First movers in Copenhagen The head office of Scanleasing is in Kolding, but with its

new showroom in the heart of Copenhagen, the company is aiming to attract new customer groups. “We are first movers here in Denmark, but if you visit London, Paris or Hamburg you’ll find lots of exclusive car showrooms in the city centre. We have no tradition of doing this in Denmark, but now we’re trying to create an elegant and inspiring setting where you can come and learn more about the concept,” says Ulrick. He emphasises that although some expensive luxury cars have been placed as eye-catchers in the shop window, the vast majority of customers are ordinary people looking for a sensible family or company car. “We’re brand-neutral, so there are always lots of very different cars in stock. But if you have any special wishes with regard to brand, car class, year or equipment, we’ll be happy to find the right car for you – typically via the used car markets in Germany, where there’s a huge range of luxury cars.” Returning customers The leasing market can be a bit of a jungle to find your way around in, and here Scanleasing can offer all the advice it has built up through eleven years of experience and more than 15,000 leases. Typically, the company takes care of everything from service and advice to car preparation and repairs – and that makes it easy to have a car. “In fact, around 85% of our customers return to us for another car lease. We take that as an expression of satisfaction,” says Ulrick Havndrup. See more at: www.scanleasing.com

EXCLUSIVE JEWELLERY WITH EDGE By Kåre Peitersen

This season’s collection from ByBirdie consists of a series of fabulous jewellery featuring rough diamonds, keshi beads and rose-cut diamonds. Each individual piece is made by hand and is thus completely unique.

There are many Scandinavian jewellery designers who cultivate a minimalist look with pure metals, clear diamonds and round, white pearls – but that does not apply to Birdie Wendelboe, who for 15 years has been making extravagant jewellery under the name ByBirdie. You are instead reminded of tiny hidden treasures, as she is happy to combine gold with silver, or brilliant-cut diamonds with rose-cut diamonds – or cultured pearls with irregular keshi pearls. The result is an enchanting universe that has taken Scandinavian women by storm in recent years – and they will not be disappointed with the season’s new products. Royal British inspiration Typically for Birdie Wendelboe, she found the inspiration for this year’s collections on a journey, namely to London, where she noticed the old wrought iron fencing around Buckingham Palace. The winding leaf formations formed the basis for the Windsor collection, with soft and feminine jewellery pieces that are named after British castles. The Cullinan collection, on the other hand, is named after the world’s largest rough diamond, and is characterised by its generous use of uncut rough diamonds. The individual pieces are named after British queens, and

they also contain some keshi pearls, which are beads of mother of pearl formed by ‘mistake’ when trying to produce Tahiti pearls. “I love the irregular shapes of keshi pearls and rough diamonds, and it gives a really good look, along with pavées of rose-cut diamonds. I like to use a combination of gold and oxidised silver, so that the jewellery balances between the raw and feminine, the polished and the unpolished,” says Birdie Wendelboe. Only handmade jewellery Not many goldsmiths and jewellery designers work with keshi pearls and rough diamonds, because they demand a lot of work – but that’s exactly what appeals to Birdie Wendelboe. “The irregular forms don’t fit into solid shapes, but since all my jewellery is handmade, I can design each piece on the basis of the individual stone or gem,” she says. In this way, each piece of jewellery is unique – and that matches the spirit of the times, when many women like to have something personal that tells its own little story. You can find ByBirdie jewellery at retailers and ‘shopin-shops’ all over Denmark. For more information, see: www.bybirdie.dk

CLEAN LINES FROM SKOVBY By Kåre Peitersen

Skovby is keeping the tradition of good Danish furniture design alive with its latest furniture collection, the #800 series. This minimalist, flexible and versatile range of chairs is produced locally, in accordance with principles of sustainability.

It is no secret that much Danish furniture design has moved its production out of the country over the past generation. But in the small town of Skovby, between Aarhus and Silkeborg, lies the proof that high-quality Danish furniture is still being designed and produced here in Denmark. For an unbroken period of 86 years, Skovby has been making wooden furniture for customers in Denmark and abroad, and the latest collection is an excellent example of the minimalism and flexibility that has always been the hallmark of Danish furniture design. The #800 series offers many possibilities The new chair series consists of a counter stool, a bar stool and a variety of different dining chairs. As so often before, the series has been designed by Per Hånsbæk, who has worked closely with Skovby for more than 30 years. “During the design process, my aim and vision was to create a unique moulded veneer shell that would form the starting point for the #800 series. I wanted to make something with a little ‘edge’ – a form that would stand out from among the huge variety of shell chairs on the market. The result is an appealing geometric shape with distinctive lines that surprise you from every angle,” says Per Hånsbæk. The series also reflects a desire on the part of consumers to be able to customise and individualise their furniture, which is why all of the models are available in various different varieties and finishes, including oak, wengé and walnut. The frames can also be supplied in either chrome or black steel, and finally you can also decide whether you want the seats upholstered in fabric or leather.

Handcrafted furniture since 1933 The story of the Skovby brand begins back in 1933, when the young, talented carpenter Thorvald Rasmussen started up a modest furniture production in his mother’s home in Skovby. Later his son Villy continued the family business, and today the company is run by the third generation in the family, Thorvald’s grandchildren Preben and Jørgen Rasmussen. “We can proudly say that we work hard and passionately every day to continue the traditions of Danish design. Over the years, we have trained more than 250 men and women in furniture production, and via a flexible senior policy and a constant flow of around ten apprentices at any one time, we can safeguard our core values while investing in the future and new talents,” explain Preben and Jørgen Rasmussen. Sustainability secured through local production It is also important for the Rasmussen brothers to ensure that the production is sustainable. They use only wood from sustainable forests, utilise all surplus wood, and are continuously investing in energy-saving machinery and technology. “We always strive to create high-quality products that will last a lifetime and can be recycled and reused, over and over again. Wood is a vibrant, natural, renewable and warm material, and it’s the focal point of all our products. Sustainability in general is an important part of our business, and we wish to take people, materials and nature into consideration.” To view all the latest products and find your nearest retailer, see: www.skovby.com

Tough diving watch from Grand Seiko

This is Grand Seiko’s first mechanical diving watch for depth diving (600 m), and it is designed to cope with the most demanding challenges a professional diver can face. The strap and the case are both made from titanium, and the case has sharp edges and glossy surfaces – achieved through the brand’s acclaimed Zaratsu polishing process. Inside is the reliable automatic calibre 9S85 movement – designed, produced, assembled, adjusted and tested in Grand Seiko’s other studio, Shizuku-Ishi Watch Studio. The movement is high-beat and therefore oscillates with 36,000 vibrations per hour. It provides a 55-hour power reserve and a precision of +5 to -3 seconds per day.

Golden GMT from Grand Seiko

This sporty new product from Grand Seiko was reportedly inspired by the morning sun hovering over the horizon. The watch is in steel with a dark blue dial, while the bezel and details are in 18 kt. gold, which is a whole new colour combination in the collection. The watch has been made in the Shinshu Watch Studio – Grand Seiko’s studio for the advanced and revolutionary Spring Drive movements, which combine the best principles of mechanical watches with the precision of quartz. The movement is called formula 9R66, and it provides a power reserve of approximately 72 hours and an impressive accuracy of ± 15 seconds per month. The GMT hand can be set to local time without stopping the watch, and the precision is maintained even if the time zone is altered.

FOUR GREAT NEW PRODUCTS FROM SEIKO AND GRAND SEIKO

Elegant dress watch from Grand Seiko

One of the coolest things about Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive is the completely fluid way the second hand glides across the dial. With mechanical watches there are small jumps in the movement, while a quartz watch typically ticks every second – but with Spring Drive the movement is so smooth that it is almost mesmerising. In design terms, this is a classic, understated 38.5 mm dress watch in steel. The dial has a radiating pattern with a structure that provides a fine play of light and shadow, which is an essential part of Grand Seiko’s signature design. Inside is the new 9R31 movement, which provides a power reserve of approximately 72 hours and an accuracy of ± 15 seconds per month.

Tribute to a milestone from Seiko Prospex

This year it is 50 years since the first-ever successful production of a chronograph watch with automatic winding. This may not sound so impressive today, but back then it was a major technological landmark. And who were the first to solve the problem? This was Seiko, in close competition with Zenith and a conglomerate led by TAG Heuer. Opinion is divided on who exactly came first, but there is no doubt that Seiko’s calibre 6139 movement flooded onto the market in 1969 in a variety of different models. The movement was innovative, in that it contained a column wheel with a vertical clutch, which brought about a real improvement in the accuracy of its time measurement. The 50th anniversary this year is being marked with this Seiko Prospex chronograph, which is being produced in just 1,000 copies.

FRENCH 75 (or soixante quinze)

A fresh and dry drink that is perfect as an appetizer. Invented at the New York Bar in Paris during World War I.

Tip: When you can’t pronounce it in French any longer, you’ve had enough!

BELLINI

How to make it: Shake the gin, lemon juice and sugar well with a bit of crushed ice. Pour it all into a champagne glass and top up with champagne. Serve with a slice of lemon and a black olive.

By Kåre Peitersen

If you’ve bought plenty of bubbly for New Year, try mixing a few of these cocktails. And if you don’t have champagne, you can easily use dry cava, prosecco or crémant.

Perhaps the most famous champagne cocktail, this was invented at Harry’s Bar in Venice in the years around World War II. It is thus of Italian origin – the original recipe actually uses prosecco instead of champagne. You will need: • 10 cl prosecco • 5 cl peach juice / purée How to make it: Pour the peach juice/purée into a cooled glass and fill with champagne. Stir gently.

Tip: If you can’t find fresh peaches for the juice/ purée, peach juice or ready-made purée will do fine.

EASY CHAMPAGNE COCKTAILS CRANBERRY MIMOSA (or poinsettia)

The original mimosa cocktail is made with orange juice, but in the winter season cranberry juice also works well – for example for a luxury brunch. You will need: • 5 cl cranberry juice • 10 cl champagne • A drop of orange liqueur, such as Grand Marnier or Cointreau • A sprig of rosemary and/or fresh cranberry

The details must be right, and the material use must be coherent both inside and outside.

Exuberant Staturario Venato marble with continuous grain patterns transforms a kitchen element into a sculpture.

THE KITCHEN AS THE HEART OF THE HOME By Kåre Peitersen

Kitchen manufacturer Multiform is experiencing a growing demand for well-designed, long-lasting total solutions, in which the kitchen becomes an integral part of the home – right down to the smallest details of the materials, wall colours and lighting.

Dark wood kitchen elements can add a little contrast to a herringbone floor.

When you are renovating or building a new kitchen, you typically face a dilemma between choosing something classic or something trendy. Should you go for that shiny Ferrari red that you find so wildly attractive just now, or should you take a step back and think about what it will look like in 5, 10 or 20 years’ time? Maybe you should choose natural wood for the cabinets and steel for the work surfaces instead? Long-lasting and classic They are very familiar with this dilemma at Multiform, one of Denmark’s largest producers of exclusive luxury kitchens. And after a number of years of rapidly shifting trends in the market, it seems as though the Danes are starting to settle down a bit and are looking for longterm, stylish solutions when designing their kitchens. “Previously, there might have been a bit of a tendency to go out and buy a trendy kitchen, because it didn’t have to last that long. But that time is over – we no longer see those show-off conversation kitchens. Specifically, composites are on the way out, to the benefit of real, living materials – so we see many combinations of steel, wood, natural stone and brass. Most people are choosing something classic and timeless – something that will last for many years, in terms of both design and quality. And that means the customers are now also being very thorough in their preparations – they research and compare,” explains Lene Halse Hornemann, who runs the Multiform Design Centre in Copenhagen. About more than just the kitchen It’s actually a bit misleading to talk about kitchen design

26 Advertising supplement · Sponsored content

as something distinct, Lene thinks, because today the kitchen is almost always the heart of the home – so it’s a question of integrating it fully with the rest of the domestic universe. “And that’s something we’re good at here at Multiform, because we have in-house architects and interior designers. We always – always! – design total design solutions, in which we take both the furniture, floors, wall colours, artworks and lighting into consideration. So we also look at the hall, the living room and the terrace when we design. And fortunately, we’re in the middle of a really good period right now, when people are very involved and committed in terms of how they want to live.” Foreign interest in Danish kitchen design All of Multiform’s kitchens are tailored to the individual customer at the company’s carpentry workshop in Kibæk, where they have accumulated decades of experience in creating unique kitchen solutions with a combination of modern machine work and classic craftsmanship. And this approach to the kitchen has also begin to attract enthusiastic interest from abroad, says Lene. “We have just completed commissions in Switzerland and the US, and are generally experiencing great demand from abroad. Typically, customers discover us on Instagram and then plan to spend a few days in Copenhagen, where they can visit one of our shops and examine the possibilities with their own eyes.”

Right now, the Danes love herringbone floors.

The trees that become floors for Trækompagniet have typically grown tall for many years before being felled to make way for new ones.

Trækompagniet can handle the whole process, from initial advice to production, delivery and laying.

The living structure of wooden floors brings nature into your home.

All floors from Trækompagniet are delivered underfloor heating-ready.

WOOD DESERVES RESPECT By Kåre Peitersen

A solid wooden floor is not just some standard item you can pull off the shelf. Every floor is unique and tells its own story, says Trækompagniet, one of Denmark’s largest producers of exclusive wooden flooring.

Once in a while it makes sense to stop up and take a closer look at the things around you. How often, for example, do you notice the patterns and structure of your wooden floor? The wood that lies beneath our feet as we walk around in our living rooms or bedrooms actually has its own story to tell, and that’s something that deserves respect, says Frosti Thordarson. He’s the proprietor of Trækompagniet, one of Denmark’s largest suppliers of exclusive wooden flooring. “A solid wooden floor is not just some standard item you can pull off the shelf. It’s made from living trees that have grown tall over a long period of time. You should keep that in mind when you look at the beautiful grain and enjoy the sight of your floor in everyday life. And it’s also worth remembering when you’re buying a new floor, so that you don’t just stare blindly at the price. It’s a question of professionalism and respect for the material.” Specialist in customised solutions For the past 20 years, Trækompagniet has specialised in providing custom wooden floors for customers who are looking for something a little out of the ordinary. In 2018, the company took the final step and began manufacturing the floors themselves. “That means we have control over every part of the process. We follow the progress of the tree in the forest, and we’re there when it’s felled and stored for drying. We advise customers on the various options and create tailor-made solutions for them. And when the finished floor is ready to be delivered, we have our own installers to lay it and finish it. No-one else in Denmark handles the whole process all the way from living tree to wooden flooring, but our customers are demanding it more and more,” says Frosti Thordarson.

European oak beneath your feet Another thing to which Scandinavian customers, in particular, are paying more and more attention is the sustainability aspect, which is why Trækompagniet exclusively uses wood from forests where each felled tree is replaced with a new planting. “Trees know no national borders, but we always use European wood, primarily oak, and always from sustainable forestry,” says Frosti, whose company supplies floors to Scandinavia, Germany and the UK, amongst other places. Trends in wooden flooring When Trækompagniet was founded in the early 2000s the fashion was for wide plank flooring, but nowadays Danish customers demand classic and modern variants of herringbone floors, which were otherwise completely forgotten about for many years. There are also simply fashion trends in wooden floors, which is why Trækompagniet has developed its own way of staining and finishing its floors, so that unique solutions are always available. Right now, most customers want natural earth tones on the floor, which Trækompagniet achieves by pre-treating the floor with a special hard wax oil that provides a robust surface. Wood staining also provides a more effective solution than, for example, linseed oil, which was often used before. Frosti Thordarson recommends that you clean and then re-coat the floor with hard wax oil every second year. “Then you’ll have a beautiful floor with a good story behind it for the rest of your life,” he says.

SUMPTUOUS ITALIAN FASHION IN THE HEART OF COPENHAGEN By Kåre Peitersen

BINDESBØL on Kongens Nytorv not only has the country’s finest selection of exclusive Italian brands for men and women – the shop also offers a cosy setting with its own bar, experienced and service-minded staff, and one of the best views in the city.

In many ways, what you find in the multi-brand BINDESBØL shop on Kongens Nytorv is the perfect meeting between Italy and Denmark. For twelve years, they have specialised in importing a handpicked selection of the very best Italian brands for discerning Danish customers of both genders. The proprietors, married couple Michael Steen Larsen and Pia Ellersgaard Larsen, aim to offer their customers an exciting, high-quality range – so you’ll find everything here from big brands like Moncler, ETRO, Ermenegildo Zegna, Brunello Cucinelli and Missoni to smaller manufacturers specialising in a single product group. “We travel to Milan many times a year and personally select the styles that we know will suit our Danish and Scandinavian customers. We have many regular customers, so we have to be able to present them with new inspiration – which is why we are constantly adding new brands,” says Michael Steen Larsen. Room to breathe The ground floor in BINDESBØL is dedicated to the gentlemen, and here there is literally plenty of room to breathe. You’ll find everything here from luxurious cashmere sweaters from Brunello Cuccinelli and handmade crocodile leather shoes from Santoni to winter jackets from Moorer and lounge suits by Ermenegildo Zegna and Pal Zileri. Made-to-measure service is also offered in suits and shirts, and it is Jesper Petersen who, with 20 years of experience, takes the measurements every day. “We can see that customers appreciate that our products are not just buy-and-throw-away, but classic, timeless styles that can last for a long time and bring joy every single day,” says Michael Steen Larsen.

The shop’s customers come from both Copenhagen and the rest of Denmark, and many foreign tourists also find their way there. “We meet quite a few foodies who travel to Copenhagen for the great taste experiences in the city’s restaurants, and they also appreciate high-quality fashion wear.” Chatting in the bar over an espresso On the second floor you’ll find the ladies’ department, which has just installed an ETRO Corner to present the brand’s beautiful and colourful collections. Up here is also where you’ll find the bar, where you can take a break from shopping. “We aim to create the city’s cosiest shopping experience, so that you feel like you’re visiting a friend’s home. Lots of couples come in and shop together, and then they sit down on the soft furniture and read the newspaper, or have a chat with us at the bar, where we can serve them with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine,” says Pia Ellersgaard Larsen. She also finds that many customers meet up here with their friends when they’re in town. It’s clear why BINDESBØL is a good meeting place when you look at the many events held by the shop. When, for example, Hotel d’Angleterre turned on their Christmas decorations in late November, BINDESBØL celebrated the occasion with bubbly and almond cake for their customers. The events are typically held on Saturdays, and have recently included a James Bond theme, a girls’ evening with a stylist and show, and wine tastings. You can keep up with coming events by subscribing to the newsletter via the website, or via Instagram and Facebook. See more at: www.bindesboel.dk

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF DAVID K By Kåre Peitersen

What does a day look like when you have five fashion boutiques in central Copenhagen? Exclusive followed on the heels of the man with the tape measure – fashion and style expert David K.

1 David K putting ‘jeans-killers’ (beautiful chequered woollen trousers) in place at Herrernes Magasin. 2 After David K took over Hr. Sko in Jorck’s Passage, he has acquired a new ‘office’ – on the roof terrace overlooking the city’s rooftops. 3T he two Lundström’s stores specialise in suits and accessories at reasonable prices. You can buy a suit here for DKK 2-3,000. 4 Black Dot is a small tailor’s where you can get made-to-measure suits and shirts. 5 The atmosphere in Herrernes Magasin is relaxed, and you can always come in and have a chat about clothes – and a glass of draught beer at the end of the working day.

It is morning on a day in November, and I have walked from Nørreport Station and down Nørregade to meet fashion expert David K at his gentlemen’s outfitters, Herrernes Magasin, located in the historic premises that once housed Hans Christian Andersen’s publishers. Today there are just a few books on the shelves, and they are all about fashion and style. Otherwise, the shop is stocked with Italian suits, classic shirts, British bow ties, elegant shoes – and all the other things a modern gentleman needs in his wardrobe. Versatile stylist David K is standing on the cast-iron spiral staircase and talking to a customer as I come in, so I look around for a while. Just then, a Danish actor enters the store and hands in a suit to one of the assistants: “Tell David it’s going to be great. The film will be featured at the Sundance Festival next year, and it’s been bought by many of the European TV stations.” As it happens, David has just finished serving his customer and is on his way down the staircase. It turns out that he has rented out some clothes to the journalist and film director Mads Brüger for his coming documentary. “It’s been a really fun task,” David says afterwards. “I had to dress up a couple of actors in some really lovely, exclusive suits, so that they looked like people who were used to moving in the absolute elite of society.” It is not unusual for him to style people, because boards of directors and businessmen also regularly visit Herrernes Magasin to have suits made for a special event – as well as scenographers who need clothes for actors in historical dramas. If only clothes grew automatically in the wardrobe And then, of course, there are the many ordinary men of all ages who come into the shop in search of a suit for the office or a festive occasion. In that case it’s all about finding the customer a suit he feels comfortable with – because if you feel confident, you will also automatically radiate confidence, David believes. “Many of our customers are actually here somewhat against their will. Most men would prefer it if clothes would just grow automatically inside the wardrobe, so our most important job is to help them along with a bit of humour and self-deprecation, and create a relaxed mood. Very few men have any idea of what style they are going for, and they’re almost afraid of attracting attention, but we try to open their eyes to the many possibilities of dressing well. It doesn’t have to be anything outré,

but if you show them something chequered or with a little colour, many of them will be able to see the idea.” Time for a burger We put our coats on and head over to David’s latest store, the legendary Hr. Sko, which has been located in the Jorck’s Passage arcade for a generation. Accompanying us is Carl, who is in the 9th grade in Helsingør, and whose father is a good friend of David’s, so this week Carl is in work experience with David K. I ask him if he might become a fashion man himself someday. “I don’t know about that. But it’s always fun to be with David,” he says, smiling. David is talking on his phone as we walk, and as we enter Hr. Sko it rings again. It’s a big part of everyday life when you have lots of irons in the fire. David orders some new consignments of shoes for the shop, and then we continue our tour along the Strøget pedestrian street towards Store Kongensgade, which is where one of David’s two Lundström’s shops is located. Along the way we bump into a couple of David’s acquaintances, because apparently there is not a single celebrity or Copenhagener in the city that David has not helped with a suit. As we pass Gasoline Grill in Landgreven, David asks if we would like a cheeseburger. There isn’t always time for lunch in the fashion trade, but now we have ten minutes, so we should spend them on something tasty. Mode & Motor In Lundström’s we meet Morten, the manager, who plays rock ‘n’ roll on the sound system and is crazy about motorbikes. He and David are putting together a Black Friday event with the title Mode & Motor. With a little something for the palate and a small presentation on style, it will probably draw plenty of people to the store, which specialises in suits, shirts and accessories at reasonable prices. But now we must hurry on again, because we have to visit Black Dot, which David took over this summer. This is a small tailor’s on Gammel Mønt that makes bespoke suits and shirts to measure, and its combination of high quality and prices from DKK 5,000 has tempted many Copenhageners to drop by. Outside it’s starting to get dark, and soon it will be time for one of David’s regular customers to be measured for a shirt, so I thank him and head home. Along the way, I think to myself that I would have to agree with Carl: It’s always fun spending time with David. See more at: www.davidk.dk

The Dagmar chair and sofa, designed in 1961 by the architect Max Louw for a large Danish company. The furniture is now coming onto the market for the first time.

ASKMAN DESIGN RELAUNCHES HIDDEN DESIGN GEM By Kåre Peitersen

By chance, furniture manufacturer Askman Design discovered a piece of design history hidden away in the boardroom of a large Danish company. Max Louw’s Dagmar chair and sofa are now back in production for the first time since 1961.

The past many years have seen a rapidly rising level of interest in the golden age of Danish furniture design in the 1950s and 1960s, which has resulted in the re-launching of many designs. So many forgotten sketches and rare variants have been rediscovered and put on the market that it is now rare for hidden design treasures to emerge from the period. But it happens. As it did last year, when Hudevad Furniture was contacted out of the blue by a major Danish company, who had 24 chairs and a couple of sofas in their boardroom. They had been made to order in 1961 by Hudevad itself, and now the company wished to have them renovated. Rediscovered gem It turned out to be an exclusive order, designed by the architect Max Louw. The furniture had never been manufactured for anyone else, which is why only 24 chairs and two sofas existed from that time. But it would simply be a shame if more people could not benefit from them, thought Askman Design’s managing director,

Morten Sander. Askman Design is a co-owner of Hudevad Furniture, which is how Morten got to know about the rediscovered chairs and sofas, which went by the name Dagmar. “I fell in love with Dagmar straight away, so we entered into an agreement to take over the design and relaunch the furniture as soon as possible. The style matches our range perfectly and is a prime example of the period’s Danish furniture design at its best,” he says. Fine craftsmanship In his day Max Louw was known for his unique style, which drew inspiration from both southern Europe and the United States. His best-known architectural works are probably Hotel Kystens Perle and the restaurant Syv små hjem (Seven Small Homes), which depicted seven different style eras. However, very few furniture designs by him are known, which makes the rediscovery of Dagmar all the more interesting. The new versions of Dagmar are true to the originals,

with solid brass legs and well-upholstered seats covered in the finest leather. All of it is produced in Denmark, and the leather is hand-sewn, so the quality is top-notch. Askman Design aims high The relaunch of Dagmar is just part of a large-scale initiative that Askman Design has set in motion. The company’s roots go right back to 1913, but the past four years have seen a considerable upheaval. New investors have arrived with a vision of continuing the Danish design tradition, on the basis of both classic designs from the mid-20th century and brand-new furniture created in collaboration with the leading Danish designers and architects of the day. In order to have a good showcase, Askman Design has therefore recently opened a large showroom in Axel Towers in the heart of Copenhagen, where you can see both the Dagmar designs and all the other furniture from Askman. For Morten Sander this is something of

a dream come true, because an interest in Danish furniture design has occupied most of his adult life. “I’m quite simply a furniture man. I entered the furniture trade by chance back in 2002 via GUBI Furniture, where Jacob Gubi gave me a passion for design. After two fantastic years I came to Montana Furniture, where for the next 13 years Peter Lassen gave me a very large infusion of design and the motto ‘You’ve got to burn to shine’, which laid the foundation for my work and my passion. I have that motto with me everywhere I go, and use it every day in all my decisions,” says Morten. Among the new design initiatives, the ME chair, by the artist and architect Marco Evaristti, may be mentioned. Architect Klaus Simonsen’s new range of dining and meeting tables, named Star, can also be seen close up – as well as Marcus Vagnby’s soft, organic Herman chair, which may be used both at the dining table and in the lounge area. LONGINES CULTIVATES THE SWEET LIFE By Kåre Peitersen

The Swiss Longines watch brand has always been known for elegant ladies’ watches. Their most popular collection is called DolceVita and is now being expanded with a number of fine models – including a brand-new men’s watch.

‘La Dolce Vita’ is Italian for ‘the sweet life’, but it is also the name of one of the most popular watch collections by the Swiss watch brand Longines. Their DolceVita collection was created in 1997, with watches that are characterised by elongated, rectangular cases and consistently classic expressions. The inspiration is drawn from Longines’ own aesthetic universe as it looked in the 1920s – when art deco was the big trend of the day. New dials and straps New models joined the collection this autumn, with new dials and a whole new set of straps. It was all presented at a large-scale event in (where else?) Rome on 30 October, with Indian actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan lending lustre to the occasion. Bachchan has served as Ambassador of Elegance for Longines for 20 years, and a very limited edition of just five pieces has been launched as a tribute to this Indian beauty, who is very famous in her own country. The special edition will not be coming to Denmark, but the other three new items will, equipped with their new dials. The blue one is a feminine model with a stardust

dial that is designed to be evocative of romantic nights in Italy. The same model is also available with a white dial, and both of them contain a precise quartz movement. Accompanying these two ladies’ models is a set of brand-new straps in two different sizes, in eye-catching shades of yellow, orange, coral, warm brown, intense green and turquoise. The nice thing about the new straps is that they can easily be changed, so you can switch style in minutes – for example when leaving the office to go into town. If the classic style is more your thing, you can of course choose a bracelet. New men’s model The third new item stands out even more, because it is intended to be a men’s model in the otherwise rather feminine DolceVita collection. By making the case a bit larger (28.2 x 47 mm) and supplying the dial with Roman numerals, Longines has created a timeless and masculine expression. This model is powered by an automatic mechanical movement with a 40-hour power reserve. See more at: www.longines.com

A smart bed takes up no more space than a wardrobe.

Flemming Rømer has been running Den 7. himmel for almost 30 years. Here you will find eight different top brands spread over 1,000 m2 on two floors.

A SMART BED IS A SMART INVESTMENT By Kåre Peitersen

A quality bed need not take up any more space than a bookcase – at least, not when it’s folded up. With a smart bed you can both save space and sleep well.

Wall bed, fold-up bed, fold-out bed, smart bed – there are many names for it, but they all refer to the concept of a bed that can easily be packed away when you are not using it. One of the largest selection of these smart beds can be found at Den 7. himmel, where proprietor and bed expert Flemming Rømer has been dispensing advice on beds and a good night’s sleep for almost 30 years. For simple living and high-cost spaces Over the years, Flemming has seen many trends and fads come and go, and he has gained experience with everything from water beds and pocket springs to latex mattresses and adjustable beds – and now also smart beds, which appeal to several target groups. “Smart beds are a good solution for anyone for whom space is at a premium, but who at the same time want to have beds that are of high quality and good comfort,” he says. “They might for example be couples whose children have moved away from home, so they’ve swapped their house for a small city apartment. Or they might be families with children living in an area where the square metres are expensive, so when the children need to have their own rooms, the rest of the space has to be utilised optimally. I’ve also met many young couples who just prefer to live compactly on a low budget, so that instead of paying high rents they can spend their money on travel and experiences instead. So smart beds fit very well into the ‘simple living’ trend that is prevalent right now.” Book a time to try out a simulator bed However, the choice of bed is all about the design and

the physical construction – it’s essential to have the right mattress for a good night’s sleep. “And there’s no one solution, because it’s always an individual question,” says Flemming. “Eight out of ten people buy the wrong mattress in relation to their weight and physique. That’s why we always offer a back test in our simulator bed, and it’s always a bit of an eye-opener, because you can really feel the difference when we adjust the mattress while you’re lying on it.” He recommends that you take at least an hour to try out the possibilities, and if you have a busy life, you can book a personal advice session at any time – inside or outside normal business hours. Wide selection of quality beds Den 7. himmel is easy to get to on Roskildevej in Rødovre, and in addition to the new smart beds you can also explore the impressive range of beds from makers such as Nottinblú, Auping, Dunlopillo, Tempur, Carpe Diem, Jensen, Akva and more. For while many bed shops specialise in just a few brands, Flemming Rømer offers a wide selection of beds and bed environments from all the leading brands. “We can advise the customer on anything from aesthetics and interior design to mattress types and functions. So I dare to say that if you can’t find your next bed here, you won’t find it anywhere,” he says.

The five-star Hotel Can Simoneta is situated on a beautiful rocky coast.

The five-star Hotel Fontsanta lies like a green oasis on the southern part of the island. Mallorca is more than just charter parties – no less than 8 Michelin stars are sprinkled among the island’s restaurants.

Palma de Mallorca has a well-preserved old town with lots of sights and places to eat.

The Fontsanta is located literally on top of Mallorca’s only hot springs, which are utilised in the hotel’s extensive spa area.

THE OTHER MALLORCA By Kåre Peitersen

Mallorca. In the 1970s, the Spanish holiday island became the epitome of popular charter holidays for sun-hungry Northern Europeans. But today there is another Mallorca – with small boutique hotels, luxurious spas, stylish Michelin restaurants and unique cultural experiences. Exclusive followed in the footsteps of the discerning bon viveurs to see what Mallorca has to offer in 2019.

Very few things in life are as relaxing as lying in an almost weightless state in the warm, salty water of the Hotel Fontsanta spa. The water comes from the natural hot springs of the area, which are said to have been discovered by the Romans. As I doze, I think back on the many impressions I have received of Mallorca over the past eventful couple of days here in late October. When I landed at the airport outside Palma de Mallorca, I didn’t quite know what to expect. I had never been to this otherwise popular Spanish holiday island, even though I love Spain and have visited Catalonia, Extremadura and Andalusia. Like most people, I had only the vaguest notion of what kind of place Mallorca was, based on the well-known story of how the island was invaded in the 1960s and 1970s during the boom years of charter tourism, when Danes, Swedes, Brits and Germans came here searching for some Mediterranean sun and warmth.

I am met by a representative of Vanity Welcome. They specialise in making the airport experience more comfortable for visitors, and so they pick up their customers straight from baggage reclaim. Outside is a big black Audi, ready to take me to Hotel Fontsanta – a 45-minute drive to the southeast. Both Vanity Welcome and Hotel Fontsanta are part of the organisation Essentially Mallorca, which tries to draw attention to the fact that Mallorca has everything that a modern, luxury-seeking tourist could desire. Fontsanta is a spa hotel designed in harmony with nature, and it lies completely secluded in a park-like area where jacuzzis are discreetly placed behind flowering bushes, or alongside elegant lawns. There is free access to the spa for hotel guests who, in addition to the sauna, steam bath and the hot salt water baths, can also avail of massages and facial treatments – which, however, cost extra.

Five-star luxury The sunshine and the fine beaches are certainly still here, but something has happened to Mallorca, as I quickly discover – in fact, already at the airport, where

organic, family-run vineyard Son Sureda Ric. Married couple Fransisco Javier Jara Morales and Carme Llinàs changed course 15 years ago and said goodbye to secure jobs in order to revitalise the family’s winery. “We’re probably Mallorca’s smallest wine producer. We make around 3,000 bottles per harvest,” says Fransisco, as he shows me around the vines, sheep, black pigs and large cactus plants. He uses classic grape varieties such as Carbernet and Merlot, but also the local Callet, and he takes a pride in finding the right balance for the fermentation, which takes place in vats and steel tanks. The wines can be purchased for between EUR 15 and 50, which is extremely reasonable – as is demonstrated when he produces a bottle after our tour. Over half an hour, the matured red wine is gradually brought to life and shows just why Mallorca is becoming such a popular wine district. Meanwhile, Carme serves home-made snacks of traditional Mallorca cuisine: Panada mallorquina and coccaroi (two kinds of rolls filled with meat and vegetables), gallees d’olamb olivada (biscuits with olive tapenade) and not least the local delicacy, sobrassada sausage. Groups large and small (right down to two persons) are welcome to visit the vineyard for a tour and a tasting – you just have to book a time.

Some may find the gastronomic level in Mallorca surprising, for at the ambitious restaurants I visit it is, to say the very least, far removed from that of the legendary charter parties. This is perhaps best exemplified by the British chef Marc Fosh, whose restaurant lies in a beautiful old house in one of the narrow alleys in the historic centre of Palma. Marc came to the island many years ago and fell in love with it. Now he serves delicious dishes for foodies and other people on journeys of gastronomic discovery, and in the process has been awarded a Michelin star. “So I don’t suppose we’ll

be having fish & chips?” I ask with a smile when I visit him a few days after my arrival. He laughs – “Although I do make a pretty good version.” I’m sure he does, but instead we sample a tasting menu with lots of delights, of which the risotto with lobster and a taste explosion of a tomato consommé make a particular impression. Private luxury along the rocky coast From there I drive northeast and end up on the most beautiful rocky coast at the two sister hotels of Can Simoneta and Pleta de Mar, owned by the same family, who also own the Hotel Fontsanta. All three are small, five-star boutique hotels, individually decorated by local designers and artists. They are an intimate haven for those looking for exclusivity, peace and quiet – for which reason children are not allowed here. “Last year we had a Danish wedding. They rented the whole hotel – it was very romantic,” says PR manager Judit Ivern in Rubico over an extremely tasty lunch. The cook, David Moreno, is from Mexico and has previously worked at a Michelin-starred restaurant on the island. Now he has been given a free hand to create his very own fusion of Mexican and Mediterranean cuisine. We eat indoors, because quite unusually it has started to rain, although the day is warm. The season in Mallorca lasts from May to October, and those in the know say that September is the very best time to visit. Yachting life and tennis training Next day the sun is shining, which is very appropriate as I drive down to Port Adriano, a little west of Palma. Here you will find some of the Mediterranean’s largest luxury yachts, in a harbour that was expanded and redesigned by Philippe Starck a few years ago. In addition to the impressive range of yachts and motorboats of all sizes, some of which can be chartered if you fancy a boat trip, there is a large marina where shops and restaurants of all kinds lie side by side. I also manage to visit the Rafa Nadal Sport Centre, founded by one of the greatest tennis players of our time. Born and raised in Mallorca, Rafael Nadal practises at the centre on an equal footing with talents, tourists and other interested people. Here you can come and freshen up your backhand on a training stay of anything from a day to a week or more, and there is also a hotel, restaurant and gym, so a family of tennis enthusiasts can easily spend some time here. Mallorca is much more Then it’s back to the Fontsanta spa, where after my initial salt-water bath, I am given a soothing massage that leaves my body feeling completely soft and warm. After another fantastic dinner, I go to bed and can only conclude that Mallorca is much more, and much better, than I had imagined. And I’ve only just dipped my toe into the island’s many attractions.

For more than 80 years, the Swiss watch brand Jaguar has been the guarantor of high-quality sporty watches at attractive prices. Here you can see five different new items, one of which is a limited edition that is sold only in Denmark.

If you didn’t know better, you might easily be led to believe that the Jaguar watch is a spin-off of the classic British car brand of the same name. But that’s not the case – far from it, in fact. Even though both companies cultivate a combination of the sporty and the elegant, the Swiss watch brand is completely independent and has a long history behind it. In fact Jaguar could celebrate its 80th birthday in 2018, as it all started in 1938, when Swiss watchmaker Peter Haas founded the company. In his collections, he emphasised meticulousness and precision, and the design was particularly inspired by the elegance and strength that characterises the cat of the same name. In that respect, of course, he drew upon the same associations as the car brand. Everything made in-house After having created reliable and elegant watches for decades, Jaguar was acquired in 1989 by the international Festina Group, who soon afterwards began the revitalisation of the brand; it now focuses on a powerful and sporty expression that has helped to rejuvenate the target group. Today, Jaguar stands for watches with a high degree of Swiss Made quality at very attractive prices – you simply get really good value for money. As part of the Festina Group, the company can manufacture

all parts of the watches within its own ranks. The actual movements – both mechanical and quartz-based – are produced at the factory in Switzerland. New robust diving watches New watches are constantly being developed, and a major new departure came in 2017 with the launch of the Executive Diver collection, in which the quality was slightly increased without raising the prices. The collection is characterised by sturdy quartz movements, robust steel cases, screw-down crowns, sapphire glass and water resistance to 20 ATM – so you can wear it under all conceivable diving conditions. There are models with and without a chronograph, and they come in a range of fine colours. Prices start at DKK 2,998, which puts the watches in an attractive category that most people can afford. If you appreciate having a unique watch, look for the special editions that regularly come on the market in limited numbers. Recently, for example, the Jaguar Executive Diver model (ref. J876 / 1) appeared, which is sold only in Denmark and has been made in just 100 copies. You can see more, and read about all the other men’s and women’s collections, at: www.jaguarure.dk

DANISH DESIGNER JEWELLERY FOR MEN

1 A lexander Lynggaard in Los Angeles, where the idea for his own jewellery adventure took form. 2 T he trend is in the direction of more structure and a rawer expression, as here with black lava stone, matte onyx and tiger’s eye quartz. 3 S even of the most magnificent places in the world have given their name to seven new bracelets – including Himalayas, Sahara and Amazon, in which the stones match the colours of nature found in these places.

By Kåre Peitersen

In the space of just a few years Alexander Lynggaard has enjoyed huge success with his raw and casual jewellery, which is primarily aimed at men. Now, new colours and materials are being added to the collection.

It’s no longer unusual to see men with jewellery. Just a generation ago, it was almost only women who wore bracelets, necklaces and rings, but that is changing rapidly these days. Men, however, want their own kind of jewellery – typically in black and other dark colours, and preferably with structure and a raw expression, explains jewellery designer Alexander Lynggaard. He comes from a real jeweller family, but while other members of the Lynggaard family focus on jewellery for women, Alexander has designed a number of jewellery collections that are primarily aimed at men. “Men may well feel it’s a bit transgressional to wear jewellery, and not many start with a ring or a necklace. If you’re unsure about whether this is for you, I can recommend starting with some black onyx or lava stone bracelets. If you’re a bit more daring, you can move on to bracelets with green tiger’s eye quartz or dark blue lapis lazuli. And there are some slightly wilder colours, too, if you’re ready for it,” says Alexander Lynggaard, who was himself inspired to wear jewellery when he lived in Los Angeles, where he was surprised to see how many men used jewellery as part of their expression. This year’s new items have more structure It is now four years since the first of Alexander Lynggaard’s jewellery pieces appeared in the shops, but since

then things have been moving fast. Today they are stocked in a number of retailers all over Denmark, as well as a handful in Norway, Germany and Switzerland. And of course you can also buy the jewellery from his web shop. The range has grown with time and now includes a wide variety of coloured natural stone bracelets, leather bracelets with charms, and various types of rings and pendants. The most popular are the bracelets with natural stone, and several new items have been added this autumn. “I’ve expanded the series and found some new types of stones that are generally a bit more matte and raw in expression, compared to a few years ago. Some of the bracelets are named after a city that has inspired me along the way, such as Los Angeles, London and Copenhagen. But I’ve also created a series named after seven magnificent places in the world – including the world’s largest desert, the Sahara, and the world’s largest rainforest, the Amazon,” he says. All the bracelets are available with either 6 mm stones or 8 mm stones, so there is something for both large and slightly smaller wrists. Hvelplund has been on Strøget since 1998, but with the new expansion, the shop area has more than doubled.

Several small areas have been installed where you can examine the watches in peace and quiet – such as here in the Jaeger-LeCoultre area.

HVELPLUND EXPANDS By Kåre Peitersen

One of Copenhagen’s oldest and most comprehensive watch stores has expanded this year with new premises – especially designed for exclusive brands such as Patek Philippe and Cartier.

The name Hvelplund is familiar to most Danes with a liking for exclusive timepieces, as the Copenhagen shop has been selling some of the world’s finest watches for almost 50 years. Paul Hvelplund, the proprietor, has practically grown up with a passion for watches, as his father was a watchmaker and had a shop in Vestersøgade from 1971. Paul opened his first shop in 1998, and today he is located at the classy end of Strøget, the main Copenhagen shopping street, where he sells brands such as Omega, Breitling, IWC, Cartier, Jaeger-LeCoultre – and not least Patek Philippe, for which the Hvelplund shop has been an authorised dealer since 1975. New settings bring new possibilities After having had two different shops on Strøget, Paul Hvelplund decided to close one of them last year and combine forces in a single, larger shop. For this reason, the Hvelplund shop underwent some major changes this year. However, the original part of the shop remains largely the same, with unvarnished plank floors, characteristic furniture and decorations on the walls and ceilings that are reminiscent of a 19th-century luxury apartment in Copenhagen. The new aspect is that they have taken over the neighbouring property and equipped it with a number of shop-in-shops for selected brands. Most prominent of these is the large Patek Philippe lounge area, but there are also areas dedicated to Omega, Breitling, IWC, Cartier and Jaeger-LeCoultre, amongst others.

“First and foremost, we are pleased to have acquired more space to serve our customers, but you could also call it a future-proofing of the shop. More and more demands are being made by the brands, who would like to design their own shop decor and have a say in the customer service. However, it was important to us that we preserved our own DNA, so people still have to go through our old shop to get to the new, more modern premises,” Paul Hvelplund explains. Customers expect greater buying experiences It is characteristic of the times that customers want buying an exclusive watch to be an experience – whether it’s a Longines for DKK 15,000 or a Jaeger-LeCoultre for DKK 250,000. And there are good possibilities for that in the new setting, where you can sit in peace and quiet and be absorbed by the world of the individual brand. “Customers expect more complete buying experiences. And there’s more focus on the individual brands today than there was in the past. If you’re a Breitling man, for example, then you are fully dedicated to it. Now we can offer part of the individual brand’s atmosphere in the process, and for many people that’s a large part of the joy of buying a watch,” says Paul Hvelplund, who has already experienced positive reactions to the new environment from both his regular customers and curious Strøget shoppers. Certina DS-1 Big Date 60th Anniversary 41 mm (ref. C029.426.11.091.60). Price DKK 6,950

DS stands for Double Security, as shown on the case back.

CERTINA DS CELEBRATES ITS 60TH BIRTHDAY

Certina are known for their robust sports watches at reasonable prices.

By Kåre Peitersen

In 1959, Swiss Certina launched its first shock-proof Double Security watch. On the occasion of the DS series’ 60th birthday, the brand has put a fresh, green anniversary model on the market.

A small mechanical watch movement is a delicate thing, and it goes without saying that the tiny gears and moving parts must be protected as well as possible from dirt, water and shocks. Certina solved this challenge to something near perfection in 1959 when they launched their DS series. DS stands for Double Security, and its secret is a particularly robust case construction and a shock-absorbing inner ring that ensures that the movement is well protected and cannot be knocked off track. Technological achievement at a good price Today, it may seem obvious that a wristwatch should be able to withstand some shocks and water, but 60 years ago this was something of a sensation from Certina – especially as they managed to do it in a way that didn’t make the watches overly expensive. It is still a characteristic of the Certina brand that its watches are accessible by most people – as is nicely illustrated by the under DKK 7,000 price tag on the anniversary edition. Made of steel, it comes with an eye-catching retro mesh strap that perfectly matches the fine green dial with its sunburst effect. The date is easy to read and is made up of two rotating disks. On top of all this, of course, comes the scratch-proof sapphire glass, while the back case is in steel – completely in line with the historical sports watches of the 1960s. Impressive movement inside So what is the movement that lies so well protected inside the DS case? It’s nothing less than the eminent

ETA Powermatic 80.651. Today, Certina is part of the Swatch Group – like ETA, which produces the watch movement. The Powermatic is therefore available in various versions in several of the Swatch Group brands, but this does not make it any less interesting, because once again it represents high quality at a reasonable price. In some versions the movement is COSC-certified, which provides an independent guarantee of its precision and reliability, but in this case the watch has not been certified – apparently to keep the price down. It is however still a very precise watch that you can put on your wrist, and the best part is that you can enjoy no less than 80 hours of power reserve. This means that even if you take the watch off on Friday afternoon and leave it lying still all weekend, it will still go precisely when you pick it up on Monday morning. New hairspring material A distinctive feature of the Powermatic movement is the innovative Nivachron material that has been used for the coil hairspring – the heartbeat of the watch itself. This was done because titanium-based Nivachron is not influenced by magnetism. A mechanical watch will usually begin to run irregularly if it is exposed to magnetic fields – which is easily done, because most of us carry magnetic fields around with us, in our phones and laptops. But this will not affect the new Certina DS. For more information, and to find your nearest retailer, see: www.certina.com

# 1 Whale safari on Vancouver Island, Canada Get up close to the great giants of the sea

Sail along the coast of Vancouver Island and see killer whales slicing through the icy water, against the background of Canada’s snow-capped mountains and pine forests. The glossy black giants are one of most sophisticated predators of the seas, as well as real family animals that live close together in their own groups. In the same area you can also see humpback whales, minke whales and grey whales – all from motorboats with silent-running motors that disturb the animals as little as possible.

# 4 Private boat trip from Phuket, Thailand See Phang Nga Bay behind the facade

Phang Nga Bay in Thailand is a unique landscape of jungle-covered limestone cliffs rising up from the sea in almost random fashion, as though they had been picked up by a giant hand and cast across the bay in a single throw. Many tourists visit the bay to catch a glimpse of James Bond Island, or to kayak through stalactite-filled grottos to pristine lagoons. On this trip, you will set off on a private long-tail boat. On board are just you and your fellow travellers, the guide and the captain. This gives you the freedom to experience a whole different side of the bay, away from the other tourist boats, and to snorkel, sunbathe and absorb the experience completely in peace and quiet – just as it should be.

# 2 Snorkelling in Crystal River, Florida Fall in love with Florida’s chubby mermaids

# 3 Snorkelling on the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico Swim with the world’s biggest fish

You’ve probably guessed it – the whale shark is the biggest fish in the world. It can grow up to 12 metres long and weigh up to 20 tons. So it’s good to know that it lives on plankton, krill, small fish and squid, which it filters through its giant mouth. Along the Yucatán Peninsula, you can swim with this peaceful and elegant giant on its own terms, in the company of expert nature guides – and if you’re lucky, curious manta rays, turtles and dolphins will probably pass by, too.

1,000 kilos of pure love, two much too small flippers and a tail: Florida’s sea cows are among the most lovable animals in the world. The West Indian manatee is the world’s largest sea cow. Some of them can weigh up to 1,500 kilos, and the stock of ‘gentle giants’ is now thankfully recovering after being reduced to just a few hundred individuals in the 1970s. Today, there are more than 6,000 sea cows in the area of Florida’s Crystal River, and everyone in the family can get close to them. The only danger is falling head over heels in love with the affectionate creatures!

One of Beauté Pacifique’s popular products is this A-Vitamin Crème Métamorphique. You can test the effect yourself by having a skin scan before and after using the product for a few months.

It costs absolutely nothing to have an ultrasound scan at one of Beauté Pacifique’s dealers nationwide – you just need to book a time in advance.

SEE FOR YOURSELF HOW YOUR SKIN’S DOING By Kåre Peitersen

The world of skincare products can be a bit of a jungle to find your way around, so the Danish company Beauté Pacifique offers free skin tests for customers at their retailers nationwide. You can take a scan every few months and see if the products make a difference.

Who wouldn’t like to keep their skin supple and soft? Women of all ages – and more and more men – are trying, not to turn back the clock, but at least make it go a little slower, so that your facial skin doesn’t wrinkle and age too quickly. And for this purpose, there is, as we all know, a vast range of more or less exotic products available with all kinds of ingredients. For the consumer this can be quite a jungle, because how can you know what works and what doesn’t? Get a free skin scan So that you can see for yourself what really works, Danish Beauté Pacifique has developed an ultrasonic scanner that you can try out for free by booking a time at your local dermatological products retailer. Here, a professional consultant will scan your facial skin and show you the results, so that you can see how your skin is doing – and what it might be lacking. “The condition of your skin is not always clear to the naked eye, so it can difficult for the consumer to know how to care for it. But the scan pictures clearly show your skin’s structure, condition and needs, and allow us to detect sun damage and age changes before they become visible,” says Gitte Mayland, a consultant at Beauté Pacifique. As well as giving you a free skin scan, the experts are also ready to provide advice and recommendations on how to take best care of your skin. If you have had a scan before, you can come in again and get a new one,

so that you can compare the ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures and form your own opinion on whether the products have made a difference or not. Behind ultrasound scanners for hospitals Beauté Pacifique has been developing skincare products since 1997, and their products are sold in over 500 shops in Denmark and in a number of countries around the world. And in fact, the skin scanning devices have been the very essence of the brand’s success, because ever since the company was established in 1997, it has been important to show that the products actually work, explains the founder, Flemming K. Christensen. “The core of our products is that we can prove their effects. We have developed the equipment ourselves that we use to scan our customers’ facial skin: They are professional devices that are also found in hospitals. When we scan our customers’ skin, both they and we can see the sun damage, age changes and various types of skin problems. If the customer chooses to use the products we recommend, they can come back at any time and take a new scan to see if it has had an effect. You can see significant improvements after just a month – the skin simply becomes smoother and healthier in appearance,” says Flemming. For more information, and to find a scanning day in your locality, see: www.beaute-pacifique.com

It takes a steady hand to spray the cream puffs

The dragées have become a big hit in recent years.

CHOCOLATE FOR GENERATIONS By Kåre Peitersen

Owning your own chocolate factory sounds like a childhood dream, but what is life really like behind the cream puff conveyor belt and the chocolate waterfall? Exclusive visited Royal Court Purveyor of chocolates Sv. Michelsen Chokolade and spoke with the third generation of the family-owned company.

14 minutes. That’s how long it takes a cream puff from Sv. Michelsen to run along the conveyor belt. First of all the freshly-whipped cream is sprayed onto the marzipan base, then it takes a slow trip under the chocolate waterfall, and finally it is decorated with a small logo or a Halloween skull, depending on the season. For the last long stretch the puffs cool down, before being packed into boxes at the end of the belt and immediately driven out to the shops – because for cream puffs, freshness is crucial, explains Nicolas Dorff, of the third generation in the family company Sv. Michelsen Chokolade. “Cream puffs last for 14 days, so they need to reach the customers immediately.” A family of traditions 86 years. That’s how long Nicolas Dorff’s family has been making chocolate and other sweet things at their factory. It all started with Nicolas’s maternal grandfather, Svend Michelsen: He founded the company in 1933, and later his daughter and son-in-law took over the business. Today it is Nicolas Dorff who is responsible for upholding the quality of the family’s traditions, and since he has literally grown up surrounded by chocolate, it’s something that comes naturally to him.

When I visit Sv. Michelsen’s factory at the end of autumn, the pressure is on to produce both Halloween puffs and lots of gift boxes for that very big chocolate event: Christmas. The word ‘factory’ is perhaps a bit misleading, because much of the work is actually done by hand, and you get the impression of a large industrial kitchen rather than a factory. Some employees are busy whipping cream and spraying cream puffs by hand, while others are sprinkling liquorice onto dragées, and a third is mixing marzipan for chocolate-covered marzipan bars. Each individual process is a small piece of craftsmanship, and of course it takes longer than if it was all driven by machine power – but at Sv. Michelsen, they don’t wish to compromise on quality. “We believe you can taste the difference – that care has been put into every part of the process. Our customers appreciate the concept of ‘little but good’, so every bite must be perfect – whether it’s the cream puffs, the filled chocolate or our pure chocolate bars,” says Nicolas, as he shows me around the various parts of the production. Tastes change Over the past 86 years, the taste buds of the customers have slowly changed. Today, for example, there is not so

The original shop from 1933.

much demand for chocolate filled with pickled pineapple or plums in Madeira, which were otherwise very popular a generation ago. “These days, our customers emphasise high-quality ingredients and a pure taste experience, so it’s all about ‘less is more’. And of course it also reflects the times we live in. In the old days, pickling with sugar was the only way to preserve the fruit, but now we also use freeze-drying, which gives a purer fruit flavour and is great for raspberries, for example,” Nicolas explains. Focus on sustainability Another thing that has changed in recent years is an increased awareness of where the ingredients come from. Sustainability has therefore come into focus in the small factory. In 2016, Sv. Michelsen became the first Danish chocolate manufacturer to choose to buy all of its cocoa on Fairtrade terms. “We try to create the best possible flavours and at the same time make a difference to all parts of our value chain. Cocoa is our most important ingredient, and we buy it in places in the world where people do not have much. By purchasing from Fairtrade co-operatives in Africa, we ensure that it becomes more attractive for farmers to grow cocoa, both through greater yields in the harvest and in the price they receive for their crops. It means they can afford to continue to cultivate the land, plant new cocoa bushes, and see a future for themselves and their families,” he says, adding that it is only possible to do so if the taste and quality are right. “We can’t expect our customers to accept a slightly inferior taste because we’ve chosen to buy through Fairtrade. Because then they just won’t buy our chocolate, and that won’t help anyone in the end.”

Much of the work is still done by hand.

The chocolate waterfall is followed by a cooling process – and then the cream puffs are ready.

Sv. Michelsen Chokolade has been a Royal Purveyor of Chocolate since 1992.

Recycled plastic for packaging Sv. Michelsen were also among the very first chocolate manufacturers to use egg whites from free-range hens for their popular cream puffs. “This was actually due to a customer request a few years ago. They wondered why we were using egg whites from conventional eggs, so we contacted our supplier, who found a solution – and now it’s standard in the industry,” Nicolas explains. And sustainability does not stop with the ingredients – Sv. Michelsen have also made several changes to their packaging. The dragées are for example packed in plastic boxes made from recycled materials, and all the types of paper used in the production are also recycled. We end our tour in Nicolas Dorff’s office, where there’s a plate of filled chocolates ready to be tested. Having your own chocolate factory doesn’t seem like the worst job in the world. “We try to make every day an occasion,” says Nicolas with a smile. See more at: www.svmichelsen.dk

If you look after your fur coat, it can last up to a century. And if you get tired of the design, it can be re-sewn into a brand new, contemporary form. So says Alex Petersen, who has both a sewing workroom, a furriery, a shop and a cold store all in one place.

It’s a trend we’re seeing everywhere right now, both in fashion and in the interior design industry: consumers are looking for sustainable products made from genuine natural materials. They want wood, leather and ceramics in the home – wool and organic cotton in the wardrobe. And in the great hunt for natural products, classic furs have made a comeback and are now enjoying a renaissance as sustainable outerwear. That, at any rate, is what Viggo Alex Petersen would like to see. He is the fifth generation and owner of the traditional, family-owned fur house of Alex Petersen, which has been producing fur products for discerning consumers since 1903. “Fur is the world’s most sustainable outerwear, because if you take good care of it, it can last 100 years. I’ve never seen a nylon jacket do that. And if you get tired of it, you can have it re-sewn or pass it on to your children. That way, a coat can last for several generations, just like a christening robe. Finally, you can also choose to transform the coat completely into a pair of cushions or a rug – we have many customers who do that,” says Viggo. If you have inherited a fur and do not want to have it re-sewn, you can also choose to sell it at the world’s only dedicated fur auction, at Alex Petersen. The fur will be stored in refrigerated condition, and you can be sure that it will be properly assessed and promoted towards the best conceivable audience, both in the shop and online. Fur production all under one roof The Alex Petersen company is located in Skodsborg, where you will find a 500 m 2 combined shop and workroom divided by glass walls, so that you can watch the work as the fine furs are sewn by hand. The company has both its own sewing workroom and its

own furriery, where they carry on the old traditions of craftsmanship. The furrier sorts and selects the finest furs, so that the best pieces are always chosen for the collar, cuff and back. The seamstresses then hand-sew and perforate the ready-cut furs, and then make the sleeves and collars for the finished coat, after which the silk lining is inserted. Finally, the furrier polishes and brushes the fur so that it is ready for the shop or customer. Furs old and new The company always has a wide selection of furs available for both men and women, including both classics and ultra-modern designs. And if you still can’t find your dream fur, you can design and make your very own fur from scratch, in collaboration with the house’s designer and furrier. “A fur doesn’t necessarily have to be a winter coat. A lot has been happening over the past five years, where we’ve been working on a gentler tanning technique that makes the furs thinner and softer, so that you can wear them in most seasons of the year. One of the most popular items right now is a coat of knitted mink with cashmere. It has a completely different look to a classic mink coat, and can be used all year round,” says Viggo. Alex Petersen goes on Winter Tour During the winter months, Viggo Alex Petersen and his staff will be travelling around and meeting customers at Skovshoved Kro and Hotel D’Angleterre. The various options will be presented at these events, and you can feel the differences for yourself and learn more about fur. Watch out for this season’s Winter Tour on the website. Oris Big Crown ProPilot X Calibre 115 44 mm (ref. 115.7759.7153. MB.7.22.01.TLC). Price with bracelet DKK 58,100, and with strap DKK 53,900.

The watch measures 44 mm, which would normally be considered on the large side, but the design makes it fit nicely on my wrist. Photo: Kristian Dowling / Oris

The watch and its movement have been designed and built entirely from scratch.

There is an unimpeded view of the new calibre 115 movement.

MECHANISM OF THE FUTURE By Kåre Peitersen

In September, Swiss watch brand Oris launched its new venture, the ProPilot X, which both looks back at the classic pilot watches and forward to a high-tech world, with its sandblasted titanium skeleton and 10-day power reserve. Exclusive was invited to attend the world premiere in Shanghai.

As I stand on top of the 30-storey Edition Hotel Shanghai on the night of Thursday 6 September, it’s almost like stepping into the futuristic universe of the classic 1982 science fiction movie Blade Runner. Dark clouds cover the sky, and a heavy rain gradually begins to fall. On Pudong Island, on the other side of the river, which intersects downtown Shanghai, the up to 600 metre-tall skyscrapers vie with each other, sparkling with patterns of light and video clips, while their upper storeys disappear into the clouds. But this is no Hollywood movie I am in, but the product launch for a mechanical watch. The independent Swiss brand Oris has invited a large part of the world’s watch press to Shanghai to see the watch which the CEO of Oris, Rolf Studer, has described as ‘the most Oris watch ever made’ ‘and ‘our greatest venture’: the Oris Big Crown ProPilot X Calibre 115. A watch that points to the future – and the past It is quite normal for Swiss watch brands to make a great deal out of their product launches, but this event is still something special. Almost 100 people have been invited to the official dinner and presentation, and in addition to a number of Chinese dealers, journalists and collectors, people have flown here from the US, Japan,

Korea, the Philippines and all of Europe. Together we watch as a clearly proud Rolf Studer lifts the veil on the new ProPilot X, which certainly looks nothing like anything Oris has ever produced before. It is first and foremost a skeleton watch, which is to say that it does not have a classic dial as such, but just an x-shaped structure of bridges, between and on which the various parts of the clockwork are located. It is in Rolf Studer’s words, ‘a watch that has no secrets’, because you can see everything that is going on inside it. “It’s raw and industrial and built up from our DNA. The modern era was born from cast-iron bridges and highrise buildings, and that’s why we launched it here in Shanghai, because it’s a very modern city with inspiring architecture. The ProPilot X points to the future in a time when a lot of other things are all about heritage. We also have many heritage watches that celebrate the aesthetics of, say, the 1960s, but we also want to be able to offer something that shows the future,” Rolf Studer explained earlier in the day, when we were briefed in small groups on the watch in all its details, and I was allowed to try it out. Oris’s Senior Product Design Engineer, Lukas Bühlmann, also said of the design process that: “It’s about sending Oris’s pilot watch into the next generation. We’ve made

The hypermodern skyline of Shanghai provided the perfect backdrop to the launch.

The references to aviation include: the titanium material, the strap’s resemblance to a seat belt, the turbine look of the bezel and, of course, the large winding crown – a relic of the early pilot watches, where pilots had to be able to operate the watch while wearing gloves.

pilot watches before, but what does a modern, luxury Oris pilot watch look like? This watch is certainly not a traditional pilot watch. There are for example no numbers on the dial. But the DNA of aviation can be traced in the details: We used titanium for the case, the bezel is inspired by a jet turbine, and the strap mimics a seat belt. I wouldn’t call it a futuristic look, but it’s driven by faith in the future.” From Hölstein to Shanghai It is otherwise quite a distance from Shanghai to Hölstein, the small Swiss village where Oris was founded in 1904, and where the company is still located. Up through the 1960s, Oris was one of the world’s ten largest manufacturers of both watch movements and wristwatches, and produced more than a million units a year. But just as with all other Swiss watch manufacturers, the 1970s became one long ordeal when cheap Japanese quartz watches pulled the rug out from under the production of mechanical watches. However, Oris just about managed to get through it, and is now one of the few brands that can boast of having manufactured mechanical watches continuously since 1904. A typical Oris watch costs between DKK 10,000 and DKK 25,000, which in the world of mechanical watches is referred to as ‘affordable luxury’, or ‘entry level’, and with a price tag of just under

Your correspondent goes on a virtual reality trip inside the watch movement.

DKK 60,000, the ProPilot X is one of the most expensive watches from Oris’s production. Skeleton watch built from scratch It has taken more than two years to develop the watch, which has literally been built from scratch. The actual movement is a refinement of Oris’s calibre 110, which was created to mark the brand’s 110th anniversary in 2014. The most remarkable feature of this movement is a power reserve of no less than ten days – which means that once you have wound up the watch, it will run for ten days. Or in fact twelve days, they say at Oris, but they can’t guarantee exact precision (+6 / -4 seconds per day) for the final two days. However, the new calibre 115 differs from the calibre 110 in that, because Oris wished to make a real skeleton watch, the movement itself had to be reconstructed as well. “We’ve had the movement for a long time, but nobody could see how amazing it looked. Now we have the chance to show it off,” says Beat Fischli, COO of ORIS. He has no hesitation in calling the mainspring the heart of the watch, and the part he is most proud of. “It gives the watch so much character, and its look changes, depending on how much the spring is wound up. Normally the mainspring is hidden, even in a skel-

eton watch, but we felt we had to show it because there is a very large part of the watch’s history in that ten-day power reserve. A mechanical watch typically has a 40hour power reserve – this one has 240!” Why would anyone need a mechanical watch? It is extremely fascinating to hear about the technology behind a watch like the ProPilotX, but you might well ask yourself why you would need a mechanical watch in our day, when we are constantly online and can see the right time at a glance. Rolf Studer is happy to answer that question: “We want to make people smile. When you get right down to it, a mechanical watch is not a useful device nowadays, but a kind of luxury item, so our job is to bring a little joy into people’s everyday lives. Whether it’s the beautiful dial, the fascination with the watch or something else entirely, it’s the joy that is important. Today, luxury is also about telling a good story. The watch that grabs people’s attention at a meeting or dinner is not necessarily the most expensive one or the most spectacular, but the one with a good story. And we feel that’s exactly what the new ProPilotX has.” Read more, and find your nearest retailer, at: www.oris.ch

RAW Metallic Brown adds warm tones to a table setting.

NEW RAW HUES By Kåre Peitersen

The popular RAW stoneware series by aida has just been launched in the shades Midnight Blue and Metallic Brown. Mix and match the elements with the existing Northern Green to create a personal and elegant table setting.

The RAW collections have been created in collaboration with Danish lifestyle expert, actor and TV presenter Christiane Schaumburg-Müller.

Most of us love to invite guests home for food and chat, and of course you like the table to be nicely set. But not too nicely: it can also be a touch raw, with a bit of edge and personality. And for that, aida’s RAW universe is perfect. RAW is a versatile and timeless collection of beautiful items for the table and kitchen, and the stoneware tableware series, with its unique expression and modern functionality, has become particularly popular. Gorgeous new colours Last year came the green version Northern Green, which has now been complemented by the colours Metallic Brown and Midnight Blue. Metallic Brown is inspired by the glinting body of the dragonfly against the deep surface of a summer lake. The dark brown shade creates a fine contrast to the glittering gold glaze. You can set a sparkling table with Metallic Brown alone, but you can also combine it with the colours Northern Green and Midnight Blue. Midnight Blue is inspired by the blue and green shades of the Northern Lights dancing in the sky. Mysterious midnight blue is a dominant hue everywhere in both fashion and décor at the moment, and when you combine it with warm Metallic Brown and intense Northern Green, the result is a beautiful and personal expression. The secret is in the glaze RAW tableware is characterised by being handmade,

with a scratch-free glaze with a deep structure and texture that gives the set a highly sensual expression. The glaze does not consist of a single homogeneous colour, but varies in shade and texture due to the chemical process that occurs when the stoneware is fired in the kiln. Here the glaze develops differently from piece to piece, which means that the set varies in colour intensity, crystallization and layering. It is a technique that is highly valued by potters, as the many variations make each piece unique and give each set a handmade stamp. Scandinavian expression The RAW stoneware series includes many different variants of mugs, plates and bowls, and new elements are being added all the time. The stoneware is double-fired and made from the best materials, partly moulded and partially cast, which makes it both light and strong, while remaining relatively slender. As a result, it can tolerate both oven, microwave, freezer and dishwasher. RAW has been created in collaboration with the actor, lifestyle expert and fashion icon Christiane Schaumburg-Müller, who is known for her fine sense of design, interior and fashion. The entire RAW universe is typically Scandinavian in its expression, and besides the mentioned stoneware series, you will also find elements such as teak wood, cork, recycled leather and glass. THE OSCARS OF THE WATCH WORLD By Kåre Peitersen

What do you get if you cross the Oscar awards with the Swiss watch world? The answer is GPHG, the annual watch industry celebration in Geneva, at which the ‘The Golden Hand’ statuette is awarded. Exclusive was there when Seiko, Tudor and in particular Audemars Piguet won prizes.

When I received my ticket to the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) in mid-October, it wasn’t just an e-mail with a barcode. The Swiss like to do things in good, old-fashioned style, so a thick envelope arrived by post, and inside was a fine, gold-embossed admission ticket. I thanked the organisation’s press officer and asked her if there was a programme for the evening. “It starts at 18:30 – precisely!” she replied. Precision, of course, is a virtue in the Alpine country, and if the watch world’s answer to the Academy Awards failed to start on time – well, the world would surely come to an end. Watchmaking is serious business At 6:00 pm on Thursday 7 November, I therefore stroll, with plenty of time to spare, along the shores of Lake Geneva towards the Théâtre du Léman, where the awards ceremony is taking place for the 19th time. Here, the press, producers, collectors, celebrities and everyone who is anyone from the international watch world gathers annually on a night in November to pay tribute to the most beautiful, refined and innovative watches of the past year. The red carpet and the foyer are packed with people, but we slowly enter the hall, which can hold close to 1,000 people. It may be that for some people, wristwatches are a small, odd niche, but for the Swiss this is a token of national pride and identity, much like Danish Design is for the Danes. This is very much serious business. And a business, we should note, that recorded a turnover of DKK 143 billion in 2018 in Switzerland alone.

d’Histoire (MAH), where all of the nominated watches were on show. It is actually a rare sight to see so many high-end watches all in one place – and not even behind glass displays. True to tradition, the world’s watch brands had been invited to nominate their own watches for the various categories, after which the independent GPHG organisation published the shortlist of nominees in September. This year there are a total of 84 competing watches, and 19 prizes will be awarded, the most important of which transcends all categories and is called the Aiguille d’Or Grand Prix. The prize awards are decided by an independent jury of 30 experts from all parts of the watch industry. The composition of the jury changes every year, but among this year’s members we find acclaimed watchmaker Philippe Dufour, Hodinke’s editor-in-chief, Jack Forster, and the owner of the Bovet watch brand, Pascal Raffy.

5 Finnish super watchmaker Kari Voutilainen received all of two awards, including for this beautiful work of art. Price: around DKK 1.7 million.

Half Dean Martin, half Serge Gainsbourg To guide us through the programme we have the actor Edouard Baer, who does a very professional job with a pleasant blend of charm, lyrical passages and crooner style, as though this were a French late-night show - half Dean Martin, half Serge Gainsbourg. He is joined by a pianist and a singer who are tasked with accompanying the award winners from the stage, but who also have time to squeeze in a couple of cool French ballads now and then.

And the winner is … In the course of the show, prizes are awarded to Bvlgari, Chanel, Seiko, Tudor and not least Audemars Piguet, which ends up winning the most prestigious award, the Aiguille d’Or Grand Prix, for the watch with the famous name, the Royal Oak Self-winding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin in platinum and titanium. The watch wins the prize because Audemars Piguet has succeeded in packing a highly advanced perpetual calendar into a very beautiful watch that is just 6 mm thick (and 41 mm wide, but that is less unusual). The jury’s special award goes to Luc Pettavino for his charity project Only Watch. This is a biennial auction where watch brands donate a unique watch to an auction from which 99% of the profits go to research into muscular dystrophy. Pettavino’s own son died from the disease last year, and he seems quite humble as he gets the evening’s only standing ovation. It is well earned, as the following weekend his auction at the Hotel des Bergues in Geneva collects just over EUR 35 million for the charity.

6M B&F won the prize for the best ladies’ watch with complication. Price: around DKK 800,000.

Katch One has just received the year’s prestigious EISA Award for Best TV Audio System. Available in three colours at DKK 5,499.

Although DALI calls it a soundbar, it’s actually a complete music system that you can use with your smartphone and other audio sources.

BRINGING GOOD SOUND BACK TO THE LIVING ROOM By Kåre Peitersen

Danish DALI is on a mission to bring great sound experiences back into the living room. Katch One is their latest offering – a soundbar that both expands the TV experience and acts as a music system.

Something paradoxical has happened to the general soundscape in recent years. As the technology has become better, smaller and less expensive, the sound experience with the vast majority of televisions has become worse. Why? Because a flat screen has to be as thin and minimalist as possible. As a result the speakers are typically very small and mounted on the back of the screen, which inevitably means poor sound quality, explains Lars Worre, managing director of the Danish speaker manufacturer DALI: “You can’t bend the laws of nature. Speakers need to have a certain physical size to deliver the low frequencies, and they should point forward towards the listener in order to reproduce a large and nuanced acoustic image. They also require a certain physical power, which is another thing that has been drastically under-prioritised in most modern flat-screen TVs.” Everyone can hear the difference between good and bad sound Lars Worre has been working with acoustics, psychoacoustics and audio products for more than 30 years, and he wonders why so many consumers put up with poor sound – because although it is very often on their flat screens that people watch films and TV shows, listen to Spotify, play with their PlayStations and much more, the sound dimension is rarely given a high priority. “Many people have almost an established prejudice

64 Advertising supplement · Sponsored content

about their own senses and don’t think they can hear the difference between good and bad speakers. But in fact, the vast majority can easily tell when something sounds good or bad, once they experience it.” A soundbar is a durable solution However, it is relatively easy to get better sound in your living room. With an external soundbar, you can lift the sound experiences delivered by your flat screen to a whole new level. DALI has therefore developed the new Katch One as a potent and flexible companion for all types of television. In fact it’s a complete music system that can be used with all your other audio sources – smartphone via Bluetooth, and a CD player or even a record player via cables. “We have created a modern and minimalist sound system that can be displayed and mounted on the wall. The design is independent of the width or design of your flat screen, and with its many connectivity options, we expect Katch One to survive several generations of flat-screen TVs. For many people, this is the perfect installation for the kitchen-living room or summer cottage. And it can easily provide the soundtrack for a party,” says Lars Worre. DALI Katch One is available at Hi-Fi Club and elsewhere. For more information, see: www.dali.dk
