Sustainability in the Rainforest A four-week Sustainability Program in Brazil The Federal Technical Institutes of Southeastern Minas Gerais, Brazil is delighted to announce our next program of scientific exchange for college students scheduled to run from September 29-October 24th 2014. As part of the program 100K Strong in the Americas, the program is funded by the US Department of State through Partners of the Americas. Together with the Iracambi Rainforest Research Center and the Sustainable Communities Institute of Muncie, Indiana, this course is part of a year-long program of student exchanges with the goal of expanding opportunities for US and Brazilian students to live, study and do practical internships together in the fields of biodiversity conservation, agro-ecology and sustainable environmental management. Each course will carry a workload of 160 hours, over 4 weeks. Graduating students will receive a certificate issued by the Federal Technical Institute - one of the official organizations of the Brazilian Ministry of Education. GENERAL INFORMATION When? Where? PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Week One: US students arrive at the Iracambi Rainforest Research Center and spend their first week studying the challenges of sustainability and biodiversity conservation in one of the world’s top biodiversity conservation areas. They will also acquire some familiarity with Portuguese. Course content will include biodiversity conservation, organic agricultural production and trekking through the Pico da Graminha forest reserve. Week Two: Students from IFET will arrive on the Iracambi campus to live, study, and carry out their internships alongside their US counterparts. Workload each week will be eight hours daily, to include classroom instruction and the maximum possible time spent outside the classroom. Course content will include monitoring of fauna and flora, bioconstruction, agro-ecology in action, and studying, harvesting and sampling the fruit of the açai jussara palm. There will also be a workshop delivered by the Sustainable Communities Institute during which students will be challenged to consider their concepts of sustainability and decide how they can put their skills to work. Week Three: International and Brazilian students will transfer together to the IFET campus at Rio Pomba where they will study different aspects of agro-ecology, restoration ecology, and intercultural communication. During the course of being exposed to different ways of studying and learning, students will work in pairs (one international and one Brazilian student,) to prepare a joint study/action project to be completed and presented by the end of the course. Week Four: Students will return to their respective campuses to collate their findings, reflect on and evaluate their learning experiences, and present, together with their international study partners, the initiative, research project or action that they have developed together.
