Proposed changes to our organization: Media Presentation by Alejandro Maya Productions explained how he could help us to increase our visibility throughout the state and the communities we serve. We will need to seek a short term grant to accomplish this project. Volunteers needed for this project.

Mexico Chapters: We need to recapture and support the Mexican Chapters. Mr. Jose Luna, Alamo Community Colleges will explore the possibility of joining efforts with the Technological Universities in Mexico. We want to get to know those in Mexico and for them to know us to accomplish our goals and missions to serve, connect and change lives. We will encourage face to face visits with our five chapters: Tamaulipas, Guerrero, Nuevo Leon, Guanajuato and Veracruz. We want to work with all chapters in the United States and Mexico to bring projects to a successful conclusion without duplication of efforts and resources. Partners is taking a new step, our headquarters, Washington D. C. will start the new uploading system to recharging process to their new media system which will allow us to multiple our network, to extend our Partnerships to connect individuals, volunteers, institutions and businesses . Our cultural awareness, respect and camaraderie will allow us accomplish our purposes with a gladiolus and contagious efforts in the global hemisphere.

Dear Partners Chapter Leaders : As President Steve Vetter mentioned in his previous message on August 28th, PartnersConnect is an exciting initiative that will provide new opportunities and benefits to our chapters, volunteers, and affiliates. In order for this initiative to reach its fullest potential, we need your involvement and support.

Starting on October 15th, Partners will begin the process of our 2012 Rechartering, a board-­‐ mandated process which is vital to helping us better understand the size, focus, and needs of the Partners Network. We will use the information we gather to continue to enrich the new PartnersConnect initiative. The deadline to recharter is November 15th.

Standard Requirements: 4. Dues: Please pay 2013 dues at the time you recharter. Also, ensure that your chapter is up-­‐to-­‐date on any past membership dues.

5. Membership Lists: Provide an Excel document that lists all chapter members/ collaborating individuals by name, email, and type (ex: student, family, individual, senior member). Please also list any other organizations that are affiliated with your chapter and describe how they are affiliated (ex: donor, supporter, host organization, etc.)

6. Annual or Bi-­‐Annual Plan: Develop a plan describing the local or joint activities that your chapter and counterpart work on together. If your chapter has no counterpart, then only list local activities.

Events 2012-­‐2013

Texas-­‐ Tacna-­‐ Peru Political Leadership Training Program.

Contact: Major of Tacna, Peru st October 31 through November 10 Two students and one mentor from Tacna, Peru will be coming to Texas to take part in a political leadership training program. During the training period, the general election for president of the United States and political offices will take place. This will give them the opportunity to observe last minute campaigning, the election results and post-­‐ election reactions. In addition, they will meet with representatives from local public offices and organizations in San Antonio. As a young political leaders, their time in San Antonio will provide them with an excellent background in the political processes in the United States which will prove to be very beneficial to them when they return to Peru.

Texas-­‐ Juarez: Training in Emergency Medical Services

A group of 20 young students and two mentors will be coming to San Antonio, Texas on January 18, 2013. Three days of intensive training will take place January 19 ʹ 21 in emergency medical services, focusing on treatment of trauma. All training materials and activities will be in Spanish. They will receive instruction in the use of backboards, c-­‐collars, traction splints, airways, oxygen regulators, head blocks, IV supplies, and tourniquets. This training will use manikins that have been developed to simulate real-­‐life situations. The personnel involved in the training have provided similar services to a large number of first responders in the United States. They are certified trainers who will ensure they will receive the latest knowledge of emergency medical services. They will return to Mexico with the trauma supplies and written training materials in order to pass your knowledge to other first responders in the area. They will return to Mexico on January 22.

Texas ʹ UDEM-­‐ Monterrey Mexico : Introduction to Volunteerism and Servant Leadership.

Date: February 28 ʹ March 10, 2013.

A group of 5 students and a mentor will arrive in Texas February th 28 and will depart March 10 . They will stay with host families and participate in a number of activities including a high school visit, a fund raising event (for Texas Partners) and cultural experiences. The main focus of this training is chronic illness in children. As part of the training sessions, they will learn about volunteerism, how to start a project, and various organizations in the United States including Make a Wish, Locks of Love, Food Bank, Ronald Mc Donald House, visiting a Hospital and Meeting with an Oncology Physician. We are looking for host families, preferably with high school students, for these students. Contact Iliana Diaz or Patty Garza for more information.

Texas-­‐Perú (Lima-­‐Chiclayo-­‐Vina Vieja) Youth in Action: A Volunteer and Cultural Exchange -­‐ June 2012 Special thanks to: Peru Partners, Harry Wing; ICPNA, Claudia Vargas Doig; our families in Chiclayo and Vina Vieja. Dr. Lyda Arevalo, Patricia Garza, Dr. Carol Fimmen, Dr. David Beveridge.

The recent inaugural trip to Peru from 9 to 28 June 2012 blended the abilities, talents and ideas of 18 youth from a variety of backgrounds. It showed what can be accomplished when people work together for a common cause. Despite language, educational and other cultural differences, the accomplishment of our goals on the trip to Peru was a wonderful testament of the strength and selflessness of the human spirit.

American youth departed from San Antonio Texas on a journey to Vina Vieja, Peru. This Peruvian city was hit by an earthquake in 2007 which caused extreme devastation. The city is being rebuilt through the efforts of the Partners of the Americas, Texas Chapter. So far, the school was repaired, a library added, a community kitchen was built to aid in feeding the population, and a clinic was made operational. The youth from the United States had specific goals in mind when this trip was planned: to update and add to the playground, teach CPR to the local youths, interact through sports and other activities with the local youth and work on leadership projects All of these goals were accomplished. For their cultural enrichment, the youth went to museum, universities.

Texas Partners of the Americas, Texas-­‐Peru Relief Fund, Operacion Sonrisa Peru, and St. David‟s School of Nursing made possible this life changing ĞdžƉĞƌŝĞŶĐĞ͘͟ Take from:

http://www.nursing.txstate.edu/about-­‐nursing-­‐school/nursing-­‐news/Peru-­‐Trip.html From May 14-­‐30, 2012, Dr. Lyda Arevalo-­‐Flechas, Assistant Professor, and five nursing students traveled to Peru to join a ǀŽůƵŶƚĞĞƌ ŐƌŽƵƉ ƐƵƉƉŽƌƚŝŶŐ ͞KƉĞƌĂƚŝŽŶ ^ŵŝůĞ /ŶƚĞƌŶĂƚŝŽŶĂů͟ ŝŶ >ŝŵĂ This organization performs cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries for children worldwide. Students Meghann Seal, Melody Bing-­‐ham, Amanda Bazan, Whitney Milburn and El Burley were able to participate in the admission, screening and attention of over one hundred and sixty children admitted for cleft lip and palate surgery.

Ms. ^ĞĂů ƐĂŝĚ ͞/ƚ ǁĂƐ ŚĞĂƌƚǁĂƌŵŝŶŐ ƚŽ ƐĞĞ ŚŽǁ Ă ůŝƚƚůĞ ǀŽůƵŶƚĞĞƌŝŶŐ of our time changed some of these families‟ lives foreverͶeveryone deserves a chance to ƐŵŝůĞ͘͟ DƐ͘ ƵƌůĞLJ ĂĚĚĞĚ ƚŚĂƚ ͙͞ ĨƚĞƌ ŽŶĞ ĚĂLJ ǁŽƌŬŝŶŐ ǁŝƚŚ ƚŚŝƐ ŽƌŐĂŶŝnjĂƚŝŽŶ ĂŶĚ ƚŚĞ community, it chanŐĞĚ ŵLJ ƉĞƌƐƉĞĐƚŝǀĞ ĂŶĚ ƌĞŝŶĨŽƌĐĞĚ ŵLJ ůŽǀĞ ĨŽƌ ŚƵŵĂŶŝƚĂƌŝĂŶ ĂŝĚ͘͟ Dr. Eduardo Lescano facilitated the opportunity for the students to rotate to the operating room under Dr. Arevalo-­‐Flechas‟ supervision. They were able to practice OR circulating skills learned prior to this trip, as well as participate in patient care in the PACU and the Post-­‐Op Unit.

In Viña Vieja the students were exposed to the reality of living conditions in rural Peru in an area devastated by earthquakes in 2007.

The students reorganized the pharmacy, disposed of all expired medications, provided blood pressure and glucose screening, well-­‐ baby exams, and trained over 20 youth in lay CPR procedures. Ms. ŝŶŐŚĂŵ ŶŽƚĞĚ ƚŚĂƚ ƚŚĞ WZ ĐůĂƐƐ ǁĂƐ ŚĞƌ ĨĂǀŽƌŝƚĞ ͙͞ ďĞĐĂƵƐĞ ŝƚ ǁĂƐ amazing to see adolescents and children demonstrate CPR, knowing that this education could save someone͛Ɛ ůŝĨĞ͘͟ /Ŷ ĂĚĚŝƚŝŽŶ͕ ŽƵƌ ŶƵƌƐŝŶŐ ƐƚƵĚĞŶƚƐ ǁĞƌĞ Ă ƉĂƌƚ ŽĨ the first inter-­‐professional team of health professions students. They were joined by three dental school students from the Cayetano Heredia University.

Together they provided fluoridation treatments for over 45 people, the vast majority children. While nursing students learned about dental examination and fluoridation, they taught dental students how to draw blood samples, take blood pres-­‐ sures, and use glucometers.

The students were provided a complete cultural and linguistic immersion. The community of Viña Vieja and Mr. Lucas E. Queirolo embraced the students as ĨĂŵŝůLJ͘ DƐ͘ ĂnjĂŶ ĂĚĚĞĚ͕ ͞WĞƌƵ ǁĂƐ ĂŶ ĂďƐŽůƵƚĞůLJ amazing and humbling experience with exposure to different types of health-­‐care in other countries. The people of Peru are truly what made this a ŵĞŵŽƌĂďůĞ ĞdžƉĞƌŝĞŶĐĞ͘͟ Dr. Arevalo-­‐&ůĞĐŚĂƐ ƉƌĂŝƐĞĚ ŚĞƌ ƐƚƵĚĞŶƚƐ͕ ƐĂLJŝŶŐ ͞DLJ WĞƌƵ ϮϬϭϮ ĐƌĞǁ is a team St. David‟s can be proud ofͶI know I am. It was my privilege to guide the learning of the students who so generously followed me to serve in Peru.

These future nursing colleagues will be the ones providing care and leading teams in the future.

Texas-­‐ Vina Vieja -­‐Peru : Engineering Without Borders UTSA, Student Chapter: Water System Project Phase I is water distribution and Phase II will be structural improvements to the community (i.e. housing ) taken from: http://www.ewb-­‐utsa.org/1/post/2012/04/assessment-­‐trip-­‐2012.

EWB-­‐UTSA chapter has been on the University of Texas at San Antonio campus for about five years and is currently working on a project in Viña Vieja, Peru. The Chapter consists of students from multiple disciplines (mechanical, civil, finance, and geology), two mentors, and a Faculty Advisor. (Click here to see who all is involved) The Students in this chapter are involved in design, fundraising, and outreach (with guidance from the Faculty Advisor, two mentors, and College of Engineering-­‐UTSA).

The project has two phases: Phase I is water distribution and Phase II will be structural improvements to the community (i.e. housing). The EWB-­‐UTSA Chapter has visited the 5

EWB-­‐ Visit March 2012 Recently a team of three students and one professor returned to good ole UTSA from an Assessment trip in Viña Vieja, Peru. This assessment trip was very successful in gaining crucial information for the planning of a water system and letting the community know that we are here to help them with what they need. It was a trip that was eight days long with 6 of those days being in the community.

Since the return of the trip there has been great progress in the design of the water system since the plan of EWB-­‐UTSA is to have an Implementation trip either at the end of the summer, August, or the end of the year, December.

3rd Convención: Compañeros Conectando Capítulos Febrero 9 ʹ 11, 2012

The Texas Chapter has partners in Peru and Mexico. We invited representatives from each chapter to attend a conference in San Antonio on February 10 and 11. We discussed Partners in transformation, the future of Partners, 911 projects, youth leadership programs, and communication and collaboration. Also we were devoted to the development of specific projects for implementation.

Several years ago, chapters, volunteers, outside organizations and Partners of the Americas as a whole began to re-­‐engage the US-­‐DĞdžŝĐŽ ƌĞůĂƚŝŽŶƐŚŝƉ ĂŶĚ WĂƌƚŶĞƌƐ ŽĨ ƚŚĞ ŵĞƌŝĐĂƐ͛ ƌŽůĞ ŝŶ ŝƚ͘ A series of meetings, projects and dialogues have advanced this discussion, and new programs ʹ small and large ʹ have even begun in this short time. By working both within and outside our existing network, Partners has engaged in enriching dialogues about the nature of Partners in Transformation in order to build a financially sustainable, larger, stronger and more accountable and impactful network. Where have we been, where are we now, and where do we need to go in order to accomplish our ambitious goals?

CHASKIS 8K RUN/ 5K WALK and Peruvian Festival laces up for good cause Helotes, TX-­‐ Participants at the Fifth Annual Chaskis 8K Run/ 5k Walk and Peruvian Festival in Helotes, Texas laced up their running shoes to help those in the rebuilding process after an earthquake struck the community of Vina Vieja, near Lima, Peru. At the forefront of these efforts were the Texas-­‐Peru

Partners Relief Funds and their parent organization, Partners of the Americas. He race was held on March 3, 2012.

The Peruvian Festival that accompanied the mini-­‐marathon featured live music, folklore dancing, PeruǀŝĂŶ ĨŽŽĚ ďLJ ZŽĐŽƚŽ͛Ɛ͕ ĂŶĚ ĞǀĞŶ Wepe the llama, who posed for more than his share of photos with crowd.

Please save the date for our 6th annual CHASKIS 8KRUN and 5KWALK to be held the first Saturday in March 2013. (March 2nd) 2013). The race is always held with Helotes/Market Day so plan to stay and spend a relaxing day in Helotes, Texas.
