//IBIZA SWINGING ISLAND The season is in full swing and almost all parties are going well. The clubs are packed and Ibiza has proved that this place is unique for people who want to have fun. Despite the crisis and depression – what we are born for is entertainment, vacation and variety. In these days maybe some will not go and buy a new car or a new villa, but especially in the hard time people need their time out and relax, so it's a natural thing that even in unpleasant times no one wants to miss a holiday. Interestingly to see that by changing the opening times of the clubs, which now must close at 6:00, the rhythm of going out has changed as well. Especially for the popular and most expensive parties like Cocoon or Fuck Me I'm Famous people are coming earlier to the club in order not to miss anything. As we all know, the time on a good party is flying. So it happens that already at midnight long queues in front of the entrance can be seen. The club managers might be delighted with this development, less the owners of smaller bars and restaurants, because people tend not to stay at these places that long as they used to before. Another problem for the bars and restaurants in Eivissa Town comes with the extremely bad parking situation. Locals and visitors are really pissed about that. Understandably, because holiday makers, who have only a few days to enjoy their stay, are losing 45 minutes or more, just because there is no parking space. So not only the times of going out have changed, also the areas where the people go have shifted. With the parking problems in the city, many people prefer to have dinner and drinks at Talamanca or Marina Botafoch where the parking situation is less chaotic or go straight to Bossa beach to spend their time in one of the new beautiful sea side locations.

GOOD NEWS FOR PARTY LOVERS The quality of the nightlife especially this year has improved further, and the old structures of the clubbing landscape are broken up. So this year there are some really nice new clubs: Boho in San Antonio, Le Masque at Playa d'en Bossa, and other clubs which are putting increased effort into their nights (Martina in Playa d'en Bossa, Summum in Port des Torrent, Somni in Figueretas). Everywhere pop out new projects and new promoters are bringing a fresh swing to the White Isle. Especially the new clubs are interesting for those who are not into spending 12 Euros on a bottle of beer (Pacha) or 15 Euros on a Hierbas con hielo (Amnesia).

NICE TO SEE THAT IBIZA HAS A NEW DYNAMIC A very innovative and simple drink price policy El Divino introduced this season: All drinks cost only 5 Euros. This is not a joke! You can buy as many drink tickets as you want at the entrance, and it's amazing - even Vodka Red Bull costs only 5 Euros. This is less of what one water costs in some other discotheques! Congratulations for this clever step. El Divino now has the lowest drink prices of any club in the island. The management understood how the global crisis is hitting the spending power of this year's visitors. Ibiza is still perceived by many to be an overpriced destination, particularly the night clubs are seen to be too expensive. El Divino's new drink price policy breaks this reality and gets in line with the general policy of other businesses in Ibiza which are already moving into a more understanding position of what is to be done. Ibiza needs a change of attitude, and must abandon the policy of high prices, because other destinations and resorts in Europe (Turkey, Croatia, Bulgaria, etc ...) have been faster to react to the crisis and its damaging effect on tourism. Enjoy your drinks, and don’t forget one thing: The Spanish police guys are friendly, but very strict this year, and hardly speak your language, so we really recommend taking the bus, a taxi, bicycle or private VIP driver to the club instead the car when you have drunk. Already a 25 millilitres alcohol level (two glasses of white wine) can cause you a lot of trouble. Viva Ibiza, bailamos!

Do you think Ibiza is a special place? How would you describe the island to someone who has never been here before? I think Ibiza is one of the most special places in Europe. This is why my wife and I decided to buy a place here. I love the way everybody is so laidback and how they enjoy life. I feel that the air in Ibiza is different; it kind of charms and relaxes you. There is so much nature around you and the beaches are amazing. When I arrive at my home here from Miami, I instantly feel like I’ve left all of my worries behind and I can enjoy life much more. When did you come to Ibiza for the first time, what was the thing you liked most, and what is making you come back here since then? I came to Ibiza for the first time in 1999 to play at the Amnesia terrace on Cocoon night. My wife and I came together and decided to make a mini vacation of it. We stayed at the Na Xamena hotel and the experience was great. Of course, what I loved the most as a DJ was the club scene - so many good clubs with so many great DJ’s playing. It was and is DJ heaven.

10 PARTYSAN IBIZA AUG#09

Do you think Ibiza is a musical and cultural phenomenon in the world, and if so, why? I do believe Ibiza is definitely a musical phenomenon for electronic music. It never ceases to amaze me how thousands of people flock to the island every summer with the main puarpose of going to the clubs and listening to their favorite DJ’s spin. You do not see that anywhere else in the world. Ibiza is the most important platform for international DJ’s. If you make it here you can make it anywhere. If you see it from a global perspective, do you have the impression that the people from the different countries - or continents have different perceptions of Ibiza? For three years now, I have been able to experience the island’s other side that excludes the club nightlife. My wife and I move here for 4 to 5 months a year and we experience a normal life. The island is amazing and has a lot to offer besides clubbing. I think people around the world generally have the idea that Ibiza is only a crazy party island. That is because usually the packages being sold by travel agencies are geared towards young clubbers. I wish more people knew how great this place is.

How would you define Ibiza’s position in the world of dance music? As I mentioned before, Ibiza is the most important platform for international DJ’s, period. Many of the songs that are played in the clubs become radio hits worldwide in the fall and winter. Miami and Ibiza – the two world capitals of dance music and you are spending a lot of time in both of them, can they be compared with each other? As a promoter, I can tell you that Miami and Ibiza are completely different. The politics are two worlds apart. As a DJ, I could say that the feedback is very similar, even though in Miami they dance their butts off. How does Ibiza influence your work as a musician, artist and producer? When I work on music is Ibiza it is very different from making music in Miami. The atmoshere is relaxing so I tend to take more time to produce music. I produced my last two original albums in Ibiza then finalized them in Miami. Representing your record label Juicy Music, what can we expect this summer from your residency at Privilege? My parties will be all about Juicy Music and guests that represent the tough and sexy house music that my label releases. There will be loads of energy and excitement, especially when I play! No boring or minimal music at my parties. We like to show the fans new music as well as classics with some commercial tunes that we all love. Privilege was missing a night like this and Juicy is here to provide it! Please tell us more about the musical concept of the record label! It is very simple. All DJ’s need tracks to make the night memorable. We deliver those types of tracks. We are very different than other labels that release monotonous grooves that don’t provide the smiles and the hands in the air effect. We only release that kind of music and also we like to release vocal songs that can crossover to radio. A perfect example is my Juicy Ibiza 2009 mix compilation which is out both in stores and online. What’s on your studio agenda, on which productions you are working right now? In the last few weeks I have remixed songs for Basement Jaxx, BT, Nelly Furtado, Fonzerelli and more. I also finished my new artist album that will be released in October. The first single called “Closer To The Sun” has just been released.

When did you start promoting parties in Ibiza, and how has the Juicy concept in Ibiza developed throughout the years? I started three years ago doing the Sunday Terrace at Amnesia together with the Espuma party. It was amazing and I will never forget the great times I had there. We do Juicy events in different cities and we do a lot of promotions. I am really excited on starting a new night Tuesdays at Privilege. What was the reason for you to bring the party this season from Sunday’s Amnesia to Tuesdays at Privilege? We wanted to have a full Juicy night, not a shared night with another event like we had at Amnesia. I also love playing in huge rooms with new lighting system, big visuals and the Funktion One sound that I love. So what’s the special juicy experience on Tuesday nights in Ibiza 2009? Get ready to be taken on a rollercoaster ride of pounding, sexy and uplifting house music. Every track that I play will have screen projections linked to them so it will be a visual experience as well. Thank you very much!

Nima Gorji was born in Teheran (Iran) in 1972, and his interest for music started when he was a kid, travelling with his father, a live musician. As a teenager Nima and his family had to run away from the country, stayed as refugees in Germany for two years before they moved to Denmark. Here begins a new time for Nima, concentrating on his studies at a music school, playing in a live band, discovering the piano and synthesizers.

Do you think the behaviour of going out in Ibiza has changed in a way since last year? How do the party people adopt to the new rythm? Sure, the island has changed and therefore the people are going out differently, some places have to close earlier then they used to, so people are not staying at restaurants or bars until 2 or 3 in the night as they did before.

// HAPPY BIRTHDAY SPACE!

Space is an unmistakable symbol of the identity of Ibiza. The club opened in 1989 in Playa d’en Bossa and only three years later it was known around the world. Founder Pepe Roselló gave the people the opportunity to dance under the sun. This was something totally new at that moment and people went mad. It was the time when the after-hours started to grow up all around Europe. Space was giving the island a completely new concept: dancing in the daylight! From that moment, Space became the most famous club terrace in the world. Back in 1989, Space had brought to Ibiza the sound that was being championed at that time in London and DJ’s came along such as Alex P and Brandon Block, who started the legendary Sundays at Space. The club was a real phenomenon and pioneering the era of the after-hours. At that time (late 80’s and early 90’s), the price to enter the club was 2.500 Pesetas from Monday to Friday and 3.000 Pesetas on the weekend. Not too much if you think of how many really important artists have been djing at Space Ibiza during the last 20 years and still do – some of the best DJ’s of the world of any genre of modern dance music. With the new laws for opening hours in Ibiza which the government established last year to ban daytime partying, Space had to go through a process of creative re-orientation. The result is a fresh and innovative approach to present new party concepts for high quality night-time events such as “Be” on Thursdays. Those looking for the daytime experience on the legendary open Space terrace should check out Sundays, still the busiest day at the club, and starting in the afternoon at 16:30. Attitude, vision, creativity, and most importantly, music have guided the development of the club. Its six rooms (with an amazing sound system by Funktion One) cover all aspects of electronic music, provided by the most prominent DJ’s on the planet. Amongst many other awards Space Ibiza was chosen “Best Global Club” in 2005 and 2006 at the Winter Music Conference held in Miami. When we closed this issue of PARTYSAN Ibiza Magazine the line-up for the anniversary party was still kept in secret. We are sure it will be amazing so watch out for Space posters and flyers and get your tickets right in time!

//JOIN OUR REVOLUTION

JUST DaNcE

Is it time for another revolution? Indeed! According to the dictionary, revolution is the word for a “complete change” or a “great reversal of conditions”, nothing less than a “fundamental reconstruction”. So let’s join Carl Cox this summer when he kicks off on Tuesdays at Space his “Join our revolution” parties. The Carl Cox at Space revolution has been in motion for some years now through completely diverse line-ups, presenting DJ’s of different genres, the best in their field CARL COX working the same dance-floor at Space. Proof that this concept works has been seen through the night being one of the most consistently busy on the Island. Marking a change in direction from traditional Ibiza line-ups, Carl and his guests have always strived to break down musical barriers and present a new way of thinking about DJ talent, production and lighting. There are still the big names but this year, for the first time, there is extra emphasis on new talent, with new DJ’s, new music and new production. Lynn Cosgrave of Safehouse Management is right to point out: “If we don’t push new talent what happens in five years time? We have to embrace and support the best of the new breed”. CARL COX AND GUESTS EVERY TUESDAY FROM 21:00 AT SPACE.

//TRACK OF THE MONTH:

HOLD HOME BY SANTOS

Sometimes there are tracks which cause quite a stir long before their release date, and “Hold Home“ by the Italian producer Santos is one such track. For almost a year now “Hold Home” has been causing mayhem in the sets of DJ’s like Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos, Loco Dice and Timo Maas, and now the track is being finally and officially released by Moon Harbour. Santos is a DJ, producer and remixer. With “Camels“ he had released an international chart-hit at the end of the 90’s, and remixes and productions for famous stars like Madonna and Fat Boy Slim show that his artistic spectrum goes far beyond electronic club music. Since 2008 he has been assisting Timo Maas as a producer, in addition to running the Mutant Clan project together. “Hold Home“ is a really cool classic house track – elegant, hypnotic and timeless, and with it Santos perfectly heralds the beginning of the summer season. The track is based on a short sample-loop of beats, chords and a distinctive vocal sample, and the fact that it needs nothing more than this is testament to Santos' keen sense for the dance-floor.

//THE NIGHTS OF THE KNIGHT Toolroom Records have just celebrated their 100th release with Mark Knight remixing Faithless' “Music matters”. Now the label presents a new double CD compilation album “Toolroom Knights”, mixed by Knight himself, which is less about Stealth but rather a full-on frontal attack that will hammer through any previous boundaries you may have created for the Toolroom Records’ chief. The album is a genre-busting feast of electronic music that refuses to be pigeonholed and is sourced from the deepest and most obscure corners of Mark’s own personal tool room. With sweet summery vibes, infectious horns, peak-time tech house and twisted military funk the mix album is representing the full breadth of the dance music spectrum. Knight is entering the deep house territory and industrial techno throb - Tiger Stripes style - and uses pulsating loops from Bedrock Boys, Digweed and Muir. The finale of the mix on CD2 sees the mighty “Music matters”.

Dear Space,

my face. I have had so many parties there and they all were great. My personal alltime Hierbas record was on a rainy Sunday with 56 Hierbas in eight hours. Friends have found me on your parking lot, sleeping behind a car. It was in 1997 when also a new hit came out. After this incidence at Space everybody in my country was singing Armand Van Helden’s all time classic „You do not know me“ with a German translation that was now „Wo liegt der Novy? Er liegt besoffen vor dem Space” (in English this Our relationship has been always unique. We means something like “Where is the Novy? were equally in love with each other. GURU JOSH

Playa d’en Bossa is one area in Ibiza that seems to be experiencing a mighty rebirth this summer, with a number of new venues opening their doors to a switched on public, perhaps a sign that it’s truly time for something different. And so, with all these changes, comes a brand new club right in the heart of Playa d’en Bossa: Le Masque. With four areas it offers space for 2,500 party people. Whilst the venue itself has been in existence for many years (previously Kiss, Love, Diva), it’s only now, under new ownership, that it has had a total revamp under the hand of interior designer Carol Renner. The main room boasts a Rill laser light show, an amazing LED lighting system illuminates the middle room and the roof terrace chill-out makeover adds yet another dimension to the club as a whole. The 4th area - the Masquerade bar - has been transformed into a vanguard terrace and opens every evening from 19:00h. Le Masque is a truly international musical affair with a wide range of artists and series of club nights. The club is powered by DJ line-ups that accent a way of high quality clubbing – and at reasonable prices.

Some of the party highlights at Le Masque this season come with dance hit-seller Guru Josh - the man behind the triple platinum “Infinity” and “Infinity 2008”. This track is officially the “biggest selling dance single of all time” with over 3 million singles, 40 remixes and 120 compilations. Living and working in Ibiza for the last ten years, Paul Walden (which is Guru Josh’s real name), together with producer Keith Holden is presenting his new live multimedia musical show “Infinity & Beyond” at Le Masque. Paul Walden is a pioneering and iconic figure in the dance music industry. Primarily as a musician but also as a promoter, artist, designer and entrepreneur, he has been involved in the music business since the early 1980’s. His work with “The Guru Josh Project” has raised his current profile to new levels. Signed to Big City Beats in 2007 and consisting of Guru Josh, Snakebyte and Darren Bailie, “The Guru Josh Project” is currently riding a wave of success. GURU JOSH IS PLAYING ON 12TH AND 26TH AUGUST, 9TH AND 23RD SEPTEMBER AT LE MASQUE. www.gurujoshproject.com www.lemasque.es PARTYSAN IBIZA AUG#09 51

// SOUND OF THE iSlE //SEAMUS HAJI SAVES YOUR LIFE There is a distinct possibility that the name Seamus Haji may already be familiar to you. His name derives from his Irish-Indian roots and his career as a DJ began at the tender age of 16 in London, playing a mixture of early house, soul and hip-hop. With a barrel-full of drive, enthusiasm and determination he went on to secure his first residencies and then became a regular fixture in the UK’s capitol. In the meantime he has also enjoyed numerous residencies around the globe, including four years at Pacha where he gathered an army of international fans. Musically his strength is his diversity and his sets are known for the wealth of his own productions and remixes. Then came “Last night a DJ saved my life”. Seamus released the cover of the 80’s club classic under his own name in 2004, he was the first to produce a vocal record in the now ubiquitous electro-house style, and its huge popularity sowed the seeds for this future hit. 2007 kicked off with the standout remake of the track, being signed to Apollo and going Top 15 in the UK National Charts. Most recently he has given his remix touch to The Ting Tings’ “Shut up and let me go”, Mariah Carey’s “Touch my body”, Rihanna’s “Take a bow” and Moby’s “I like to move in here”. He has just completed the new Haji & Emanuel single “The Pressure” featuring Beverley Knight and Bryan Chambers – a spinetingling, goose bumping cover of the Sound of Blackness epic – set for release early autumn. SEAMUS HAJI IS PLAYING ON FRIDAY, 21ST AUGUST AT FIERCE ANGEL, EL DIVINO. www.myspace.com/ djseamushaji www.thefutureisfierce.com

//SYSTEM OF SURVIVAL Last year, DC10 close down, this years is the second year of closure. How did this affect you, what are you thinking about these restrictions? It is a strange situation, our most important place to play and the best party for us got lost. It was a very important party for the locals, over the years it became more popular but it never lost its special vibe. So it was a hit in the face for everyone - artists, owners and the audience. How are you feeling this year, has the vibe become fully relieved? For us especially nothing changed because DC10 is still closed, and we still don’t know how it’s going to be next near and so on. We have some locations to play this summer, but not as residents, we are just coming to play as guests. So which are the places you are playing on the island this summer? We just hosted a party for our new record label Ianus71 at the Channel Zoo in San Antonio and now we will play at the Zoo Project on Saturday, 15th of August. Also we are going to play at Underground but we have no fixed dates yet. We have a regular day in Delano; we always play there on Thursdays during and invite some friends to play with us. And how would you describe your sound? Deep, funk. Full of soul. Playa d´en Bossa has loads of new beach clubs this summer. Do you like how this area has developed? Which is your favourite place to have a drink? Yes, over the past years it was a very commercial place for the tourists and especially for very young people. Last year the bars in town got restrictions and so people tend to shift to the new beach clubs. Now, after the opening of these bars, the place has changed, the beach is very clean, the bars offer a wide range of special parties apart from the big clubs. People can have a drink, dinner and stay on the beach to enjoy early night dancing with the best local and international DJ’s playing there. Our favourite place to spend the day and evenings is Delano, because we’re playing there and it’s a nice little club and a meeting point for friends and local DJ’s. Ushuaia is a very good place to go to daytime parties in the late afternoon, great view and the dunes around.

SYSTEM OF SURVIVAL Upcoming releases in progress? We are working in the studio and hosting parties for our new label in London. In Switzerland we are playing for a party of Circo Loco with Luciano, Dan Ghenacia and Mirko Loko. Circo Loco is closed but we’re not getting bored. Our next release will be out on our label Ianus71 soon and is called Courtney’s Dawn. Thank you very much!

SYSTEM OF SURVIVAL ARE PLAYING AT DELANO, PLAYA D’EN BOSSA, EVERY THURSDAY FROM 18:00, AND ON SATURDAY, 15TH AUGUST, AT THE ZOO PROJECT, GALA NIGHT. www.myspace.com/systemofsurvival Interview by Anna Steffens

// SOUND OF THE iSlE //PUT YOUR HANDS UP FOR FEDDE LE GRAND Fedde Le Grand’s production talents have been called upon by the great and the good over the past few years. With “Scared of Me” on Flamingo Recordings doing the global rounds and with “Let Me Be Real” on its way, now the label is presenting “Output” to keep taste buds moist. “Output” is the title track from Fedde Le Grand’s forthcoming debut album. A huge kick drum, a bouncing bass and a mind-bending synth – all put together in a way only Fedde knows how. The track is euphoric and summer vibes are stamped all over it. Carl Cox says the track is “some funky ass-shaking, dance-floor breaking house music at its best. It rocks!” Le Grand has spent the majority of his earlier youth grafting, spinning records and cutting tracks until the inevitable happened. “Put your hands up for Detroit” was produced in the bedroom, released 2007 by one of the biggest labels in dance, and it enabled Fedde to step out into the world of electronic dance. Fedde le Grand is bringing his insanely successful Flamingo Nights party to Pacha this summer, and it comes complete with partner Funkerman, joined by a glittering host of star DJ’s that this month include Martin Solveig, John Dahlback, Tocadisco, Moguai and many more. Weekly and for the entire season special effects and light wizards Vlight.to are turning Pacha on its head.

//CHRISTIAN SMITH MAKES YOU MOVE Christian Smith has just signed a compilation album deal with Renaissance, one of the most important and recognisable brands in the clubbing world today. Launched in 1999, the label has continued to release material with some of the highest profile artists in the industry ever since, always evolving with a forward thinking sound. The ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------first album in the series “Renaissance Presents: Christian Smith” will be released in September and his new single “Higeanopolis” will be out in October. Already last year was huge year for Christian Smith, with "Total Departure" crossing over into virtually every major DJ’s record box. This March he re-launched his seminal CHRISTIAN Tronic label with remixes of the classic “Move!”. John SMITH Digweed has signed two big new singles to his Bedrock label. Once more, Christian Smith & John Selway show they are the masters of creating tracks that seem to push dance-floors ever upwards into ecstatic mass hysteria with “Mistral” - hugely strong and big room as usual but with subtly different groove and a mysterious dark musical touch. Smith’s “Manfreak”, has been snapped up by Mauro Picotto for his Alchemy label. Although born in Sweden, Christian spent much of his youth in Frankfurt, Germany, which played an unexpected role in determining his musical tastes. Nowadays Christian is touring the globe and bringing his sound to the dance-floors of the world.

//PROFOUND PARTS OF PIER BUCCI Maruca is a new label founded by Pier Bucci, the well established Chilean producer who has taken his music to the heights of success and now decided to represent his artistic concept under his label Maruca. Pier is an open-minded and passionate traveller and throughout his life path he has been exploring the diversity of different cultures and people which has enriched his artistic approach to making music. He has gathered experiences with influences from various parts of the world and implemented them into his music. However his main reference point comes from South American traditional music with accents upon emotional vocals and fluid melodies. His productions range between highly rhythmic dancefloor tracks to more subtle and fragile songs, but all with profound sensuous aesthetic. Much has been written about the recent emergence of Chile as an unexpected source of cutting edge electronica. Pier, alongside fellow countrymen and women, are producing some of the finest and most original electronic music in the world. Pier's own take on techno uses classic Latin rhythms and vocals, with his love of abstract electronics, and Sheffield bleeps, combined with his haunting Andean melodies, whilst colourful characters zip through his music, makes a lively collage of influences, underpinned by solid dance-floor beats. //DJ AWARDS The DJ Awards have become an end-of-season tradition in Ibiza. Celebrating musical talents and productions which often are groundbreaking on the dance-floors of all the major clubs worldwide, the DJ Awards each year launch a wide selection of categories and nominees on their website. The categories reflect the evolving electronic dance music scene. The public is invited to vote for the final winners in the various categories on their homepage. Going into their 12th year, the DJ Awards are a reunion of first-range artists. Previous winners include Erick Morillo, Sven Väth, Tiësto, Paul Oakenfold, Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos, Ferry Corsten, Carl Cox and many more. In 1998 the very first DJ Awards was conceived by Jose Pascual, a legendary figure noted for organising groundbreaking events in Ibiza, and Lenny Ibizarre, a well known DJ, producer and record label owner. This year the organisers have chosen the concept of “dreams” as the theme of the DJ Awards. “Dreams are the visions of a better future. From the lucid dreaming of Tibetan monks to the mysterious dreamtime of the Australian aboriginals - dreaming has grown to become a highly sophisticated expression of our cultural heritage”. THE PUBLIC ONLINE VOTING RUNS NOW. JUST REGISTER ON THE DJ AWARDS WEBSITE AND PICK YOUR FAVOURITE ARTIST. // SOUND OF THE iSlE //THE CHANNELS OF THE ZOO PROJECT The summer heat is upon us and there is no better place then just to stay at the pool with a cool drink in your hands and some friends around you. But wait, isn’t that a bit too boring? You didn’t come to Ibiza just to chill, no? You came here because Ibiza is known for its world-famous daytime parties and the cosmopolitan mix of people, sharing their desire to listen to fantastic music and dance under the sun. Ibiza is known for its freedom and the pleasure of expressing it. Some people on the island (like for example some politicians) are threatening the freedom of Ibiza. They come up with new regulations and try to tell people when to eat, when to go out and when to sleep. Luckily, there are some other people (like for example some party promoters) who are working hard to maintain Ibiza as what is supposed to be: music, dancing and having fun! This year we are faced with an island where it became very hard to find an open-air event. Definitely the best outdoor parties this summer are organized by Lubka and Ady from the Zoo Project. They are happy that Gala Night has a licence that allows them to play music outside, and the park-like location is perfect with its pools, trees and a lot of space to hang out on a hot afternoon. Due to their success with the parties on Saturdays, this season they jumped as well on Wednesdays with a second series of events “Channel Zoo”, showcasing some of the mostrespected labels and artists to date. The Zoo Project is the kind of party that hits the right time, in the right place with most importantly the right people. This is where history is created and legends become themselves. The Zoo Project is a party that has grown organically in Ibiza, offering you a festival-like experience every Wednesday and Saturday. The best artists in the underground house and techno world are showing off their freshest music on three very different outdoor arenas plus a new indoor arena for after-parties (or if it should rain one day). All of us feel from time to time an animal instinct, and we all have a basic need for freedom. It does not matter what age, race or religion you are, everyone is free to be a human (or if you wish an animal) at the zoo in Ibiza. www.thezooproject.com

//ELLEN ALLIEN In 1997 after the closing of Berlin’s E-Werk Ellen Allien started her own party series under the guise „Bpitch Control“ with a focus on futuristic sound, light and video mixing in changing industrial locations in order to fill the gaps of Berlin’s nightlife at the time with something new. 1999 she launched the equally named record label which this year celebrates its 10th anniversary. Ten years of BPitch Control means ten years of following the idea of acting as a musical collective, based on creative exchange and communication by entering new territories. Artists like Modeselektor, Paul Kalkbrenner, Apparat, Kiki, Sascha Funke and of course BPitch founder Ellen Allien have changed the landscape of electronic music over the last decade, putting the Berlin based label firmly on the international map of electronic music, trying to push the development of electronic music with every single release. BPitch is a breeding ground for fresh talent, presenting and pushing upcoming artists from right about everywhere. While the aforementioned BPitch artists are still busy headlining the most respected clubs in the world, the next generation of BPitch producers including Thomas Müller, Chaim and Zander VT is already making their mark on the international club scene, more than keen to add new bass-heavy chapters to BPitch's diverse history.

//SANTIAGO‘S RAINBOW Serge Santiago is particularly known for his coloured vinyl reedits of classic Italo disco tracks, including Kano’s “It’s a War” and Grace Jones’ “Slave to The Rhythm”. In 2005 – after splitting from Radio Slave, the DJ duo he was part of for two years – Santiago started his own label “Arcobaleno” (meaning rainbow in Italian). His own production “Atto d’amore” was the label’s first release: “I started producing because I was clubbing so much and wanted some involvement, so, using my old computer I started to teach myself how to write beats.” After releasing “Push It” in 1999, Santiago started dj’ing also: “Dj’ing was the natural progression from producing; I made music, so I wanted to play it out”. In 2007, after playing at Space for the first time in 2006, he became resident for We Love in Ibiza and mixed the first ever We Love compilation, alongside Riton. // SOUND OF THE iSlE //FROM FRANKFURT TO MANNHEIM Sonido Records and Cecille Records are releasing their double CD album "From Frankfurt to Mannheim", mixed by Reboot and Sascha Dive. Since long ago the Rhein-Main-Neckar area in Germany has developed into a Mecca for lovers of credible house sound and continuously has implemented new drives in the movement. Since the beginning of the 90’s, especially Frankfurt has been especially known as the stronghold of techno. Now a young generation of highly creative house heads is stepping into the musical tradition of this region and labels such as Cécille, Oslo, 8Bit or La Pena are roughing up both the national and international music scene. Artists like SIS, Reboot, Nick Curly, Johnny D., Sascha Dive, Federico Molinari or Markus Fix are some of the key figures, living in the radius of 80 kilometres between Frankfurt and Mannheim and spreading their personal vision of electronic music from there all around the globe. In the course of this upward tendency, Cecille Records and Sonido have now released a compilation which is paying tribute to the unstoppable and trendy sound of the FFM/MA connection. The very special thing about "From Frankfurt to Mannheim" is that not only are Reboot and Sascha Dive from this area but also the tracks it contains have either been released on a label located there or were produced by an artist from the Rhein-Main area.

Last month the team around Max Lanfranconi celebrated the opening of the Sound Farm Studios (SFS) in the pine-clad green countryside close to San Miguel. SFS offers four individual studios for composition, post scoring and sound design, audio mastering and postproduction, 2D and 3D graphic design and video editing. On top you can get a lot of inspiration from the endless view of the horizon and the golden sunsets, giving the space tranquillity for artists and technicians. www.myspace.com/soundfarmstudiosibiza www.soundfarm-studios-ibiza.com

//UNDERGROUND Islanders’ favourite music night bar The Underground last month celebrated its 8th birthday on a Friday night with a rollicking night of amazing tunes, soaked up in an atmosphere surrounded by all the recognisable party friends. Despite the set back of earlier closing times last year, the bar has sprung back in style and is having the best summer ever with an incomparable line-up of DJ’s passing through the gates and behind the decks every week. In the words of founder Nick Fry: "It was the perfect birthday. The music was excellent, the party was great, and it really was just one of those nights. Juanito and Justin played excellently and there was the usual crew of DJ’s hanging out in the booth and just enjoying it. For me it was a moment when I reflected on all the good times we've had at The Underground, and how it's grown. Just recognising that people still really enjoy it for what it is and the fact that people appreciate what it is, that they understand what we're trying to do, and how it is different. It is something special." We couldn't agree more. Happy Birthday! words by Smac UNDERGROUND (SANT RAFAEL) IS OPEN EVERY DAY (EXCEPT SUNDAYS) FROM 23:00. THE ENTRY IS FREE AND THE NIGHTS ARE ALWAYS SPECIAL, SO JUST GO AND CHECK IT OUT! HOW TO GET THERE: Following the main road from Eivissa to San Antonio, after passing Amnesia, you will see on the left hand side a black sign with a big white “U” on it. At the next roundabout, make a U-turn and drive back a few metres, then just follow the signs to the parking. www.myspace.com/ibzunderground PARTYSAN IBIZA AUG#09 59

//MISS LUNA RAISES AND SHINES

End of this month Miss Luna is going to release her new album "Rise & Shine". “Rise & Shine is not only a simple title, for me it means to get up and present my sound to the world after so many years of working with all those fantastic people such as producer Chris Le Blanc who is now publishing the album on his label Karmaloft, singer and songwriter Q de Rhino who also did the album title song, the Balearic sounds of the Mallorca-based band Tarod and many more. They inspired me a lot and helped me to get my ideas finally manifested”, says Miss Luna who is resident DJ at Nassau beach club at Playa d’en Bossa. “Like the style I mainly play as a beach DJ, the album presents a continuous mix of deep and vocal house tracks. On the one hand it is relaxing and you can listen to the message, on the other hand I hope it will make you get up and dance”, she remarks. For Miss Luna Ibiza is still the centre of electronic music and the high concentration of high quality musicians, DJ’s, producers and electronic music lovers on the island is giving her creative input every day: “For me, the typical Ibiza magic together with that Mediterranean lifestyle is the perfect breeding ground for creating music”. You can meet India in Ibiza at Cardamom Club in the back of Santa Eulalia. For many years, it had been a dream of the owners Craig and Navine to open an Indian restaurant in Spain. Their dreams were realised when they set their eyes on the old farmhouse formerly known as “La Posada”. Built in the 1400’s in traditional Ibicenco style, the restaurant is overlooked by the beautiful church on the hill. The old stone interiors have been spiced up with Indian fabrics, throws and plush red velvet curtain. Warm summer nights may be enjoyed dining under a canopy of grape vines on the garden terrace. Cardamom Club brings together cuisine from the different regions of India. You can choose from a delicious array of dishes from the chalkboard menu or try one of the more traditional dishes. As well they are having a big selection of vegetarian food. With wines to suit every palate, attentive service and a unique, cosy, relaxing ambience the Cardamom Club will make you feel part of Craig and Navine’s dream.
