// TOP NEWS

Already the last summer was a disaster for Space because the island’s authorities, after years of ignoring the uncontrolled excesses of wild party tourism, woke up from their saturated lethargy and started their anti-fun campaign with banning the after-hours: A political blowback especially for the good old lady Space and the controversial club DC10. No more daytime parties – a still ongoing shock within the international clubbing community. Since Ibiza for most visitors means sun, means light, means daytime so that the restriction of the opening hours – applied not only on the clubs - lead to loss of clients and some of the affected venues even found themselves in serious existential problems.

Season opening is exciting with rumours flying and gossip mingling with real news. With the large number of clubs and events in Ibiza every year you can be sure to have surprises.

Just look at the old Eivissa harbour area and how many of the unique bars this year will remain closed. What a shame when we think of what important function the bars have for Ibiza nightlife. The half-baked political decision hit Space especially. So what’s new at Space this summer? Tom Novy switches from the unbeatable „We love… Sundays“ to Thursdays, starting up a weekly residency at Be @ Space and is therefore rallying with Monza at Privilege.

The first big bang news came from Roger Sanchez who announced his move. Instead, as in the past seven years on Monday nights at Pacha, his Release Yourself parties now will take place on Tuesdays at the newly designed (and indeed very good) terrace of Amnesia, while on the same evening Dutch trance masters Armada continue to dominate the dance floor of the main room. With the removal of Roger from the posh house club, Pacha now loses its second crowd puller! Already last year Pete Tong had moved to the other end of the island into Eden and successfully launched his new events series Wonderland on Friday nights. This historical step suddenly increased the attractiveness of the mega-disco in the centre of San Antonio so that other party organizers perked up their ears. Now, after six flourishing years, the UK house label Hed Kandi is separating from El Divino in order to take off at Eden on Saturdays. After all the rumours around the rebuilding of the marina and the closure of the El Divino, the promoters probably wanted to go safe. A bitter loss for the extravagant club at Marina Botafoch since Hed Kandi had been the strongest remaining night at El Divino. After Pete and Roger, Pacha would have almost lost another of its superstars. Until recently it was rumoured that David Guetta is flirting with Privilege to run his „Fuck me I‘m famous“ concept. Despite the extremely high ticket prices on Thursdays, last season Pacha burst at the seams. No wonder then that Cathy and David Guetta wanted a bigger venue for greater coverage and more space for performances. Ultimately, in this regard now everything remains the same: The famous Frenchman still is fucking with Pacha, and the high demand of some of the clubbers to join this pleasure will be probably again reflected in gigantomanic admission prices and endless queues at the entrance. Defected this summer has pinched Saturdays, thus making place on Tuesday for the new party series „Flamingo Nights“ with resident Fedde le Grand. Amnesia will be one of the absolute winners this season with its unbeaten events like Cocoon, Cream and now Release Yourself. Not only that the club won the International Dance Music Award (IDMA) in March in Miami as Best Global Club for the third time in succession, it is also welcoming back La Troya on Wednesdays! The famous Spanish mega-event last year had emigrated from Amnesia to Space, much to the regret of thousands of fans, and after the fateful escapade now repentantly returns to Amnesia. Space, however, is losing the strong Wednesday and on top 2009 also means the goodbye of the potent Matinée to Amnesia. What could be more tempting for a party promoter than to host Saturday nights at the best global discotheque? 4 PARTYSAN IBIZA JUN#09

Those who avoided Privilege in the past for whatever reasons, will experience a staggering surprise this year: Tiësto is bringing together each Monday more than 10,000 trance fans, Wednesday is firmly in the hands of the Italo ravers around Mauro Picotto, and especially recommendable is Supermartxé on Fridays – a very colourful crowd, shaking house tunes and cool shows that turn on Spaniards, Frenchmen, Germans, Belgians, British, Italians, Poles, Austrians, Dutch, Russian, Swedish, Irish and Finns and Swiss and and and... Goal! Conclusion: amazing Amnesia, poor Pacha, distress at El Divino, Space in sorrow, powerful Privilege, equipped Eden! Anti-commercial tips: Open-air parties Wednesdays and Saturdays from 16:00 at the former zoo (close to San An, info for the taxi driver: the location is called Galanight) and from midnight probably the most cool (and mostly free of charge) parties at Underground with acts such as Guy Gerber, Matthias Tanzmann, Mathew Jonson, Pedro, Rhadoo, System of Survival, Tom Clarke, Peter Grummich, Jose de Divina, Nima Gorji, Luc Ringeisen and Valentino Kanzyani who are playing here just for fun. If you are looking for „official“ after-hours, forget it. No Space at sunrise, nada-niente-nix Monday Morning Sessions at DC10. The opposite of “official” obviously is illegal, and no authority in the world can stop people celebrating and partying. Try to stick to the season workers and the locals who always have an idea of something nice that is going on at 6:00 in the morning when the security guys kicked you out of the club. Or become a member of the partisan freedom fighters movement YES WE CAN and organize sit-ins on the Vara de Rey or just outside the parliament building in the Avenida España with ghetto blasters and drinks from the supermarket! Just damn the controlled crisis, go out and dance! This years you can get a pretty good party ticket from 10 to 25 Euros on presale. Those with the right flyer in their hands can enter some parties free before 2:00. And we are happy to inform you that some clubs are not intending to raise drink prices. Grand launch of Ibiza’s freshest clubbing destination BoHo With its eccentric circular interior and opulent decor, the former legendary Extasis venue in the centre of San Antonio (right next to the Egg) has been transformed into BoHo (short for Bohemian) – check, if this could be your place to go wild in Ibiza this year! Brand new sound and light systems have been installed and music will be provided by a carefully hand-picked array of forward-thinking productions. Mark Wilkinson‘s Kidology will be in weekly residence, and one glamorous club night, Swankys – with their indecently gorgeous Dynamite Host boys – will take over Saturday nights at BoHo. Superfreq is announcing that they are back in Ibiza this season with residents Mr. C, Dollz at Play and Ryan O’Connor, which will be Thursdays bi-weekly, from June 18th until September 24th. Launching on May 30th and open all year round for Ibiza residents and winter visitors, BoHo’s stylish and affordable ethos means clubbers will now be able to have an incredible night out without worrying about breaking the bank. Entry fees will be kept to a maximum of 20 Euros, even in high season, and drinks will be very reasonably priced. The club will be open seven nights a week with something on the menu to please even the most fussy of musical tastes. BoHo is the brainchild of a team which includes Jason Bull of Base Bar and Es Vive Hotel, and party organiser Tony Truman. Together they have realised a dream of creating an intimate space for clued-up clubbers in San Antonio - to compliment rather than compete with the bigger venues. With a collection of experience second to none and two of the most charismatic individuals on the island at the helm, BoHo is expected to be one of the hottest tickets this summer. www.bohoibiza.com

Chris Liebing’s efficiency German techno label CLR celebrates its 10th anniversary and founder Chris Liebing is back on his renowned imprint with a truly worthy release “Auf und davon”. Times of experimentation are over and Chris masters his very own style. In terms of quality these tracks are probably the best productions he ever made. The sound architecture is reduced to the absolute necessary, incredibly big and warm sounding, using each frequency in the most efficient way.

There is not one single indispensable sound or random effect. The arrangements are extended, giving room for the atmosphere and tension. CLR’s 27 „Auf und davon“ consists of two main tracks and five tools. It is simply the essence of what Techno nowadays means to Chris Liebing. Chris Liebing is playing at the Space opening party on Sunday, 31st May. www.cl-rec.com

Nic Fanciulli The UK label Global Undergound had selected the Grammy nominated talent of Nic Fanciulli to mix the first of a new compilation “Global Underground DJ Series”. Nic’s comment: “Most people my age grew up with the Global Underground series, so to be asked to compile this album is an honor, especially as it’s the start of a new concept.” The label started with the international explosion of dance music during the 1990s and manifested high-end DJs such as John Digweed, Danny Tenaglia, Nick Warren or Dave Seaman. It also stands for some of the most collectable dance compilations ever made, including Sasha’s ‘Ibiza’ and ‘San Francisco’ releases, Paul Oakenfold’s ‘Oslo’, Darren Emerson’s ‘Singapore’ to Tony De Vit’s ‘Tel Aviv’ which reads like a who’s who of electronica’s icons. Nic is on tour now to promote the release and we will find him playing also a couple of times in Ibiza this summer. With the Global Underground compilation Nic presents an outstanding, eclectic mix spanning stunning ambient, dubstep, house and techno. GU founder Andy Horsfield: „I picked Nic to launch this series for us as he is the one DJ who has consistently impressed me every time I‘ve seen him play, be it at Space in Ibiza or WMC in Miami, Nic always delivers he is hands down a truly amazing DJ.“

The idea behind the project is that since nowadays it is hard to avoid the pirating of music, every music producer must deal with illegal downloads which are so widely available and difficult to trace. Mata Hari stands as the label’s symbol to express the cunning way of dealing with this problem. In the early 20th century Margaretha Geertruida Zelle elevated exotic dance to a respectable status in society while carrying on her spying activities. The real Mata Hari and the record label of the 21st century have not that much in common, but you can download nice tracks. Q: What do you think of club culture in Ibiza now, compared to years ago? I‘d say it’s far more international now, whereas 5 years ago, the visitors were primarily English and German with some Spaniards as well. It‘s broader and more varied, but a bit more corporate. The original magic of discove ring a new scene is past for those of us who have been here for a while, but for newcomers, there is still lots of new discoveries to be made! Q: Do you believe in miracles? What was the incredible little miracle that happened to you most in Ibiza? I saw people meeting for the first time at my night and then returning the following year married and creating families! Q: What do you think is the special energy that makes Ibiza so unique? It‘s an island that brings everyone from around the world together to enjoy the music. That alone is unique. Q: How and when did everything start for you on the island? In 1995 I played Ibiza for Cream at Ku for the first time. Q: What are your top Ibiza highlights since coming here? My opening party for Release Yourself at El Divino. It the start of the era! Hosting Isle of MTV at Privileg was e and Cafe Mambo and bringing my family to the island for the first time. Q: What do you like to do for leisure Ibiza? Ibiza is great to relax and chill, but I loveintaking a boat across to Formentera and snorkelling in the lagoons around Ibiza.

Q: Do you know another place in the world that could be compared to Ibiza? Not really! Q: Why is it so special for a DJ to play here? As I said before, it‘s the one place EVERYONE from around the world goes to hear dance music. What better audience can one ask for? Q: Do you think people should let music and dancing set their minds free and not drugs? Absolutely! I think drugs only cloud the experience and don‘t let you truly appreciate and remember it properly. Q: What effect do you think global warming will have on this generation and the dance music scene? Global warming affects ALL of us and if we don‘t have a habitable world to live in, NO one will be dancing! PARTYSAN IBIZA JUN#09 11

Q: Best party in Ibiza except yours?? It was La Troya Assesina with DJ Oliver. Now let‘s see who takes it this year!

10 PARTYSAN IBIZA JUN#09

Urban coolness meets tropical delights The new adidas Originals absorb the glamour and flair of the 50s and 60s with ease and bring them bang up-to-date with an ironic twist. With their innovative form and design, the Curitiba, Ipanema and new Suria metallic edition sun glasses reflect the style of their young, creative fans, carving a path for themselves through the urban landscapes. They skilfully juggle various different components – music, sport and everyday life. The shades derive their name from the lifestyle of a young and trendy city district. The Suria sunglasses, star of the adidas Originals eyewear collection, were awarded the Red Dot Design Award 2008 in the category of ‘jewellery, fashion and lifestyle’ and represent another highlight of this smartness: the temple design is based on the sole design of the legendary ‘adilette’ sandals and is coated in a gold or silver foil with the shield in the relevant colour with a metallic reflective surface. adidas Originals models combine a skilful interplay of symbol and style – they are too sophisticated to be just retro. They are simply – Originals. WIN WIN WIN You can win one piece from the new adidas eyewear collection!!! Armada Music: Best Global Dance Label

Spectacular super success

With a powerful head start into this year, the Spanish acclaimed DJ and producer Juanjo Martin is aiming high. Ibiza’s spectacular new success party Supermartxe will again be Juanjo’s base throughout the summer. Following his residency at Privilege last year, drawing an ecstatic party crowd of thousands to the Supermartxe parties on Fridays, his headliner summer residency has been confirmed.

Defected celebrates Saturdays From a small office in London the independent dance label Defected Records became a well-respected key player in the global music industry, attracting some of the greatest talents working in the world of house. In February Defected reached the tender age of ten and they are celebrating it with the best birthday present a party promoter to hope for – to switch from its former Tuesday spot at Pacha to a new appointment on Saturdays. Pacha on Tuesdays this summer welcomes Fedde Le Grand and his new “Flamingo Nights” residency. Saturdays at Pacha have been legendary for ages. Now it is the turn of Defected to stamp its musical identity on this night and showcase the talents of their international artist roster which this season will include Masters at Work, Bob Sinclair, Dimitri from Paris, Sandy Rivera and DJ Gregory, all passionate about house, soul and disco. Defected will be joined by David Morales and Frankie Knuckles (Def Mix) as well as the addition of another of New York’s house labels – Strictly Rhythm. Defected celebrates their 10th birthday with a five-piece CD package that includes over 60 loved releases and brings to life many of its classic records. Saturdays @ Pacha: Defected from May 30th – 26th September www.pacha.com/ibiza www.defected.com

Starting with the opening on the 26th of June he will play every Friday up to the closing party on the 2nd of October. As part-owner of the record label Set Me Free Records, Juanjo has wrapped up the production of his most recent vocal house tracks (“Millenium” and “Running Up The Hills”) co-produced with vocalist Rebeka Brown. The release has just been out, in time for a summer season kickoff to light up the massive dance floor of famed Privilege Ibiza, known to be ‘the biggest club in the world’. www.myspace.com/juanjomartin www.supermartxe.com

This is the reason why Passion Juice Bar and Café, placed between Bora Bora and Space, has become such a great success. They have over a hundred different juices, smoothies and milkshakes, made from fresh fruits and healthy ingredients, which will provide you with the entire daily vitamin intake you need.
