// TOP NEWS //MUSIC AGAINST THE CRISIS The government of Ibiza is following a new strategy of “positioning the island as the biggest international location for musical innovation in the world.” Finally the political authorities understand what impact Ibiza has in the music world, and that the music and party business is a very important economic factor for the island - so important that it has to be supported and protected. About 240 companies in Ibiza are based in the music industry, generating annual turnovers of about 175.000.000 Euros and giving work to about 2.500 people. As a reaction to the economic crisis in Spain, the local government is now introducing a major project “Ibiza Music Island”, focussing exclusively on the island’s music industry. ECONOMIC CLUSTER The president of Ibiza, Xico Tarres, presented the project at the International Music Summit, held in Ibiza at the end of May, to an audience of hundreds of music professionals from all over the world: “The Ibiza music cluster is a long-term economic project where the Spanish government, the Balearic government, the Consell Insular, the Ibiza townhalls and other institutions such as universities and companies work hand in hand. It will be one of the best economic cluster projects in Spain in order to improve and strengthen the position of Ibiza in the world of music. Since more than 40 years generations of people are coming to Ibiza to experience the musical variety, and each company in Ibiza which works in this field is a fundamental part of the cluster. We are designing the future of the island in a sustainable way and we are confident that the result will be very successful.” REINVENTING IBIZA The President’s secretary Paco Medina: “There was never such a similar project before. We want to establish Ibiza as the world’s capital of music innovation and reinforce the impact this has on our tourism. Our aim is to bring innovation to our current model of tourism as a reaction to the present economic crisis. We need a reorientation and we realise that there is a challenge for Ibiza reinventing itself. Modern music is a cultural phenomenon and Ibiza is a reference for international musical trends. We want to attract more music companies to settle in Ibiza and create synergies between upcoming and already existing actors. We need innovation and this will be the new fundamental start for it.” 4

PARTYSAN IBIZA JUL#09

THINK GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL The idea behind “Ibiza Music Island” is to increase the number of visitors and the profitability in the island’s hotel and hospitality sector by creating a place that is unique in the world. The tourists who are coming to Ibiza are “the nomads of the 21st century, a class of young people who have the liberty of choice” and the project’s goal is to establish a “creative community which will develop and grow over the years.” The mentality of this mission is to “cooperate and collaborate locally in a global market.” THE IBIZA BRAND Some examples how the government wants to strengthen the position of Ibiza in the global music market are to establish educational institutions as the “Ibiza Music School”, an online distribution platform for “Ibiza Music Downloads”, a modern and up-to-date “Ibiza Music Technological Centre”, entire “Ibiza Music Districts” as the Bahia of San Antonio or Playa d’en Bossa, and a big “Ibiza Music Festival” from 2010 where big and small promoters will be working together. All this will be supported and promoted by the local government which until last year did not seem to us at all interested in the needs of the music people in Ibiza. Now, hopefully and - thanks to the crisis, Ibiza will not stop to be the best place in the world for modern dance music! Viva Ibiza, bailamos! by Rica PARTYSAN IBIZA JUL#09 5

PARTYSAN IBIZA JUL#09 9

Oliver, you have been resident DJ in Ibiza playing all the major clubs for so many years and some people already call you an Ibiza legend. Do you perceive yourself as an Ibiza icon? Nooooooooooooo! I‘m just a DJ who loves to see the people having a good time, and that’s it, and of course I’m happy when I see that they are enjoying my music. I’m always trying to keep my feet on the ground and I don’t see myself as an icon. I think that all DJ’s who have been playing here in Ibiza for ages are icons because they create special atmospheres, and that’s what stays in people’s memories.

You came here first time at the age of 17. What was the reason that made you stay, and what do you still love most of Ibiza? My reason for staying here was the tranquillity and the good quality of life we have here in Ibiza, in very few places you can find this. Here in the island basically I love everything, its beaches, its people; I like my little house and the special feeling here that you have between the people.

12 PARTYSAN IBIZA JUL#09

What was your greatest success so far in your DJ career? I have received several awards as Best DJ of the Year from Djone magazine, also Best Ibiza DJ for four consecutive years by Deejay magazine and many more awards abroad, but my biggest success is that my audience is very loyal and that is what really counts because this for me has most value. If you look back on the development of the party scene in Ibiza since the mid 90’s, do you think there are some aspects that have changed dramatically? Absolutely everything was much more liberal and now everything is forbidden: It’s forbidden to dance on the beach, it’s forbidden to have a party at your house. It seems that almost everything is forbidden and banned! We should not forget that the first festivals in Ibiza in its early years were all held at the beach, and now exactly this does not exist anymore. What a shame!

Do you agree with some people who say that Ibiza has become too commercial and lost its spirit? Like everywhere in the world and also in Ibiza everything is coming and going in cycles, that’s life. But yes, it‘s true that now everything is very commercial and that everyone can come to Ibiza. So we have to adapt to it. The true essence of what it was is lost unfortunately. Do you think it’s time for new concepts in Ibiza, new ideas and new faces? Is it a new time in Ibiza? It is time to evolve things and innovate. This is good for the island. Who wants to enjoy the nightlife has to pay for it, but it is clear that to develop this we all have to work in accordance with each other and support each other as much as possible. What happened last summer at Space that you split from The Home of La Troya? It was simply a matter of evolving. That’s life! You are setting up your own new party this season called “The Face of Ibiza” together with Baby Marcelo. What’s the idea behind the party concept’s name? What can we expect on Saturdays at Privilege? Yes, we are now every Saturday night at Privilege and the truth is that we are very happy because we are offering a new project to the island. We are all very joyful, Marcelo, myself and the entire team of over 60 people. The party is a tribute to the clown of the old world, as it was a very mischievous one, elegant but sometimes sarcastic. All this is accompanied by a very good team of acrobats, gogo’s and the shows of Baby Marcelo, going together musically every Saturday with my soul friend DJ’s Java, Javi Muñoz, Marcelo Corazzi, Jonathan Tena, Valentin Huedo, Paola Polettto, Ivan Pica, Julio Navas and David Amo. As you can see, this is a concept 100% for the people of the island, but also we want the concept to become a party for everyone who is coming to Ibiza from all over the world. Since how long have you been working with Baby Marcelo and how do you complement each other artistically? At least about 14 years. Marcelo is a world icon and a true icon of Ibiza but unfortunately his image has been copied all over the island, but that‘s life! Marcelo is very professional and one of the very few artists who are making their audience smile and applause.

If your party is the “New Face of Ibiza”, so what is the “old” face of Ibiza? Our party is just the face of Ibiza, and not the new face of Ibiza. For us the face of Ibiza is the face of fun, enjoyment and freedom for all who are coming to our parties. The old face does not exist; I don’t know where you get this from! What is the musical concept of your party? The musical concept is very important to us and that’s why we have the best DJ’s from the island. In the main room we have Valentin Huedo, Java and me, and in the Cocoloco room we have Javi Muñoz, Marcello Corazzi, Paola Polet, Jonathan Tena, Manu L, Pako S and a lot more with a more electronic sound. If you weren’t a DJ and musician, what would your profession be? I do not know really but I think it would be the director of a music orchestra. And if you were the president of Ibiza, what would you change politically? I would remove all these politicians who love to prohibit things. No one should be allowed to tell the young people that they are not allowed to go where they want to go, or tell them at what time they should have to go to sleep. Thank you very much!

// JUST DANCE //THE SWEET SOUND OF DISCO London’s original disco party Carwash takes over Saturday nights at the glamorous club El Divino, beautifully located at the new marina overlooking Ibiza's old town. Carwash brings together the current amazing buzzing underground disco club scenes of both London and Paris: Two separate cities but united in the nu-disco movement, using re-edits of the classic disco anthems to make the songs sharper for a young audience that just can’t get enough of the disco groove. Carwash promises a hedonistic blend of the best in disco music on Saturdays and is set to explode disco onto the Ibiza scene this summer. Alongside new and classic disco sounds, Carwash will be hosting live performances from original divas like Sister Sledge, making two exclusive live appearances on Saturday July 4th and July 11th - their first ever shows on the island and kicking off with a massive Independence Day party on July 4th. Re-igniting disco on the dance floor in Ibiza, Carwash events offer you great dancers and many surprises, bringing the disco revolution and the underground nu-disco scenes to Ibiza. "We’re swapping minimal noise for dirty bass and funky good grooves, and some of our famous DJ mates are promising to come and play classic disco and funk sets for us, as long as it’s all unannounced and spontaneous," enthuses founder of the Carwash phenomenon and resident DJ Nigel "The Deckster" Atkins. //IBIZA ROCKS FOR A LIVE MUSIC-LOVING GENERATION Ibiza Rocks, celebrating its 5th series of summer shows this year, is raising the bar again with its strongest and most diverse line-up to date. Ibiza Rocks will see the best breakthrough rock bands and artists performing at the poolside stage of the Ibiza Rocks Hotel in San Antonio, putting on a live show like no other. The Kooks, Klaxons, The Enemy, Vampire Weekend, MGMT, Dizzee Rascal, Pendulum and Zane Lowe are setting the standard for a sensational summer in an auditorium-style atmosphere and private viewing balconies off the bedrooms. Ibiza Rocks gave rock and indie music its inauguration to the island in 2005 and last year opened the Ibiza Rocks Hotel with a live gig from The Enemy. The hotel sits right in the heart of San Antonio not far away from the beach and sunset bars. It includes two outdoor pools, a shop and supermarket. New in 2009: Guests can enjoy the Tuesday night live shows from the comfort and privacy of their own balcony and the after-concert carry-on parties “Reclaim the Dancefloor” are taking place from midnight at Eden. For the first time, Vampire Weekend and MGMT, two of the most exciting rock acts right now, will be performing at the innovative music hotel on 18th August and 25th August. The concerts and the hotel encapsulate a whole lifestyle, catering to a new live music-loving generation. As innovators of Ibiza’s live music scene, the promoters have reinforced the image of Ibiza as a musically diverse island. Beats and bass, DJ’s, decks and guitars are happily co-existing and rapidly procreating. Andy McKay, the man behind the biggest youth-focused hotel in Ibiza, states that with this new musical holiday concept Ibiza Rocks has “pioneered a social rejuvenation of the island.”

//THE RETURN OF THE FIERCE ANGEL Fierce Angel is a UK-based record label, set up in 2006 by DJ Mark Doyle who announced his arrival to El Divino Ibiza for the summer on Friday nights, bringing the fiercest house music to Ibiza Town.

JUST DANCE

“I am really excited about returning to El Divino after having a few years away” says head honcho Doyle. “For me it is the best location in Ibiza, the club is in an amazing location and the outside terrace has one of the best views of any club on the island. I think we can offer a fantastic night that will have no equal on a Friday. We’ve been really lucky, as El Divino have given us some amazing support to build a superb line-up this summer. I’ve chosen some of my favourite DJs and performers and they will be appearing alongside our Fierce Angel residents over the next weeks.” The music policy is strictly up-lifting vocal and funky house and you can expect a totally glamorous night with the The Fierce Angel Dancers and a sexy crowd. The summer style theme is “Gold” and DJs will include Mark Doyle, Eric Kupper, Seamus Haji, K-Klass and Whelan & DiScala. Fierce will also be taking up residence poolside at Es Vive Hotel on Saturday afternoon with the weekend being completed by a late night party at the Electric Cabaret Bar. The whole season is topped off by 15,000 free samplers. The CD features 15 of the fiercest summer anthems and will be available across the island. //REBIRTH WITH DANNY FIDDO & AFFKT Rebirth Records was established in 2006 by Shield. The Italian label spawned its first release in early summer 2006 with "Finest Dream (Lead You To Heaven)", performed by And If and featuring vocals by the vocalist Alison Limerick. Rebirth followed up with strong releases by NUfrequency, Billie Ray Martin and debut releases from up-andcoming artists like Outmode, Robytek, Edison and Ajello. Rebirth’s reputation rapidly grew, not following the usual trends but creating its own sound, and in 2008 exploded with the amazing NUfrequency featuring Shara Nelson’s “Go That Deep” and Rennie Foster’s track “Devil’s Water”. Rebirth are getting back to the roots of house music, building a link between the soul of a song and the new technologies. The record label is coming to Ibiza this summer with a very special date at Eden, showcasing Spain’s wellrespected underground star Danny Fiddo and his studio partner AFFKT who last year brought the dance world in motion with their “Points” on Barraca Music. //JADED BOUTIQUE Jade Fidler first visited Ibiza in 1996 at the young age of 15. She instantly fell in love with the island and returned every year on holiday, working a few seasons on the island, before she left to travel the world in 2005, visiting Asia and Australia. “A wonderful thing about travelling is seeing so many different cultures and the connection between people and their clothing”, the young lady says. Jade returned to Ibiza in 2008 with a dream to open her own boutique, selling cool original clothing from around the world. Her wish became true and she opened her new boutique “Jaded” this May in the Ibiza old-town. “I love people-watching and seeing individual styles. It’s great having a shop in Ibiza, I’ve had some incredible times here and met a lot of fantastic people, and feel its the perfect place to get dressed up in something a bit unusual and quirky”, Jade states. The shop is located at the end of Calle de La Virgen next to bar Leon. “Jaded Boutique” is featuring Hanban designs – a unique collection of fun, quirky colourful styles, Cherry Bags – handmade original leather bags and belts, Franqui swimwear, and a cool range of clothing and jewellery from around the world at great prices.

// URBAN COOLNESS MEETS TROPICAL DELIGHTS The new adidas Originals absorb the glamour and flair of the 50’s and 60’s with ease and bring them bang up-to-date with an ironic twist: with their innovative form and design, the Curitiba, Ipanema and new Suria metallic edition models reflect the style of their young, creative fans, carving a path for themselves through the urban landscapes. They skilfully juggle various different components – music, sport and everyday life. The shades derive their name from the lifestyle of a young and trendy city district. Ipanema is a beach in Rio de Janeiro which has long outstripped Copacabana in the coolness stakes. Antonio Carlos Jobim recognised the charm of the area back in the 60’s when he wrote ‘The Girl from Ipanema’, probably the best-known bossa-nova track. Just as the song has undergone many creative remixes, so the design of the ‘Ipanema’ adidas Originals is now replacing classic forms with new ideas: the large curved shield and elegant frame design are inspired by 60’s stars such as Audrey Hepburn whereas the pattern on the inside of the temple reflects that of earlier adidas collections: it is one of the many subtle statements which account for the appeal of the shades among fans. adidas Originals models combine a skilful interplay of symbol and style – they are too sophisticated to be just retro. They are simply – Originals.

//DANCE-INSPIRED DESIGNS March 2009 saw the launch of Dirty Smart, a t-shirt label by clubbers, for clubbers. The self proclaimed “electro house clothing label” has hit the ground running with its first collection of sharp print tees, having already gathered a slew of high profile DJ endorsements. “For too long guitarfancying indie types have been the designers behind the best contemporary urban clothing, leaving electronica fans feeling a little left out”, the creators of Dirty Smart claim. That’s why they decided to introduce a clothing brand for the dance community and invited clubbers to pimp their standard clubbing fare with some dance-inspired design gems. Electro’s bright colours, high energy and futuristic elements are all captured in the t-shirt designs and are complemented by a respect for the medium with vinyl crucifixes. Look out for the new collection that comes out in August.

// SPECIAL EVENT // OPEN-AIR WITH LUCIANO AT THE NEW CHANNEL ZOO FESTIVAL The Zoo Project crew, known for their amazing outdoor parties on Saturdays at the former zoo of Ibiza, now firmly establish another amazing party concept on Wednesdays: “Channel Zoo”. Showcasing labels like Freak ‘n Chic, Crosstown Rebels, Cecille, 8Bit, Moon Harbour and Cadenza, the musical journeys for sure will capture your imaginations in the same way as the infamous Saturdays do. The Chilenian house don Luciano is playing his probably only open-air gig in Ibiza this season on Wednesday, 29th July, from 16:00 at the Channel Zoo outdoor festival at Galanight (Benimussa, San Antonio) with Reboot, Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom, Anthony Collins, Marc Antona & many more! Luciano Nicolet, based in Ibiza and Switzerland, is a sovereign of the global underground scene and boss of Cadenza Records, one of the most influential minimal techno and tech house record labels of this decade. Dropping great records on Playhouse, Peacefrog and Perlon, the Chilean has built up a solid relationship with those that have a strong affiliation with the Latin American electronic scene. Luciano’s collaborations with Ricardo Villalobos, Pier Bucci and Loco Dice have resulted in some of techno’s most valuable music pieces and performances. Yet, he is still the superlative force to be reckoned with when it comes to exceptional lengthy sounds and warm psychedelic grooves. This is the party you really shouldn’t miss this summer! WIN WIN WIN!!!

Win 3 x 2 tickets for this top event!! Just send an email to ibiza@partysan.net and with some luck you and your friends will have free access to one of the best parties this month! www.myspace.com/luciennluciano www.myspace.com/ibizazooproject

// SOUND OF THE ISLE //DON’T BE SO MEAN

How long do you know about Ibiza, when were you playing here for the first time? I can't even remember how long ago I heard about Ibiza, that's how long it is. And I only started coming here three years ago to play. Thanks to We Love! What do you affiliate with Ibiza and what feelings do you have for the island? There is a strange power to the island. I did not expect it before I came. I thought it was just about parties, parties, parties. I am not normally a spiritual man but there is something there. What’s special about playing at Space? I love the club! It is laid out so well. And the We Love people who organize the party I play for are just the best. Like a family. ABE DUQUE IS PLAYING ON SUNDAY, 26TH JULY @ WE LOVE, SPACE. www.myspace.com/abeduque www.welove-music.com

50 PARTYSAN IBIZA JUL#09

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Abe Duque is one of techno’s most inspiring and often unsung heroes, and now comes his new album “Don’t Be So Mean” on Process Recordings. This album collects Abe’s more meditative, dreamy side with numbers like “Why do they need us” alongside the fist-pumping tracks like electrifying “Tonight is your answer”, the optimistic “Life is so good to me” and the two gorgeous numbers “Following my heart” with vocals by Virginia Nacimento, and “Salute the dawn”, a collaboration between Abe and Tijana T, with contributions from Debussy and Henry Thoreau. Dark acid bass lines, Latin percussion, deephouse grooves and ethereal electronica and piano instrumentals - this album blends Abe’s last two years of performing his live shows from Australia to Japan, the US to Berlin, Barcelona to South America, Holland to Eastern Europe, and releases on labels as Tresor and Disko-B, as well as Warner Bros, International DJ Gigolos, Sahko, Tension and Abuse.

//UN-CATEGORIZED ARIAN The current release on Cocoon Digital comes from Cocoon Ibiza resident Arian, to many known as Arian 911. The DJ and producer who shuttles between Ibiza and Frankfurt hereby releases the wonderfully twisted "Dadap Dadap”. While listening to "Dadap Dadap”, everyone will understand why we will not try to categorize or pigeonhole this sound. Arian's way of production has often proved to be novel, unorthodox or difficult to feel out, and with this track he definitely lives up to this reputation. With the help of all kinds of sounds, babbles, background noises and vocal bits, he creates a sonic dimension in which one can easily lose any objective perception. Next to its sonic depth, "Dadap Dadap” is also very groovy and downright monstrously percussive. ARIAN IS PLAYING ON MONDAY, 20TH JULY AT COCOON, AMNESIA. www.myspace.com/djarian911 www.cocoon.net

//STARS OF ZOO Their full Polish names are Grzegorz and Wojchiech but you can call them Greg and Voitek or Catz ‘n Dogz. Back in 2003 they started it all off by organizing a club night in their home town of Szczecin. This night soon became a residency and their reputation grew quickly. Soon they began to produce records together as 3 Channels. The next level of the artists’ evolution was a name change and the release of their first full-length album as Catz ‘n Dogz, called “Stars of Zoo”, a hybrid masterpiece that crosses the line between the best elements of deep house, minimal techno and cinematically arranged live instrumentation. “It’s a combination of many styles”, they explain. “From deep house to techno via traditional house every track tells a different story, but there are a lot of things in common. That’s why we call it ‘Stars of Zoo’. The tracks are very unpredictable, and every time you can hear something more and more wild, but still the groove is very basic.” Reactions from dance floors all over the world have been universally positive - a testament to the power of this music. CATZ ‘N DOGZ ARE PLAYING ON SATURDAY, 11TH JULY AT THE ZOO PROJECT, GALA NIGHT (BENIMUSSA). www.myspace.com/3channels www.thezooproject.com PARTYSAN IBIZA JUL#09 51

// SOUND OF THE ISLE //ADULTNAPPER’S TWISTING WIRES With ‘Madeleine’ and ‘One Room’ NYC‘s leader in hi-tech mind play, Adultnapper, brings us more electronic funk on his new “Duration EP”, alongside a pushing, bouncing remix from Gregor Tresher. Having already featured as a sneak preview on his own Audiomatique 2.0 mix, and teasingly mixed together on Steve Bug‘s Bugnology 3, the full version of ‘Madeleine‘ is now available. Its a focused, dark, yet somehow sweet grind of the sort only Brooklyn‘s master of the black arts is capable of. A tough percussive house grind slowly gives way to twisting wires and electro-acoustic energy as a strangely catchy theme is constructed from spooky broken strings and ghostly junked pianos. With a little more light creeping in through the windows, ‘One Room‘ illustrates perfectly those special daybreak moments, where night stretches its rested limbs and rubs its tired eyes, slowly morphing into day. The mode is continuation here, as if Adultnapper has captured us at his own special afterparty, and this is the soundtrack. ADULTNAPPER IS PLAYING ON THURSDAY, 16TH JULY AT SUPERFREQ, BOHO. www.myspace.com/adultnapper www.myspace.com/superfreqataka -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

//CHILL-OUT EPISODE Macao Cafe started as a restaurant in the port of Ibiza. Over the years more locations opened under the same name, and also the record label Macao Cafe Music was founded. The latest album "Macao Cafe Ibiza The next episode" is just out and contains a collection of Mediterranean sounds, many beautiful chill-out tracks and the musical output of some of the crème de la crème lounge producers from the island such as Thorsten Stenzel, Chris Le Blanc, Roberto Sol and Sin Plomo who contributed their soulful and ambient tunes to the album, creating wonderful and magnificent moments of relaxation. The new compilation expresses the laidback island spirit, the same spirit you can feel at the Macao Cafe beach place at Es Codolar and the Macao restaurants in the Ibiza harbour or in the village of Santa Gertrudis. www.macaocafemusic.com www.myspace.com/macaocafemusic

52 PARTYSAN IBIZA JUL#09

//HELL’S SPACE Teufelswerk (German for "Devil's Work") is Hell's masterpiece. Across 16 exquisite tracks divided into two themes, "Night" and "Day", Hell weaves an intoxicating spell. The nocturnal side offers a contemporary interpretation of Chicago house and Detroit techno. Its sunnier sister disc finds Hell embracing the rich cosmic groove of his roots. A lush, narcotic odyssey, the album sounds unlike anything he's produced in the past. But at the same time, Hell has drawn on his wealth of experience and put everything he knows into Teufelswerk. Hell, a cultural chameleon with an encyclopaedic musical knowledge and a bold sense of style, has carved a reputation as the Warhol - or should that be War-hell? - of our generation. "The album is very personal”, he says. "All my knowledge is there. I went back really far to the early 70’s. I don't think I can make a better record”. When Hell launched his International Deejay Gigolos Empire in 1996, his rebellious creative streak gave the label a punk aesthetic. An open-ended techno imprint with a natural pop sensibility, Gigolo immediately stood out and attracted like-minded artists such as Fischerspooner, Vitalic, Miss Kittin & the Hacker, Tiga, even the Pet Shop Boys, Jeff Mills and Dopplereffekt. Today, Gigolo in Berlin is to Hell what the Factory in New York was to Warhol. There are many examples of Gigolo and Hell blurring the lines between music and art, a popular aesthetic in Hell's arsenal and one that was celebrated in two gallery exhibitions; one in London, and one in Berlin, both in 2007, the latter going by the name of 'Sympathy for the Devil'. In 1992, Hell's haunting debut single, "My Definition of House Music" became a dancefloor hymn, selling 50,000 copies. As a producer, Hell has covered a lot of ground. He's one of the pioneers of German house and techno, and today, as Teufelswerk attests, he's in the finest form of his life. No stranger to receiving awards for his prowess in the music business, in 2002, he was crowned “Man of the Year” by GQ magazine. His latest album “Teufelswerk” rounds up his life's work so far - and he has already led a remarkable life. It is dramatic, beautiful, dark and soulful, a milestone in electronic music. // SOUND OF THE ISLE //KRIS MENACE Kris Menace delivers his new artist album “Idiosyncrasies”. The remixography includes pieces from LCD Soundsystem, Moby, Underworld and Robbie Williams. A triple disc collection of classic tracks interspersed with fresh new productions, collaborations and remixes. This release proves why Menace has made such an impact in the electronic scene. CD1 opens up with the iconic ‘Discopolis’ and features brand new tracks including ‘Idiosyncrasy’ and ‘Metropolis’ that clearly show Menace's ability to produce sharp, modern records that are flavoured with retro synth riffs and drum patterns. Classic backcatalogue tracks ‘Jupiter’ and ‘Voyage’ show off a spacey, tech-funk vibe. CD2 eases in with the chilled ‘Sensuality’ and follows with more atmospheric slices of electronica including ‘Micropacer’ and ‘Borderline’ that both share a blissful, warm ambience. CD3 showcases remixes of Tracey Thorn, Roisin Murphy, Air, Metronomy and Robbie Williams.

The Club CD is an uplifting trek through the middle of the main room dance floor, the Crucial CD caters for the deranged among us, those who like it tech, a bit minimal, kind of twisted, dirty dark and absolutely crucial, and the Crossover CD caters for dance music that broke out of the dance genre, crossed in to the mainstream, became hits around the world, featuring superstar guests to the dance genre like Robbie Williams, Elvis Presley, Asia, Shakira and Bob Marley. www.pacha.com

//GUY GERBER Guy Gerber’s universally embraced single on Bedrock Records ‘Stoppage Time’ became an anthem of the year at the likes of Cocoon at Amnesia and DC10 in Ibiza along with Secretsundaze in London, when it was first released in 2004. The single surpassed the 5-digit mark in sales a long time ago and continues to shift units to this day, and has appeared on numerous compilations from artists as diverse as B-Pitch Control’s Kiki, Francois K, Wally Lopez and Sven Väth. With a number of outstanding remix interpretations released previously alongside the definitive original, now in 2009, Guy Gerber creates a 13 minute monster groove version in his Reshuffle guise, whilst rising French star Danton Eeprom takes a deeply dubbed-out approach with stunning results. ‘Stoppage Time’ 2009 style is definitively another of Guy’s big tunes; there’s absolutely no question about that! // SOUND OF THE ISLE //IN BED WITH MANUEL TUR At the last season’s edition of the Ibiza DJ Awards, held at Pacha in September, Manuel Tur was nominated for Best Newcomer DJ. Reason enough to have a closer look now at his debut album “0201”, out on Freerange Records. The album is a slice of deeply atmospheric delights, with a beginning, middle and end. So, it’s not a dance floor album. Rather, it was literally made in a bedroom, for listening to in a bedroom. Dramatic piano keys, bass lines, chords plus French filtered disco sound make the album both fresh and nostalgic. The rich atmosphere of US-influenced sounds with a relation to soulful European house vocals may be partly down to the huge variety of all sounds that Manuel brings together on “0201”. He says: “The whole album was made up from samples that I've been collecting for almost 10 years now and that I've put together like a patchwork, as is the title of the first track.” Obviously Manuel is a true sound collector with one ear on the past and one eye on the future. www.myspace.com/manueltur

//WE LOVE WEEKLY WOOLFORD We Love… Sundays at Space have renewed Paul Woolford’s residency for his fourth year running. Expect the usual debaucherous shenanigans every week plus the very privileged chance to listen to Paul’s infamous Space sets. In 2009, the projects through Woolford's Intimacy production studio include Morgan Geist "The Shore" for Environ, The Juan Maclean "Happy House" for New York's DFA, and DJ Hell feat P.Diddy "The DJ" for Gigolo in Berlin. On top of these remixes, there is a fierce release schedule for Woolford's own singles on his Intimacy imprint that started with "Pandemonium" in April, followed in May with "Timebomb" and then last month with a James Zabiela re-working of "Knives". Through his work as DJ, producer, experimentalist, remixer, collaborator and label owner, he has succeeded in bringing a rare level of artistry to the world of modern dance music and in doing so, made his name synonymous with high quality. PAUL WOOLFORD IS THE MAIN WE LOVE… RESIDENT THIS YEAR AND WILL BE PLAYING ON THE TERRAZA AT SPACE EVERY SUNDAY.

//NOISE FOR THE BOYS With his new production “Surma”, Electric Deluxe welcomes Tommy Four Seven to the label’s family. Chris Liebing and Speedy J keep on playing “Surma” as a highlight in almost every set, and as a result, both spontaneously made mixes of the track. “Surma” is beautifully dark, yet the main theme is really catchy and always invokes instant crowd response. Noise for the boys and bass for the girls! Rave alarm signals keep whipping up the steady pushing groove with a fat bottom end. Techno, ambient and house are utilized for one sinister intention - to drive the crowd mad. Dark, raw and sweaty environments are where you are most likely to find Tommy Four Seven, filling the void between house and techno: “I always keep the foundations deep and hypnotic, a vibe I feel that creates more of a connection”. TOMMY FOUR SEVEN IS PLAYING AT BE @ SPACE ON THURSDAY, 16TH JULY. www.myspace.com/tommyfourseven www.space-ibiza.es

//BUG’S COLLABORATIONS Steve Bug, the much loved DJ, producer and underground dance music guru has built a career around a passion and a unique talent for electronic music. With over 15 years of tireless dedication to the scene under his belt, Bug announced his fourth full length artist album, exclusive on Poker Flat Recordings, entitled 'Collaboratory'. Based strongly on the ideas of collaboration, shared ideas, mutual respect for fellow artists and the strength of combining forces in the studio, Steve chose some very special producers and vocalists to work with on this exciting project. This engaging, accomplished and utterly satisfying album is the result of Steve's non-stop addiction with solid, essential tech-house grooves, mixed with classic, timeless song-like structures and catchy melodies. Although the bulk of this addictive, instant classic consists of collaborative works, there's still a handful of fresh solo Bug treats in store. The album is not merely a collection of club tracks however, as the whole work plays like a mature, well-rounded journey through various headspaces. Sure, some tracks will work the clubs, but others are equally suited to home listening, quiet time with friends at the dinner table or on the beach. The time and effort spent on this remarkable body of work is clear through the astounding quality, warmth and sheen of the recording.
