NEWS As it is in nature, when one thing perishes another is born, so it is with Ibiza’s club scene. The constant state of evolution is what keeps Ibiza a step ahead from the rest of the world. As the island finally heats up from spring to summer, there are new venues blooming to life, and a few old ones being resurrected. Here we cast an eye over Ibiza’s next generation. The Forgotten Club As the name suggests, this one has truly evolved like a phoenix from the flames. Few of our readers will remember far back into the past to recall the club Summum, hidden away in Cala de Bou from the hectic nightlife across the bay. With the brains behind Zoo Project responsible for its revival, it looks like exciting times are coming for the Forgotten Club. Cala de Bou is about to have a rude awakening. Ushuaia Tower After their incredible rise from humble beach bar to awesome hotel venue, Ushuaia has again raised the bar with the Ushuaia Tower located just next door to the existing hotel. Adorned with floral decoration and hummingbird logo, it is already clearly visible from the airplane window as it gets closer to the land. It is all about decadence and exclusivity here. Guests can enjoy hotel events from the rooftop or the more intimate events hosted by the Tower itself.

Destino Pacha brings the all time luxury experience this summer, the first Destino Pacha Ibiza Resort. Overlooking Talamanca bay, up in the hills sits an ambitious 170 room hotel built around swimming pools and surrounded by palm trees. There is a small club beneath the lobby and Pacha promises some original entertainment.

Hotel Santos First line beach view of Playa d’en Bossa has a new edition to its already impressive choice of venues. The longest stretch of beach on the island (2,7 kilometres) already hosts Bora Bora, Ushuaia, Sirocco and La Plage along its sandy shore. With its cool, contemporary surroundings and Funktion 1 sound system, Hotel Santos is well equipped to give the more established venues a run for their money. Santos’ regular events include Hedkandi on Thursdays and the underground sound of Six Degrees on Sundays.

Backstage Tucked away around the corner from Sankeys, the former Shardana is under new management. Backstage offers a yummy menu, DJ entertainment daily and pool parties starting each evening until 3am. The venue is shaping up for a lively summer. Moma Further proof that Playa d’en Bossa is growing bigger and better is Madrid’s Moma, based in the basement of Hotel Garbi. The venue has a reason to be optimistic for the coming season following a series of successful parties over the winter period. It will be interesting to see if they continue this through the competitive summer months.

Nikki Beach Famous for their jet set, champagne swilling clientele and venues all across the globe in some of the world’s most desirable tourist destinations, its no surprise that Ibiza was chosen for Nikki Beach’s new ventures. Having started work on the restaurant and beach club before receiving the appropriate licenses, construction has been stopped by the Ayuntamiento. Unlikely that they will open on schedule, however, now it looks like they will overcome this set back and bring some new flair to the Santa Eulalia area. Bomba Another club suffering from licensing problems is Bomba. Their original projected opening date was pushed back as they did not have the required paper work. Expect big things and a line-up that boasts Luciano’s Vagabundos, Erick Morillo and the return of the mighty Manumission.

Dunes Dunes, formally the Spanish tapas and bocadillo restaurant Granja Dunes, is one of the new additions to the growing PDB extravagantly chic experience. The venue is the perfect lounge to grab a cocktail before the club, or simply for some leisure and food. Hanging nets and the open air bar add up to the décor and philosophy “life is better with sandy toes”. A full bar selection in the middle of the “Dunes” is providing a beach bar atmosphere in the middle of the busy Playa d’en Bossa main street. The design is modern and retro colored, comfortable for sunny afternoons or late cocktail and dinner hours.

INTERVIEW Richie Hawtin

INTERVIEW Richie Hawtin Welcome back to the island, Richie! Last season you launched ENTER. The party was a huge success. What did you learn from your first season and what will you change? I think we learned that people in Ibiza are interested in a more well-rounded musical experience. Some of the other clubs and parties focus on a very specific type of music within the techno genre or within the house genre. With ENTER. I wanted to have people to be able to appreciate the greater sense of where electronic music is in 2013. Some of the other clubs actually can‘t do that because they have only one or two rooms. One of the best things about Space is that we have five areas where we can play music. This year we are taking over all five rooms and what you gonna see different than last year is that it‘s actually going to be wider and deeper in musical terms. You are going to get more eclectic sounds on the ENTER.Air terrace, a little bit more melodic and even poppy. The area that was last year the Sake bar we turned into a kind of experimental-flow techno-cave which will be more dark, throbbing and drony. We hope that people go on a journey, going from one room to another, experiencing different DJs, experiencing different lightings and décor. And hopefully walking away with an experience that is unlike anything else on the island.

TheClubbingBible.Net

17

INTERVIEW Richie Hawtin KEHAKUMA is now doing Saturdays which gives you complete control over the covered terrace. Can you tell us something about the concept and the music there? The terrace has always been better for a little bit housier sounds. The decorations are warmer, nearly circuslike to give it a difference from the other rooms. What I didn‘t like about last year was that although the rooms were quite different I still didn‘t think they were different enough. So I wanted the rooms this year to be musically different but also to feel different by their mood and their lighting. So I‘m working really hard on that. On the covered terrace you will get a more cohesive, funkier house sound than perhaps happened there last year. Maya Jane Coles is playing a bigger part at ENTER. this year. She has become one of the most sought after DJs on the island, she could have played everywhere. So what did you offer her to make her choose ENTER.? It couldn‘t have been the money alone. If it was for the money, she wouldn‘t be playing ENTER. (laughs). Because honestly she could have headlined her own gig. I think what Maya realised last year was that ENTER. is a family. We try to have a lot of return guests instead of changing completely every week. Even the people who come in only once or twice are friends with the other DJs and

18

TheClubbingBible.Net

INTERVIEW Richie Hawtin

people. So you get a family feeling. We are detail-orientated. We want all DJs who come and play to have the time of their lives because if they have the time of their lives everybody on the dancefloor will have the time of their lives. On Thursday night it‘s ENTER. It‘s our family. Please tell us a bit more about the changes in the Sake bar! We moved the Sake bar to the old sunset terrace so it‘s actually a little bit bigger this year. We have redone the whole décor, it‘s a bit more fun and playful, it‘s more like a Japanese bamboo restaurant and bar. Last year was really good, it was really tight and intimate so we wanted to progress with that and have a possibility to change it up. We brought in even more special Sake then we did last year and there will be some surprises. The guests this year for the Sake bar are more straight ahead, I really invited my favourite headlining DJs to come and play killer-sets. It goes from Jamie Jones‘ house to a bit more poppy with Disclosure to the hard techno of Marcel Dettmann. It‘s gonna be a great early-evening way to get into the mood for what goes on at ENTER. the rest of the night. Speaking of family – your cooperation with Luciano last year caused quite a buzz on the island. What surprises can we expect this summer? Well, we really laid out all the nights this year so that everybody knows what‘s

TheClubbingBible.Net

19

INTERVIEW Richie Hawtin happening. As we move through the season we will be throwing some surprise promotion activities and there will be some special moments. And I‘m very happy to have Luciano, Jamie and Sven play. Loco Dice is doing two nights and on August 1st we give pretty much the terrace to Visionquest. The artwork of your flyers and posters is very cool, the dot has sprung up all over the island. What was your inspiration for that? You are very much involved in all this visual stuff, right? I basically did all that myself, yes. Yeah, the dot is really a point of entry. It‘s like you can grab it, open it up and climb through and find yourself on the other side of the world at one of the ENTER. parties. It‘s also an invitation, it‘s like a doorway. An invitation or a challenge to come and see what happens at ENTER. What other art genres are you interested in apart from music? I‘ve been interested in visual arts for many many years. My brother is a painter so he inspires a lot of my work and we talk quite a lot about music and art. Over the years I‘ve been inspired by a lot of different artists like Richard Sayer, Mark Rothko or Anish Kapoor who have inspired some tracks of Plastikman or just given me a way to have visual pleasure. With your brother being a painter: Have you ever inspired him to do a painting, or did a painting of his inspire you to a track? Yes, I think it goes both ways, the earlier Fuse records in 1993 - the paintings on those records were from my brother. My brother is usually the first person to hear any track and even experiments that never

come out. So there is definitely a kind of conversation back and forth between what I‘ve been doing and what he‘s been doing. Tell us something personal about yourself: What do friends and family like most about your character? I love organising. One of the reasons why I got into ENTER. was because I love organising experiences and crazy nights out for everybody, especially my friends and family. In June I was in Kopenhagen, I organised a good friend of mine‘s bachelor party. I love hanging out and seeing my friends smile. One of my favourite things is giving my friends first experiences of something I already experienced and that I know they are going to like. Kind of like a surprise.

22

TheClubbingBible.Net

We can see this with the Sake bar, when you want people to experience Sake like you do. That‘s exactly what I do. I feel that I have a certain aesthetic that I like, in music and in art and in everything in my life. I feel there is a pretty good chance that someone who is really into the Richie Hawtin sound or djing also likes other stuff that I‘m into. So this is what I do with my friends: I introduce a lot of my friends to Sake, to Sushi or to a new restaurant. And ENTER. is my way of inviting everybody in to get a little bit closer to things that I love. Do you have a certain motto in your life? I don‘t know if there is a certain motto or a phrase but I think we are on this planet to explore. As human beings we should always

INTERVIEW Richie Hawtin

go where we have never been before to taste something that we‘ve never tasted before. I always wished I could have been the first man on the moon, I wish I could have been Christopher Columbus (laughs) but in my own way I try to continue my own adventure and I try to take people along with me on that adventure, or at least open the door that people can have their own adventures with their friends. Thank you for your insights! Now we can see how personal ENTER. really is. Yeah, and it also is a way for me to spend time on Ibiza during the summer and be in a central location, to invite the DJs to come in two or three days earlier, invite my friends to come in for a couple of days and hang out and enjoy

summer on a beautiful island surrounded by great food, great wine, great Sake, incredible music, cool DJs, nice people – hey, it‘s not bad! Finally, what was your highlight of last summer? I think the after-hours at Cala Comte for our closing was absolutely mindblowing. It was a release of incredible energy for all of us and a celebration of our first incredible season. We also had nice after-hours in the middle of the season, up North somewhere, it was very hidden, not many people found it but it was very cool. And also playing at Salinas on my incredible dots was great. So maybe the inflatable dots may reappear this year, let‘s see what happens.

SPOT ON Pacha

They call him the DJ of all DJ’s. An honorable title which implies avantgarde, professionalism and a lot of experience. But John Digweed is far from being just the DJ of all DJs. In a recent study looking at electronic music artists from all over the world, experts ranked John Digweed among the five wealthiest DJs, estimating his net worth of 45 million dollars. Not bad for a producer who has always embraced firmly the underground sound of the scene and cannot be accused of selling out.

On the contrary, he does not need to turn to a more commercial sound to play in any renowned club, but the opposite, the club has underground vibe. In a huge embrace of the new, deeper tech sound, Pacha Ibiza was freed from top-sellers like Tiësto and Erick Morillo to bring a new wave of DJs to the historical venue, including the 45 year old British born Digweed. Together with Fritz Kalkbrenner, Digweed will have a Friday residency with the party title INSANE, which will be a ‚mundo retorcido‘, or

It is said that before attaching his name to the new party he wanted to check the contract first. Pacha offered and Digweed approved.

‚twisted world‘, as we are told. Twisted world indeed, where the underground seems to gradually take over the Island of Ibiza once again. Having played countless Ibiza gigs last season at El Row and Space, Digweed’s Pacha residency might have been a surprise for some but a clever move for the venue. Apart from attracting a different crowd to the venue, a resident like Digweed adds huge credibility to the club. Digweed was selected number one DJ in the world in the DJ Mag Top 100, 2001, while having four hits in the British charts, among them ‚Heaven scent‘. His radio show ‚Transitions‘ is broadcasted in over 40 countries worldwide. Then again he enjoys playing in small venues like the Vista club at Privilege with only a few hundred people on the dance floor. Talent,

TheClubbingBible.Net

INSANE will feature great underground guests like Spain‘s maestro Uner, known for his exotic tech-house sound, who will play several dates throughout the season for the party. Joris Voorn and Steve Lawler will attend Pacha as Digweed’s guests, which can only mean some deep and emotional house sets. The cherry on top for the INSANE summer lineup will be the exclusive threesome set of DJ Sneak going back to back with Mark Farina and Derrick Carter for four nights throughout the summer, July 26th being their first appearance . John Digweed will be the staple holding everything together, a popular face for a new party venture, which will undoubtedly attract a solid crowd. Probably the one most important thing that makes Digweed the DJ of all DJ’s is his passion to bring good music to the people. Regarding what to expect from his sets this summer, he told Pacha magazine: “Music that has a lot of soul, will be played by me with passion.” John Digweed plays Pacha on the 5th, 12th and 19th of July!

SPOT ON Sankeys Throughout the summer expect to see DJ Sneak, Dennis Ferrer, Alexis Raphael, Citizen, Todd Terry, Anthony Rother and Jozif, among many others.

Saturday nights last summer at Sankeys were an instant success and saw the likes of influential DJs that changed the course of the night. Following last year’s hype, this summer the team is planning a small twist to what you already know.

Rebels Welcome Mobilee

Carnival Rebels, a collaboration between the Carnival team and the Capadi Rebels, will be hosting the LAB room. The night will give the opportunity to labels and promoters from around the world to host all the floors and have a complete take over of the club for that evening.

On Saturday, 6th of July, Carnival Rebels are featuring Anja Schneider and Sebo K. Based on their hard work they absolutely deserve this collaboration opportunity with the giant Sankeys and Carnival Saturdays. That said, with no surprise on July 6th they will be hosting the LAB room for a one night Mobilee experience with Anja Schneider, Sebo K, Tobias Linden and the Capadi resident Troupe. Expect the unexpected as this is already cooking up to be a night to remember and an ecstatic musical experience. It has been a while since we heard a Mobilee showcase on the island, which is a good reason for excitement and anticipation, considering the influence of the label in the music industry. Run by Anja Schneider, Mobilee Records has grown into one of Berlin’s most closely watched outfits, with a roster of producers including Sebo K, GummiHz, Exercise One, Pan-Pot and Marcin Czubala. With its discography now running into the mid-30s, Mobilee has managed to carve out its own distinct sound. The label’s mix of minimal and deep house manages to push dance music forward while remaining instantly accessible. This will be

SPOT ON USHUAIA

SPOT ON USHUAIA

The New And Rowdy Ushuaia Experience Ushuaia has always had its fair share of proper underground parties on the contrary to the bestselling pop-house DJs who play the magnificent poolside stage, but this summer the venue makes a special effort to attract the underground aficionados with two new and one returning tech-house parties - “Used + Abused”, “Ants” and “Luciano & Friends”. Every Thursday Loco Dice is hosting his own Ibiza daytime event “Used and Abused” with the help of some of the industry’s finest. At the opening last month, Dice underlined his exquisite skills behind the decks establishing a solid ground for his summer residency. Acclimatized to the islanders through his

34

TheClubbingBible.Net

infamous DC10 terrace DJ sets and later adopted by the Cocoon family, the time had come for Dice to spread his wings and fly solo. So why not Ushuaia daytime pool party? Still, the bold move to Playa d‘en Bossa‘s chic pool venue came as a surprise to fans and industry peers. In a recent video trailer, Dice explains his understanding over this step: “It’s hard for a DJ to say: hey, I‘m coming, I want to do something new, something different. People are expecting something.” As a long-time Cocoon artist, Loco Dice’s contact book was growing through the years, which contributed strongly to the list of DJs who are playing for his party this season. An

impressive array of some of the finest in the scene are joining him for “Used and Abused”: Dubfire, Richie Hawtin, Jamie Jones, Josh Wink, Davide Squillace, Timo Maas and Carl Cox will make a special guest appearance. Joined by his label accomplices tINI and Yaya, it looks like there will be some serious booty shaking every Thursday in Ushuaia. “Ibiza opened everything in my life”, Dice recently said in a promo video. “It allowed me to find out who I am. Now I will do what I always have done - play the terrace!” Saturdays in Ushuaia are devoted to another new event this summer. With the peculiar name “Ants”, and based on the line-ups, it is

looking pretty rowdy already. The newly built DJ booth located on the far end of Ushuaia, where the new party usually starts, certainly changed the atmosphere of the venue and provided a small intimate experience for those wanting to escape the massive pool party chaos. The front DJ booth has been colonized with antsy performances and artists which seem to attract islanders and tourists. Most important for the party’s credibility of course is the music. Hosting an impressive colony of up-and-coming artists, “Ants” provides a proper underground experience away from commercialization. Some guests in July include Radioslave, Martin

Following the huge success of the last years, 2013 will see Luciano back behind the decks of the PDB upscale beach club every week until the the closing on September 17th. The festivities begin in the afternoon on the roof of the newly build Tower for some exclusive Balearic vibes and then move to the Ushuaia main stage, with a spectacular finish back at the Tower until 3am in the morning. SPOT ON THE ZOO

There has been a significant increase in the number of bananas in Ibiza this year and nobody is quite sure if the crazy cats down at the Zoo have anything to do with it. You could find gorillas roaming the streets, stickers all over the place and even some banana street art in some of Ibiza’s iconic spots. Kicking off the summer in May and June with two fulminant openings, this month of July the promoters of the Zoo Project and Channel Zoo are showcasing an array of excellent underground talent over at Gala Night Park in

the middle of Benimussa hills. The Zoo location will be going bananas on a twice-weekly basis. Channel Zoo emerged as a standout party in this year’s Ibiza party calendar with showcases of SecretSundaze and other labels under their belt. It opened back in May with over 3.000 revelers enjoying the electric atmosphere at their stunning open air venue with a stellar lineup that included A Guy Called Gerald, Spencer Parker and Dana Ruh. This season they are teaming up with the SecretSundaze crew on more than one occasion,

so expect tons of explosive material that shows that the underground is kicking in Ibiza. Whether or not all those bananas have anything to do with the Zoo, we can’t say for sure, but one thing is for certain: the music policy at the Zoo is one of the most forward-thinking on the island, giving up and coming talent a chance to shine. The Zoo parties are a feast of interaction, a submerging of the senses. One of Ibiza’s biggest open-air events which has been established as a globally respected brand throughout the years. We took the chance to ask Defex, Zoo Project and Channel Zoo resident, about this phenomenon. “There’s no Zoo without you, is what we always tell people”, explains Defex. “At the end of the day, we’re all party animals who love to dance. We do it for the love of it, and we hope that comes across.” Word of mouth seems to be the driving force to move the crowds to the venue on Wednesdays and Saturdays, no city lights or billboards telling the people what to do and where to go. It’s a party from the people who love electronic music to the people who love electronic music.

This year all the hard work seems to be paying off and we’ve got some very exciting acts lined up”, says Defex. As one of the Zoo residents, Defex will be there to drive you nuts this summer alongside the other Zoo regulars Federico Grazzini, Jean Cedric, Karina, Milou, Michael James, Lee Pennington, Nic & Kaleb and Funk E. Revolutionaries unite once more! Biggest Ibiza revolutionary, the one and only, Mr. Carl Cox, is preparing another summer with new and old tricks under his sleeve. Carl’s 12 nights of revolution, themed “The Party Unites”, are one of the biggest attractions on the island through the hot summer months. The weekly revolution on Tuesdays at Space has been established as one of the must see and do’s while vacationing on the island. Carl and his guests provide quality of sound combined with extraordinary entertainment. La crème de la crème of house and techno will play along Mr. Cox and unite under one simple mission: Make your booty move all night long!

This 2013 there is a lot to be excited, as some new faces will be alongside Carl Cox, blessing us with their performance and music. The nights of revolution will begin on July 9th with Carl Cox who will be joined by oldschoolers such as Dubfire, DJ Sneak, Nic Fanciulli and Tania Vulcano, as well as a newcomer to this extravaganza, Copy Paste Soul. The youngster will be bringing his deep house sound to the table and playing Space for the first time for what he calls “one of the best nights on the island.” This is definitely a not to be missed line-up, considering the talented artists who will be on entertainment duties throughout the night.

Continuing on with summer revolutionary artists who will be making their debut alongside Carl are Davide Squillace, Karotte, Paco Osuna, Steve Rachmad, Eats Everything, Uto Karem, Joris Delacroix, Adam Beyer, Cassy, Marco Carola as well as Brodinski and Gesaffelstein. The party series will also see the return of DJs such as Masters At Work (who successfully took over the main room last year for a performance to be remembered), Deetron, Dyed Soundorom, Guti, Carlo Lio, Heidi, Jon Rundell, Laurent Garnier, Pan-Pot, Gilles Peterson, Just Be, Nicole Moudaber, Yousef and Umek. “The fact that Carl gives new artists a platform, keeps him at the front of the scene and really allows his Space parties to flourish”, is how the Space management explains the success of the Tuesday nights. Carl Cox’s parties are a symbol of unity and music combined with a top-notch

entertainment performances. His skills of blending the new and the old has proved a huge success throughout the years, plus who hasn’t heard or experienced the electronic robot performer on the dance floor in one of Carl’s nights? Something you can only see for yourself if you join the Revolution. ENTER. The era of the black dot continues...

When a perfectionist like Richie Hawtin does something, he does it right. So ironically the most eagerly awaited line-up of the summer was the very last to be released. Some prodigious parties like Circoloco, Cocoon or We Love had already started into the summer when ENTER. line-ups were finally published.

44

TheClubbingBible.Net

Responding to the frustration of many of his Facebook friends, Hawtin promised that “it‘ll be worth the wait” – and boy, he was right! ENTER. is Richie Hawtin‘s party at Space Ibiza. In his second season starting on Thursday, July 4th, he now has full command over all

of Space‘ floors as the Kehakuma party on the terrace has moved to Saturdays. Every floor will have its own concept and Hawtin is very keen on producing a distinct feel in every room. “It‘s easy to hit someone over the head by putting a new decoration inside”, Hawtin tells us, “but to create a continuous, positive feeling it‘s the deeper foundation of details and small things that people perhaps don‘t even notice.” Though having had very little time for preparation, ENTER. in 2012 was an instant success. Hawtin‘s ideas and vision resonated and the party‘s icon, the black dot, has sprung up all over the island. It soon became hip to be associated with Hawtin‘s new project. He himself has a last look over all things concerning the party, whether it be flyers and art work, artists, lighting, decoration and even what drinks to offer at the bar. This season at ENTER.. Space’ legendary sunset terrace will be turned into a genuine Japanese Sake bar to allow revered artists like Luciano, Dubfire and Hawtin himself play quality warm-up sets in a unique setting, with people sipping the Japanese rice wine in its pure form or in exotic cocktails. “When I‘m involved in something, I‘m fully committed”, says Richie Hawtin, even to the point where we saw him

SPOT ON We Love We Love celebrates 15 years of marvelous adventures and exciting history, introducing a new season of more Sunday fun. Expect some familiar faces in the line-ups throughout the summer, but don’t miss the new talent and fresh blood the We Love team gathered over the winter.

SPOT ON We Love BLAWAN: “Making the most interesting techno sounds today. Music to make your mind bend.” DENSE & PIKA: “New outfit for two hugely talented artists - one half Glimpse and the other half of the Record label of the Year, Hypercolour‘s very own Alex Jones.”

BENJI B: “Ben‘s weekly radio show gives us a true taste of what is currently making waves in the better nightclubs around the world at the moment.”

DUSKY: “One of the hottest new UK production teams at the moment, Dusky are on everybody‘s lips. Their fresh take of urban beats is currently taking the roofs off every warehouse in and around London.” HUXLEY: “Rising start of the new UK underground house movement, hot on the heals of his amazing remixes, Huxley plays his first and only show of We Love this summer.” JETS: “Jimmy Edgar and Machinedrum bring us their take on the urban underground sound of Detroit. Mixing hip hop beats with pounding basslines from outerspace.” JOY ORBISON: “The darling of the UK scene. Joy has quietly been honing his craft over the years and is now on top of his game headlining festivals and clubs Europe wide.”

48

TheClubbingBible.Net

Besides a bunch of new blood artists, We Love will be showcasing some well-known headliners as Carl Craig, Âme, Dixon, Ryan O’Gorman, James Zabiela, Groove Armada, Heidi, Mathew Johnson and Joris Voorn, just to name a few.

MARTYN: “Mixing house, techno, dub and D&B is not so easy. Martyn makes it look like plain sailing. Bass is the common factor here and we are sure that his Ibiza debut with us this summer will tear the roof off space.”

Trying to capture who are currently the hottest acts around Europe, the We Love team was going out to see as many new producers as possible, playing in their home towns at residencies that have enabled them to shine. Continuing with the tradition, this year the Sunday series at Space will once again support some fresh blood, giving a chance to some of the fairly new artists in the industry to entertain the crowd. Here is what We Love musical director Mark Broadbent has to say about their “fresh blood” artists, and what to expect from them this summer:

MACHINEDRUM: “Hotflush star Machinedrum first came to our attention with his incredible take on Juke / Footwork music a few years ago. An amazing album later and strings of remixes for all the right people brings him to Ibiza for the first time.”

PEDESTRIAN: “Some of the best new music productions we have heard in many years, currently working with James Zabiela on his Born Electric project.” The acts mentioned here are a collection of artists smashing places to bits with their shows and productions at the moment. “These are the guys we have our eyes on and expect great things from in the future. Acts that excite us and make us want to go to nightclubs in far flung places around the world“, says Mark Broadbent.

This gathering is about the fundamentals of a good party that occurs every Sunday at Space: the right DJ at the right time, in the right place, playing the right music.

Matthew Matthew Styles, a veteran in the electronic scene, has one of those musical backgrounds that is crucial for the history behind the craft he has taken on. English born Matthew came to this world with a skill already flowing through his genes, passed on by his father whose profession as a disc jockey influenced the kid through all his life. The youngster followed his dad’s footsteps and gained valuable DJ skills in his youth, the building foundation for his future. Throughout his teenage years, Matthew entertained all the Southwest of England with his music and DJ tricks, but it wasn’t until a move to London he started to appear under the global electronic radar.

A random meeting with the rebel Damian Lazarus, who at the time was starting City Rocker Records, proved to be an important event for Matthew’s career. Lazarus gave the young artist the opportunity to do a few remixes for his label, which led to working with other essential imprints. Matthew Styles’s strong bond with Lazarus continued further in later years with an invitation to a management role in Lazarus’ new venture Crosstown Rebels. Remixes and collaborations continued all throughout the 2000’s for significant labels and DJs such as Dinky’s Horizontal label, Cocoon, Ostgut & Tsuba, and many more. Moudaber has done guest appearance mixes for Carl Cox and John Digweed’s radio shows, while Pete Tong called her a rising star on BBC1 last year. Being a Carl favorite, Nicole Moudaber has a solid spot as a resident alongside him in Space, and he refers to her as exactly the fresh talent he wants at his weekly nights. Her new album “Believe” is out now on Adam Beyer’s Drumcode label, but Moudaber is determined to accomplish even more: “I have a lot of work to do,” she says. “I’d like to tour behind my label, have my own stage at festivals. I want to work with vocalists and different artists. I’m not where I want to be yet, and that drives me a lot. I’m just warming up.”

Moudaber grew up between Africa and the Middle East, but it wasn’t until a trip to NYC she found admiration for house music and started

throwing the big apple style parties back in Beirut. Her career begins behind the scenes as a manager for Southeast Recordings and a promoter, helping with booking artists for the legendary Turnmills club. Curiosity took over and she decided to explore her creativity as a DJ and make music herself. TheDJList refers to her musical style as “flawlessly executed, sleazy, edgy house and tough, soulful techno”. When she caught the attention of maestros as Carl Cox and Steve Lawler, Carl snapped her early productions for his label Intec and Lawler followed with taking a piece of her music for his own Viva label. Check out Nicole Moudaber July 23rd in Space for Carl Cox, and August 2nd in Amnesia for Music On.

is back with more Another Frenchie has been rising on the horizon through the years. D‘Julz is re-releasing his 2011 cult hit ‘Da Madness’ with remixes from The Martinez Brothers featuring Phil Weeks, Rolando and Doc Martin, plus a sharp remake for 2013 from the man himself. D‘Julz started his career in 1992. His music is at the cross of house and techno with tribal, dub, funk and breakbeat influences. His sets demonstrate mixing skills and eclecticism – the hallmark of any big DJ. Humble yet a strong musician, D‘Julz has gained global respect through his musical expertise. Strongly influencing the industry

58

TheClubbingBible.Net

D‘Julz’ particular personal style turned him into one of the leading French DJs. His affection for music and strong basslines gave birth to the classic hit ‘Da Madness’, released a few years back on his own record label, Bass Culture. The track became instant hit back in the day and is one of those bombs, which you can always observe in a DJ set from artists around the globe. Bringing back this classic for some refreshing new remixes, D‘Julz prepared an EP dedicated to ‘Da Madness’ with the help of some major players in the music game. The four tracks are an exciting combination between D‘Julz, Doc Martin, The Martinez Brothers and Rolando, mixing the past and present and polishing this oldie through the artists remixes with a fresh kick for the upcoming summer. Rolando’s version reflects his Detroit background with a strong techno influence and a spunky analogue bassline, perfectly synchronized claps in the background, combined with the Jamaican vocal, making this remix the ideal dance floor bomber. Doc Martin on the contrary makes his mark with a deeper high tense version. The progressively increasing basslines accompanied by a saxophone ring give the

remix an uplifting finish. The Martinez Brothers teamed up with French producer Phil Weeks for a different version of ‘Da Madness’. Their remix is introducing a stable bassline with high energy levels and a couple of bass drops underlining The Martinez Brothers signature sound. Last but not least, D‘Julz steps in to polish his masterpiece with a sexier, more soulful remix. The extended vocal, slower tempo and skillful percussion make a perfect finish, proving Bass Culture’s growing reputation for quality in sound.

Currently, ND Baumecker is working on projects with his partner Sam under the affiliation Barker and Baumecker and concentrating on his Panorama Bar residency.

ND’s career path as a disc jockey began in 1991 in his hometown Frankfurt, Germany, where he also worked as a record shop assistant. Berlin was calling and in 2004, ND packed his bags and off he went to explore the city’s dance floors. This proved to be a turning point for his career, where he not only flourished but also was quickly adapted to a new residency at the legendary club Panorama

Bar. Besides that he was also given the opportunity to work full time as the venues booking agent and expanding his contact list even further. His musical style is peculiar and different; his fascination with various genres of music can be noticed through his constantly changing DJ sets, creating a distinctive journey each time he plays. ND’s mixing is described as “some of the best you will hear in a club, bringing together completely different tracks in surprisingly conclusive way.”

Pan Pot

A round control knob, enabling the user of a mixer to move the signal to any point in the stereo sound stage by varying the relative levels, is the definition of a pan-pot. But Tassilo Ippenberger and Thomas Benedix aka Pan-Pot are far more complex than that. Having taken the underground by force in the last few years with their experimental sound, Pan-Pot have established a dominated presence in the electronic world. FEATURE

FEATURE indicate a growing personality characteristic in the male artists.

BY TEODORA GUEORGUIEVA

The scene has been divided between the musicians who keep their vow to the music, the veterans who have seen the highs and lows but still continued moving forward, and in contrast the PR profile DJs who after a few years of touring and a bit of attention loose themselves in the glitz and glamour.

or

?

BOYs, Pull down your skirts and put on your pants. A “diva” is a distinguished female singer, according to dictionary.com. A “disc jockey” is a person who selects, plays and announces records at a discotheque, according to the same source.

76

TheClubbingBible.Net

Precisely, that notes the difference between both terms and raises a peculiar concern on the strange phenomenon in the electronic music scene that incorporates both terms to

the fans who will pay and contribute to the artists’ salary. DJs are our entertainers and serve us music, as bartenders serve drinks.

The true concept of electronic music seems to be getting lost and drifting away in between the fame, 5 star hotels, money and groupies.

On the contrary, the female side of the industry consists of hard working, strong entertainers with many characteristics men seem to lack. As female DJs, women have to go through many loops and prove their talent, yet stay away from attitude and concentrate on the performance and music. Girls put in the work, appreciation, understanding and respect instead of playing a character in the backstage superficial show.

In such rapidly growing, male dominated industry should the popularity contest play such a significant roll in an artist profile? Should we be more concerned with the name rather than the music?

DJ boys, it might be time to pull down your skirts and put back on your pants. No need for attitude, just make us boogie and don’t be moody. Forget “divas”and let us dance united in celebration of life, arts and music.

To answer these questions there is a need for further discussion on today’s DJ. The transformation of the electronic music world throughout the years from the dark ages of the underground club scene to today’s massive market has drafted a strong commercial exposure. Oddly and unfortunately with growing interest and global recognition, the “diva attitude” seems to be taking over the masculine DJ figures in the industry. Realistically DJs work for us, the general public, the people that are out there to smile, dance and have a blast for those few hours,

FUN FACTS ON HOW TO SPOT A “DIVA DJ” Entourage: A truly successful diva has a loyal following. Rudeness to the supporters: Divas can not be bothered by the „little people“. Hypocrisy: A diva is so rarely wrong that their extraordinary „specialness“ means that no fault could possibly lie with them in a dispute. Ignorance: You will never see a true diva on the dance floor busting moves with the ravers.
