In the midst of the calm and quiet winter season on our island the plans of the Spanish government to consider oil drilling just off the coast of Ibiza caused an unified and decisive resistance movement by almost all residents, no matter the income or occupation. Thousands sent letters of endorsement and 130.000 people signed the petition. ‚Ibiza says No‘ became a massisve social movement also on Facebook. At the moment the drilling plans that would endanger the environment

and could cause havoc for the tourist economy of Ibiza are shelved but we will have to keep an eye on any new developments in this row that occupied the island for the last months. Ibiza says YES! On a more positive note the summer of 2014 looks to be one of the most fascinating and lucrative of the last few years. WELCOME BACK which is planned for the Plan Be venue near Santa Gertrudis. And a big YES to one of our favourite parties El Row joining Kehakuma at Space – a double bill that proves fantastic value for underground clubbers.

Some other big news from Space this season: Trance will return to the venue with Ferry Corsten‘s ‘Full On’ parties taking over ‘Clandestin’ every Friday. ‚We love Sundays‘ under new Safehouse management looks great with a varied line up and Loco Dice‘ only Ibiza appearance of the summer on August 10th when he will celebrate his birthday at the ‚world’s best club‘. Just over the road from Space, with a new focus on the massive EDM-hype, Ushuaia booked Avicii, David Guetta, Hardwell, Ingrosso/Axwell and Armin van Buuren for weekly events. With Cova Santa on the other hand the underground scene will have a new open air venue with Luciano and Solomun‘s Diynamic parties having been confirmed already. The venue on the road to Sant Josep is known as a restaurant but has also been used for ‘Music On’ afterhours as it is owned by the heads behind Amnesia. No surprises there, by the way, the San Rafael venue won‘t change its successful party week: We are looking forward to fridays ‘Music On’ (with special guests Carl Cox and Jamie Jones) and Sven Väth‘s ‘Cocoon’, which will return for its 15th anniversary season, featuring Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano and Richie Hawtin. World travelling dance floor destroying DJ and genre defining producer from New York. Seemingly effortlessly at the pinnacle of electronic music innovation as many different guises. We grabbed uber busy head honcho of Objektivity imprint Dennis Ferrer for a quick fire interview ahead of his residency for Insane at Pacha. Hola Dennis! How are you doing and are you ready for the summer season at Pacha? Is there anything you do in particular to be prepared for your Ibiza visits? Hello! I‘m fine thanks for asking. There‘s an absolute ton of things to do to prepare for my Ibiza visits this year. From finding a home to rent and a car to thinking about what the hell am I going to bring clothing wise. Oh and lets of course not forget the real reason this question is being asked - what am i doing musically wise to prepare? Honestly, have no idea… I‘m flying by the seat of my pants. I‘m of course searching for new records to play, new records I might be able to break. I‘m doing the same thing everyone else who has a night in Ibiza is doing: freaking out! [laughs] What do you find unique about Ibiza clubbers? Well that depends on what we are calling Ibiza clubbers. There are two kinds, the experienced local/experienced non-local who take Ibiza in

stride. They‘ve seen it all and enjoy a nice smooth ride. Island life is the motto and a free spirited attitude is what is important. These are the judge and jury of the island. Your reputation rises and falls according to this clan. Respect is the key here. DJ‘s who fail to properly pay homage to them are rarely fully embraced. Make them dance and you are welcomed. Not an easy thing to do, mind you! [laughs] And then we have the fly-ins with their devil may care attitude. It‘s all about hands in the air, lets get super fucked up, wake up next to a stranger and lets do it all over again tomorrow night. [laughs] This clan is very important also. They provide energy, youth, unstableness to a party.

It‘s what makes us all go “Wow, last night was super crazy! The music was nuts and the people were like monkeys hanging from the lights! Crazy!” This is what tends to be unique about Ibiza: the mix of the clans on any given night at any given venue. As a DJ it‘s very entertaining and challenging to try and get everyone on the same page the night you are playing. This season you are playing twice a month for Insane at Pacha. Having a residency in Ibiza, do you handle it differently considering that most people on the dance floor are transient holiday makers? No I do not. I was hired to be me. I don‘t plan on changing the way I play. I might make an adjustment or two with regards to which records in a set I should play but as a whole I don‘t take transients into consideration. The only thing you can do is keep your set list constantly fresh. You have made some massive crossover hit records over the years including ‚hey hey‘ that was an island and world dance floor anthem. Do you feel pressure to play these tunes perhaps more than you would like? Anyone who‘s seen me play knows that I‘m rarely ever pressured to play those records.[laughs] So in short - you will not hear me play „hey hey“ anywhere on the island. PERIOD. It‘s had it‘s time….

What are the main challenges for a DJ in 2014 considering the technological changes and music dissemination methods that have occurred in recent years? I believe that remaining relevant in the sea of people, DJ‘s, artists who seek the same thing you do is the only and biggest challenge facing any

INTERVIEW DJ in 2014 and beyond. Since technology has leveled the playing field you have to rethink your strategic policies. It‘s not enough to just be a good DJ with good perceived taste. You must have that „it“ factor - whatever that may be for you. It‘s always been a hustle and not always respected as most common folk believe it‘s easy to be a DJ. For the most part they‘re right but only a very small minute few get the opportunity of a lifetime to play in the „professional“ league. So extending your stay, worthiness and relevancy is of the utmost importance. If you don‘t believe so then there will be a young DJ who comes along and will replace you. How flexible are you musically when you perform? Do you try to engage with the crowd and read what they are feeling at that time, or do you steer them towards the journey you wish them to take that night? I believe in reading the crowd and adjusting accordingly. In reality we are entertainers. We are paid to entertain. Sure we can educate every now and then but in the end my job is to make you dance. If my journey is an all out self-fellatio induced trip through the inner workings of my own mind then I don‘t believe I‘m doing my job. How can you as a DJ stand there and stick through 30 minutes of a crowd being bored to death and staring at you and you don‘t attempt to change the situation? That‘s just nuts. Of course we all have nights where a crowd doesn‘t get you because they‘re used to another genre of music. But believe me when that happens I‘m losing my mind trying to find records that will work. It‘s only when I‘ve exhausted all my available options that I say „ok… it‘s one of those nights… let‘s just make it to the end“ [laughs], I‘m

just wired differently I guess. How do you keep motivated and current without following obvious musical trends? By remembering what we did when we were 18. [laughs] Life in music is simple. You hear something you like, it‘s not on the radio, not a lot of people are playing it but it‘s amazing. You find another record that is like that and wow and so on and so on. It‘s just remembering that feeling and always trying to find it. Sometimes you have to dig it out because as you become older you become jaded. You‘ve practically heard it all already. Lets be realistic here - it‘s not like you‘re going to hear a chord

progression you‘ve never heard in your life up to that point. It‘s all been done already. There is not an infinite amount of chords, so it‘s just basically recalling feelings. You hear a huge bassline, a nice vocal, amazing drums, and an impressive chord progression and you‘ve got me. It doesn‘t matter what genre that track is in.

situation has been in plain sight, it‘s just deemed cooler to look the other way. Now because of this policy a track is basically worthless nowadays, it carries no weight. It can be gone in 2 weeks and no one will ever notice it really existed unless it broke in on the charts at a high ranking. Vocal records are now the commodity.

What do you predict will be the next big sound coming through this season and have you any predictions for the tune of the summer? Honestly, I believe vocals will be coming back slowly. Tracks will always have their place. But lets be honest here: tracks are really a guy thing. Girls want to sing their favorite records, and if the dance floor is full of girls I can bet you 100 bucks guys will be running to that dance floor. [laughs] Now the only issue is if there are enough producers who can actually make vocal records. That is why it‘s been a mostly track dominated period of time in underground dance music as of late. Vocal records are difficult to do and it is easier to say you don‘t like them than to actually admit that you don‘t have the resources to make them. The reality of the

How do you see the Pacha crowd in particular? Is it an honour for you to be invited to play here? The Pacha crowd is a very mixed crowd. I‘m going to enjoy that. It is definitely an honor to be invited to play there. What is your relation with the Pacha management and the team? I have all the admiration in the world for all of the staff there. They‘ve shown me so much love. It‘s really an amazing situation for me and my team at Objektivity. Do you have any nice recommendations for our readers which places on the island they should visit during their stay? Obviously all the party destinations. But other than that? Rent a car or a scooter and go explore the island. That‘s the whole point of being there exploration. There are so many quality places and destinations to find. Just get up and go. Theoretical question last: Imagine the government is banning all electronic music after your final set at the end of the summer. What last track would do you play and why? Donna Summer’s Last Dance. USHUAIA Season Preview 2014 EDM paradise! In a surprisingly short amount of time a relative newcomer in Ibiza‘s clubbing circuit has established itself as one of the ‚must dos‘ of every Ibiza holiday: Ushuaïa with its legendary open air parties around a pool and in front of a huge festival-like stage has become one of the biggest players on the island, this year supported by the very Créme de la Créme of the EDM and dance scene. With only one party catering for fans of underground sounds this year‘s focus is clearly on big selling chart acts and superstar DJs.

For seven Sundays in July and August Avicii is confirmed. After selling out the place almost every week last summer, sometimes even surpassing David Guetta, we expect another great year for the Swedish ‚Wunderkind‘. After his worldwide superhits “Hey Brother”, “Wake me up” and “Addicted to you” his fans are already looking forward to his new productions. And with a fresh album out this summer there will be no shortage of tunes to play.

Replacing Luciano on Tuesdays, the reigning number one DJ of the world (according to the DJ mag poll) Hardwell will have his first own Ibiza party. “I am Hardwell” is clearly focused around the EDM shooting star and opens on June 24th. On Wednesdays the Swedes return: Two beams forming an incredible /\ shape were seen over Es Vedra in May as news spread across the internet that Axwell /\ Ingrosso were returning to Ushuaïa this year: Their Departures party will run in its second season, starting on the 25th of June. Guests include Alesso, Arman van Helden, Dirty South and Martin Garrix.

On Mondays David Guetta returns to Ushuaïa with the open air edition of his iconic “F*** me I‘m famous” parties. The man behind ‚Shot me down‘ and ‚B.A.D.‘ needs no further introduction - the opening party is set for June 30th.

Thursdays will now belong to international trance phenomenon Armin van Buuren. After Privilege last summer the Dutch superstar will move his Ibiza residency to Ushuaïa and will provide all the dance fans with a show that simply no one

should miss. To enhance the experience, Armin will play a longer set than previous years and he will be supported by 2 renowned DJs every week. Look forward to the opening on June 26th! Music is the ANTSwer! Every Saturday, from May 31st. Ants are social insects, their communication among each other has long been an object of interest and marvel by the human species. So why not party like an anthill! Ushuaïa‘s in-house event with the unlikely name became the most talked about newcomer party of the last season. With generous discounts for locals and workers Ushuaïa became a weekend-must on the island and was also a great success among holiday makers well versed in underground music. The line ups for June are out already and promise some awesome music for these first balmy summer nights of 2014: Andrea Oliva as resident is back each and every date throughout the month with his accessible and balearic take on house music. Special guests for the first month include Maya Jane Coles, Magda, Hot Since 82, Deetron and Yousef. And to make sure the party starts proper every Saturday the afternoon residents Los Suruba are making their return, whose rise in electronic music last year can only be described by the overused term ‚meteoric‘. The line up promises to be the biggest yet as in the first four weeks it already includes talents like Danny Tenaglia, Dyed Soundorom, Adam Beyer, Mano le Tough and Laurent Garnier‘s only Ibiza appearance of the summer. In July old time friends and superstars Fatboy Slim, Masters at Work and Nicole Moudaber will join Carl.

Probably Carl‘s biggest guest of the season is announced for July 22nd when Italian technogiant Marco Carola will play the Space mainroom for an exclusive date outside his Amnesia residency. “I almost can‘t believe this is my 13th year at Space Ibiza”, says Coxy, “I really didn’t think we would get past 5 years so I am totally overwhelmed by the party’s success. To be expanding is truly a great sign of the night’s popularity and demand and also allows us to bring even more talent to the island. We are currently putting the finishing touches to this season’s line up and it’s going to be one of the best ever!”

Ibiza Calling moves to Wednesdays. In its seventh season the party from June 18th to September 24th will be uniting house, progressive, electro and dubstep. Yes, it will come back to Space Ibiza this year for its third season but apart from that very little was known about Richie‘s plans for his summer residency. The new commitment of Space Ibiza to trance is presented under the Clandestin – label and will take place from June 20th to September 26th. Ferry Corsten‘s Full On party series is being transferred from San Antonio and includes artists like Aly & Fila, Gareth Emery, Cosmic Gate and John O‘Callaghan. Fans of the genre particularly look forwad to Space appearances by Corsten’s new project with Markus Schulz under the alias New World Punx. It’s been a while since the world renowned main room of Space saw trance music on a regular, weekly night so expect a heartfelt and emotional homecoming of international trance aficionados. SANKEYS Season Preview 2014 Unstoppable force The season outlook at Sankeys Ibiza has been confirmed and the club is welcoming back some residents from last year as well as inviting new and exciting acts and labels to do their thing each week.
