Nestled in next to uber slick venues, the Ushuaïa Tower and the world renowned Space nightclub in the recently rejuvenated Playa d‘en Bossa, the Hard Rock Hotel has played host to a premium line-up this season. Supported by world class pyrotechnics and visual performances creating an explosive party atmosphere in its spacious open air stage it opened with a bang, lasers and strobe.Lined up for the opening party back in June were disco legends Chic and Nile Rogers with performances soon after form UK reggae favourites UB40 and American Robin Thicke and Nenah Cherry, making up part of the‚This is Hard Rock Hotel‘ series. Quite an initial flurry, but one soon to be impressively backed up consistently across the summer. The quality has been flowing week on week since that opening onslaught with both Kylie Minogue and the outspoken rapper Snoop Dogg causing quite a stir in amongst the August party mayhem. Standing out in the wealth of talent available to holiday makers and residents alike amongst the peak season line-ups is a hard task but one that was easily achieved by continually confirming world class talent to appear on the Island. There has been no warm up for this prestigious brand starting as they mean to go on putting on high quality events whilst filling the hotel with highly satisfied guests in what has been a colossal first season.

wallet and the vast wealth of talent to choose? With so much musical history, achievements and triumphs, English electronic music group The Prodigy would be an easy choice as headliner for many promoters worldwide. They will be performing live at Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel for the 2014 Hard Rock closing party. Save the date and mark your calendar because this massive event is just around the corner, Friday 19th September. This will be one of those partys that will be held in the memory of those attending for a very long time. You have been warned, it will be epic! Just in case you have been living under a rock for the last couple of decades, this iconic band have pretty much been there done it and thrown the TV out the window whilst doing it. The Prodigy have won numerous music awards throughout their career, including 2 Brit Awards - winning Best British Dance Act twice, 3 MTV Video Music Awards, 2 Kerrang Awards, 5 MTV Europe Music

Awards, and have twice been nominated for the Grammy Awards. They have also been credited as pioneers of the big beat genre and first emerged on the underground rave scene in the early 1990s, since achieving popularity and worldwide recognition. The group‘s brand of music makes use of various styles ranging from rave, hardcore techno, industrial, jungle, to big beat and electronic rock with punk vocal elements in later times. Its loud and its in your face. We love it! The Prodigy have sold over 25 million records worldwide and bringing one of the most celebrated vibrant dance acts of all time to Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel will be a fitting end to what has been a majestic season. Its lucky it‘s the last party because these guys are literally going to bring the house down! The additions to the party calender of the ‘This is Hard Rock Hotel’ series offer a mouth-watering

audio treat for a scene sometimes lacking in live music and performances. Another welcome change and one that has been greeted with great support in the shape of large enthusiastic crowds and glowing press reports. The inaugural season for The Hard Rock Hotel has had anything but a quiet entry aiming to grab headlines from the word go. The launch year for any new business can be a daunting prospect for some but for the family behind the Ibiza hospitality they seem to relish the task. Having over delivered and gone beyond everyones expectations in creating entertainment venues, fulfilling every desire they continually push the boundary of service and quality of the islands industry. Generating huge buzz in Ibiza and making waves internationally with thought-provoking programming and world class production values, the Hard Rock Hotel has blazed onto the party scene this year with weekly concerts attracting a divergent mix of music lovers. outdoor concert terrace provides the perfect platform for hotel guests and lucky ticket holders to get up close to international entertainers whilst enjoying impeccable hospitality poolside or in opulent hotel surrounds. Utilising their next door neighbours grand stage at Ushuaïa has been common occurrence for the Hard Rock Hotel also this season allowing for larger audiences for the marquee dates giving more fans the chance to be entertained by their heroes in an awesome entertainment complex. Critics of the new venture have cited the lack rock and roll pedigree on the initial line ups but this has been put right by the booking of Placebo coming with their big sound on the 12th of September as well as the mammoth booking of festival headliners for the closing party extravaganza. Yet another stand out artist not to miss kicking off the final month is latin Miami rapper Pitbull appearing on the 1st September. SPOT ON ENTER.

EYES ON RICHIE HaWTIN’S ENTER. Closing party on October 2nd!

What a strong season for ENTER. again! In its third year Richie Hawtin’s night at Space went from strength to strength and one can only wonder whether this man is able to fill Space even if it was middle of January. It’s difficult to pinpoint one main reason for the success of ENTER.: Many of course come for the perfectly curated line-ups, others because of it’s more than fair discounts (before 10pm it’s 10 euros with a promotional black dot on your body) or to see a completely adapted and changed Space. Without a doubt ENTER. is also the most personal of Ibiza’s DJ driven parties, bringing together all of Hawtin’s very own principles of pleasure: music, technology, Japanese Sake, art, entertainment and design. It’s this personal touch and winning formula that has brought to life the ENTER. experience week in week out. With four different rooms every week and an amazing roster of resident DJ’s the season’s been full of highlights. One of the earliest memories this year is week 2 on the terrace when Skrillex dropped by privately and ended up playing an impromptu back 2 back session with Claude van Stroke. Week 3 saw Richie Hawtin repeating last season’s memorable b2b extravaganza with

18

TheClubbingBible.Net

his friend Luciano and again they didn’t disappoint. Residents like Tale of Us, Maceo Plex and Dubfire were worth the trust put in them by Hawtin, delivering big time in their slots. The avantgarde, emotional techno sounds of Berlin’s Recondite have become talk of town as well as Guy Gerber’s early set for the Sake Bar. But fear not, September still has got plenty of surprises, specials and ENTER.-moments for you. Please do come early, though, the Sake Bar starts at 9pm to let you enjoy tasty cocktails coming with early sets by tINI on September 4th, Maya Jane Coles on September 18th and Tale of Us for September 25th. The main room highlight of September will undoubtedly be Richie Hawtin teaming up with long-time friend

Dubfire for a back2back techno-fest, the only one of the season, scheduled for the 4th of September. On the terrace, on the other hand, September 18th is set to become legendary with the Apollonia guys taking over for their only all night long session outside of DC10. With a season like this it will be very hard to say goodbye, expect tears of joy and sadness for the melancholy and very late closing party on October 2nd. It will give you one more chance to witness the sounds of Recondite and with Nina Kraviz, Maya Jane Coles and Tale of Us our favourite residents of the summer are all there. Paco Osuna will play the warm up in the Sake Bar on this night while Richie Hawtin plays an extended closing set in the main room. EXIT summer, but not without a great bunch of pleasant memories.

SPOT ON USHUAIA

SPOT ON USHUAIA

there is a couple of amazing one-offs in store.

THE USHUAIA 2014

CLOSING PARTIES

This might sound as a cliché, but Ushuaia is really going from strength to strength each year. This superb party hotel has resolutely found its sound, honed its production to perfection and manages to attract nicely mixed audience, from celebrities to the hippest part of the young San An crowd. Ushuaia rounds off its season early, which is natural for an open air venue – exposing EDM superstars to an occasional drop of rain would be too risky and fraught with ticket refunds. David Guetta, Hardwell and Avicii called it a day by the end of August – but some other parties stay longer, and

20

TheClubbingBible.Net

Tuesdays September 2nd and 9th are welcoming events by Hardwell’s record label called Revealed. With Bassjackers, Thomas Gold, Jordydazz, Marco V, Thomas Newson, Julian Calor, Jcey Dale, KillTheBuzz, JoeySuki, Sandro Silva, Skitzofrenix and Manse the lineups include some freshest and hottest names of the EDM circle. Moving ASOT from Privilege to Ushuaia in the beginning might have seemed a weird choice: listening to trance in the open and before midnight meant going against the typical Ibiza

rules of the recent years. And in fact the first couple of Thursdays could have been indeed a bit more packed for Armin van Buuren – but once the season reached its peak, naysayers had no arguments left on their side. Impetuous and epic, ASOT will happen twice this month: on September 4th with Cosmic Gate and Heatbeat and September 11th with Andrew Rayel and Alex M.O.R.P.H. – both times with Armin as the main headliner of course. Departures went on being a major crowddrawer for the public that is still missing Swedish House Mafia. Wednesdays in Ushuaia have been predictably busy, and the new visual symbol of this party – a pair of greenblue wings – gave a new tinge to flight theme inherited from last year’s sexy air hostesses. The closing of Departures will be September 3 with Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso and their younger colleague Zedd.

SPOT ON USHUAIA

While some may argue that Hard Rock Hotel’s programming might not come pat for Ibiza, these concerts keep bringing to the island A-list musicians of diverse genres. On September 1st rapper Pitbull, famous for his collaborations with pop stars and one third of the trio behind ‘We Are One’ World Cup anthem, will grace Ushuaia’s stage as a part of This Is Hard Rock series. September 19th will see the place go totally mad and wild to the sounds of The Prodigy, who should be very likely to play some tracks from their upcoming album. Last summer the island was buzzing with the incredible flashmob promo campaign of ANTS, the only underground event of the venue. This season it’s all about their tremendous slogan “Music is the ANTSwer”. The party starts in the further end of Ushuaia, close to the beach, and the experience of dancing in the small pool with a black fan in your hand is worth

22

TheClubbingBible.Net

undertaking a trip from any part of the island. Later on the action moves to the big stage, making good use of lasers and confetti cannons. With the closing planned for September 27th, ANTS still have lots of fun ahead, featuring Maya Jane Coles, UNER b2b Technasia, Timo Maas, Andrea Oliva, Hot Since 82, Los Suruba, Tapesh and some special guests for the last two events. Another party of a more underground sound that successfully landed in Ushuaia this summer is La Familia by Joris Voorn and Nic Fanciulli. In July and August it took place on Saturdays as a collaboration with ANTS, but in September moves to Sundays and goes on until the very last week of the month. La Familia’s line-ups comprise Derrick Carter, Breach, Oliver $, Mark Fanciulli, Âme and of course the two hosts of the party – fans of this school of house will appreciate the chance to dance in the open. The grand closing of Ushuaia is scheduled for October 4 and will be headlined by no one less than Italian Stallion Marco Carola who will be playing an all day long extended set.

The welloiled party machine! elrow + Kehakuma “Kehakuma means a lot to me, it’s a great brand which I proudly represent and I am really honoured to do so”, told us resident DJ Javi Bora last month. It’s this pride and dedication by promoters, DJs and guests alike that make this Space party the resounding success it is. Already one of the club’s firm institutions with six years running Kehakuma offers underground style music for the discerning house & techno lover with a keen and strict eye on quality and modernism. This summer it is joined by a one of a kind spawn of hedonistic fun - the Barcelona based elrow party. With its focus and dedication

26

TheClubbingBible.Net

towards detailed production it is the ideal twin to Kehakuma’s reduced musical approach to partying and provides your perfect night-out on Saturdays, whether you are a tourist or an island worker on his hard-earned day off. The double bill works like a well oiled machine: The guys at elrow do a great job in converting the revered Space main room into whatever they please. Whether it’s an alley in the Bronx, a Bollywood film or Rio’s Carnival - you’ll never know what world you’re going to enter when you open the door. This season already saw much applauded sets by very special guests Seth Troxler,

2manyDJs and Anja Schneider. Over at Kehakuma on the terrace the biggest performances included the Visionquest crew, Marcel Dettmann and the American techno shooting star DVS1. But there is more: September is known to bring out the more advanced music lovers to our island and Kehakuma is always number one on their list. On September 13th Italian sensation Andrea Oliva will play one of his rare sets outside of Ushuaia where he is resident for the Ants party. One week later Move D will

play Kehakuma on September 20th. The prolific German with his experimental sounds between house, techno and weirder influences is one of the season’s highlights. The elrow crew too has still some aces up their sleeves for this coming closing month with guest performances from the festival hopping Crookers on September 6th or the English remix-king Hot Since 82 one week later. Finally, on September 27th, this season is regrettably coming to an end in an over the top, euphoric closing party bringing Fritz Kalkbrenner to the main room. Elrow also have announced a very special surprise guest for this day while Levon Vincent plays the Kehakuma terrace together with resident Javi Bora, who is convinced “Kehakuma is all about musical quality and a taste for avantgarde. The aim of the party is to offer elegance, an oriental minimalism with the best house and techno.” So bring on Saturday!

Thank God it’s Friday Full On Ferry Corsten

It’s no secret: Clandestin at Space with Ferry Corsten’s FULL ON nights are a resounding success and have brought trance back to Space. The Platja d’en Bossa megaclub is always seeking for excellence which is why it joined forces with Corsten’s brainchild to identify the brand once more with one of the most followed styles, trance music. The 15 night season which is now slowly coming to an end has brought us appearances by legends such as Cosmic Gate, Aly and Fila or New World Punx. Ferry Corsten himself will play all Fridays in September, closing out the season in style with his trademark sound. The Dutchman has been a full reference in trance music for over 20 years now, with immortal hits like “Punk” or “Flight 643”.

Another much anticipated act for this month is John O’Callaghan on September 12th. One of the biggest names of the scene John is a true island veteran and knows how to command an Ibizan main room with his sounds. Further hightlights in September include the Bassjackers on September 5th or Alex Kunnari on September 19th. For the extravagant and always emotional Clandestin Closing on September 26th Ferry Corsten welcomes Dubvision and support by Paul Reynolds. Thank God it’s Friday, an expression that has never been truer than in this season with trance back at Space and Ferry Corsten in command.

The king is dead, long live the king! When Ibiza’s government sealed the deal for after hours on the island a few years back many feared it would be the end of the legendary We love Sundays at Space. But as Darwin already said you have to “adapt or perish” and this certainly holds true for an Ibizan party promoter. This summer We Love is as strong as it ever was, having had memorable parties with an impressive mix of up-and-coming talents and established A-listers. With the ‘Stripped’ pre-party Space also provides weekly déjà vu’s of the legendary days of yore in allowing you to dance in broad daylight again, the hot afternoon sun dripping through a camo net just like it used to. ‘Stripped’ starts every Sunday at 4.30 pm and is actually also the

British shooting stars Disclosure present their Wildlife party on September 14th playing a live concert themselves with all of their gear in the mainroom. Support comes from a very special surprise guest.

On September 21st Sasha and his Last night on earth concept takes over We Love. The British dance music icon has had three dates already at Space this summer, this time bringing Julio Bashmore and Dusky. Meanwhile on the terrace this night sees the return of Visionquest with an exclusive 5 hour set. Seth Troxler’s label has had a tremendous season so far and will surely rise to your expectations. At the big closing fiesta on September 28th the remaining two season residents of We Love will play once more: The main room will be all about James Zabiela showcasing his Born Electric label. Faithful We Love resident Zabiela has remained attached to the party for many years now and is one of the most musical and passionate DJs around. He is joined by island darling Jason Bye and Gorgon City, who have entered several charts in Europe recently with their accessable deep house music. Additionally, the main room will welcome break beat quartet Rudimental for a highly anticipated DJ set. On the terrace it’s up to Skream and his Skreamizm crew to close the summer in style. Bye Bye

Baby, Baby Bye Bye! Space Closing Fiesta 2014

It was a true ‘Only at Space’ moment: This summer on the 13th of July, Space’ 25th anniversary party, the club’s charismatic boss and founder, Pepe Rosello, ascended the DJ booth on the huge open air arena stage, microphone in hand, intoning ‘Happy Birthday’ with a few thousand people joining in. What an emotional moment for the island, it’s residents and thousands of visitors. Let’s be honest, everybody has its Space moments, some from really long ago, some

Spot on Space rather recently and every summer there are new tourists having ‘their’ moment inside the hallowed halls that they will never forget. Space, the original after-hour club in Platja d’en Bossa has given so many so much. I remember getting utterly lost the first few times inside this maze of floors and alleys. I remember standing at ‘We love Sunday’ afternoon dancing i n a loud and completely dark main room while outside there was broad daylight. For me this was the Ibiza that I had heard so much about. Not to speak about all the musical revelations and goosebumps it has given us over the years and never ceases to achieve. All this was celebrated on this glorious day in July when Space turned 25 and Fatboy Slim, Erick Morillo or Nina Kraviz all turned up to congratulate, together with about 11.000 people. This definitely was a party that upped the ante once again and sets the stage for this year’s big closing fiesta, confirmed for the 5th of October. The mammoth Space season send-off is always an emotional, melancholic and euphoric event with thousands of tourists returning to the island for this occasion only to celebrate the end of another summer together with island residents and workers. Again the car park at the back of

the club will be turned into the huge ‘Flight Club’ open air dancefloor with a huge and impressive stage, this year probably hosted by the Ultra Music Festival again, inviting some of the DJs who’ve left their mark on Ibiza in 2014. It was another hugely successful season for Space, not just because of the 25th anniversary party. ‘We Love’ under new management has gone back to former glory, especially with the new ‘Stripped’ daytime concept for the sunset terrace. With Carl Cox the club houses probably Ibiza’s favourite party and Richie Hawtin’s ENTER. had a strong third year. Elrow proved a valuable addition to Saturday’s avantgarde night Kehakuma and for the more commercial musical tastes Café Olé and Ibiza Calling performed great as well. 2014 also saw the much applauded return of trance music to Space, in the form of the scene’s figurehead Ferry Corsten on Fridays.

Lots to celebrate on October 5th, so come early as the ‘Flight Club Arena’ is usually busy from the start. Especially its huge stage with the best performers and dancers of the island will provide the right setting for great hands in the air moments and smartphone-videos to send home to your friends. This year with elrow’s professional performance-creatives in the house we expect an even more flamboyant show.

Musically this summer’s closing fiesta will see one of the biggest and refined line-up of the last years, with several big names rumoured to play at one of the seven floors.

The concept really attempts to get back to the Balearic spirit sometimes missing on the island with many a random occurrence carefully planned for that WTF moment. Bringing the auditory ammunition across September will be headliners Basement Jaxx and Kenny Dope on the 8th, Groove Armada and Kevin Saunderson on the 15th and after a week off for the DJ Awards returning on the 29th of the month is the unstoppable MK and US jock Derrick Carter. Ibiza town on a Tuesday evening is over run by flowery dresses and daisy headbands meaning only one thing: Flower Power at Pacha, the

Now a weekly occurrence with Pacha co-founder Piti Urgell at the helm, adding a level of musical consistency not found in any other venue, placing Amy Winehouse tracks alongside The Beatles and The Doors, making sense to the colourful packed main room in front of him. Encapsulating the peace and love ethos of the island has struck a cord with many of the faux hippies that flock to show off their best disco moves in 60‘s garb. Steve Aoki has had more headlines than most this year with not one press report failing to highlight his cake throwing or crowd surfing antics. He may not be everyones cup of tea but he is definitely a polarising artist and very popular one at that. Wednesdays Pacha will transform into ‘The Neon Future‘ as he pumps his unrivalled energy amongst ice cannons, confetti and cake for Aoki‘s Playhouse. Alongside

David Guetta and his FMIF brand meet Pacha in a world of beautiful people sipping champagne whilst having the time of their lives. It really is a perfect synergy and one that has not gone unnoticed by management of both. Coupled with his professionalism and drive to put the party first is key to his success delivering hands in the air moments to a sardine tight crowd time after time with the trademark Guetta verve. Over the top production with pumped up beats is what’s expected from this pop hit maker and thats exactly what you will get. CLOSING

MARATHON3 From Cocoon to Music On to Amnesia’s closing party!

Fair to say, Amnesia has been doing very well this summer. The club has got regularly packed on techno (Music On), trance (Cream), bass (Together) and EDM (Foam & Diamonds by Paris Hilton) events. La Troya, Matinee and the new Amnesia Presents might have clocked in more moderate numbers, but have been amazing in terms of vibes nonetheless. However, the most delectable positions of the club’s weekly programme are obviously its two techno nights. Cocoon has produced a highly favourable impression in spite of or, better to say, due to the fact that it has always been busy, but not drastically packed. The biggest technological innovation for the night were rotating semicircular screens projecting live video of the crowd in real time, mixing it with visuals. Music-wise, Ricardo Villalobos, who

52

TheClubbingBible.Net

used to be Cocoon’s stalwart, performed only twice, saving himself for Next Wave. Instead, Luciano came back for 8 dates with his new Origins concept, bringing along such artists as D’Julz, Ernesto Ferreyra, Mirko Loko, Scuba and others. No matter which room they took over, Origins were always buzzing and went on till late in the morning. For the last month of the season Cocoon have lots of fun in store, such as Ten Walls (live) and Sven Väth all night long on September 1, and a most powerful line-up for September 15 with Eats Everything and Catz N Dogz in the Main room, and Origins with Luciano b2b Ricardo Villalobos on the Terrace. The closing will take place on September 29 with Sven Väth, Henrik Schwarz (live), Mathias Kaden, Ilario Alicante, Paul Ritch (live), Dorian Paic and some very special guests.

As for Music On, in peak season it used to get full by 4am, and even those who had bought tickets in presale had to wait in the queue till someone left the club. Marco Carola dropped out for two weeks due to ear infection, but it didn’t affect the huge attendance of the party: in his absence Joseph Capriati was playing extended sets, steering towards Marco’s energetic style. Among the upcoming dates September 5 should be the most prominent with Marco Carola playing all night long, and the epic closing will happen on September 26 with Marco Carola, Leon and ReUP on the Terrace and Joseph Capriati, Stacey Pullen and Neverdogs in the Main room. Also it must be noted that the party obtained stronger visuals with more LED screens all over the place. The line-up for Amnesia closing on October 4 will rely heavily on the programming of Cocoon and Music On as well: Luciano, Maceo Plex, Joseph Capriati, Eats Everything, Mar-T, Butch, Cuartero b2b Hector Couto and more to be announced very soon. The schedule for the other party closings is the following: Amnesia Presents on September 7, Together on September 23, La Troya / Espuma on September 24. Cream will split its closing in two parts, September 18 and 25.

SPOT ON THE ZOO PROJECT

Back To The Roots The Zoo Project

September is upon us in Ibiza! As the scorching August temperatures ease and a few precious inches of sunbathing space emerge on the island’s beaches, one can almost hear the palpable sigh of relief as Ibiza natives join savvy tourists to enjoy the White Isle at its best and finally let their hair down. The summer cycle enters its final stage, a time for relaxation, contemplation and, with closing parties just around the corner, celebration. It’s been a year of mixed fortunes across the island with fierce competition amongst promoters once more resulting in some surprising casualties on Ibiza’s club circuit. Yet as always in Ibiza, it’s the parties with real substance behind them that prosper. The Zoo Project, a weekly gathering

54

TheClubbingBible.Net

SPOT ON THE ZOO PROJECT

in an old zoo that has become one of the white isle’s most popular outdoor fiestas with crowds of thousands dancing under the sunshine and stars, typifies this. Swerving the superstar DJs and billboard hype altogether, The Zoo Project is perhaps the last bastion of the Ibiza underground. A musical ethos that gives up-and-coming artists the chance to perform alongside some of electronic music’s true pioneers coupled with magical performance and an overwhelming sense of joy and togetherness makes for one of the most refreshing concepts to have hit the White Isle in the last decade. Like sunset at Café Del Mar, Monday afternoons at DC10 or

kicking back with the party people at Salinas beach, getting wild at The Zoo Project on Saturdays is an Ibiza rite of passage. This is soulful partying, people coming together as one to create culture. The Mandala Garden, the Zoo’s fourth arena, best epitomizes this vision of conscious clubbing. Circling the vibrant hand-painted mandala at its centre with murals along its walls and stalls offering everything from tarot reading to sushi and massage, The Mandala Garden is a haven of peace. Since opening last summer,

its dreamy enclaves have been providing live meditative and ethnic music, art therapy and healing vibrations, visual and artistic performance and lots of love for lost ravers in some of the most blissful surroundings to be found on the island. A typical Saturday in The Mandala Garden sees huddles of party people taking time out to enjoy the sacred circle and mantra singing, sharing a vibrational energy that not only reinforces the sense of unity that the Zoo is founded on but also takes individuals on their own inner journey. In September Kundalini Yoga teacher Viriam Kaur will join the circle introducing her Kundalini Yoga mantra chanting, taking people on a journey of deep healing. As Viriam herself puts it, “Mantra is the language of consciousness. We live in a sea of vibrational energy – when we chant, we tune into different levels of consciousness.“ In addition to the meditative and healing

56

TheClubbingBible.Net

practices, a variety of live music is on offer each week with well-known local artists such as Saigo and Bahramji performing Indian ragas and talas. The spiritual vibe represents a welcome return of Ibiza’s hippy roots to the island’s clubbing scene. Arguably the highlight of any Saturday spent in The Mandala Garden is the sacred drumming circle with the same team of musicians behind the magical sunset sessions at Benirras beach. With no head or tail, the drum circle, like all sacred circles, offers equality, an opportunity to connect with others and oneself by sharing the rhythm and forming a group consciousness. The sacred circles signify the same message as The Zoo Project itself – unity, wholeness and infinity, a place where everybody is equal. It’s a concept all too scarce in many of Ibiza’s discotheques today. Indeed a back to the roots mentality is

SPOT ON THE ZOO PROJECT

reflected through much of what The Zoo Project do, from the open-air venue to the vintage furniture and reclaimed materials that comprise the décor, there’s a discernable old-school Ibiza feeling from the moment you walk through the gates. Yet above else, it is perhaps the music policy that is most striking in this respect, both retrospective but forward thinking. This year has already seen the likes of Jovonn, Roy Davis Jr., Ron Trent, A Guy Called Gerald and Nightmares On Wax perform at the Zoo, introducing the artists who helped make electronic music what it is today to a whole new generation of clubbers. With such varied rising talent as FunkinEven, Francis Inferno Orchestra and Maribou State performing alongside established talent, it’s easy to see why The Zoo Project is rapidly gaining a reputation for one of the most interesting

musical programs on the island. Highlights still to feature this year include Cristi Cons, Monika Kruse, Matt Tolfrey and Giles Smith. September looks set to be a fantastic finale for The Zoo Project. With some stellar line-ups still to come and a grand closing party on Saturday 27th September, we highly recommend checking out at least one of the final parties on their Ibiza calendar. Yet perhaps most exciting of all for The Zoo Project promoters is this month’s highly anticipated UK festival from 12th to 14th September in Donington Park. The back to the roots revolution is spreading and with the likes of Groove Armada, Sasha, James Zabiela, Steve Lawler, Mike Skinner, Shy FX and Breach featuring amongst over 100 DJs, we hope it spreads far and wide! The Zoo Project runs every Saturday until 27th September from 16.30. The Zoo Project Festival takes place on from 12th to 14th September in Donington Park, UK.

Everybody loves Carl Cox! It’s no secret that his ‘Music is Revolution’ night is probably Ibiza’s biggest party, filling Space reliably every Tuesday. With an earlier than usual start the 14 night season is coming to an end this September having upped the ante yet again: Carl Cox himself played an impressive 10 hour marathon set for the opening. Other highlights included his birthday party with Masters at Work, Fatboy Slim smashing the terrace in August and Laurent Garnier’s only Ibiza set of the season, exclusively for Carl Cox. But it ain’t over till the fat lady sings and this September sees some of the biggest names of

The last month of the summer starts with a bang: To replace Carl Cox on the only night he is not headlining his Ibiza party due to other obligations none other than island staple Luciano is stepping in and closing out the main room on September 2nd. The long time Ibiza veteran is having a fabulous season embracing his roots and playing the sound he loves for the promoters he respects. This is your only opportunity to enjoy Luciano on what is arguably the island’s best sound system, the main room at Space. Expect high-carat techno for September 9th when Carl welcomes the Swedish sensation Adam Beyer and UMEK on the covered terrace, who is also playing an additional set on Space’ sunset terrace from 10pm. This floor is open from 8pm every Tuesday, by the way, and thus a great opportunity to start early into the night with special sets by selected artists. Look forward to Carl Cox himself

playing housey sunset music there for September 16th. Never change a winning line-up so for the third consecutive year the artists on the bill for the yearly season send-off have stayed more or less the same: Carl has invited DJ Sneak for two sets on this particular night, one closing out the terrace and the warm-up set on the sunset terrace starting at 10pm. Support will come from Just Be, Yousef and the German lady tINI. In the main room Carl is joined by Loco Dice once again, especially remarkable since Loco is on an Ibiza hiatus and was determined to play only on his birthday in August. But who could say no to a man like Carl so Dice fans can look forward to an exclusive night with their idol in the Space main room. Carl and him have been known to go b2b before so we could be in for another pleasant surprise. Don’t miss the emotional closing party of ‘Music is Revolution’ on September 23rd.

BRING ON SEPTEMBER WITH A BOOOM! After last turbulent summer, which contained repeatedly rescheduled opening, low attendance, premature cancellations of weekly parties and persistent rumours of the club’s eviction out of the building it occupies, few people believed Booom would dare to re-open. However, the enthusiasm of Giuseppe Cipriani and the professionalism of his team successfully put the club back on the nightlife map of Ibiza and proved it once again that finally it’s the dramatic turns that make a legendary biography. In the eyes of the audience the future of the venue started to look more promising when Defected plighted their faith with the club, moving to Tuesdays and launching the new Glitterbox night on

Saturdays. Eventually these two parties became standardbearers for Booom, defining it vibes and music policy. The nuance is that the classic house sound, normally associated with Defected, is now championed by Glitterbox, while Tuesdays act as purveyors of more modern and cutting-edge tunes. Being focused on classic house and disco, Glitterbox is not a retro party. It appeals equally to those who started frequenting Ibiza years ago, before techno became omnipresent, and for those who just love their night to be funny and full of smiles. By the way, this is one of the biggest merits of Booom – they managed to create an environment in which people are sincerely having fun.

The line-ups for the remaining Glitterbox parties include Dimitri from Paris and Todd Terry on September 6, Joey Negro and again Dimitri from Paris on September 13, C J Mackintosh, Late Nite Tuff Guy and Horse Meat Disco on September 20. The closing party on September 27 will gather international and local DJ talent in equal proportions: Dimitri From Paris, Arthur Baker, Late Night Tuff Guy, Joey Negro, DJ Pippi, DJ Antz, Mo Funk and Mr Doris. Defected, meanwhile, opt for a deeper, groovier sound with succulent basslines. Agoria and Detroit Swindle on September 2, Cajmere and Luke Solomon on September 9, Kenny Dope and FCL on September 16 and MK with Ben Pearce on September 23 will smoothly lead the season to its climax – the grand closing party scheduled for September 30. THE RISE OF

IBIZA‘S OPEN AIR

MAGIC

Guy Gerber’s Rumors // tINI & The Gang // Anja Schneider’s Mobilee Pool Party // Diynamic Outdoor // Luciano & Friends ...

64

TheClubbingBible.Net

Ibiza wouldn’t be Ibiza without all sorts of open air events: beach parties, pool parties, afterparties… After the crackdown that is still fresh in the islanders’ memories, open airs are slowly coming back. They aren’t big, they aren’t loud, and they are shut down by the police from time to time, but they still happen and make people happy. They are also subject

to time limits: 4pm12am is the slot when Ibiza is normally allowed to dance in the open. In September the weather is gradually getting colder, that’s why every opportunity to enjoy an open air should be grasped immediately and never missed out on. Playa d’en Bossa is a true land of plenty for cool afternoon / evening parties with free entry. tINI & the Gang remains a firm Wednesday fixture, happening at the venue that changed its name from Sirocco to Sands. The vibes remained unaffected though: raw and indigenous, it’s a true haven for those who appreciate lesserknown names in the line-up, such as for example Birdsmakingmachine, Vlada, Pelle &

Roon, Bodelere or Eli Verveine. With the closing planned for October 1st, there is still plenty of time to enjoy this friendly beach gathering. The best moment to arrive is slightly before sunset with the aim to stay till the very end at midnight. Another lady promoter you should definitely pay a visit to is Anja Schneider, who hosts Mobilee pool parties at Santos Hotel every second Monday. Monday afternoon might sound like a risky option for a newcomer event, because it means going against Circo Loco – but for Mobilee it perfectly makes sense, since the crew of the label arrives here directly from their infamous rooftop parties in Barcelona. And actually, Anja’s aim is to bring Barcelona’s vibes to Ibiza to fill the niche that has been left empty on the island so far. The newest boutique hotel in Playa d’en Bossa, Santos, is an ideal location for an intimate pool party in a stylish setting, that’s why it’s highly advisable to drop in here on September 8th to listen to Anja Schneider, Rodriguez Jr. (live) and Re.You. as ‘mobilee All Stars’ and leaves much to imagination. On Sundays the place to be is Beach House – a new hotspot in Playa d’en Bossa, situated near Bahamas Hotel. Cocoon used to make afterhours here when this place was still known as Sal Rossa and looked rather shabby. Now that the venue belongs to the same owner as the infamous El Chiringuito of Es Cavallet, it looks very neat and well-groomed – but what’s more important, as a result of a funny twist of fate it became a new home for Guy Gerber’s Rumors party. In addition to his monthly residency at Pacha, the Israeli DJ was about to launch a weekly event at Plan Be, the relatively new and off-the-radar club in Santa Gertrudis. Unfortunately, Plan Be had to close for legal issues, and that’s how Rumours moved to Beach House. What Gerber normally plays here sounds much more entertaining and beachfriendly than the mysterious morose tunes he

spun last summer at the Wisdom of the Glove, and the dense crowd votes for such a change of mood with their feet. Moving away from Playa d’en Bossa to slightly more remote areas, many hopes were pinned on Cova Santa, the gorgeous restaurant with a big beautiful garden that belongs to Amnesia and is located on the way from Ibiza Town to San José. Initially two series of events were supposed to be going on here in July and August: Luciano & Friends and Diynamic Outdoor. Finally Luciano had to move to Destino, after his opening at Cova Santa was shut down by the police for exceeding noise limitations. As for Solomun, he split his events in two parts – one in Cova Santa and the other one in Destino as well. So the party you can still catch in Cova Santa this season will be Diynamic Outdoor on September 11th with Solomun, H.O.S.H., Adriatique, NTFO and Karmon.

Speaking about Destino, there are two Diynamic Outdoor events ahead, on September 4th and 18th respectively, Luciano & Friends on September 11th and the official closing of the venue on October 8th – the lineups for all of those are to yet to be announced. This elegant yet relaxed party hotel has played host to quite a few exciting events during the season, for example the official afterparties of Cocoon and Loco Dice birthday. At midnight the outdoor fiesta must be stopped, but the tiny Tox club in the basement serves as a perfect carry-on location for those who have enough fuel to go on. Destino belongs to Pacha group and is located at Cap Martinet, which is considerably off the

beaten party track. Given that, it’s important to know two practical things about it. First, they have free buses that take people from and back to San Antonio, Ibiza Town, Figueretas and Playa d’en Bossa. Second, there is a good chance to economize by buying drink ticket packs at the entrance of Destino: while the normal drink price is 11€, the 40€ pack gives you 5 drinks, and the 70€ pack equals in 10 drinks. We wish summer would last forever… But in reality autumn is almost around the corner. So let’s dance till we drop on the beaches and by the pools, as long as the sun is still shining above our heads!

Kölsch The songwriting DJ

It’s the summer of love, everybody! The Ibizan musical scene seems to have a penchant for melancholy, melodic house productions these days. Picking up from Konstantin Sibold’s 2013 hit-remix of “No one gets left behind” many have come up with rather deep and emotional house tracks which fit the island’s atmosphere perfectly. Artists like Tale of Us, Mano le Tough and the Innervision crew with Âme and Dixon are making the rounds in Ibiza, wearing their hearts on their sleeves or rather in their record sleeves. So it’s the perfect mood for Kölsch to make an even bigger impression on our scene than he has already had. Copenhagen born Rune Reilly Kölsch grows up within an artistic hippie family with a songwriting father, an influence that is apparent in most of Kölsch’ tracks. Clever, melodic songwriting is combined with a state-of-the-art electronic production, complete with Kölsch’ own, distinctive signature sounds.

68

TheClubbingBible.Net

It was ‘All that matters’ taken from the melodic autobiographical album ‘1977’ which very much paved the way for Kölsch to tour the world and become known to an appreciative audience. For many THE season anthem of 2012 the melancholy love song with strong vocals and an unforgettable, hypnotising synchline opened many doors of the electronic music scene. It was ‘All that matters’

that led Kölsch to play on the infamous Space terrace for instance, for Rune a “boyhood dream since I started going to Ibiza in 1999. That was what I wanted from life.” Here is an artist who pours his soul into every track, especially on his ‘1977’ album, released on the German Kompakt label. It’s a personal reflection about his upbringing, of him “reminiscing about what shaped me as a kid and into the individual that I am now”. His past - the brickwork of ‘1977’ - shaped into very approachable music, whether you are on the dancefloor, in your living room or on the beach with your headphones on. Kölsch’ all new ‘Cassiopeia’ is already making the rounds on our island, a track he produced together with German Kompakt buddy Gregor Schwellenbach, in which Rune fulfills his longheld dream of producing an electronic track with real strings. The result is simply magical and tailormade for an Ibizan summer. Don’t forget your handkerchiefs when you witness the melancholy and euphoric power of quality house music - when Kölsch is to play in the open air for ‘La Familia’ at Ushuaia on September 14th.

In the summer of 2012, Chad Andrew decided to pack up his belongings and make a life-changing move to Ibiza for a summer season to further his career in a different direction. The proposition came from the two entrepreneurs behind the Capadi Rebels who wanted the DJ on board for their boat party series. The invitation followed after a gig Chad Andrew played for them in BPM, Mexico

70

TheClubbingBible.Net

where a professional bond was formed. Ibiza always works it’s magic and eventually through contacts and friendships made in island adventures, Chad Andrew soon had a headlining slot for Desolat’s lady tINI and her party series “tINI & The Gang” at Playa d’en Bossa beach club Sirocco (now Sands). His production “West” was

one of tINI’s favorite to play out and she scooped the lad as a member of her beach party roster. His name started to appear on line-ups around the island, but also stuck as a regular for the Rebels Boat Battles as well as the Rebels night in Sankeys Ibiza that year, Carnival Cities. One hot summer night in Ibiza he managed to catch the attention of Dissonant label boss, Marc Antona. Shortly after returning to the States, Chad Andrew was contacted by Antona with a request for a release of an EP on the French label. The EP showed a tremendous success reaching number 9 on RA’s top 50 tracks for January 2013. Back to Ibiza for season 2014, Chad Andrew is a regular guest for the Rebels’ famous boat parties who also host the Spektrum in Sankeys on Sundays along the Viva Warriors crew of Steve Lawler. “Chad is a great talent and we‘ve been lucky enough to be working with him since a couple of years now. Year on year he‘s gone from strength to strength which is impressive considering the competitive industry. The future looks very bright and we look forward to booking him at more Rebels events this winter”, says Ash Ahmadi, one of the Capadi Rebels heads. Make sure you check out Chad Andrew on September 9th playing the Capadi Rebels Boat and on September 28th playing the Rebels floor at the closing of Viva Warriors at Sankeys.

Mano LeTough ce for Space Terra th ! Playing the ember 4 pt Se on R. ENTE

PLAY IT TOUGH, MAKE ME DANCE!

Born in Ireland, based in Berlin, Mano Le Tough (real name Niall Mannion) has been making considerable waves in Ibiza since last year. His track ‘Primative People’, created in collaboration with Tale Of Us and remixed by Tale Of Us, became one of the seasondefining tunes of Ibiza 2013 – no one was allowed to tick the “I visited the island!” box without dancing to that mesmerizing combination of melancholic bells, spacedout vocals and the bass, heavily reminiscent of Ten Walls. Gig-wise, in 2013 Le Tough played twice for Circoloco (opening and closing) and once for Kehakuma in September, which was pretty much enough to make Ibiza acquainted with the talented DJ and producer. By the way, booking him is tricky in a certain way: his rider states that the artist accepts only vegetarian meals and

would never condescend to fast food. This summer Mano Le Tough has been snagged by Richie Hawtin to play twice on Space Terrace for ENTER. sharing DJ duties with the likes of Tale Of Us and DJ Tennis back in August, and then again on September 4th with Guti and Blond:ish. His other appearances behind the decks in Ibiza 2014 happened to be in Space as well consisting of a Symmetry event on the Terrace in the beginning of the season. He also took care for the Discoteca together with Pan-Pot and Carl Cox in July.

let their hair down and dance, they make people seriously immerse into an ocean of captivating and deliciously unsettling sounds in a minor key. His debut album, ‘Changing Days’, goes even further in exploring the more mysterious and slightly less danceable aspects of electronic music. This blissfully moody collection of songs saw light in 2013 on ’Permanent Vacation’ and serves as a logical continuation to the slew of EPs that Mano had released on such imprints as Buzzin‘ Fly, Mirau and Internasjonal. He made remixes for Aloe Blacc, Midnight Magic, Tensnake, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and others, but the one that probably rings a bell with the most listeners today should be that on Roisin Murphy’s ‘Simulation’, another ubiquitous hit of 2013. Together with Baikal, Mano runs Maeve record label – established in 2012, it is going at a very cautious pace, releasing on average one 12“ per year, but never compromising with quality. Kristian Beyer of Âme is quoted as saying „Thanks to Mano Le Tough, I have no fears for the future of house“. We can’t but agree that if house music ever finds itself in a scrape, Mano will certainly help to tough it out.

This said, one might imagine Mano delivering a barrage of no-holds-barred techno – and it would be a mistake. His sets are all about tinges and nuances, and instead of simply encouraging the crowd to

The Sound of Âme! Music partnerships form through shared passion and similar vision for a sound or genre and the German duo, Âme was influenced by mutual respect for soul, techno, and any beautiful or unconventional music out there. The duo has been changing the course of dance music in the last decade with futuristic, forward thinking, inspirational productions and performances. Today they are some of the highest in demand DJ’s in the scene. Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann, aka Âme, met at a record shop in their hometown Karlsruhe and organically a strong bond was formed through a shared passion for Chicago house, Detroit techno, and soulful jazz. Âme, marked the beginning of their career with releases on the label Sonar Kollektiv, which was a strong influence for the later formation of Innervisions record label. In 2003 their deep house productions were collected

Artist Check in a self-titled debut album released on the same Sonar Kollektiv. The duo’s experimental nature and desire to constantly explore and reinvent style of sound, caught the attention of Defected Records and the hit single “Rej” came out shortly after. In 2006, Âme joined forces with Dixon and Henrik Schwarz for the production of the classic now track “Where We At”, featuring the vocals of Derric Carter. The partnership between all continued on

further with formation of Innervisions, a record label ran by Dixon, Âme, and Henrik Schwarz. The group also started a web store, which was a great opportunity for fans to stay in tune with the latest happening around the label or purchase promotional merchandise and records. Beyer and Wiedemann’s latest production with Sailor & I “Turn Around”, released on Life And Death June, 2014, is another astonishing example of their constantly evolving sound and skills. Âme’s song writing is a mixture of different elements and orchestral instrumentation, which can be noticed in their live performances. A night with Âme is a journey to the future, an ecstatic and enlightening experience of musical genius. As part of the Innervisions family, their show cases in Berlin’s Panorama Bar are legendary and a not to be missed experience of a lifetime. Naturally, the duo is an inevitable part of the Ibiza club scene and has already performed this summer for We Love Space, Solomun+1 and Coocoon, some of the key nights on the island. With September kicking off make sure to catch Âme on September 4th at Pacha for Solomun +1 and September 24th at DC10 for Paradise.

ADIÓS SUMMER 2014! characters emerged and others passed. We saw possibly the resurgence of some great open air party reigniting the Balearic vibes with Cova Santa and Destino the obvious high profile targets. Against an ubercommercial, bling-bling society the Capadi boat sets sail every Tuesday and Friday riding the underground-wave into the sunset. Well known DJs from Cocoon, Cadenza, Desolat and also Minus have sailed with the Capadi boat. ‚Thank god we are rebels‘

is a forward thinking concept and it is this progressive flair that has made the Rebels catamaran party one of Ibiza‘s most sought after boats.
