Cicatrizes do Pano, 2013 Scars on Cloth - 2013 São Paulo, Brazil.

Cicatrizes do Pano is the title of my art interventions on cloth and it is based in my family roots. I’ve started this research listening to old stories about my Japanese ancestors, who carry in their skin the memories created by the estrangement from the tradition and our own Japanese history, since they arrived in Brazil. Given that, the fabric that I use as raw material to the accomplishment of this project brings, metaphorically, the remembrance of the lived skin. As a tool I use Shibori – Japanese dyeing and pleating techniques applied in silk and cotton – marking the cloth with sewing and binding plus intuitive colors selection, which reveals in the final occasional pleats and holes that become scars in the fabric. All the technique is handmade: the sewing/binding, the mix of primary colors pigments, the dyeing process in buckets or pans, as well as the dry process made in clothesline. photos: Caio Vasques, São Paulo, Brasil.

There are long histories for every place in the world. And people have been searching for their roots in those histories. I think particularly those artists who focus on textiles have been creating their works based upon those roots of their own. Yuh Okano Glowing Fabric 2004
