My friend Manu always organized a big party to celebrate his birthday. His house was beautiful; it had a big garden with a pond where birds bathed in summer. This year’s party theme was: Pirates! We all prepared our fancy costumes with delight and my parents helped me make a big hat, an eyepatch and a green fabric parrot.

Manu’s Mom said that this year there was going to be a big surprise. And so it was! From out of a small basket jumped a beautiful caramel coloured puppy with a cute pink tongue and black heartshaped mark on its forehead. We all exclaimed: Awww, it’s so adorable! The party was a lot of fun. The puppy was named Kino and became the center of attention.

When I got back home, tired and happy, I ran into my parent’s arms saying: ‘I want a doggy.’ ‘Why is that, sweetie?’ asked my Mom with surprise-I had never shown much interest in having an animal at home. ‘Manu was given a beautiful puppy for his birthday, caramel-coloured and sooo soft…-No doubt, I was in love with Kino. ‘Oh, I understand Anne… but a doggy is not a toy, you have to walk it every day several times, take care of it for the rest of its life… ‘Of course! I don’t mind at all, I’ll do whatever is necessary.’ 8

It wasn’t easy convincing Mom but after a few months of behaving very well and achieving excellent school marks, I made it! One morning we made a trip to the mall’s pet store. A large crowd always gathered at the shop window, tapping on it and smiling at the bouncy little puppies. But today there was a dog that looked different from the rest; it was bigger, it had droopy ears and was sadly curled up at the back of the showcase. I overheard one man saying: ‘Oh, that one is too big now, no one will want it and they will take it away… it will be replaced for another tiny cute one.’

Suddenly this idea came into my head: ‘Mom, and what happens with the doggies that nobody buys?’ ‘Well, probably they take them to a dog pound or something similar’ ‘And what happens in the dog pound?’ ‘They live there and they might get adopted to finally live in a new home…’

‘And… what happens if they aren’t adopted, Mom?’ ‘Mmm… don’t worry about that, Anne… Well, have you decided which doggy are we buying?’ All of a sudden, this didn’t seem right to me. 13
