BALANCING COMMUNITY AND COMMERCE Chesterfield is a relatively new city, yet rich with history. Incorporated in 1988, the city recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Since its earliest days, its residents, civic and business leaders have worked together to create an outstanding community in which to live, work and play. While some cities offer attractive neighborhoods or bustling centers of commerce, Chesterfield successfully

offers its residents both. Within this 32-square-mile canvas of rolling hills and lush green valleys, gleaming office buildings and mega shopping centers coexist peacefully amid tree-lined neighborhoods, historic landmarks and equestrian training facilities. You can live in a beautiful home; send your children to top-rated public and private schools; take advantage of excellent facilities for senior citizens, and enjoy numerous places of worship, premier shopping centers, historic and cultural attractions, health clubs, parks and attractive Class-A office space. Perhaps nowhere is meticulous city planning so evident as in the thriving retail center along the I-64/40 corridor known as Chesterfield Valley. The “Valley” is home to the longest retail power center in the nation - as well as numerous fast food and fine dining restaurants and the only Bentley/Lamborghini/Maserati dealer in the Midwest. In 2013, the Valley became home to two new premium outlet centers that brought nearly 150 additional stores to the city. The beauty of the Valley is that Chesterfield residents enjoy all of its conveniences at arm’s length because the Valley is literally in a valley, nicely separated from the city’s residential areas. City planning is also responsible for Chesterfield’s ability to balance old and new, community and commercial. A world-class corporate airport operates

sk Chesterfield residents what makes their city so special, and some will talk about the city’s proximity to the highway, shopping, restaurants, area attractions and great schools. Others will describe the beautiful neighborhoods, parks and trees - the green space that is so desirable in a community just 25 minutes from downtown St. Louis. Others will tout the small-town friendliness of a rapidly growing residential and business community that is home to historic family farms. Since the 2011 opening of the Chesterfield Amphitheater, you will hear its citizens rave about the city’s culture. Perhaps what makes this city so different from the rest is its ability to blend a family-friendly environment with robust commercial growth and vibrant cultural experiences.

next to a pumpkin farm. Specialty shops in established neighborhoods offer an alternative to the megashopping destinations in the Valley. Beautiful horse farms grace a winding, country road just minutes from a new Fortune 500 headquarters. This balance of commercial growth with community values has made Chesterfield a prime location in which to conduct business. The city has more than 2,000 businesses, which employ more than 72,000 individuals. A thriving executive community operates in Chesterfield Village, a 1,500-acre mixed-use planned development located in the city’s urban core. Hundreds of light industrial and manufacturing firms populate Chesterfield Valley while major corporations, modern medical centers, research facilities, manufacturing companies and high-end retail stores churn the city’s economy alongside small family businesses and boutiques. The vision of the City’s future is continuously moving forward. Sachs Properties, the developer of Chesterfield Village, is planning the new Downtown Chesterfield. This 100-acre commercial/residential development will be adjacent to the 38-acre Central Park and Chesterfield Amphitheater, Chesterfield Mall, Samuel C. Sachs Library Branch and

A CULTURAL PLAYGROUND In recognition of its outstanding arts programs and public art collection, the Missouri Arts Council named Chesterfield a Creative Community in 2011. The city’s most prized art piece is “The Awakening,” a sculpture of monumental proportions by J. Seward Johnson. Weighing 4,700 pounds, spanning 70 feet in length and rising 17 feet into the air, this cast aluminum sculpture of a giant emerging from the ground beckons children and adults alike to climb its massive arms and legs. In 2009, the city partnered with Chesterfield Arts, a nonprofit community arts agency, in creating a Public Art Master Plan to support its commitment to a vibrant cultural community. Since then, residents have seen numerous temporary and permanent pieces of public art spring up in the city. In addition to visual arts, Chesterfield residents enjoy performing arts in the city, including free summer concerts at Faust Park and at the Chesterfield Amphitheater. The city also hosts free movie nights at the Amphitheater and some ticketed events of national headliners, such as Scotty McCreery, American Idol winner. In 2014, the Chesterfield

WHAT IS CHESTERFIELD? A businessman stops by the Smokehouse Market for a sandwich and a root beer, before heading back to his office in Chesterfield Village. A couple watch as their children spin gleefully on a 1929 carousel at Faust Park, then hop in the car to take

care of back-to-school shopping in the Valley. Later, the businessman runs into the young family, who happen to be his neighbors, at a free concert at the Amphitheater in Central Park. This is Chesterfield: a city at the confluence of community, convenience and culture.

Chesterfield truly is a place where history, tradition, progress and family values have joined as one to become a must-visit destination.

HISTORY

M

ost cities grow from a single "named community," but not Chesterfield. Within Chesterfield's present-day city limits, there were once six towns and communities, each with its own post office. In addition, there were two other communities (Orrville and Centaur Station), on the western edge of Chesterfield, that were also influential in Chesterfield's early development. One by one, post offices closed or transferred, until only the Chesterfield post office remained. As a result, Chesterfield absorbed the history of the people and the communities that once existed within its city limits. To appreciate Chesterfield's diverse and colorful background, one must look at the bigger picture. Bellefontaine (French for “beautiful spring”), or as the locals called it, "Hilltown," was settled in the early 1800s by the Bates, Conway, and Long families as a

predominantly German farming community. The first post office was established as Bellemonte (“beautiful mountain”) in 1851. Eighteen years later, in 1869, the town and post office names were changed to Bellefontaine. Rinkel's Antioch Baptist Market was a site for years, at the Church on intersection of present-day Olive Wildhorse Street Road and Chesterfield Creek Road Parkway, where Charlie Gitto’s Restaurant now stands. The town of Lake started out as "Hog Hollow" around 1860. The post office was established as Hog Hollow in 1871, but a year later the town's name was changed to what some thought was a more suitable name of Lake. Zierenberg's General Merchandise and Saloon (built around 1880) was a well-known landmark at the 18-mile marker on Olive Street Road. The original structure, destroyed by fire in 1918, was replaced with a brick building doubling as a filling station. Also within the building were a blacksmith shop,

What is now Chesterfield was once home to six small towns, each of which had its own post office, and of course, its own history.

The Longs, Lawrence and William, arrived in 1797, settling on Spanish land grants. In 1816, William and Polly Long sold Post 400 acres, including their house. Justus Post would eventually acquire 21,204 acres, some for as little as $1.25 per acre. According to records, Post bought land by the mile. Post laid out the original community of Chesterfield, straddling Wild Horse Creek Road, between

1815. It is said he came here possessing an estate of $12,000, mostly cash, and an IOU from the government in the amount of $1,000 for services rendered during the War of 1812. St. Louis City proved to be good for social advancement but was not to Posts’ liking. Within one year he moved his family to a 170-acre farm alongside the Missouri River in an area that would eventually be known as Chesterfield Valley. He paid $14 per acre for this farm that included houses, barns, stables, a ferry and good, cleared fields.

saloon, ice house, weigh station and rooms for travelers in the upstairs area. The building stands today on the northeast corner of Olive and Hog Hollow, across from The Art Gallery of Hog Hollow. The town of Gumbo was located near the current intersection of Chesterfield Airport Road and Long Road. This area is generally referred to as “The Valley” by locals and long-time residents. The name “Gumbo” is derived mainly from the soil, which although very rich and silty, when wet becomes a sticky, almost clay-like material. A substance very similar to gravel was made from Gumbo mud and used for streets and sidewalks in Forest Park during the 1904 World's Fair. Gumbo's post office operated from 1882 to 1907. Monarch (earlier called Atherton, then Eatherton) was one of the Cutline goes here up to two settlements to spring up along the lines. Cutline goes here up to two lines. Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Rail Line, when it came through the valley in the late 1800s. William Sutton's General Store stood on the northwest corner of Eatherton and Centaur Roads. The post office operated there from 1895 to 1907, when the mail was transferred to Chesterfield. Bonhomme had a colorful life. (The name is French for "good man".) This small community, located at the far western end of Olive Street Road, was close to the Howell's Ferry Landing. It boasted of a blacksmith shop, grist mill, store, post office and Fenn's saw mill; but all of it was washed away in the late 1800s by the Missouri River. Bonhomme was a popular name in St. Louis County; Bonhomme streets, roads, creeks, churches and townships are still so-named. However, this Bonhomme is the only one that ever had its own post office, operating from 1851to 1895. Justus Post’s Chesterfield, as a named community, dates to 1818. Colonel Justus Post arrived in the St. Louis area, along with wife, Eliza, and his two small children on November 6,

Baxter and Wilson. Wild Horse Creek Road was named Main Street, with North and South streets on either side. The cross streets were named Mulberry, Locust, Walnut, Prune, Vine, Chestnut and Oak. However, the town plat was not recorded until 1838. Post served one term as a Missouri State Senator and remained in the area for nearly 30 years before relocating to southern Illinois. In 1877 (after the railroad came through the valley), Christian Burkhardt acquired 21 acres where Olive Street Road crossed the railroad. There he laid out Burkhardt's Subdivision, around Drew Depot. The original community of Chesterfield, founded by Post, gradually relocated to be along the railroad at Drew Station. Christian died in 1898, but his son Edward and Edward's wife Lena continued this era of Chesterfield's evolvement. Edward laid out Burkhardt Place, on the south side of Olive Street Road. He built a row of twelve quaint brick/tile bungalows in the 1918 to 1925 period. Edward also opened a mercantile store bearing his name, and was president of the Farmer's State Bank of Chesterfield from 1914 until 1923. The Farmer’s Bank Building, (established circa 1914), with its unique Mesker pressed-metal facade, is the oldest commercial structure in Chesterfield and the only surviving rural bank building in St. Louis County. It was acquired by architects Lauren Strutman and Dick Busch in 1999 and restored to its original glory. In mid 2000, it became Chesterfield's fourth property to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Chesterfield Historical Commission has recognized this Chesterfield location as a historic district, with appropriate markers. The Farmer's State Bank building, which also housed the post office and telephone switch board, at the intersection of Chesterfield Airport Road and Baxter Road, along with the row of bungalows, and the nearby 1920s Slaughter House (now the Don Wiegand Studio), constitute what we can best see, touch and identify with as our city's heritage.

As previously mentioned, the community of Orrville had much influence on Chesterfield. Just south of Wild Horse Creek Road, along Eatherton Road (in what is now Wildwood), one can see a half-dozen of Orrville's original structures. John and James Orr came from Scotland. John's son, Robert, would become one of Orrville's leading citizens. He owned most of the land in town, was justice of the peace for six years and, along with his wife Laura, donated the land on which the present Antioch Baptist Church was built in 1860 (at 18319 Wild Horse Creek Road). The Hoppenberg-Fick General Store and Post Office, circa 1867, still stands. Robert Orr was the first postmaster (1858-1871). William Parks Bacon reportedly had the finest house in Orrville - it is still there. Chesterfield's African American community (Westland Acres on Church Road), had its beginnings with the first Antioch Baptist Church, founded in 1841. At that time, white and black worshiped together. When the new Antioch Baptist Church was built in 1860, the African American community took over the original structure and re-named it Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Reportedly, African Americans worshiped at Mt. Pleasant until the 1920s, then gradually migrated to their present location on Church Road and built the Union Baptist Church in 1922. Two events brought Centaur into being: the railroad and Anton Leiweke. In 1891, Leiweke, a deserter from the German Army, organized the Centaur Lime Company and founded Centaur Station. The company employed about 100 people from 1891 to 1928, until it went bankrupt. Centaur Station was settled mostly by Germans. They established their own church (St. Anthony's Parish), first meeting on the third floor of Leiweke's lumber barn and later, sharing a one-room frame school house. This little congregation would later be the start of

They built Ascension's first church in 1923-24; this structure is now named Godfrey Chapel. Howell Island lay just across the Missouri River channel from Centaur. In 1900, Anton Leiweke purchased the island, cleared it and began farming. He brought farmers and their supplies to and from the island by barge and a small vessel named "Honeybell". One of the four structures in Chesterfield that is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is Governor

Bates' Thornhill. This building dates to the 1815-1817 period. The Governor Bates site was part of the first 98 acres donated by Leicester and Mary Faust to the St.Louis County Parks system in 1968. This was the beginning of Faust Park. Thornhill is the oldest standing Governor's residence in Missouri. Bates was Missouri's second Governor; serving while the State Capitol was still located in St. Charles. Bates died in office of pleurisy at age 48, after serving less than nine months as Governor. He is buried at Thornhill Estate. Visitors to Faust Park may visit the historical site. Among Chesterfield's architectural treasures are 20 homes over 100 years old. These "Century Houses" were recognized and their current owners presented with appropriate framed certificates at ceremonies held at Faust Park's Thornhill. Chesterfield further preserves its heritage in the form of the Faust Park Historic Village, and the 1997 acquisition of the remaining 102 acres of the original Leicester Faust Estate. Chesterfield, beyond being one of St. Louis County's most successful and fastest growing communities, also has a colorful past; a past we can all explore and appreciate - by taking a few minutes to get off the beaten path. For a complete history of Chesterfield, read “Chesterfield, Missouri-From Untamed Wilderness to Thriving Municipality.” Written by members of the Chesterfield Historical Society. hesterfield’s convenient location is supported by an extensive transportation infrastructure. While the 32-square miles of the city is cradled in a rolling green landscape of open valleys and landscaped developments, it is only 25 minutes from downtown St. Louis. Interstate 64 East gives quick access to I-270 (the loop around St. Louis), which then provides connections to I-44, I-55 and I-70. Drivers can continue straight on I-64 East to reach other West County suburbs and also Clayton, the County seat of St. Louis County, or continue straight into the city of St. Louis. I-64 West provides access to St. Charles County, just across the Missouri River. There are seven interchanges off of Interstate 64 that provide quick access to major local streets such Highway 141, Chesterfield Parkway, Baxter Road, Clarkson/Olive and Long Road. Chesterfield Parkway is the loop around the central business and shopping district, including Chesterfield Mall. Chesterfield Airport Road parallels I-64 in the western part of Chesterfield and is the access road for hundreds of businesses in “the Chesterfield valley.” Wild Horse Creek Road extends to the western boundary of the city and winds through rolling hills dotted with stately homes. For out-of-town guests, there are a host of local taxis that provide prompt and courteous service, while many hotels offer shuttle service to Lambert Airport and within the community. Metro provides local and city-wide bus service, which connects to the MetroLink light rail system. Visit metrostlouis.org for more details.

ever was the real estate cliché about location so true than with Chesterfield. The nearly 48,000 residents who live in modest single-family homes in the city’s older neighborhoods, or in newer luxury homes situated on expansive lawns and featuring custombuilt pools, three-car garages and spacious floor plans, all enjoy the convenience of living in one of the most ideally located suburbs in the St. Louis area. Because it literally straddles I-64/40, it is convenient to all that the area has to offer. Chesterfield is just 25 minutes from downtown St. Louis, but its residents may find few reasons (except for a Cards-Cubs game) to leave their fair city. They are in the envious position of living in a picturesque landscape – a Tree City, USA! – while being only a stone’s throw from the area’s best shopping, schools, businesses, parks, entertainment and places of worship. Many choose Chesterfield for its top-rated public school districts: Parkway and Rockwood.

Both were recently recognized by the Washington Post as one of America’s Most Challenging High Schools. Chesterfield is also home to a number of excellent private and parochial schools, including Maryville University, a private, nationally ranked liberal arts university, and Logan University, one of the nation’s largest chiropractic colleges. Abundant “green space” colors not only fill residential neighborhoods, but are ever present within commercial areas. While other communities must choose between preserving a quiet, 23

HOME residential community and opening their cities to the amenities of a robust commercial hub, Chesterfield enjoys the best of both worlds. The majority of the area’s shopping, restaurants and businesses are located in the booming Chesterfield Valley or along the Chesterfield Parkway loop. These clustering commercial enterprises in this way allow residents to enjoy proximity to the conveniences of a bustling city, while preserving that sense of relaxed community that you expect in a much more rural locale. Locally and throughout the Midwest, the name “Chesterfield” evokes a certain level of prestige. The community reflects a balance of modest and upscale single-family homes, apartments, traditional and villa condominiums, as well as retirement, assisted living and nursing care communities. Chesterfield offers the perfect place for everyone.

SINGLE FAMILY LIVING When it comes to selecting a home in Chesterfield, choices are aplenty. A drive through the city’s neighborhoods on a warm weekend afternoon reveals children riding bikes through tree-lined subdivisions, homeowners mowing lawns or planting flowers; luxury homes situated far back from the main road on lush, rolling lawns; apartment dwellers playing tennis or basking poolside; and dog walkers strolling near condominiums and attached homes, happily not mowing their lawns. While the area's reputation for excellent schools, convenience and beautiful neighborhoods has brought an explosion of new housing, more established neighborhoods continue to attract young families drawn to their larger lot sizes and undeveloped common grounds. Established neighborhoods on the east end of town include: the Village of Greentrails,

On the west side of town, the popular Chesterfield Farms & Estates subdivision bustles with children who attend the two elementary schools within walking distance. Just down the road, similar neighborhoods include Baxter Pointe, Chesterfield Estates and Somerset. Those looking for traditional homes built in the past 25 years that still boast ample yards will find them in communities such as: Wilson Manor, Wilson Farm Estates, The Forest, Kingspointe, Greystone and Countryside. Just as the size, cost and character of Chesterfield residences vary so, too, do the architectural styles. This Midwest town features its share of traditional two-story brick homes with stately center-hall floor plans. But newer developments boast more open space, vaulted ceilings, deep-pour lower levels and atrium ranches. Popular features with many high-end, luxury homes are stone and brick facades, custom outdoor lighting and beautifully landscaped pools. Newer subdivisions that offer a variety of high-end offerings include: Wilson Creek, Eagle Crest, Pacland Place, Fox Hill Farms, Manors at Schoettler Valley and Will’s Trace. One of the newest developments, The Reserve at Chesterfield Village, reflects a commitment to preserving as much natural forest growth as possible with homes backing up to abundant common ground and walking trails. This neighborhood is walking distance from the city’s Central Park, the cornerstone of what will eventually be the new Downtown Chesterfield: a mixed-use development on more than 100 acres that will feature retail shops, residential dwellings, office space, restaurants, entertainment venues and cultural amenities, including a municipal performing arts center. The developer, Sachs Properties, describes it as a “central core” with an “urban feel.”

CHESTERFIELD VILLAGE At the core of Chesterfield’s thriving economy is Chesterfield Village – the first and largest master-planned community in the St. Louis Metro area. Developer Louis Sachs, former Chairman of Sachs Properties, initiated Chesterfield Village in 1967. It transformed the far western reaches of St. Louis County into an affluent, vibrant mixed-use community that encompasses 1,500 acres. With an expected completion date of 2020, Chesterfield Village has a projected cumulative capital investment value in excess of $5 billion. To date, more than $2 billion has been invested in its creation, including road improvements and, most notably, the three-mile-long Chesterfield Parkway loop. Chesterfield Village also has 2,600 residences in eight major developments that provide a variety of lifestyle choices– from estate homes to condominiums and apartments. Its exquisite landscaping and approximately 500 acres of green space define the community. At the nexus of I-64 and Olive/Clarkson Chesterfield Village has an impressive array of low- and mid-rise office buildings with 1 million square feet of space and approximately 200 businesses. In addition, it encompasses the entire 1.3 million-square-foot Chesterfield Mall, with the 14-screen AMC Megaplex Theatre. This area is home to more than 170 retailers and 14 restaurants, including P.F. Chang’s, Stoney River, Ya Ya’s Euro Bistro, Cheeburger Cheeburger, Macaroni Grill and The Cheesecake Factory, along with local favorites Charlie Gitto’s and EdgeWild Restaurant & Winery.

A host of houses of worship are either within or close to Chesterfield, including a Mormon Temple at Chesterfield's eastern border. In addition to regularly scheduled services, many of these houses of worship offer life-centered activities such as child-care, Sunday school, summer religious study, singles activities, senior citizen functions, women's ministries and sports activities - not to mention a full range of charitable services to the community and world-wide. Many area houses of worship emphasize the importance of the family unit and even organize “Family Nights” at the ballpark or other cultural events. Most denominations have organized teen and senior programs that arrange regular outings. For those who enjoy music, several houses of worship offer a wide variety of music ministries, from a full sanctuary choir to ensembles and groups performing seasonal plays and vocal quartets. The Lord of Life Lutheran Church has a unique 10-ringer choir group that plays handbells at least once a month for their worship service. The city's many denominations offer the opportunity to share fellowship and a greater sense of community. Here is a list of many houses of worship located in Chesterfield or in close proximity:
