St. Louis Clinical Trials Do you know these FACTS about Alzheimer’s disease? • At age 65, there’s a 1 in 8 chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD) • That risk increases to a 1 in 2 chance at age 85 • There is no cure for AD…and no way to delay its symptoms There is, however, a way to get involved in increasing the overall understanding of this condition. The TOMMORROW study is a clinical research study seeking healthy senior participants between the ages of 65 and 83 to help us learn more about the early phase of AD.

Get Fit And Feel GREAT
in
2015 By Robin Garrison Leach
I
f you’re like most Americans, your number one New Year’s resolution is the same every year. Losing weight and becoming healthier top the list of things we should aspire to in 2015. But if you’re like me, you can list dozens of reasons why a Twinkie is a lot more enjoyable than 20 minutes on the treadmill. Unfortunately, our lifestyles have made over 60% of adults either overweight or downright obese. That, coupled with a sedentary lifestyle, is a recipe for health problems and a shorter life. St. Charles County offers a lot of ways to get yourself up and running toward keeping your resolution to get fit. With over 45 health and fitness clubs in the area, you’re surrounded by ways to get started. Most of the centers in our county are businesses that require payment, and prices vary widely. In addi-

tion, we have a myriad to opportunities for good-oldfashioned exercise in our county parks and trails. WHICH CLUB IS RIGHT FOR YOU? How do you choose a program or club best suited to your lifestyle, age, and fitness level? This is an important consideration, since your commitment to a regular routine depends on your level of comfort and wellbeing. Some fitness centers can seem intimidating to those of us whose sum total of daily activity consists of climbing into the car, working all day, and
on location to give you’re a tour and answer your questions whenever you stop by. If not, you may want to look elsewhere. And, by dropping in, your best view of the facility may be when you are not expected. Location matters: if you have to drive out of your usual route to get to the club, you will find reasons to skip going. Check the hours of operation to make sure your daily schedule will mesh. Look around the place: Is it clean and well-maintained? Do the machines look to be in good condition? Check the locker room and the bathrooms as well as the main areas. It is important to know who will be in attendance when you’re working out. Are the employees knowl-

Shop for a health club as you would a car. Look at the ads and prices. Check for “hidden costs”many require first and last months’ payment upfront, as well as a “processing fee”. This may not be mentioned in the initial information. Take a spin around a few of the places that look like a good fit for you. Is the staff familiar with various levels of fitness and eager to make you feel comfortable in your program? Don’t be afraid to ask for references-most clubs will be happy to refer you to other members who can give an endorsement of their facility. Make sure the staff is available to spend time showing you how

each machine works and to watch you as you use it for the first time. WHAT TO EXPECT FOR YOUR MONEY A number of health facilities offer personal fitness sessions to new members. For a fee, a trainer will develop a program for you and give one-on-one time to help you “jump start” your routine. This may be helpful for you. But don’t feel pressured to enroll. Staff should help you learn to use all machines free of charge and, while they won’t spend a lot of time with you, their role is to be there to answer your questions. Classes are always available-in a variety of levels and at various times-to keep things interesting. Most, if not all, are included in your monthly or yearly fee.

START SLOW TO PREVENT INJURY AND BURNOUT Most doctors recommend a starting workout routine of 20-30 minutes, 3-4 times a week. Start slowly. Vary what you do: treadmill or other weight-bearing exercise one session, muscle toning machines or weights the next. Expect some soreness when you first begin, but extreme pain may indicate you’ve overdone it. Check with your doctor to make sure you’re ready to begin an exercise program. Then, with the New Year staring you square in the face, jump into your car and visit one of the many fitness businesses in our area.

alentine’s Day seems to be increasingly about spending money on dining out at expensive restaurants, fancy chocolates in heart shaped boxes, a dozen or more red roses, or other expensive gifts, as well as a fancy card. The original intent of the holiday is to say “I Love You”, not to spend a ton of money. So this year how about giving a gift from the heart that doesn’t break the budget, yet still says “I Love You”.
Page 22
CELEBRATE
VALENTINE ’ S DAY ON A BUDGET
Perhaps one or more of these ideas will work for you, or spark an idea of your own:
1
Leave “Love Notes” all over. Write up lots of notes (pink sticky notes would work well) that tell your Valentine why you love them. The reasons could be romantic, amusing, or both. Stick in various locations, such as the bathroom mirror, a coat pocket, the sock drawer, the refrigerator, steering wheel of the car ... you get the idea.
2
Instead of buying a dozen red roses, how about one single red rose in a simple vase. Tie a bow around the vase and attach a love note or poem. The rose doesn’t have to be fresh. A beautiful ceramic, glass or lovely silk rose is long lasting - symbolizing your lasting love.
3
Make up a basket filled with paraphernalia for a romantic evening at home: candles, hot chocolate mix and mugs, or wine and wineglasses, romantic CDs, and some snacks. If you have a fireplace, make a fire (or turn on the gas logs!). If not, set out a profusion of candles. Put on your romantic music in the background ... and just relax and enjoy.
4
If snuggling in front of the fireplace isn’t your thing, then perhaps watching a romantic movie is more your style. Your basket could contain popcorn and other snacks, liquid refreshment, and a few movies. If you don’t have some favorites on hand, go to the library and pick out some DVDs.
5
Rather than giving the traditional chocolates in a heart shaped box, make your own Valentine Sweets gift. Buy a large mug, bowl or trinket box in pink, red or white and fill it with Hershey Hugs and Kisses. This is surely an inexpensive, romantic and delicious gift.
6 7
Make a handmade Valentine’s Day card with a note inside with all the things you love about your Valentine. Bring out old photo albums and spend the evening reliving special events in your life. If you don’t have an album, make this the year to start one, and then add to it each year. Begin a tradition to look at it every Valentine’s Day.
8
Here is a bit of a twist on the “Love Coupons Booklet” that many people like to make. Make the coupons, but don’t put them into a book. Instead decorate or even laminate each coupon and place them around the house. Then leave a trail of Hershey Kisses and Hugs from one coupon to the next. Decorate a small bucket for your Valentine to place the candy and coupons in while collecting them.
9
Shop thrift stores Mom’s Family Resale is the place to explore. You can get wine glasses, mugs, trinket 22
boxes, heart shaped pillows, baskets, photo albums, vases, silk flowers, and more at budget friendly prices. They will also help you put together gift baskets to match your budget, starting at $5.
10
Spend time as a family. Spend the day playing games, making Valentine’s cookies or cupcakes, or check out books from the local library. Check out amazingmoms.com for a great list of creative easy games.
11
Discover your City. Spend the day visiting local landmarks and museums. Or spend the day outside and go ice skating. Carry a thermos of hot chocolate and a box of home-made cookies.
12
Of course if your budget does allow a night out, then consider one of these favorite restaurants- Miss Aimee B’s, Rendezvous Cafe, Magpie’s, Fratelli’s, La Chata, Brick Oven, Pickelman’s, Stefanina’s or the many other fine affordable restaurants in St. Charles. You can always do lunch instead of dinner to save dollars. Or just go out for coffee and desssert. By Gail Hess

ROCK ‘n ROLL © Michael Grafman 2014. All rights reserved • mrginvests@gmail.com Renowned K-SHE DJ, Steve Rosen at mixing console
NOW...
THEN...
Meet Steve Rosen One of the Groundbreaking St. Louis Disc Jockeys from the Late 1960s Michael: I've known Steve Rosen for over some 40 plus years and am pleased to share his connection to St. Louis. Steve was one of the first disc jockeys at KSHE in the formative years back in the late '60s. Michael: Steve, please tell St. Louis how you got started in broadcasting? Steve Rosen: I wanted to be in radio from the age of 12. I used to listen to KXOK, and talk into my small AM radio like it
was a Mike. When I was 14, I built a small power AM station in my basement, and would broadcast from there. The signal would only go about a mile, but it taught me so much. When KSHE became rock back in 1967, I knew that my dream was to work there. It was not until spring of 1968, when I met Shelley Grafman at the KXOK Fun Fair. He was the sales manager at KSHE, and was also new to the radio business. About 3 or 4 weeks later I called KSHE pray-
ing for a job there. I called on a Saturday, and asked who the GM was? I was told that the new GM was Shelley Grafman. For some reason, the name did not ring a bell, but he picked up his phone, and said " Hi There Steve Rosen.” Well, after a few seconds I remembered who this man was. I asked him if there was anyway I could get a job there, he said to come in early Monday morning, and we will talk. I did not sleep the entire weekend, and Monday, I walked into his office, and we started talking. I was offered the 1Am - 5 AM shift for $2.50 an hour. I was in so much shock, I could of cared less how much money I made, in fact I would have paid KSHE to work there. The station was trying very
hard to make ends meet, but it was a very hard time for any FM station, especially a Rock and Roller Michael: What is your connection to St. Louis, in your words, with the people, the industry, and our city? Steve Rosen: I was so lucky to get into radio at such a young age. I received my first job spinning records at KRCH-FM. I moved to other stations, and my experience grew. When I heard KSHE go rock in 1967, I KNEW I had to work there or else. Michael: What is your most memorable broadcasting experience in St. Louis?

Michael: What are some of your favorite bands?
Michael: Share with us one of your early live interviews
Steve Rosen: That is such a hard question since I like so many groups the list would be a mile long.
Steve: I remember a small group coming into town to play at a local club, and I had not really heard of them. I was doing a live interview on the air with them, and as they came into the studio door, I would ask each member their names, so I could remember them when we spoke live. I asked one of the band members his name, and he said ' Rod Stewart.” I had never heard his name in my life! I can tell you story, after story just like this. People and artists who's careers were made by KSHE playing their music, and giving others a chance. We all made history, and at the time did not know why, or what we were doing, but one thing was, we all cared, respected, and gave a damn about the listener, and each other. The early days of KSHE was a part of my life that I will, and can never forget. To have been one of the people that started this historic event is beyond my comprehension. I am one of the last original KSHE announcers still alive, and I continue to do whatever I can to keep the memories of the best time in history alive. Today, radio is nothing like it was 47 years ago, all things change, but nothing will change KSHE.
Michael: What do you do with your free time, as if you have any!? Steve Rosen: I am retired, however I now do producing, and on air work for Clear Channel here in Oklahoma City. I was also in TV for many years as a director. I now do part time work for the ION TV network. I do quality control for production and editing for shows like Cold Case, Criminal Minds, Law and Order, Burn Notice, and feature films. Michael: Talk about KSHE and its uniqueness back in the late '60s. K-SHE Promo Photo, 1969 Shelley Grafman, VP of Operations, at his office in 1980
Steve Rosen: The most important part of my radio life was when I met Shelley Grafman at that KXOK Fun Fair. I cannot put into words what it was like to work there back then, and what a wonderful man Shelley was. He gave me, and so many others a chance of a lifetime. I will always hold him very dear to me. I also remember interviewing so many rock artist that
at the time, were just starting out, and were unknown. Rod Stewert. Nazz, Bob Seeger, Sammy Hager, REO, Michael McDonald, Chuck Berry, and so many more. I would have given anything to have recorded, and taped all of those interviews I did. Michael: Who was most instrumental, in St. Louis, in building your career? Steve Rosen: Shelley Grafman, The Groove Lamp, The KSHE Window, and the 66 Drive In. Michael: Which other markets have you worked in? Steve Rosen: Denver, Phoenix, Tuscon, Breckenridge Colo, Cortez Colo, Oklahoma City.
Steve: KSHE was so different than all of the other radio stations at the time. Many reasons were that FM rock was unheard of, and we were one of the very first FM stations to play rock. Another main reason was that the announcers back then were very open to new music, and ideas, and gave a damn about the listener and the artist. We began to play music and artists that other stations would not even give the time of day, but we cared enough to play their music. I do not need to make a list, but due to the fact that KSHE started playing different groups, other stations around the country would see what we were doing, and began to play what we aired.
Michael: Thank you Steve for taking the time to be our guest in our exclusive promotional feature, St. Louis' Rock n Roll Connection! To email Steve Rosen, email: steve5350@aol.com.

Business Happenings Missouri STEM Week March 8-14, 2014 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math The Annual STEM Recognition Breakfast to honor 16 St. Charles County high school students excelling in science, technology, engineering and math will be held 7:30 a.m. Friday, March 13 at Old Hickory Golf Club, #1 Dye Club Road, St. Peters, Mo. The eventSchnucks is hosted by the Partners Opens at University Commons for Progress of Greater St. Charles, a civic group founded in 2001 to influence community progress so people, businesses and institutions flourish. STEM is a national and regional effort to better prepare the workforce of tomorrow by encouraging students to engage in studies, events, and careers involving science, technology, engineering and math.
Each year, every public and private high school in St. Charles County nominates a top junior or senior for this annual award based on the student’s STEM achievements, college and career plans. “STEM is the key that unlocks the door for today’s students to pursue the high-demand, well-paying jobs of tomorrow,” said PfP President Greg Prestemon. “Each year as we honor the top students in the area, it’s incredibly encouraging to think of the impact they will have on the future.” Prestemon also thanked local educators and business leaders for working closely with PfP over the last decade to expand STEM in local school curriculums
in St. Charles County
and summer camps, creating robotics teams, and spotlighting STEM career opportunities. Admission to the March 13 recognition breakfast is free, seating is limited, and registration is available at 636.441.6880.

W
ho can resist a dish of pasta in Italy, falafel in Turkey, hummus dip in Lebanon, or a fresh salad and Gyro in Greece? Cold or hot, sweet and savory, good food is everyone's temptation. Wherever John travels, he always stops at every sandwich stand or
dessert stall to try different foods and trade recipes that tempt the crowd and satisfy the soul. Now you can join the adventure at The Brick Oven and try food from around the Mediterranean, where eating on the street is a way of life. Try our fresh ingredients to the perfect Shawerma sold on the streets of Istanbul. From our mouth watering Brick Oven pizzas and homemade breads to our cool, always fresh salads and irresistible dips. Each dish can be enjoyed on its own, or two or three may
be combined to make a meal. You will enjoy the homemade meals from the distant lands without leaving the country. This is healthy eating at its most enjoyable.

STYGAR Family of Funeral Service
• Arrangements with clergy, cemetery and florist • Pre-need funeral planning • Grief counseling/support for up to a year • Veteran's benefits counseling
Our Foundation From humble beginnings in 1937, when John Joseph Stygar purchased Central Undertaking and Livery on Cass Avenue, the Stygar philosphy of service has grown strong. That first year, John J. performed about 40 funerals. It was a different time. Funerals were held at home. Communities were close-knit. Reputations were important. Losing a loved one is difficult for any family. We're honored that so many families have come to know and trust the Stygar family during their time of need. We will work diligently to preserve that trust now and into the future. And, we pledge to always do business in an honorable way that will make our children proud.
The Stygar family and our caring, professional staff is always available to serve you. Our services can be performed at either of our locations or at a church, a cemetery or any other location your family chooses.
To Meet Every Family's Needs and Wishes, We Offer: • • • • • • •
