he Chesterfield Police Department will be hosting its annual Safety Town program this summer. Safety Town is a nationally recognized pre-school safety program which teaches 4, 5 and 6 year olds about a wide variety of safety issues including bicycle safety, water safety, school bus safety and stranger danger. The program includes classroom activities as well as outside hands-on activities in the miniature Safety Town city. The program is hosted & staffed by the Chesterfield Police Department in cooperation with the Chesterfield Rotary, the Chesterfield Kiwanis and the Parkway School District. The program is conducted for six, two-week sessions during the summer months. In addition to commissioned police officers, the Safety Town staff includes teen counselors from area middle and senior high schools who assist the police officers in leading the program. All sessions will be held at Parkway Early Childhood Ctr., 14605 Clayton Road in Ballwin. The cost of the program is $10 per child. The children receive a Safety Town T-shirt, bicycle helmet and a Safety Town coloring book included in the cost. New GET ACTIVE Program Promotes Health and Wellness in Chesterfield The Chesterfield Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with St. Luke’s Hospital, is starting a new program called GET ACTIVE. Maryville Grows in National Stature, Retains Sense of Community

aryville University has been quietly building its reputation as a student-centered community with high-quality academics that has, for years, produced a steady stream of successful graduates — and a growing pool of esteemed alums. Now, thanks to a 2013 U.S. News & World Report survey that ranked Maryville the top “overperforming” college in the nation, the word is getting out. The ranking compares a university’s national rank — based on data such as admissions selectivity, financial and faculty resources, alumni giving, and graduation and retention rates — to its undergraduate academic reputation among peers. Maryville ranked 160 among national universities, but only 247 in peer assessment. This means it “overperformed” its undergraduate reputation ranking by 87 points, making it the No. 1 overperforming university in the country. Maryville University President Mark Lombardi said the distinction “illustrates that, if you look at the objective data, we’re an exceptional university.” “Our reputation is catching up,” he added. “But as everyone knows, usually reputation lags behind performance.” Lombardi is thrilled with the ranking, because it supports Maryville’s goal of building its national standing. “One of the visions of our strategic plan, which we initiated in 2007, was to make Maryville a nationally recognized

And the Saints have enjoyed success in the conference, with senior Matt Baker winning the NCAA Division II national wrestling championship and senior basketball standout Abby Duethman earning GLVC player of the year — both studentathletes also earned DII All-American Honors. In March, Maryville scored another first: it was the only university in the country to receive the NCAA Division II Presidents Award for Academic Success with a 100 percent, four-year graduation rate for its student athletes. “We’re moving up in athletics, but we’re doing it in the right way,” Lombardi said. When it comes to “firsts,” Maryville is on a roll. In January, the university

announced an academic partnership with Rawlings Sporting Goods to create the nation’s first corporate-named sport business management major. The Rawlings Sport Business Management Program provides opportunities for students to intern at Rawlings and with organizations such as the Cardinals, the Blues and the Rams. Lombardi described an excitement about Maryville’s academics, athletics and growing national reputation that is attracting students from around the globe. “We now have students from 47 states and 28 countries,” he said, adding that fall enrollment is tracking about 15 percent ahead of last year. Even with all the changes afloat at Maryville – including updated facilities, improved student services, outstanding athletics and an expanded offering of topflight academics – Lombardi said future students and alumni still recognize the one thing about Maryville that remains special. “The strength, support and and foundation of the community is still here,” Lombardi reflected. “And that’s a good thing.” By Carol Enright

City Fest Kicks off Chesterfield’s 25th Anniversary

hanks to community partners, the city of Chesterfield is planning a year of special events to celebrate the city’s 25th anniversary. Starting off with “City Fest” on June 1st, the events will be a joyful commemoration of Chesterfield’s people, businesses and history. Special logos spotlighting the occasion will be posted throughout the city all year; you can purchase a souvenir shirt at City Hall to promote your hometown’s anniversary. Along with special events all year long, Chesterfield will be offering special discounts and promotions at concession areas in the parks and will update their Facebook page and website for exciting, upcoming events for the entire family to enjoy. CITY FEST Kicking off the festivities, “City Fest” will be held June 1st at the Chesterfield Family Aquatic Center. The Center will open at 10 a.m. and will be FREE for all Chesterfield residents. From 10 a.m. to noon Midwest Pool Management will be providing water safety demonstrations and from noon - 2 p.m. join in the fun as a D.J. plays popular music at the Center.

The award-winning Chesterfield Parks and Recreation Department is active year-round to give its city a parks system to be proud of. Central Park 16365 Lydia Hill Drive Central Park, a 38-acre space that has the true feel of a warm, community park, is 38 acres of family activities. It is home to the Central Park Amphitheater, the Awakening Sculpture and the Family Aquatic Center, with its Leisure Pool, Competitive Pool, Lazy River, slides, Splash Playground and more. The Center is open every day; whether you want to dive in or sit out and tan, you can enjoy a day of fun here. The park has a playground with sliding, climbing and giggle-inducing features for both tiny tots and older kids. Bring your picnic and grab one of the tables, or just plop down on a bench inside the gazebo and enjoy the day. The pavilion is available for rental; consider having that summer family gettogether here.

Eberwein Park 1627-1657 Old Baxter Road Eberwein Park, an 18-acre parcel of land purchased by the City several years ago, is named after the Eberwein family who first settled in Chesterfield over 100 years ago. The history of the land and its meaning to Chesterfield are being preserved through the Parks Department’s attention

W.F. Dierberg Meditation Park 13701 Olive Boulevard The W.F. Dierberg Meditation Park on Olive Boulevard is a 2-acre park with a relaxing vibe that will help you recharge after a hectic day. It features walking paths, open green space to enjoy, park benches, a butterfly garden and a wonderful fountain. Bring your harried thoughts with you and leave them behind as you stroll through this green space; the sound of the waterfall, the sight of butterflies amid colorful flowers, and the feel of grass beneath your feet will re-energize your brain.

At Chesterfield Parks to detail and historic integrity. Eberwein is a quiet community park with a farmlike theme that will give your senses a glimpse of Chesterfield’s past. The restoration of the 100-year-old barn on the property has been completed recently, and will continue to stand in the park as a reminder of that history. A community garden project begun at Eberwein is a great success; additional plots will be available this year for gardeners to enjoy. In addition to a trail system, open play area and restrooms, Eberwein is home to a 2-acre dog park for residents and their canine family members. Chesterfield Athletic Complex 17925 North Outer 40 Road The Chesterfield Athletic Complex boast s a huge recreation area and is a wonderful asset to Chesterfield’s families. Its 176 acres of space features multiple attractions; 9 soccer fields, 5 football practice fields and 2 football game fields, 9 baseball practice fields and 18 baseball/softball fields along with 2 more multi-purpose fields. A special feature is the Catch 22 Miracle Field, the brainchild of Cardinal manager Mike Matheny. Concession buildings provide snacks for the masses and 3 parking lots provide ample space to unload gear and players. Two playgrounds give unstructured play options, and plenty of green space surrounds the area to provide a true town park experience.

Chesterfield’s Tour de Parks Chesterfield Parks and Recreation Citizen Advisory Committee presents Chesterfield’s annual Tour de Parks on May 11th. Stop by any of these parks between noon and 2pm to enjoy a variety of terrific family-friendly activities. • DIERBERG MEDITATION PARK: Try Yoga and Tai Chi moves here, led by the West County YMCA. Montgomery Bank will be providing flowers that you can help plant in the park. Sam’s Club will be providing soft drinks, and the Monarch Fire Department will have an information booth. • CENTRAL PARK: Enjoy an old-fashioned ice cream social at Central Park, have your family’s portrait drawn by a caricature artist and get a cool balloon from the balloon artist. • EBERWEIN PARK: The Bubble Bus will be at Eberwein; run through some giant bubbles! Some themes can play a major role in getting your guests to mingle. People, at times, seem to break off in mini groups at party's. A classic is boys with boys in a room and girls in another. Here are some "theme" ideas to get you started. Food and Wine Pairings: Set up different stations throughout your house. Each station has a perfectly matched wine and food pairing. It is rewarding to see a person experience a perfect food and wine match for the first time. Smoked salmon, cream cheese and a good Pinot Noir, crab dip with an Albarino and bacon wrapped figs with a Barbera are just a few examples of pairings. Don't forget chocolate and Imperial Stout. Mixology Party: Set up all ingredients to mix any number of drinks. Each guest or couple goes to their station with their items in front of them. These drinks can be simple or complicated so there is a challenge to your guests. Pisco sours, Chocolate martinis or a Caipirinha made with Cachaca are some fun drinks to start with. Brown Bag Party: Red wine is good in fall and winter. White wine is good in spring and summer. The hostess or guests bring their best choice under a designated dollar amount. All wines are voted on throughout the night. Guests also give their best guess as to the price of the wine. This is always interesting. Brown bag party's can come with a lot of imagination. All Chardonnay, all bubbly or all Cabernet brown bag parties are always fun. Make sure you strongly encourage your guests to drink plenty of water throughout the night. REMEMBER: No matter how organized your theme party is, it won't last. About two hours into your party it will appear that things are out of control. Don't worry. carecrow is one of Chesterfield’s newest restaurants and it has already created quite a buzz in the area. The restaurant is locally owned and operated by Chris Mertz and Shawn L-R. Scarecrow Owners, Chris Mulholland who have transformed Mertz and Shawn the previous Press Box Bar & Grill Mulholland. into an upscale, yet casual restaurant. They have created a nice ambience with dark, warm colors, more booths and high top tables, and the bar is now separated from the dining room with rich wood shutters which are open throughout the daytime hours for a nice friendly feeling, and closed at night creating an atmosphere that is quiet in the restaurant and fun in the bar ... just like it should be. They have also built a small wine room featuring international wines- 45 or so bottles, and they offer a rotating choice of wines by the glass. In addition to a nice selection of wine, Scarecrow also features top shelf single-malt scotches, bourbons and single-barrel and Irish whiskey. It is rare to find a bar in the area with such an extensive selection. They host special ‘liquor tastings’ every so often. The patio is large and inviting, adorned with colorful umbrellas and comfortable furniture. A separate dining area is adjacent to the patio which can be used for private parties of 35-40 people. Scarecrow has a diverse menu featuring creative American cuisine. Foods are made from scratch in-house, and the chef adds a spin on everyday food. There's a broad selection of appetizers, soups, lots of burger and sandwich choices, salads, wraps, vegetarian options, flatbreads, pizza and some amazing entrees. Appetizers include bacon wrapped, Irish ale-battered pickles with horseradish sauce, scotch eggs served with a Guinness or spicy creole sauce, rustic flatbreads including one topped with delicious short ribs, caramelized onions and fontina cheese, and a Thai chicken one as well. The pizza is St. Louis style and is very tasty. Salads include a unique grilled strip loin wedge- a sliced 6 oz strip on iceberg lettuce topped with crumbled blue cheese, egg, red onion with blue cheese dressing. Some sandwich options are an Irish club, shrimp po-boy and a classic French dip to name a few. Of course, the juicy burgers are always a favorite. They offer a bison burger choice as well The menu offers some outstanding dinner entrées.Try the Guinness pie- guinness braised beef, vegetables, hearty gravy and puff pastry cooked and served in an iron bowl. It is savory with tender fall-apart beef and an almost croissant like topping. Or the roasted Amish chicken with smoked bacon, Irish cheddar polenta and jalapeno corn succotash is also a house favorite. A New York strip steak, angel hair pasta with seafood, risotto, salmon and whitefish round out the menu. Happy Hour happens every Mon to Fri from 3-6 p.m. There are $5.50 apps on the menu as well as $4 house wines and well drinks, and $2 draft pints. Scarecrow is open for both lunch and dinner daily Hours are 11 a.m. to midnight Mon through Thurs, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Fri and Sat and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sun. Go there soon. You will become a regular if you try it once!
