Your Natural Approach to Labor

To the Residents of Chesterfield: Arts & Culture Community Events Kids & Teens Sports & Outdoors Health & Fitness Adults & Seniors Business, Etc.

The Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1976 to support and promote area businesses. As the City of Chesterfield has changed and grown, so has the Chamber of Commerce. Our mission to create a strong business environment remains, but our dedication to the Chesterfield community continues to grow. Our monthly events, including our First Thursday Coffee, General Membership Meeting, and Business after Hours, are always open to visitors and guests of our members. We encourage our active membership to invite colleagues and friends to join us, creating an ever-increasing circle of friends within the Chamber. The Chamber hosts several community events throughout the year. Our Holiday Gala, held the first Saturday in December at the Doubletree Hotel, is a lively night of dinner, dancing, raffles, auctions, and good camaraderie among our guests. We invite everyone in the community to join us for this festive night. Likewise, our Casino Night, Trivia Night, Gumbo Flats Pumpkin Run, and Annual Golf Tournament are enlivened by visitors from all around the region. We are extremely proud of our Summer Concert Series, entering its 27th season, which are held in Faust Park each Tuesday night throughout the summer. This signature event highlights our wonderful partnerships with are businesses, as they provide dining options, beverages, desserts, and most importantly, a host of local volunteers, helping out on behalf of their respective businesses. Our Chesterfield Young Professionals group is made up of businesses men and women, aged 21-45. Their networking opportunities are often presented in a social setting, as they learn to build committees, plan events, and take leadership roles within the Chamber. We encourage any young person living or working in Chesterfield to visit one of our many events, and see what this group has to offer. The Chamber has a number of members who are either retired, or simple residents who are interested in being more involved in the community. These members are offered a reduced membership fee, and are entitled to all the benefits of membership in the Chamber.

Thanksgiving... Watching Life Change

T

hanksgiving. That holiday stuffed between Halloween and the Christmas shopping countdown. In the last decade or so, its fanfare has faded to a tiny burp on the American consciousness. All week, I’ve seen and heard little about the significance of the day. Instead, the newspaper offers big turkey discounts (with minimum purchase), recipes to tickle the family palate, and rhetoric that thinly veils the “bum’s rush” Thanksgiving seems to get every year. Maybe it’s because we’re so well fed all year long. Most of us show evidence of our bountiful intake. The idea of a

feast is no more unique to our culture than a trip to Ponderosa’s buffet. Or maybe we’ve just gotten so used to the blessings of our daily lives- a warm home, family, health, security-that the idea of stopping to acknowledge them would make us feel they were somehow more than we deserve. I’m cooking my usual big turkey and my family is coming to spend the day. The menu is the same as every year-I’m not big on surprises. But I know it will be good, and I know I will love having everybody here. Making a meal for loved ones is a wonderful thing, but most of us have done it thousands of times before. What makes the Thanksgiving meal special is not the food. It’s the memory. We are all so busy now. Each week is already scheduled with appointments and work before I wake up on Monday mornings. My husband comes home tired from work in the evenings-my children are running with their children in a dozen different directions. 19

Thanksgiving is the one time everybody clears their calendars. For one day, time stops tossing us all against the deadlines of life. The ritual of celebrating Thanksgiving together gives us a chance to remember where we come from and who we are. Phone calls fly from Mother to Daughter. Daughter to Son. Son to Mother. Worlds of separate lives collide in an agreed upon plan of action. Dishes are delegated for preparation. Times are synchronized. On this one day, I will take time to see how my children have grown. My older daughter’s face will scrunch up in a scowl over something, and I’ll see again that little girl who used to hide her tender feelings by acting all tough. She didn’t fool me. Still doesn’t. My son will hug me, and I’ll feel the little boy inside this body that towers over me and holds me with gentle strength. His voice is deep, but my heart hears him as if he were still five years old and eager to please. The youngest of my children will turn 24 in a just a few days. Andrea won’t be here this year for Thanksgiving; she will be making her own turkey in her own apartment in Texas, saving her trip home for Christmastime. I will miss her, but she will be calling. And I will imagine her here. This holiday, more than any other, reminds me that nothing stays the same. And that it’s okay. The ritual of Thanksgiving gives me a chance to see the changes through warm moments and familiar words. I will look around my table and see the children and grandchildren God knew I’d have. And knew I’d need. Yesterdays and today and tomorrows. All right here, around one table, on one special day. Thanksgiving. By Robin Garrison Leach Out & About / Nov-Dec, 2013

A Priceless Gift For All Seasons Education for Students With Learning Challenges Pre K - 12th Grade

D

uring this season of giving and thanks, the Academy of St. Louis would like to share a most precious gift; the transformative effect the right school can have on both a student and a family of a child with special learning needs.

A Mom Reflects... The Academy has been a blessing for our daughter. We tried public school, Montessori, even homeschooling and nothing was a perfect fit. We wanted for Lily what our other two “typical” children had, a place where she could grow and develop at her own pace, in her own unique way. At the Academy, we have found that place. If I could tell other parents about the gifts the school has brought to our lives, here are some things that come to mind: 1. The gift of caring teachers and administrators that know each child - Lily can never “fall between the cracks” because there is always someone beside her to help her along 2. The gift of peace of mind knowing that Lily is safe while she is at school and that her academic, social and, if necessary, medical needs can be met 3. The gift of a more peaceful household because my daughter is happier and more confident 4. The gift of other mothers that truly understand what it is like to balance the needs of a child with unique needs and the rest of a family 5. The gift of knowing that Lily is accepted for who she is and is continuing to become the person she was meant to be, with all of her beautiful strengths and weaknesses Laura, Lily’s mother

Lily and her friend Reagan

A Letter to Santa... Dear Santa, I have had a great year at school! At first, I really wanted to go to a regular school with my twin sister. But now I am glad that I don't. At the Academy, 1. With my friends it’s okay to just be myself 2. I like the really small classes so my teachers can sit with me and help me with my work one on one 3. I am the secretary of the Junior Student Council 4. When I don't understand something, it's okay to ask a question and nobody thinks that I'm not smart 5. The music teacher is really fun! 6. I love going to serve food at the Mission of Charity, they’re always happy to see us 7. My teacher can tell when I am getting anxious about my work and she gives me a break to read or play a computer game 8. I can do after school clubs with my friends and teachers - I have even learned how to play chess 9. Whenever new people come for a tour, Mrs. O'Daniel gives me a hug; all of the teachers and administrators really care about us

Grandpa’s Thoughts... Grandpas want their grandchildren to have everything. They hope they climb the highest mountain, swim the widest lake, solve the hardest problem, befriend everyone and do the impossible. They pray that they enhance the lives of family, friends, and community. But, sometimes grandchildren have limitations that challenge them in achieving this perfect world life view of grandpas, like my Lily. The children, parents, and grandpas then struggle to overcome, with varying degrees of success. Sometimes, miracles occur that change everything and, from seemingly nowhere, there appears a school with leaders and teachers that understand the challenging world of grandchildren like mine. A school like this guides and prods each student to a greater self-understanding and esteem. They show the children that together they are alike in being different in a wonderfully likable way. They “fit in” to a world that accepts and admires them, and cherishes the talents they bring without reservation. They are valued as the beautiful individuals they are!! With this new sense of independence and self-sufficiency, smiles and laughter abound all around. Singing, performing, and learning become the norm! Their growth as human beings touches all who see it and lives are enhanced, just as grandpa had hoped. Thank you, the Academy of St Louis, for giving this miracle to my family. Lily Weeks’ Grandpa

Small Business Saturday Go Local Chesterfield Chesterfield Small Businesses Unite as One to Celebrate Small Business Saturday Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year. The holiday was conceived by American Express in 2010 and is a day to rally people nationwide to get out and Shop Small®. It is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retailers and e-commerce stores respectively. Small businesses are the heartbeat of our community. The Shop Small® movement encourages people to shop at and support local small businesses as a way to give back to the places that have given this community so much. This year Small Business Saturday will be Saturday, November 30. Please see the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce website at chesterfieldmochamber.com or the Go Local Chesterfield Facebook page at www.facebook.com/pages/Go-LocalChesterfield for information on participating small businesses and what promotions and special events they have planned for Chesterfield’s First Annual Small Business Saturday Celebration.

he sights and sounds of Christmas are great, but the aromas are what make the holidays memorable. Warm cookies, scented candles…and that Christmas tree! Nothing says Christmas like a real tree—chosen, hauled, placed and decorated by your family. With these tips, you can make this the year you go “natural” and bring home a tree from one of the tree farms in our area. Your kids will go bonkers, your house will smell terrific and you may stir up fond memories of your own childhood. Grab a camera, dress warmly, pile the kids in the car and visit a local tree farm this year for your Christmas tree.

Bring Home a REAL Christmas Tree this Year

Take your hike through the tree farm with a discerning eye. Look for a tree without dry twigs or lots of loose needles (a few are fine). If it has a sour or musty smell, pass it by.

2

Remember, your living room ceiling is not 20 feet high. You will need to add extra height for a tree topper ornament and tree stand.

3

Protect the top of your vehicle with a blanket or plastic. Bungee or rope the tree securely, then pull on the tree to make sure it’s tight. Remember to put the bottom of the tree aiming forward.

4

When home, cut off a bit of the bottom of the trunk, straight across. The tree farm may do this, too. This will give the tree a fresh place to soak up water.

Your tree will need LOTS of water…up to a gallon the first day and one or more quarts thereafter. Use cold water and don’t let it go dry. Use only UL approved lights, cords and devices on your tree. As long as your live tree is hydrated, stable and monitored, it is safe for your home. TREE FARMS & LOTS IN OUR AREA Many tree farms and lots offer more than just trees; they give your family a real country/holiday experience. Some have gift shops, visits with Santa, hot chocolate and rides through the woods. Call before you visit these tree farms and lots to make sure they’re open and ready for business. 31

DON’T STRESS OUT!

Keep the “HO-HO-HO” in Your Holidays 6

Y

BE A KID AGAIN. Just for a few minutes, see the holidays the way you did when you were little: when Rudolph’s shiny nose glowed (like a light bulb!), when whispered secrets were as delicious as the cookies fresh from the oven and when the magic of the season twinkled and giggled its way to your heart. November and December may be busy, but they don’t have to be a stress-fest. Breathe deeply, hum a carol and dive in with a plan to enjoy whatever comes.

our holidays are full of activity: Decorating. Cooking. Shopping. Wrapping. Traveling. Working to pay for it all. These add an extra load of busyness on top of what you already do each day to keep yourself and your family healthy and happy. And the frayed bow tying this load into one huge, ugly package? STRESS Stress is that voice telling you the special holiday candleholder your mother-in-law gave you last year HAS to be SOMEWHERE… Stress wakes you up in the middle of the night with the realization that the gift lists for your kids are uneven and you have to ADD OR TAKE AWAY… Stress growls in your stomach, demanding 300-calorie cookies, Cool Whip right out of the tub…and even a few lumps of dry, heavy fruitcake. You know stress is with you from now till January. But you don’t have to let it zap the joy of the most wonderful time of the year. Try these few tips to keep the Grinch away and provide a healthy balance to the unavoidable challenges you’ll be facing.

STRESS BUSTERS Here are a few places to go to work off that stress. Massage Envy 1694 Clarkson Road, Chesterfield 636-532-7733 www.massageenvy.com With four different massage types to choose from and therapists with hands of gentle steel, Massage Envy can guarantee you will leave with legs of jelly and a serene, stress-free smile. Valley Vinyasa Yoga Studio 130 Chesterfield Towne Center,Chesterfield 314-753-3661 www.valleyvinyasa.com Try something new to give yourself the gift of flexibility, calm, and physical wellbeing. Yoga is a mind and body meld of stretching and meditation that can drive away every anxiety of holiday madness. Workshops are available for beginners.

1

SAY NO. It’s really okay to say “NO” once in a while. You can’t be all things to all people…they’ll still like you in January if you refuse their invitation to the “Party of the Year” at Joe what’s his name’s house. DON’T HURRY. Mall traffic will not move faster, no matter what words you throw into the air in your car. It’s going to be slow, there are going to be inconsiderate people and the speed of highway traffic will slow in direct proportion to your urgency. Just pop in a book on CD or crank up the holiday music and get in line.

4

2

DO SOMETHING NICE FOR A STRANGER. Buy a Starbucks for the person behind you. Give your spot in line to the lady with the frazzled toddler and the wild eyes. Donate to a charity or animal shelter and get the family involved.

EXERCISE. Yikes. Sounds crazy, huh? You’d think just wrestling snow boots on the kids or maneuvering a cart through mazes of wandering shoppers would be enough. But getting the heart rate up with planned exercise is much healthier for your body than the bursts of stress-filled speed you expend this time of year. DO SOMETHING JUST FOR YOU. Drop in on a yoga class or get a massage to reset your body and mind. It’s not selfish. It’s essential, and may keep you sane while those about you are losing ground. 36

he first official Mayor’s Dinner took place in September at the residence of former Mayor Charles Fawcett. Five of the eight former Mayors of Chesterfield, plus the City Administrator, were in attendance along with their spouses. The group enjoyed reminicing about their days in office and how the fabric of Chesterfield was created. Mayor Bob Nation signing the commemorative Chesterfield Anniversary Book at the Mayor’s Dinner

Chesterfield is celebrating 25 years of being a city in 2013. It was incorporated in June of 1988. The city hosted various events throughout the year commemorating this special event. It was fitting that the first ever Mayor’s Dinner also took place this year. We salute these mayors for helping build the City of Chesterfield into the vibrant, thriving metropolis it is today. It now boasts a population of almost 48,000 people and has become a major residential, business, retail and transportation center on the western edge of St. Louis County. It is one of the fastest growing cities in Missouri. Chesterfield- A great place to live, work and play!

BACK COVER • Compassionate Nursing Services

I

n some ways, we are in the golden age of medicine. There are new technologies and new ways to manage diseases and disabilities, many of which were unheard of in our parents’ generation. But for all the technological advances of modern medicine, the practice of caring for the sick and the elderly is still in its infancy. Yes, diseases that killed quickly now can be managed, and people can still lead meaningful lives. But they can only do so when the right sort of care is given. Compassionate care. Sure, many families attempt to provide compassionate care to loved ones on their own. But this can add undue stress on caregivers and loved ones alike. The end result is not more compassionate care, but a growing rift in the family itself.

This is why I started Compassionate Nursing. After 13 years of working in the industry, I saw the need not only to clinically manage care, but to provide compassionate care for the entire family. Whereas most care has a narrow focus on outcomes, we focus on the emotional needs of the family. So our integrated approach includes not only competent nursing services, but also information, resources, and most importantly, a sympathetic partner to help families transition into a difficult stage of life. One of our client’s sons said it best: "One of the things [my mother] wanted most was to be taken care of, to feel loved and cared for, to be on the receiving end for once.” And we hear this kind of thing over and over again from families. But if we do our job right, it feels like you’ve extended your family. That same son told me: “You and the nurses from Compassionate Nursing Services made my

mother feel like the center of attention during the last days of her life. Everyone was so personal, it felt like you and your staff was a part of our family. But the speed of your response and the quality of your personnel gave the impression that you have an army of caregivers at your disposal." This story is not unique. Many clients have testified to the importance of compassionate care and the peace of mind it brings. It’s not a medical miracle. But the feeling, when it happens, can be miraculous. By Matt Skaggs

RESTAURANT SPOTLIGHT

Serving Great Italian Food For 30+ Years

Vito’s in the Valley By Pat Catanzaro, Publisher

L

ook who now made their home in the Valley! Vito’s Pizzeria and Sicilian Ristorante from Lindell Avenue has recently opened another location right here in our back yard. Opened in October, the Chesterfield community welcomed Vito’s with open arms and the restaurant is fast becoming THE new place to be in West County. Vito’s offers a comfortable, chic atmosphere where friends and family may gather to enjoy the ‘Vito’s’ experience! The food here is to die for- Scumptious pizzas are a featured item. The pizza, both hand-tossed and Sicilian-style deep dish, has won numerous awards in the St. Louis area. The original hand-tosssed features white crust topped with real mozzarella cheese, parmigiano and oregano. The deep dish Sicilian is baked in olive oil and topped with a special Sicilian sauce with mozzarella, parmigiano cheese and oregano.Try the Quattro Stagioni (four seasons) -a taste of four unique flavors on one pizza. 1/4 portobello mushroom, 1/4 shrimp, 1/4 prosciutto, 1/4 artichoke with Sicilian green olives, capers and roasted red pepper. The menu also includes a nice selection of entrees including fish, steaks, chicken and some brilliant pastas. A tasty chicken speidini is a house favorite and the eggplant appetizer is one of the best eggplant dishes around town. Pastas include the linguine Tutto Mare and the Farfalle al Salmone and, of course, the traditional spaghetti and meatballs. A variety of house salads is another special touch and there is a plentiful choice of appetizers. The lunch menu includes paninis and some other delicious soups, sandwiches, salads and pastas. Vito’s is owned and operated by Giovanni LaFata and his wife Jessica. The much experienced chef Gianfranco Munna adds his flair to the original family recipes, and manager Scott Morrison assures that the staff, service and food are at their best. In addition to owner Gio, there are usually some other family members from the downtown restaurant on hand. They include mother Caterina Maltese who takes pride in her son’s success in this new venture. It’s always nice to see the owners around and having fun- It’s like a big Italian family affair! You may dine in the lively bar area with high top tables and white linens or choose to enjoy a more relaxing atmosphere in the beautiful dining area. When weather permits, there are two patios to enjoy dining alfresco. Although the tastes are very similar there are distinct differences between Sicilian food and Italian food. And if you like Italian food you will LOVE Sicilian! To my knowledge this is the only Sicilian dining facility in Chesterfield which sets it apart from the more than 180 restaurants in town. Vito’s in the Valley is open daily for lunch and dinner. They also offer carry-out and provide delivery service to homes and businesses within the area. Fullservice catering is available for off site parties. Vito’s is sure to win your vote for some of the best Italian/Sicilian food in all of St. Louis. Visit soon for a new taste of the town!
