SHOPPING

“To Shop Online or Offline? doors to open. The smaller stores tend not to do anything special for Black Friday. There is a small surge of shopping in Historic St. Charles, but not much. The area sustains itself on its charm and the city advertises for the businesses there. Shoppers keep coming back because they hear about places such as Designer Like from word of mouth. (Designer Like sells accessories that are made to look like they are designer brand names.) Some enjoy shopping in stores because they can make an entire experience out of it; spending the day with friends and family. Shopping online may be convenient, but can definitely not replace shopping in a physical store for all things. For example, one can avoid annoyances

Consumers are growing increasingly comfortable with both internet and mobile technologies and online retailers are beginning to look more convenient...

E

ach year, the day after Thanksgiving is infamously known as Black Friday. Black Friday is known as the official start of the holiday season. Shoppers are known to rise at the crack of dawn – or earlier – and pack the stores, chasing down sales and “hot” items. Black Friday even turns violent on occasion, when desperate customers just cannot wait to get their hands on something- Classic example; the Tickle Me Elmo doll from the 1990’s. These days, more and more people seem to be using the internet to do their shopping. In 2011, it was estimated that retail store’s sales online would grow about 16%, according to “Black Friday – Online Vs. Offline Stories.” Noticing that online sales were up, stores such as Target and Walmart began their Black Friday sales as soon as Thanksgiving; only to be one-upped by the internet again when companies such as Amazon began sales as early as the Monday before Thanksgiving. “Consumers are growing increasingly comfortable with both internet and mobile technologies and online retailers are beginning to look more convenient,” says “Black Friday – Online Vs. Offline

Stories.” Because of society’s comfort with cell phones and tablets, several companies use the Gift Groupe, which, operating on several websites, sends out daily offers at noon plus special offers at 6:00 a.m. for those in line on Black Friday. Besides the shopping going faster, many prefer shopping online on Black Friday to save on specials on shipping costs, to save on gas and transportation hassles, to avoid the loud crowds, and to avoid getting up early. So why do people still drag themselves out of bed to go shopping on Black Friday? Mostly, they like the tradition and challenge that the day brings (not to mention the boost in the economy). Shopping offline is easier if you are not sure what you are looking for, since one cannot exactly surf the entire internet looking for just the right thing. While searching in stores, one might come across something that they didn’t even realize that they needed or wanted. Target, Walmart, Toys R’ Us, and other large chain stores get more customers on Black Friday than smaller, local stores. For instance, in 2011, Target’s and Best Buy’s sales increased 10% to 14%. These are the kind of stores with the gigantic sales and lines weaving out the door, waiting for the 30

such as clothes that don’t fit by trying them on in a store instead of trusting that the size that was ordered will fit. Shopping inside of physical stores will probably never become completely obsolete. By Amanda Gertner

Holiday HAPPENINGS

T

he holiday season is a busy time of year for most everyone. From working, to shopping, to students taking their midterms, it can be difficult – if not nearly impossible – to squeeze into our lives some quality Christmas (or Chanukah) cheer. Amidst all of the hustle and bustle during November and December, it is important to remember what we are celebrating and cherish the joy of the season with family and friends. Try some of the activities below to put the sparkle back in your holiday: Several holiday events are included in the Saint Charles Christmas Traditions. These begin with the Opening Ceremony on November 23 at 11:00 a.m. at Kister Park Gazebo on the 400 block of S. Main Street. During the ceremony, Santa will arrive in a carriage flanked by the Lewis & Clark Fife & Drum Corps. along with The Legends of Christmas (19th century Christmas characters). “Festivities continue with caroling, vendors, and Santas from around the world,” according to the pamphlet “Christmas Traditions.” The Opening Ceremony will be followed by the Official Saint Charles City Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on November 23 at 5:00 p.m. Joining guests around the twinkling tree will be several popular Christmas Traditions characters. Some events of the Saint Charles Christmas Traditions follow:

“A Clueless Christmas” A Comical Interactive Christmas Mystery is a dinner/lunch theatre based on the classic board game Clue. It will be your job, once there, to try and figure out who the murderer is. Whoever solves the mystery will receive a Christmas present as a prize. This shows on December 2, 9, 16, and 23 at 6:00 p.m. for the dinner show and on December 2 at 10:30 a.m. for the lunch show. This dinner/lunch theatre is at the Grand Opera House Banquet and Event Center on 311 N. Main Street. Tickets are $50 per person. To purchase tickets, call (636) 255-6155 or visit the Visitors Center. We all know the classic Christmas-time story with Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and the three ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. For many, the holiday season is not complete until the story of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol has been told. This year, Lindenwood’s production of “A Christmas Carol” will be performed on November 29, 30, and December 1 at 7:30 p.m. and December 2 at 2:00 p.m. in J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts on 2300 West Clay. For tickets, visit www.lindenwoodcenter.com.

Enjoy some good food and holiday music at the same time! The Sleigh Bell Singers will bring the musical stylings of the 1930’s and 1940’s on Fridays during Saint Charles Christmas Traditions at various restaurants on N. Main Street. Erin Bode and David Halen Holiday Concert is another holiday concert which features Erin Bode accompanied by her trio and the Saint Louis Symphony Concertmaster, David Halen. Erin has been one of the best musicians on the local scene for several years. These sounds of the season can be heard on December 14 at 8:00 p.m. at the Foundry Art Centre on 520 N. Main Center.

Miscellaneous If you or someone that you know has a love of trains, the Christmas Trains and Treasures is the place for you. This display will be open from November 23 – December 24, Wednesday – Friday 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $2 for adults and $1 for children under the age of thirteen. There are several festive events during Saint Charles Christmas Traditions, but the rest of the area has much to offer as

long, is co-produced with Chesterfield Arts. It will be held in the Purser Center on Logan College’s campus, “The Nutcracker” sells out quickly, so grab tickets while you can. Tickets for adults are $15 and $10 for children. Call (636) 5191955 for tickets. Tickets are $52.50 to $37.50. The Rockettes return to their native city of St. Louis with A Radio City Christmas. Performances are November 8 through 17 at the Peabody Opera House. Dates are Friday, December 14 and Saturday, December 15. Tickets are $8 to $5.

Other Holiday Happenings Not all holiday events are Christmas related, of course. The Missouri Botanical Garden will be hosting Chanukah: Festival of Lights on December 9, 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. This celebration of the Jewish holiday, Chanukah, includes Israeli music, dancing, and a menorah-lighting ceremony. There will also be Chanukah merchandise provided by the Garden Gate Shop and other vendors. Admission to this festival is included in the admission to the garden. One of the few other Jewish – oriented events during the holiday season will be the showing of the play “Talley’s Folly,” by Lanford Wilson, at The New Jewish Theatre (sponsored by the JCC). Set in 1944, this is a love story about an affluent woman from Missouri and an immigrant Jew in St. Louis who fall in love. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and New York Drama Circle Award for Best Play, The holidays can be a magical time if you let them. It can be hard to enjoy, sometimes, with all of the normal responsibilities of life and a sleigh-full of cooking, shopping, decorating, and - let’s face it smiling and being cheery more than usual. Allowing yourself (and your family and friends) some time to enjoy some of these events may help to bring back the pure joy and merriment of the season. By: Amanda Gertner

Some of these tips are for next year. Do what you can this year and start planning for next year.

1

2

Wrap gifts as you buy them Buy wrapping paper, ribbon and tags on sale after Christmas so you will have it handy.

3

Trim a smaller tree. Do not decorate every nook and cranny in your house. A few well placed decorations is enough.

4

Buy your holiday cards early this year, and after Christmas for next year when they are 50% off. Address, stamp and sign a few cards every evening.

5

Take time to relax. I love to turn on the tree lights, listen to Christmas carols, and relax with a glass of wine or a cup of cocoa. Aaah.

Stay well. Boost your immune system with vitamins and minerals to help you stay healthy. Stop by O’Fallon Nutrition for information on immune boosters. Reduce your sugar intake. Increased consumption of desserts and sweets during the holidays makes you sluggish and tired. When you are tired you get behind schedule, and stress out, and the vicious circle begins.

8

Delegate. Make a list of your holiday tasks. Choose those you enjoy to do yourself and delegate the rest (or hire someone to do them). You may be surprised that no one notices what you left out!

9

Simplify your entertaining. Go out for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. If you eat in, order some things, such as the salads, vegetables and desserts. Host a pot luck dinner or party instead of doing it all yourself. Hire someone to clean or decorate.

10

At the end of each day review what you have accomplished and be satisfied. Don’t feel bad about what you did not get done. Remember “Some days you are the pigeon and some days the statue!” ~ Dilbert

Shop for holiday gifts all year. If you shop in December, shop in small local stores instead of malls or superstores for unique gifts, easier parking and smaller crowds.

O

nce upon a time, libraries were pretty dull destinations for some people. If you weren’t a bookworm (like me), you visited the library to get books for school assignments or for research on a topic of special interest. My local library was housed inside the City Hall of my town. When I stepped inside the building, the smell of the books mingled with the odor of the freshlymopped hallway floor leading there. I still remember my librarian, Mrs. McMullen. She was probably in her 40’s, but looked ancient to my 11-year-old eyes. She wore glasses (of course) and met me with a smile that both welcomed me and warned me to be quiet and to “respect the collection.” The walls were bare, except for a few watercolor paintings from local artists. There was no sound unless Mrs. McMullen was stamping due dates inside books or someone was thumbing through the card catalog. That was a long time ago. I haven’t aged (!), but libraries have changed so dramatically in the last 40 years that you wouldn’t recognize the place.

Check Out What You’ve Been Missing If your last visit to the library was more than a few years ago, you are missing out on one of the best resources in your neighborhood for music, movies, books and special events for everyone in your family. Libraries are on the cutting edge of technology and customer service. Imagine a place you could visit where: • Computers are available to use (FREE) • New-release DVDs are waiting to be

You can surf to your heart’s content, or study in the secluded nooks throughout the building. And when you go home, you can take the library with you. Your library district has an online catalog that rivals Amazon’s, with search options to help you find everything you’re looking for. Visit their homepage and reserve, renew and request books or media. Download audio books or EBooks and take them wherever you go. Tasty Tidbits from Eateries in and Around Chesterfield Comparing Wine Types

Recipe: Chicken Carciofi Supplied by Viviano’s Festa Italiano 150 Four Season Plaza 31-878-1474 INGREDIENTS • 4-6 Chicken Breasts Sauce: • Juice from 1 lemon • 1 cup chicken broth • 1 cup white wine (Chablis or Chardonney) • 6 tablespoons butter • 1- 14 oz can of artichoke hearts, drained, and cut into eights • 2 teaspoons granulated garlic For Flour Mixture: • 2 cups flour • 1 tablespoon salt • 2 teaspoons white pepper • 2 tablespoons granulated garlic DIRECTIONS: Pound Chicken Breasts between 2 sheets of waxed paper until thin. Dredge chicken breasts in flour mixture and shake off the excess. Heat 4 tablespoons of olive oil and 4 tablespoons butter in a heavy skillet. Brown chicken breasts but be careful not to overcook them. As they are browned transfer them to the serving dishes and keep warm. To the skillet

add the lemon juice, chicken broth, white wine, and granulated garlic, and scrape up the browned bits on the bottom of the pan-approximately 3 mins. Add the Artichokes and simmer the sauce for about 10 mins. If you need to thicken the sauce mix 1 tablespoons cornstarch with ? cup water. Add slowly to sauce and stir until thick. Remove pan from heat and add 2 tablespoons of the butter. Swirl to combine. Adjust seasoning to taste. You may need to add more lemon juice, chicken broth, or wine. Arrange chicken breast in the pan and pour the sauce over them all. Artfully arrange the artichoke pieces over and around the chicken breasts.

Let's talk simple, straight forward and useful wine facts. There are a lot of boring details I am going to leave out. Here are some simple tidbits you might want to know: • Sa u v i g n o n B l a n c v s . F u m e B lanc: These are the same grape. Sauvignon has citrus and grapefruit characteristics. Usually medium to high in acidity. Fume has the same characteristics except it's aged in oak barrels. This gives the wine a tint of wood. • Pinot Grigio vs. Pinot Gris: These are also the same grape. A lot of wine people refer to Pinot Grigio as Italian in origin. Pinot Gris origin is every other place except Italy. • Chablis is a French Chardonnay. • Red Burgundy is a French Pinot Noir. • Shiraz vs. Syrah: This is also the same grape. Shiraz is referred to the wine whose origin is Australia. Syrah is from every other country. Australian style of Shiraz is very fruit forward. Syrah, in general, is very earthy and dryer than Shiraz. The way the wine is made brings out the different flavor profiles. • Syrah vs. Petite Sirah: Two completely different grapes that produce different wines. Petite Sirah is so dark it's almost black. There is also a slight smell of concord grapes. Petite Sirah is much bigger than Syrah. It is the classic "teeth stainer." • The word "Meritage" is a name from California. It refers to an American Bordeaux blend. The roots of this word is California by nature, not French. When pronouncing this word, remember it rhymes with heritage. I know guys, this seems like some worthless information. Some of you might find this interesting. Personally I'm tired of people pronouncing Meritage as if they just left the French Riviera. Food & Drink Suggestions for your Holiday Party Q: I never know how much food and drinks to plan on for my party! A: The simplest equation that answers how to calculate food is the “One-Pounder” rule. This rule says to have about 1 pound of food for each guestnot counting dessert or drinks! Apps only party- Most adults nibble 6-7 apps per hour apps per hour. Count on 15-20 pieces of food per guest per

44

hour. If serving dinner plan on 3-4 per hour during the first two hours. Drinks- In general most adults have 1-2 drinks per hour or 34 drinks during a 3 hour dinner party. Wine & Champage- 1 bottle per 2 guests for dinner. Ice- 1 lb. per person if drinks require ice. Non alcoholic drinks- About one gallon for every 12 guests

alaban’s wine cellar & tapas bar expands this month almost doubling their square footage with new private room space and making the most of their 2012 wine and food awards. In mid-November, Balaban’s opens three unique private rooms. Balaban’s baskets, each individually created, make The Wine Room lined personal gifts at all prices--orders online or in house floor to ceiling with with shipping locally and nationwide. A gift card tucked in a corner, a series of wine classes hidden Balaban’s Library under a favorite bottle, a pair of wine dinners in Wines, those from the Balaban’s new private rooms nestled amidst wines, original award-winning olive oils, salts, and gourmet foods--the reality and fun of Balaban’s baskets means each one can be tweaked Café Balaban® cellar, with just the right touch. Relish Balaban’s food and will accommodate up wine and share the holiday experience. to six. “Subtly lit and intimate, we see this as the place to propose, celebrate an anniversary or impress your most important client,” Steve McIntyre, co-owner with Brian Underwood, said. Two larger rooms with state of the art audio visual equipment will take up to 80 seated, 100 for cocktails, if put together, or two groups of 40 each simultaneously. McIntyre expects to accommodate corporate and private events including business and association conferences and meetings, wedding rehearsal dinners and receptions as well as an expanded program of Balaban’s wine dinners, classes and special tastings in the larger spaces. For November and December the wine program features a Dominus Wine Dinner at 6:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 4, and a Pine Ridge Wine Dinner at the same time on Sunday, Dec. 16. “Balaban’s historically and today gives customers a good time at a good price. The new space allows us to build on that and still serve our wine store and café clients.” McIntyre said. In August Balaban’s captured a coveted best award of excellence from Wine Spectator in the magazine’s 2012 awards to restaurants for their wine cellars and pairing of food and wine. Other Balaban’s accolades list a designation as a 2012 best restaurant from St. Louis Magazine and 2012 first place from Out & About as an eclectic upscale Chesterfield restaurant. Opened in late 2009 in Chesterfield’s Dierbergs Marketplace, Balaban’s stars as St. Louis’ only restaurant and retail wine store where customers pay the same wine retail price dining in house or taking wines home. Expansion of the Balaban’s kitchen as well as extension of their catering and deli operations, additional bathrooms and integration of the original wine bar with the new space complete the renovation plans.
