Enjoy Eagle Watching
t age 18, I saw a poster of a majestic looking eagle, wings spread, a mountain range behind and a bottom caption ... “All Americans are born free but many sell their liberty cheap. For those who don’t, the Eagle is their symbol.” Eagle watchers are best served by cruising 14 areas along the Mississippi and Illinois rivers from the Chain of Rocks bridge to a point a little north of Louisiana, Missouri. You’ll want to wear layered clothing accented with binoculars.
Plan your viewing time to accommodate the eagles feeding schedules, usually between the hours of sunrise and 11 AM. Be sure to look for what veteran eagle watchers call “baseballs in the trees” (due to the eagles white head),

Bring an extra dose of patience. Eagles move about in their own time. Also, new eagle watchers should be aware of the Eagle Protection Act in combination with the Criminal Fines Improvement Act of 1987 prohibiting possession of anything eagle, from a dead body to a mere feather. Instead, just listen for the shrill, high pitched, twittering cry eagles make and be happy with viewing or picture taking. Photo enthusiasts are encouraged to use a tripod, telephoto lens and a film rating of 400 ASA, or the equivalent with a digital camera. Eagles can also be viewed 363 days a year, 8 to 5 at the World Bird Sanctuary in Valley Park, Missouri as well as the Alton Visitor’s Center in Alton, Illinois. By Joe Palermo

The Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce enjoyed a wonderful 2013, and we are very excited about our programs and events scheduled for 2014. We hope you, as residents of Chesterfield, feel welcome to participate in our many activities. Our monthly events, including our First Thursday Coffee, General Membership Meeting, and Business after Hours, are always open to visitors and guests of our members. We encourage our active membership and residents to attend these events, creating an ever-increasing circle of friends within the Chamber. The Chamber ended the year on a high note, with a very successful Holiday Gala. Special thanks to our volunteers and our members for their support through planning, sponsorships, and donations. We invite everyone in the community to join us next year for this festive night. As we move into the new year, we are pleased to share that we have launched a Women’s Initiative called “CCW”, or Connecting Chesterfield Women. The CCW will host their second event called “Mixology 103” at Scarecrow Restaurant, on January 8. Details can be found on our website (www.chesterfieldmochamber.com). On February 26, St. Luke’s Hospital will host a luncheon during which experts will discuss issues regarding sleep, exercise, and diet. Another exciting new program is our Economic Development Forum on January 28. This all-day event will take place the West County Family YMCA, and will feature guest speakers from regional businesses. Lunch will be provided. Please see our website for registration or details about the event. Our Chesterfield Young Professionals group will be hosting their 2nd Annual “Casino Night” on Friday, February 7, at Jim Butler KIA. This will be a fun evening of games and prizes, with live entertainment and food from a variety of restaurants. Tickets are available online or by calling 636-532-3399. One more piece of exciting news…our Business EXPO, which will be held on March 6, has moved to Chesterfield Mall. This event is free and open to the public, and we will look forward to seeing you all there.

RESOLVE to Be FIT in 2014! Turning Small Changes into Good Habits By Robin Garrison Leach
T
he New Year inspires us all to make big plans for better fitness. Most New Year’s resolutions focus on weight loss and health-related improvements, yet on average only 20% of us are able to make good on our promises to ourselves. Maybe we try to change too much in our routines too quickly, or maybe we just expect too much. But whatever the reasons, we all know how difficult it is to maintain a fitness strategy beyond the first month or two of our yearly resolutions. This year, consider making just a few simple changes in your normal routine. Little changes add up to noticeable improvements in both your attitude about fitness and the way you feel about your body. Whether you want to lose a few pounds or just develop better health habits, here are some tips that may help. Many you’ve heard before, but if you incorporate only two or three into your routine you will be making a positive change.

TAKE THE STAIRS I take the elevator even when it’s just a floor or two, and I’m not alone. Only about 6% of people use the stairs in public buildings. It’s a habit I’m going to break this year. Look for the stairway and make a conscious effort to use it whenever you can.

Lose the TV! According to a study published by the Annals of Behavioral Medicine, people who lost at least 10% of their body weight and kept it off for five years or more had fewer TV’s in their homes than overweight people. (Maybe we could just move our TV’s around every day for exercise?)

Vacuuming burns 105 calories in a half-hour. Dusting burns 75 and shoveling snow uses 105. Remote control clicking? None. Put on some music and embarrass your kids by moving and grooving as you do your housework. Walk 300 Steps a Day I wouldn’t recommend counting aloud; you can get a pedometer. Park far away from store entrances and you’ll also eliminate the stress of losing your car in the lot. It’ll be the one waaayyy out there. Take walks –even short ones –and know you’re doing something good for yourself.

Keep Moving at Work If you have a desk job, you don’t have to stay idle. Move your legs back and forth while you’re sitting or tap your toes. Make it a habit to stretch often; get up and move around when you can. Consider a short walk around the parking lot or building during lunch.

Always Stay Cool! Being a bit chilly can help burn calories. And being too warm leads to naps. Go outside and move around in the cooler air. Stay active regardless of the temperature.

Give Yourself a Break If you’re like me, you’re tempted to give up when you falter in your plans to be healthier. That large order of Wendy’s fries, while delicious, won’t help you get back on track. Know that you’ll stray from your resolutions, and wake up each day ready to try again. Habits take time to develop, and nobody’s perfect. 2014 can be the year you make some small changes toward a better, healthier lifestyle. Make your resolutions ones you can truly keep, and keep working toward your goals. 28

ny mother can understand the desperation of seeing their child in pain. Some can feel the sorrow of not being able to provide adequate care for him; financial constraints, transportation limitations. Even the emotional paralysis of not knowing where to turn. Then, a letter, email or phone call reaches Wings of Hope. This non-sectarian, non-racial, non-political organization based in Chesterfield soars into action. Research is done, a plan is developed and a way to help is implemented. Wings of Hope finds help in the family’s area, gets them there, and provides all the necessary logistics and resources to get them assistance they could never have attained on their own. A woman needs life-saving surgery for a rare disease—the only hospital that can help is across the country. Wings of Hope arranges for the trip and medical care, provides hotel, food, transportation…and even sends along a Certified Airborne Nurse to accompany and stay with her through the process. Wings of Hope is an all-volunteer charity with 157 bases in 47 countries (2012) and a task force of over 3,000 people spread around the world; more than 600 at the headquarters alone. Through worldwide efforts as well as their local Medical Relief and Air Transport (MAT) Program, this Nobel-Peace-Prize-nominated charity works to afford changes in the world that will bring peace and hope to those who need it most. MAT is the only free Air Ambulance in the world that operates 24/7. Begun in 1962 by four St. Louis business executives, Wings of Hope has completed thousands of small and huge missions to stabilize impoverished countries, improve the quality of life for children and families in crisis and help build humanitarian bridges—through practical, common-sense steps that will eventually give the recipients a way to help themselves. They do not accept any government money; 90%-100% of the private donations they receive go directly to alleviate immediate suffering wherever it is needed. Little more than a dozen board members and President Doug Clements keep things humming at Wings: making calls, finding solutions, using creative thought to solve often complex problems through patience and a sense of moral grace. Projects Wings of Hope are tackling are as varied as the world’s needs dictate: • A tribe in the Amazon needs baby chickens and garden seed to help sustain life to its families. • Women in India are trained to run small businesses and gain health support to help them become more self-reliant. • Children throughout the Midwestern USA who suffer major birth defects and have no resources for transportation or medical care are provided for through the Medial Air Transport at Wings of Hope. So, no matter how complex the problem, no matter what the need is – they do their absolute best to solve the situation. 31

• Sauvignon Blanc vs. Fume Blanc: These are the same grape. Sauvignon has citrus and grapefruit characteristics. Usually medium to high in acidity. Fume has the same characteristics except it's aged in oak barrels. This gives the wine a tint of wood. • Pinot Grigio vs. Pinot Gris: These are the same grape. Directions • Wash thawed shrimp and coat with the flour and seasoning mixture. • Deep fry shrimp until golden brown. You can do this on the stove top with about an inch of oil in a skillet.
• While cooking, cut bread and lightly coat with butter on inside of bread.
