On average, each year 16 billion jelly beans and 90 million chocolate bunnies are made in preparation of Easter. Statistics show that 76% of people eat the ears of the chocolate bunny first. Each year, the White House hosts an Easter Egg Roll on the front lawn. The tradition was started by President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1878.

Easter and Passover P

In celebration of spring, here are some fun facts, customs and traditions surrounding Easter and Passover...

F

or Christians, Easter commemorates the resurrection of Christ and his promise of eternal spiritual life. Many different customs have grown around this holiday in the United States and their origins lie in both pre-Christian religions and Christianity. In ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Persia, eggs were dyed for spring festivals, starting the tradition of giving colored eggs at Easter time. • Christians consider eggs to be "the seed of life" and symbolic of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. • The most famous eggs in history were produced by the House of Fabergé for Alexander III and Nicholas II of Russia; these are often referred to as the 'Imperial' Fabergé eggs. Of the approximately 50 made, 42 have survived and sell for millions of dollars. • In the Orthodox tradition, the week before Easter is a time for spring-cleaning in the home.

Each year, the White House hosts an Easter Egg Roll on the front lawn. The tradition was started by President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1878. •

For Orthodox families, a fast is observed on Holy Saturday and not broken until after the midnight mass, when families come together to celebrate with mountains of food. The Easter Parade had its beginning in New York in the 1870’s. The social elite would attend church services and parade down Fifth Avenue so they could show off their new Easter clothes. The poplar Easter Lily is the fourth largest selling potted plant in America with 15 million Easter Lily bulbs grown in America. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest Easter egg ever made was just over 25 feet high and weighed 8,968 lbs. 33

assover is the spring Jewish holiday celebrating the redemption of the Israelites from slavery to freedom 3,000 years ago. At that time the Jews were held as slaves in Egypt and Moses was sent to Pharaoh to seek their release. Pharaoh did not release the Jews until ten plagues were visited upon the Egyptians. These plagues did not strike the Jewish households and after the tenth plague, Pharaoh released the Jews. • There is no fixed date for Passover. The date is dependant on the phases of the moon. • The first two nights of the eight-day holiday are celebrated with special meals called Seders in which the stories and history of Passover are celebrated. Special foods, plates, and silverware are all a part of the Seder. • At Seder, children are sometimes asked; “Why do we eat matzah (or matzo) – a bread with no yeast?” Answer: matzah reminds them that when the Jews left the slavery of Egypt they had no time to bake bread. They took the raw dough on their journey and baked it in the hot desert sun into hard crackers called matzah. • After the main meal, children search for a piece of matzah that has been hidden. This piece of matzah is called “afikomen” which means dessert. The Seder cannot be officially concluded until the afikomen is eaten. By Juantia Jahn

Fun activities of all kinds are a great way to help them burn energy, calories and build relationships. The simplest games such as “duck, duck goose” are fun and simple ways to do just that. You can them involved through groups, camps or memberships, or just gather the kids in the neighborhood for some good old fashioned “team sports!” Don’t forget these long-time favorties: kickball, dodgeball, campture the flag, sack races and run for fun.
