COVER STORY “I like the weddings, but, of course, I cry. Still, they’re my favorites,” Corinne McDonnell said in describing events in the new Balaban’s® party rooms. A true romantic, McDonnell helps plan rehearsal dinners, weddings, birthday parties and corporate events as Balaban’s event and catering manager. Her training in project management and floral design brings creativity and professionalism to a job which also builds on her family restaurant experience. For more than nine months she has managed Balaban’s new private event space which opened just in time for the 2012 holidays. McDonnell also oversees Balaban’s catering operation for in-home parties and corporate box lunches. Most of Balaban’s party space consists of a large attractive room decorated with mirrored French door panels, some of which conceal intriguing wine barrel ends mounted on the wall. With state of the art audio visual capacity, the space accommodates 80 for dinner or 100 for cocktails. L-R: Co-Owners McIntyre Co-Owners Steve Steve McIntyre (left) and Brian Underwood

Making Memories Balaban’s Party Rooms Provide the Perfect Space for Your Very Special Event McDonnell believes the piece de resistance of Balaban’s events takes place in the separate, intimate wine room. Small parties up to eight slip into private space where redwood shelves and $350,000 of Balaban’s Library Wines line the walls. “Dinners in the wine room come with a dedicated server, a menu of the customer’s choice, privacy and the most intriguing ambiance in the city,” McDonnell said, as she picked up a $960 bottle of Library Wine with a sketched label that could hang in an art museum, before pointing out that most of Balaban’s wines price under $20. Booking for holiday parties this year, McDonnell said, started weeks ago. For the holidays she often recommends a Balaban’s multi-coursed dinner, pairing the food and wine for a taste experience creating memories. “Whether a humorous birthday roast ribbing the honoree with a slide show of old photographs or a warm inviting dinner or a buffet style corporate event, we do it all—everything designed to the customers’ specifications, whether corporate or personal, in-home or here,” McDonnell said. “The quality of the Balaban’s kitchen, recognized by St. Louis Magazine as one of the best in the city, and the wine cellar, awarded a best of award of excellence from

Wine Spectator for the second consecutive year, mean the basics of any good party start at Balaban’s.” McDonnell enjoys the events and currently looks forward to a birthday party, marking several decades, already booked with a band for this November. Balaban’s Library Wines come from the original award winning Café Balaban cellar. Meticulously selected by co-owner Steve McIntyre, the wines, superbly handled and aged for 10 to 25 years, now make Balaban’ a cellar of consequence with the ability to pair superb food and wine. Other ties to the original Central West End bistro which closed in 2006 include the name “Balaban’s,” solely owned by McIntyre and his partner, Brian Underwood; the original recipes; some Café Balaban’s staff as well as McIntyre, executive chef and co-owner of Café Balaban for more than 20 years. 1722 Clarkson Rd (at Baxter) Chesterfield, MO Phone 636-449-6700 Online balabanswine.com selectwineonline.com

A Wedding in Wine Country The Perfect Venue for your Perfect Day

Y

our wedding day should be as individual as you are. Comfort, style and ease are all attainable at one of the many wineries in our area. A range of options give you complete control; the families who own and operate the wineries are eager to make your occasion a day you’ll always cherish. Consider framing your “I do’s” in the sunshine of a spectacular, Missouri setting, where your guests can enjoy the beauty of both your wedding and the spectacular landscapes of Missouri Wine Country. MONTELLE WINERY Montelle Winery is ready to host your wedding ceremony and/or reception with style and substance. Situated atop the Osage Ridge, the view of the Missouri River Valley will surround your event, giving a beautiful background to your day- whatever the season or weather.

“The Point”, a gorgeous outdoor space ready for your wedding rehearsal and wedding, will be bedecked with seating and a wrought iron arbor to encircle your nuptials. The Stone House will be available as a bridal dressing room; a personal attendant will be at your service to assist you and the grounds of Montelle will offer many breathtaking settings for your wedding photographs. The facility can accommodate up to 120 guests—a perfect number for that intimate and romantic feel. Montelle also has you covered with a reception dinner package. Rehearsal dinners are available; packages include either the covered deck or indoor dining and gourmet menus served with elegance and style. Both open bar and cash bar options exist; details are available on their website.

This is an affordable yet elegant choice for your wedding, with a ceremony package that includes LED lighting options, audio system and all the standard amenities needed for a perfect event. Their reception package offers a buffet dinner with menu options, an hors d’ oeuvres display and handpicked wine selections. Balducci is ready to help you with every aspect of your event, from decorations and music to menu and wine selection. They can accommodate up to 200 guests, and their landscaped property and surrounding views will give you dozens of photography setting options. Good Luck Traditions For Your Wedding Day 1. Rain on your wedding day? Some say it’s actually good luck. An old wives’ tale explains that when “tying the knot”, rain on the union makes the bond stronger and harder to break. 2. For good luck, Egyptian women pinch the bride on her wedding day. Ouch! 3. In Sweden, a bride puts a silver coin from her father and a gold coin from her mother in each shoe to ensure that she'll never do without. 4. In Holland, a pine tree is planted outside the newlyweds' home as a symbol of fertility and luck.

T

hrift stores and consignment shops have become not only trendy but a way to save money. They are popular because customers can buy almost anything imaginable-even items that aren’t in production anymore. Sometimes these stores take digging and plowing through to find treasures, but somewhere in there you can find a gently used product or even a brand new product left over from boutiques that have closed. Thrift stores and consignment shops can make it easy to put together a look that is all your own. After creating an outfit or designing a room from a thrift store or consignment shop purchase, it is rather difficult for someone else to have the same look (which all girls know, we hate!).

Here are several in the area: Goodwill is one of the most famous thrift stores in the country. This national thrift store sells furniture, clothing, shoes, housewares, jewelry, electronics, toys, and books. Goodwill uses their proceeds to help local services that assist the handicapped, veterans, victims of domestic violence, people trying to climb out of poverty, and people in their vocational programs. According to Dave Kutchback, Assistant CEO/Chief of Staff at MERS Missouri Goodwill Industries, “our customer demographic leans toward all family members. We see large numbers of middle class people looking for famous brands at rock-bottom prices.” Clothing is the item that is bought most often in Goodwill stores. Spring and fall tend to be the busiest times of the year because the new season’s clothes are being brought out to sell. Another thrift store that is recognized for doing good in the community is Savers. Savers sells furniture, housewares, media, clothing and accessories. Halloween costumes, movies, and holiday season decorations are expected to be major sellers this fall. “Our longstanding success hinges on solid working relationships with 140 nonprofit partners across the US, Canada, and Australia. Every time you donate reusable clothing and household items either to them or directly to us at one of our stores via a Community Donation Center, we pay them. Over the past 10 years, we’ve paid more than $1.5 billion!” says a representative from Savers.

bitter cold wind swirls through crackling leaves, reminding us that Halloween—that spookiest of holidays—is almost here. Our celebration of this ancient day can range from family-friendly to downright terrifying, but we all enjoy the shivery excitement of this creepy night. We’ve dressed up in everything from Casper costumes to chainsawripped rags, carved huge orange melons into grinning lanterns and begged for candy from our neighborhood friends since the late 1800s. Though the origins of these traditions may have been pagan and somewhat gruesome, modern life has turned Halloween into a yearly celebration of fun and make-believe.

BOO! The Origins of

Halloween Traditions

Jack-O-Lanterns During ancient Celtic times, glowing jack-o-lanterns, carved from turnips or gourds, were set on porches and in windows to act as protection against malevolent spirits. Early Irish settlers found pumpkinsnative to America-easier to carve, and burning lumps of coal were used inside as a source of light, later to be replaced by candles.

Halloween Costumes The tradition of dressing in costume for Halloween has both European and Celtic roots. Hundreds of years ago, winter was a time of famine for many, and those afraid

of the dark dreaded the short daylight of the winter months. On Halloween, it was believed that ghosts came back to the earthly world. People thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes. To avoid being recognized by the ghosts, people wore masks outside after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. People also place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter.

During ancient Celtic times, glowing jack-o-lanterns, carved from turnips or gourds, were set on porches and in windows to act as protection against malevolent spirits Trick-or-Treating Our Halloween tradition of "trick-ortreating" probably dates back to the early All Souls' Day parades in England. During the festivities, poor citizens would beg for food, and families would give them pastries in return for their promise to pray for the family's dead relatives. By the turn of the 20th century, parents had successfully turned Halloween into a family party, celebrated by all ages with games, food and festive costumes. Neighborhood Parties and Celebrations Halloween evolved into a more community-friendly holiday in the mid-twentieth century, with town-wide parades and parties. Trick-or-treating returned to popularity as an inexpensive way for neighborhoods to celebrate. In theory, families could also prevent tricks being played on them by providing the neighborhood children with small treats.

Hayrides Rural America in the late 1800s was not known for frivolous fun. Farm work was hard; the long days of summer were spent tending to livestock and gardens. When fall came and the harvest was finished, it was time to celebrate. Halloween was the perfect holiday to utilize the wagons and horses for a trip along winding roads in the crisp air. Often, the ride was accompanied by haunted stories and scary scenes set up along the route. More often, the ride was a chance to be together with friends, to pitch a little woo (if you know what that means, you’ve done it!) in the scratchy hay, and just make memories. And, of course, the hayride usually ended with a blazing bonfire. Whatever your Halloween plans, enjoy the make-believe of this unusual celebration. by Robin Garrison Leach

The Legend of "Stingy Jack" The practice of carving Jack O’ Lanterns came from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed "Stingy Jack." According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. Stingy Jack didn't want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form. Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. Soon after, Jack died. As the legend goes, God would not allow such an unsavory figure into Heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into Hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth with ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as "Jack of the Lantern," and then, simply "Jack O' Lantern."

• Sa u v i g n o n B l a n c v s . F u m e B lanc: These are the same grape. Sauvignon has citrus and grapefruit characteristics. Usually medium to high in acidity. Fume has the same characteristics except it's aged in oak barrels. This gives the wine a tint of wood. • Pinot Grigio vs. Pinot Gris: These are also the same grape. A lot of wine people refer to Pinot Grigio as Italian in origin. Pinot Gris origin is every other place except Italy. • Chablis is a French Chardonnay. • Red Burgundy is a French Pinot Noir. • Shiraz vs. Syrah: This is also the same grape. Shiraz is referred to the wine whose origin is Australia. Syrah is from every other country. Australian style of Shiraz is very fruit forward. Syrah, in general, is very earthy and dryer than Shiraz. The way the wine is made brings out the different flavor profiles. • Syrah vs. Petite Sirah: Two completely different grapes that produce different wines. Petite Sirah is so dark it's almost black. There is also a slight smell of concord grapes. Petite Sirah is much bigger than Syrah. It is the classic "teeth stainer." • The word "Meritage" is a name from California. It refers to an American Bordeaux blend. The roots of this word is California by nature, not French. When pronouncing this word, remember it rhymes with heritage.
