That’s not what comes to mind when the word “park” is mentioned. But this is a special place; an historic route that retraces the paths of explorers, immigrants, and the Missouri-Katy-Texas Train Line. It winds along the Missouri River and sidles up against craggy bluffs. It slices through thick brush and verdant meadows. And it meanders across our county, passing historic places and towns as old as the hills in which they nestle. are smiles waiting to greet and happy people to provide food, rest, and services to visitors. St. Charles County is proud to be part of the Katy Trail route, and businesses flourish all along the way. MILE MARKER 66.3: AUGUSTA The Augusta Trailhead gives travelers a place to stop and relax. Just a few steps away, the town is open for business and ready to provide food, lodging, shopping and exploration. This is a wine-lovers’ paradise, being designated the “First United States Wine District” in 1980. Several wineries are open and ready to greet thirsty visitors, including the Montelle, Sugar Creek, Balducci, and Augusta wineries. Numerous bed-and-breakfasts are available here, and “quaint” is the perfect description for their ambiances. Stop in for snacks for your trip at the neighborhood grocery stores, or feast on fresh meals at several businesses in the area. Klondike State Park is here; a beautiful place to see the bluffs and the river. This is a perfect area for friends and family to rest and enjoy the beauty and atmosphere of an historic town while sampling some of the best wines in Missouri. For more info and an updated list of businesses, call the Augusta Visitors Association at 636-228-4005 or visit www.mostateparks.com and click on the map. MILE MARKER 60.6: MATSON Though Matson is just a small stop along the Katy Trail route, it is a welcome one. Restrooms are available, and the Daniel Boone Judgment Tree is near the trail (where Daniel Boone held court during his tenure as judge of the area in the early 1800’s). Sugar Creek Winery is just a smidgen west of town.

The Katy Trail is truly a wonder of conservation. More than just a place to traverse; the park is thick with nature - some exclusive to Missouri. MILE MARKER 59.1: DEFIANCE Ever wonder how Defiance got its name? In 1894, the town built a railroad depot here, to lure the train route and the boon it would provide. Defiance is just as scrappy and proud as ever; businesses here will welcome you with services and goods, and attractions to keep you entertained. Food and drink is plentiful within Defiance. The Tavern at Defiance has live music on Saturday nights, as does Terry and Kathy’s Bar and Grill right across the street. Both offer food and fun. Several bed-and-breakfasts will welcome you. Among them are the Inn at Defiance (so close to the trail you could almost lean back and be inside!) and Parson’s House. Shopping is great here eclectic offerings and handmade treasures share space with supplies and essentials for your trip. A big attraction for trail travelers is the Katy Trail Bike Rental, where you can rent several types of bicycles (even tandem bikes and toddler trailers!) by the day or the hour. Visit the plant nurseries nearby: Wine Country Gardens and Frizella Nursery for the sheer beauty of it. And if you’re hankering for a sip of wine, check out Yellow Farmhouse Winery, or any of

the several other wineries around Defiance. The Daniel Boone Home is just outside Defiance; a must-visit destination. The four-story structure was hand built with quarried Missouri limestone and black walnut wood. Visit www.defiancemissouri.com for a list of the many businesses and places of interest in Defiance. You may want to call ahead; these are private businesses and hours/services vary. MILE 39.5: ST. CHARLES After several trailheads and pit stops along Katy Trail (like Weldon Spring Trailhead - Mile Marker 56, and Green Bottom Road Trailhead - Mile Marker 45.7), travelers enter the largest city on our section of the State Park: St. Charles.

BE CONSIDERATE: BE SAFE Katy Trail park rangers ride the trail, patrolling and keeping things safe. You should not expect any problems on the trail; its rural setting makes it the perfect getaway for families. • Responsibilities in the park are mainly ones of daily life: be considerate of others and of the environment... • Don’t litter - carry your trash with you and dispose of it at the trailheads. Respect property owners along the Trail - don’t trespass... • Dogs are allowed on the Trail, but must be on a leash at all times... • For your safety and the safety of motorists near the Trail, obey traffic signs and wear bright or reflective colors to make yourself visible. 23

Katy Trail skirts the edge of St. Charles, mirroring the Missouri River. This is the landmark stop for visitors to the Trail. Rich in Missouri history and maintaining its links to that past, St. Charles gives Katy enthusiasts enough accommodations, attractions, and places to visit than can be experienced in a day. From first-class hotels to charming inns and cottages, coffee houses to elegant restaurants, St. Charles is bursting with things to see and enjoy. After a meal and a rest, take a stroll through Historic Main Street and the Historic Frenchtown District. Relax along the bank of the Missouri river and wander among the shops and businesses. With so many things to see and do in St. Charles, Katy Trail hikers and bikers can plan their visits by checking with the St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau for complete information and contact numbers for all things St. Charles. Visit www.historicstcharles.com or call 1-800-366-2427. SPEND A DAY OR A WEEKEND Having Katy Trail State Park literally a walk away is just one of the many advantages living in St. Charles County provides. The park is level and easy to navigate, bordered by friendly towns and operated by the Department of Natural Resources. There is no fee to travel the Trail, and it is safe and familyfriendly. Plan to spend part of your summer rediscovering the beauty of our neck of the woods. Grab a bike, tighten your shoelaces, and grab your water bottle, sunscreen, and insect repellant (this is the outdoors, after all!). Katy Trail will lead you along a path to natural beauty and great family fun. uly and August are ideal months to pack up a basket of your favorite foods, grab your favorite people and head down to the neighborhood park for a picnic. Somehow, simple meals taste better when they’re shared beneath the broad limbs of a tree or seated along the rough bench of a sturdy picnic table. You don’t have to over- think or over –plan it; the best part of a picnic is the spontaneity. Everything you need for a safe, fun-filled afternoon at the park is right at your fingertips.

Food Safety: Keep Cold Foods Cold and Hot Foods Hot

Simple Ideas For Fun Picnics are great for relaxing, but kids aren’t fans of relaxing. Cook up some activities to make the day fun for even the antsy-est member of your troop. Have a scavenger hunt. Write it up ahead of time; bring a prize for the winner. Look for pictures in the clouds. Bring bubbles, bug keepers (empty bottles filled with moist grass), a guitar—if you dare—and fishing poles if you’re near a lake. Remember “Mother-May-I”? “Red Light, Green Light”? “Hide and Seek”? Give your kids the same memories.

It’s Picnic Time

Enjoy Family Time and Make Some Summer Memories

Picnic baskets are fine for cutlery, cups, napkins and foods that don’t need to be kept cool, but everything else should go in a cooler. Freeze

Pack These Essentials

water bottles and place them on top of your food—not only will they keep things cold, you also drink them. Your cooler should register 40 degrees or below. Pack raw foods in the bottom of your cooler so their juices won’t leak onto other food. Don’t transport your cooler in the trunk. When you get to your picnic spot, put the cooler in a shady place and open it as little as possible.

Use Common Sense When Cooking and Eating Outdoors Make sure all meat is cooked thoroughly. It’s a good idea to take a meat thermometer with you. According to www.foodsafety.gov , grilled burgers should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees; chicken breasts, 165 degrees. When cooking at the site, don’t use the same platter for both raw and cooked meat. Employ the “Two Hour Rule” to your meal: perishable food should go in the cooler within two hours after eating. If you pick up a bucket of cooked chicken or other already-cooked meals, you should eat them within one hour of purchase.

Protect Yourself Against Insects You’re outside. There will be bugs. But you can still enjoy your picnic. Try these tips. Bees: Wear light-colored clothing and avoid perfumed soaps or deodorants. Mosquitoes: They’re most active at dusk and through the night. Wear repellant and reapply after swimming or excessive sweating. Ticks: Insect repellant helps, but nothing can fully protect you from ticks. On windy days, ticks fall from trees and bushes. Check yourself and your children throughout the day. Follow basic safety directions to remove ticks. If a rash or other symptoms develop, see your doctor. 24

Where to Picnic in St. Charles County Sure, you could have a picnic in your back yard, but why not expand your fun? With multiple city parks as well as county parks within a short drive of anywhere in the West County area, you can have a picnic with a new view every week of summer. Go to www.sccmo.org and look under “Parks and Recreation” to find a list of parks, their amenities, hours and directions. Many parks offer pavilions, tables, playgrounds, pools, fishing areas and hiking and biking trails. Broemmelsiek and Quail Ridge Parks have special “Off-Leash” dog areas. For city parks contact your local government offices for infomation and locations.

ing Monday, station management called and offered me a job doing my own show. They said they enjoyed the “raw” approach. I accepted the position.

Michael: What is your connection to St. Louis, in your words, with the people, the industry, and our city?

Meet Smash Michael Grafman interviews St. Louis’ most well known DJ and radio personality

Y

ou may have heard him on the radio as Smash or “Asher Benrubi.” For almost 30 years, we've been blessed to have one of the nicest most entertaining disc jockeys here in St. Louis. I've known Smash for about 20 years and let me tell you, he is real. He gets it! I sat down and chatted with him via emails, but of

course, and asked him some questions about his rock n roll connection to St. Louis. Michael: Smash, how did you get started in broadcasting? Smash: In the 60s and 70s I was a relatively well known musician/entertainer in my hometown of Indianapolis. WNAP Radio, on Friday

nights, would have “Celebrity DJ Night.” They invited local well knowns to come in and do their own radio show. In 1977, I came in. They showed me how the studio operated. I didn’t listen closely because I figured they’d have someone running the board for me and I’d just talk on mic. They then left. I was alone. No board op. Since I didn’t pay attention, I didn’t know what I was doing. I’m on my own playing two, three songs at the same time…didn’t know how to stop them. One commercial on top of another. All was crazy. At the end of “The Show,” I left very embarrassed. The follow-

Smash: My connection to the St. Louis area comes from “acceptance.” Shortly after I arrived here from Washington, D.C. (DC-101 Rock & Roll Radio!) the city, the people, charities, civic, the businesses and sponsors, radio and the “Rock & Roll Community” accepted me and my “style” on and off-the-air. With appreciation, I’ve always tried to put forth positive vibes, help and do good things for people no matter what stage I was on…radio, television, nightclub, bandstand, etc. My connection to St. Louis is born of “acceptance” and I have always been grateful. Michael: What is your most memorable broadcasting experience in St. Louis? Smash: Each experience was good in it’s own individualistic fashion. But, I was production voice for the Rams for a dozen years. At the same time, Smash

Band was “The Official Rams Tailgate Party Band.” After the Super Bowl win, along with Jack Snow (one of my heroes growing up), I got to co-host the victory party for 100,000 fans in Keiner Plaza as it was broadcast on radio and television all over the country. Smash Band played it. It was freezing…but phenomenal. Michael: Who was most instrumental in St. Louis in helping you build your career? Smash: I worked radio and television in Indianapolis, D.C. and St. Louis. In each spot, I

always tried to not be like anySupe body else on the air.performing So, I kind of built what I couldwith from audiOzark ence acceptance (as IMountain mentioned Daredevils earlier) of my “Smash” character. But, in truth, the “building” of my career here in St. Louis occurred in response to my competing with J.C. Corcoran. His fans, following and sponsors were/are so large that I had to become a better broadcast entertainer so as to effectively compete against him as KSHE had employed me to do. And since he was/is a friend from our days working together in D.C., the competi-

tion was way fierce…but, big fun. I tried to build better because of that competition. Michael: Your concerts and events are amazing. Tell us, how did you start your own band and your musical career in general? Smash: In an interview, I was once asked about how cool it must be to be a “DJ with a band.” I responded, “Must be.” Huh? I told the interviewer that I never considered myself a “DJ with a band”…I always considered myself a “musician with a radio show.” In the 60’s, in the days of “The Ed Sullivan Show,” seeing Elvis, all the Motown artists, The Beatles, The Stones, The Animals, Dave Clark 5 and especially the Young Rascals, I said, “That’s what I wanna do!” Shortly thereafter, some friends and I started our high school garage band…”Frenchie & The OuiOuis” (we thought we were sly with the play on words). We built us into Indy’s top party band…and I’ve been a party singer/entertainer ever since. Michael: When you aren't performing or working on a project, what do you do with your free time, as if you have any!?

L-R: Smash poses with the K-SHE race car

Smash: When not hanging with my kids or my wife “Mama Smash,” I like working the band. Working is relaxing to me. I like to work out, too. Cars, I dig. Like listening to music. Michael: What are some of your favorite bands? Smash: I like ‘em all. No matter the style. Be they musicians/artists from international,

to national, to regional, to local…and now, from the internet, to the universal level. Being a musician, entertainer, promoter, producer myself…I know what you have to go through no matter the level. And I’m appreciative of a musician’s creativity, effort and place. But, if I were forced to take only one artist’s music with me everywhere I go, it would/will be the music of Bruce Springsteen. Michael: Your views on radio today and where its heading? Smash: It’s already started, but by the end of this decade, all automobiles (for example) will have internet access on those dash screens. This will open up (and for some already has opened) opportunities for a new group of “cyber casters or net casters” to develop and grow forth as the original “broadcasters” did. With their own “shows,” they will deliver content, opinion, music, info, noninfo, entertainment and such to a degree and extent that will leave the “listener/viewer” with so many choices that you won’t know what to choose. But, having that situation and the options therefrom can and will be cool. Knowing that it’s all about screens from here on out…we can deduce that we are on the threshold of another “Brave New World.” Thank you Smash, aka Asher ben Rubi, for being our featured guest here at St. Louis' Rock n Roll Connection! For our next guest, we are happy to share with you Mark Klose and his connection!
