fun, MO’ excitement at this year’s MO’ Cowbell Half

Marathon and 5K... Thousands of runners and spectators will soon be ringing cowbells and enjoying the festivities during the second annual MO’ Cowbell Half Marathon and 5K starting 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 7 in Frontier Park on the historic St. Charles riverfront. Hailed as the “fastest and flattest course in metro St. Louis,” MO’ Cowbell is organized by the civic group Partners for Progress of Greater St. Charles in cooperation with Big River Running Company. “There is a serious buzz in the region about MO’ Cowbell, especially when you consider we had 1,500 runners in 2011 and now expect 3,000 or more this year,” said Kerin Abbey, race chair. And yes, she confirmed, the name is partially inspired by the hilarious SNL skit with Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken.

until runner packet pickup. Another new edition this year is the Health and Fitness ExMO’. It will feature about 30 health and fitness companies and will be held during runner packet pickup at Lindenwood University’s Hyland Arena on Friday, Oct. 5 and Saturday, Oct. 6. There will also be a Post-Race Party and Awards in Frontier Park starting around 9:30 a.m. on Race Day. Come enjoy live

A portion of all proceeds will benefit Volunteers in Medicine. On Race Day, please bring shoe donations for the Shoeman Water Projects collection at the Runner’s Village.

MO’ Runner Spotlights When Jamie Palmer runs a race, he never runs alone. That’s because he pushes his wheelchairbound brother Robbie, a 30-year-old spastic quadriplegic. And MO’ Cowbell will be the first half marathon for both of them! Calling Robbie his driving force, Palmer said, “He gets to sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. I think if it was the other way around, he would definitely push me in a heartbeat.” Heather Reding is a runner who started having difficulties breathing and then was shocked to discover she had lung cancer. But even while undergoing aggressive treatment, she never gave up and continued to run and train. The week after finishing chemotherapy, Reding crossed the finish line at her first half marathon to the wild cheers of family and friends. Now in remission, she is ready and raring to go for MO’ Cowbell!

Cons: The policy is temporary. One of the key benefits of term life is also its biggest risk. If your term expires and you still have life insurance needs, you’ll re-enter the market as an older and potentially less-healthy consumer. That means significantly higher premiums, provided you’re coverable at all. The benefit may not be paid. Some people chafe at the idea of paying for a benefit their beneficiaries may never receive. If you stay current with your premiums and take

premiums you pay for a whole life policy become part of the policy’s cash value. After an introductory period, this cash value becomes available to you through loans1 or as a surrender value. You can even report the cash value as an asset when applying for a line of credit. Any way you choose to use it – if you choose to use it – the cash value of a whole life policy provides another level of financial security for your family. You may receive dividends. Although

Term Or Whole Life Insurance: Which Is Right For You? TERM LIFE With term life, you pay premiums for a certain period and in exchange, the insurer agrees to pay your beneficiaries a stated benefit if you pass during that time. Pros: You’ll receive great value. Term insurance can be purchased in large amounts for relatively small premiums. You can match terms to needs. Most people purchase term life to provide for their dependents. Once your kids are grown, your mortgage is paid off, and your retirement is nicely funded, you may have little use for a policy.

care of your health, you’ll receive no reward for outliving your policy. WHOLE LIFE Whole life insurance provides a death benefit throughout your life. It also includes a cash value component that accrues value over time, allowing you to borrow or withdraw funds as needed. Pros: Lifetime coverage. A whole life policy covers the rest of your life, not just a stated term. As long as your policy is in force when you pass away, your beneficiaries will receive a death benefit. You’ll retain access to your money. The 21

dividends are not guaranteed, the possibility of earning extra income is an attractive feature. Cons: Higher initial premiums. The first years are often higher, however, the lifetime levels become more ffordable over time, while renewals can involve significantincreases in premiums. Be sure to discuss your options with a qualified insurance representative or certified financial planner and consult your tax and legal advisor regarding your situation. mingled with the odor of the freshlymopped hallway floor leading there. I still remember my librarian, Mrs. McMullen. She was probably in her 40’s, but looked ancient to my 11-year-old eyes. She wore glasses (of course) and met me with a smile that both welcomed me and warned me to be quiet and to “respect the collection.” The walls were bare, except for a few watercolor paintings from local artists. There was no sound unless Mrs. McMullen was stamping due dates inside books or someone was thumbing through the card catalog. That was a long time ago. I haven’t aged (!), but libraries have changed so dramatically in the last 40 years that you wouldn’t recognize the place.

Missouri’s Weinstrasse Take a Scenic Trip Through Wine Country

W

ith the weather finally cooling into fall’s welcome chill, it’s time to get out and feel alive again. The trees may not color as beautifully as we’d like because of the summer drought, but the appeal of enjoying nature at its most accommodating is still reason to celebrate. What better way to get outdoors and reconnect with nature than to take a lazy, relaxed trip along the highway that offers the best wines in the most beautiful settings in Missouri. Highway 94 in St. Charles County gives a sweeping view of the Missouri River Valley and is nationally recognized as the very first federally approved American Viticultural Area. With only 15-square miles to call its own, our Weinstrasse (wine trail) produces some of the finest wines in America. Our geographic diversity made this area uniquely suited to wine production. Flooding in the Missouri River Valley in 1872 caused the river to change its course, leaving behind a distinct soil type in the Augusta area. The vineyards planted here in the years following the floods yielded crops that began receiving widespread recognition for their distinctive flavors and profiles. Through the years, the vineyards throughout the Weinstrasse have gained international attention and local acclaim, winning multiple awards. Visitors to the wineries enjoy an experience in taste and scenic beauty and relaxed sophistication that rivals any other in the country. Discover these award-winning wines at four family owned wineries: Sugar Creek, Augusta, Balducci, and Montelle—along with several other outstanding wineries— and enjoy more than 100 different selections in wines. With so many locations and wine choices, you’re sure to find your own favorite place to visit again and again.

Ken and Becky Miller and son, Chris Lorch

In 1984, Ken and Becky Miller sold everything and moved from Kirkwood to their dream property in Defiance. In the years following, their leap of faith has yielded a business that gives them great joy. Ken’s grandfather, Michael Belmonte, came to America from Italy. He had a passion for wine-making that coursed through generational veins. Sugar Creek Winery offers a signature red wine, called “Michael’s” that pays tribute to Ken’s grandfather and his influence. Becky’s son, Chris, learned about winemaking in Napa Valley and brought his expertise home to Missouri to join them as their winemaker. April through November, the weekends at Sugar Creek in Defiance are alive with music, food and a relaxing atmosphere. Whether you choose to sit outside on the terraces, visit the tasting rooms or lounge in the parlor of this turn-of-the-century Victorian home, you will find your visit an unforgettable experience. Their wines and other offerings sound as delicious and unique as the winery itself. Names like Blackberry Thicket and Raspberry Patch mingle with other estate24

grown selections and give a variety of choices for every palate. Whether you decide to enjoy your wine here or take it home, you will taste and appreciate the Millers’ personal touch.

Fall is the perfect time to treat yourself to the view from Balducci Vineyards. Atop a hill overlooking 76 acres of farmland, vineyard and countryside, you will find it easy to relax on their scenic terraces and inside the tasting room. Rick and Carol Balducci, who established the vineyards in 1988 and opened the restaurant and wine garden in 2001, want your family to feel right at home. Nic, their son, is training to become the new winemaker. Carol runs the restaurant, serving award-winning fare similar to their Balducci’s Restaurant in Maryland Heights, which they’ve owned for 37 years. And Rick is in charge of the vineyards and other phases of the business. With so much acreage and a magnificent setting, Balducci’s can accommodate groups and occasions of any size. They invite you to sample their wines and special beers, dine in their restaurant, or just bring a blanket and picnic basket for your own version of Paradise. Their wines, both red and white, range from dry to sweet. Their best seller is a Riesling-style wine called Sonata. Visit for the atmosphere, historic view, incredible food, and - of course- the outstanding wines. MONTELLE WINERY 201 Montelle Drive, Augusta www.montelle.com 1-888-595-WINE or 636-228-4464 Just outside Augusta, Montelle is a 20acre spread of heaven atop Osage Ridge. Founded in 1970 by Clayton Byers, it was purchased by present owner and winemaker, Tony Kooyumjian, in 1988. With a philosophy of respect for the environment and the earth beneath the winery, Montelle is farmed and maintained with thoughtfulness and care. This has yielded wines that are recognized for 25

superior quality and unique profiles. Montelle is the first winery in Missouri to have a distillery. They produce four flavors of brandy: cherry, grape, peach and apple. Along with their wines, these selections will give your visit a variety of libations from which to select. Wine and food pairing is an art, and Montelle Winery’s Klondike Café is the perfect place to experience great food and accompanying wines. Enjoy gourmet wraps, sandwiches, pizza and salads. The Café also hosts Sunday Dinners on select evenings, with chef-prepared menus and a first-class dining atmosphere.

Grapes of Missouri

JJ’s Restaurant

• Norton/Cynthiana (sin-thee-ana) Norton grapes produce a rich, full-bodied dry red wine that can be similar in style to Cabernet Sauvignon, with the spicy overtones of a Zinfandel, and berry flavors that go nicely with red meat, smoked meat and wild game. The wine may be bottled as either a Cynthiana or Norton. • Chambourcin (sham-bor-san) Produces a medium-bodied red wine similar to a Pinot Noir, with a fruity aroma and cherry and earthy/spicy complexities. Serve with barbecue, pork, and pasta dishes. • Chardonel (shahr-du-nel) As a cross of the famed Chardonnay grape with the popular Seyval, Chardonel is usually barrel fermented, very dry and full bodied. This is great with heavier seafood dishes, as well as chicken with cream sauces. • Vidal (vee-dahl) Used to make a dry to semi-dry, full-bodied wine with fruity characteristics, somewhat like Italian dry whites. Vidal's clean citrus flavors of lemon and grapefruit create a nicely balanced wine that's perfect with seafood or poultry. • Vignoles (veen-yole) One of Missouri's most versatile white grapes,Vignoles produces wines ranging from dry to sweet late harvest dessert wines. Vignoles' luscious floral aroma and fruity flavors of pineapple and apricot are reminiscent of German Riesling. Ideal with Chinese food, fresh fruit, and fruit desserts.
