BACK COVER STORY

Turn your New Year’s Resolution into a New Lifestyle at the Renaud Spirit Center

A

s we kick off the New Year, many of us have made a resolution to “lose weight,” “get in shape,” or “exercise more.” Unfortunately, resolutions like these usually last only a few weeks because they are supported by fad diets or unrealistic workout schedules that you just cannot stick with in the long-term. This year, make your resolution more than just a resolution – make it a lifestyle change. Diets and ridiculous workout schedules may show short-term results, but as the days go on, our bodies rebel against them. We start craving those things that we are denying or that “day off ” becomes two weeks or even months off. Next thing you know, you’ve gained all the weight back and then some.

The key to a successful new year’s resolution can’t be found in the latest book in the supermarket aisle or in some late night infomercial, and it definitely cannot be found in a pill. It’s found in learning how to eat, exercise and finding the right balance in your life. If you can make real life changes, you’ll find that the changes will be more gradual, but far more effective and more permanent. And, rather than seeing your body rebel against your new choices, your body will begin to crave those things that are good for you. You’ll look forward to your workout, and you’ll crave an apple for a snack, rather than a handful of potato chips. When that happens, you’ll know your resolution has turned into a real life-style change.

7

Learn how you can make 2014 your healthiest year ever. Contact the Renaud Spirit Center at 636-474-2732 to set up a session with one of our personal trainers. Our trainers will help guide you on the path to a healthy lifestyle and make sure that your new year’s resolution helps build a new you! By Ty Joyce, Recreation Specialist

Enjoy Eagle Watching

t age 18, I saw a poster of a majestic looking eagle, wings spread, a mountain range behind and a bottom caption ... “All Americans are born free but many sell their liberty cheap. For those who don’t, the Eagle is their symbol.” Eagle watchers are best served by cruising 14 areas along the Mississippi and Illinois rivers from the Chain of Rocks bridge to a point a little north of Louisiana, Missouri. You’ll want to wear layered clothing accented with binoculars.

Plan your viewing time to accommodate the eagles feeding schedules, usually between the hours of sunrise and 11 AM. Be sure to look for what veteran eagle watchers call “baseballs in the trees” (due to the eagles white head),

19

Bring an extra dose of patience. Eagles move about in their own time. Also, new eagle watchers should be aware of the Eagle Protection Act in combination with the Criminal Fines Improvement Act of 1987 prohibiting possession of anything eagle, from a dead body to a mere feather. Instead, just listen for the shrill, high pitched, twittering cry eagles make and be happy with viewing or picture taking. Photo enthusiasts are encouraged to use a tripod, telephoto lens and a film rating of 400 ASA, or the equivalent with a digital camera. Eagles can also be viewed 363 days a year, 8 to 5 at the World Bird Sanctuary in Valley Park, Missouri as well as the Alton Visitor’s Center in Alton, Illinois. By Joe Palermo

he is the one person who makes your heart race, who knows your favorite color and who puts up with you when you’re sick and crabby. February 14th is your chance to thank her for loving you just as you are. Sure. You could get her flowers…she’d love it. Or candy…she’d like that, too. But you know what she’d love? Something that sparkles—that has sentimental value—something that is as unique as she is. It’s been said that “diamonds are a girl’s best friend”. I like to think that diamonds—and all jewelry that is chosen and given with love—is also a man’s best friend. Your efforts will be appreciated and your gift will be treasured forever. The jewelers in St. Charles County are ready to make your Valentine’s Day one to remember. The people there know how to make you feel welcome and are happy to help you select that perfect gift. J. Hampton Jewelers 4101 Mexico Road, Suite R St. Peters, MO 636-928-1883 www.jhamptonjewelers.com Matt Hampton of J. Hampton Jewelers in St. Peters knows how to make you feel at home in his store. He and his wife Estelle have owned the business since March; he has over a decade of jeweler’s experience and knows how to listen with his heart. “Choosing jewelry shouldn’t be complicated or feel uncomfortable,” Matt says. “We want to make the process of jewelry purchase easy and attainable. We can create something as simple or ornate as you like…all price ranges and styles.” Matt’s idea of the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for your special woman? “Diamond studs are a wardrobe essential. They go with everything; and she’ll think of you whenever she wears them.”

RESOLVE to Be FIT in 2014! Turning Small Changes into Good Habits he New Year inspires us all to make big plans for better fitness. Most New Year’s resolutions focus on weight loss and health-related improvements, yet on average only 20% of us are able to make good on our promises to ourselves. Maybe we try to change too much in our routines too quickly, or maybe we just expect too much. But whatever the reasons, we all know how difficult it is to maintain a fitness strategy beyond the first month or two of our yearly resolutions. This year, consider making just a few simple changes in your normal routine. Little changes add up to noticeable improvements in both your attitude about fitness and the way you feel about your body. Whether you want to lose a few pounds or just develop better health habits, here are some tips that may help. Many you’ve heard before, but if you incorporate only two or three into your routine you will be making a positive change.

T

TAKE THE STAIRS I take the elevator even when it’s just a floor or two, and I’m not alone. Only about 6% of people use the stairs in public buildings. It’s a habit I’m going to break this year. Look for the stairway and make a conscious effort to use it whenever you can.

1

Lose the TV! According to a study published by the Annals of Behavioral Medicine, people who lost at least 10% of their body weight and kept it off for five years or more had fewer TV’s in their homes than overweight people. (Maybe we could just move our TV’s around every day for exercise?)

2

3

(see TV suggestions) Vacuuming burns 105 calories in a half-hour. Dusting burns 75 and shoveling snow uses 105. Remote control clicking? None. Put on some music and embarrass your kids by moving and grooving as you do your housework. If you want to see how many calories you burn according to your weight and what types of activities you do, go to www.healthstatus.com and use their “Calories Burned Calculator”. Walk 300 Steps a Day I wouldn’t recommend counting aloud; you can get a pedometer. Park far away from store entrances and you’ll also eliminate the stress of losing your car in the lot. It’ll be the one waaayyy out there. Take walks –even short ones –and know you’re doing something good for yourself.

4

Keep Moving at Work If you have a desk job, you don’t have to stay idle. Move your legs back and forth while you’re sitting or tap your toes. Make it a habit to stretch often; get up and

5

24

move around when you can. Consider a short walk around the parking lot or building during lunch. Always Stay Cool! Being a bit chilly can help burn calories. And being too warm leads to naps. Go outside and move around in the cooler air. Stay active regardless of the temperature.

6

Give Yourself a Break If you’re like me, you’re tempted to give up when you falter in your plans to be healthier. That large order of Wendy’s fries, while delicious, won’t help you get back on track. Know that you’ll stray from your resolutions, and wake up each day ready to try again. Habits take time to develop, and nobody’s perfect.

7

2014 can be the year you make some small changes toward a better, healthier lifestyle. Make your resolutions ones you can truly keep, and keep working toward your goals. By Robin Garrison Leach

V

alentine’s Day seems to be increasingly about spending money on dining out at expensive restaurants, fancy chocolates in heart shaped boxes, a dozen or more red roses, or other expensive gifts, as well as a fancy card. The original intent of the holiday is to say “I Love You”, not to spend a ton of money. So this year how about giving a gift from the heart that doesn’t break the budget, yet still says “I Love You”.

Page 25

CELEBRATE

VALENTINE ’ S DAY ON A BUDGET

Perhaps one or more of these ideas will work for you, or spark an idea of your own:

1

Leave “Love Notes” all over. Write up lots of notes (pink sticky notes would work well) that tell your Valentine why you love them. The reasons could be romantic, amusing, or both. Stick in various locations, such as the bathroom mirror, a coat pocket, the sock drawer, the refrigerator, steering wheel of the car ... you get the idea.

2

Instead of buying a dozen red roses, how about one single red rose in a simple vase. Tie a bow around the vase and attach a love note or poem. The rose doesn’t have to be fresh. A beautiful ceramic, glass or lovely silk rose is long lasting - symbolizing your lasting love.

3

Make up a basket filled with paraphernalia for a romantic evening at home: candles, hot chocolate mix and mugs, or wine and wineglasses, romantic CDs, and some snacks. If you have a fireplace, make a fire (or turn on the gas logs!). If not, set out a profusion of candles. Put on your romantic music in the background ... and just relax and enjoy.

4

If snuggling in front of the fireplace isn’t your thing, then perhaps watching a romantic movie is more your style. Your basket could contain popcorn and other snacks, liquid refreshment, and a few movies. If you don’t have some favorites on hand, go to the library and pick out some DVDs.

5

Rather than giving the traditional chocolates in a heart shaped box, make your own Valentine Sweets gift. Buy a large mug, bowl or trinket box in pink, red or white and fill it with Hershey Hugs and Kisses. This is surely an inexpensive, romantic and delicious gift.

6 7

Make a handmade Valentine’s Day card with a note inside with all the things you love about your Valentine. Bring out old photo albums and spend the evening reliving special events in your life. If you don’t have an album, make this the year to start one, and then add to it each year. Begin a tradition to look at it every Valentine’s Day.

8

Here is a bit of a twist on the “Love Coupons Booklet” that many people like to make. Make the coupons, but don’t put them into a book. Instead decorate or even laminate each coupon and place them around the house. Then leave a trail of Hershey Kisses and Hugs from one coupon to the next. Decorate a small bucket for your Valentine to place the candy and coupons in while collecting them.

9

Shop thrift stores Mom’s Family Resale is the place to explore. You can get wine glasses, mugs, trinket 25

boxes, heart shaped pillows, baskets, photo albums, vases, silk flowers, and more at budget friendly prices. They will also help you put together gift baskets to match your budget, starting at $5.

10

Spend time as a family. Spend the day playing games, making Valentine’s cookies or cupcakes, or check out books from the local library. Check out www.amazingmoms.com for a great list of creative easy games. Discover oyour city.

11 12

Spend the day visiting local landmarks and museums. Or spend the day outside and go ice skating. Carry a thermos of hot chocolate and a box of home-made cookies. Of course if your budget does allow a night out, then consider one of these favorite restaurants- Aggie's Closet & Tea Room, Miss Aimee B’s, Rendezvous, Magpie’s or Fratelli’s. Miss Aimee B’s is serving a 4course Valentine Dinner on Friday & Saturday, February 14-15, featuring a four course gourmet dinner. You can always do lunch instead of dinner to save dollars. Or just go out for coffee and desssert. By Gail Hess
