FRONT COVER FEATURE: RETIREMENT LIVING IN FOCUS • Story by Robin Garrison Leach

Lake St. Charles Retirement Community Enjoy the Best of Both Worlds

All apartments have fully-equipped kitchens, but don’t think you’ll have to fend for yourself. One of the best things about Lake St. Charles is their expansive dining services. There are three—count ‘em—three restaurants here, providing 3 full-service meals 7 days a week, 365 days a year!

Keep Active, Make Friends, Enjoy Peace of Mind Lake St. Charles prides itself on their extensive activity calendar and numerous options for fun : day trips, shopping, crafts and card games, musical entertainment and themed parties. Want to stay close to home? A beauty salon, chapel, movie theater, library, variety store, personalized medical care options and more are right outside your door. Classes are offered in many areas of interest, from cooking to hand chimes. You can exercise in the gym, play pool, or take a walk around the acreage. Whether you want to hop in your car and run errands or enjoy the transportation provided, your mobility and quality of life will continue—and be enhanced— by the many specialty services, programs and conveniences Lake St. Charles offers.

Home For Every Stage of Life

F

or those of us over 55, home ownership becomes a responsibility many find increasingly burdensome. What was a quick mow across evergrowing grass in our 30s is now a chore we’d rather not deal with. And don’t get me started on property taxes, homeowners’ insurance, utility rates and all the hassles of home upkeep. But having a place to call home is a luxury we don’t want to give up. Thanks to Lake St. Charles Retirement Community, you can have all the perks of living independently without the hassles—and added benefits you may find priceless. Celebrating their 30-year anniversary of providing quality, affordable living in our area, Lake St. Charles has your best interests at heart. They know the amenities you need; they listen and accommo-

date your lifestyle with a variety of services and activities tailored to your desires and convenience.

Your Home - Your Way! Imagine being in your own apartment, sitting on a balcony or patio with friends who share your interests and timelines. You aren’t thinking about what needs to be done. You’re enjoying the sunset, making plans for activities you enjoy and just living the life you’ve earned. This is not a stodgy complex with cookie-cutter apartments and lackluster appeal. Lake St. Charles offers six different apartment floor plans—varying sizes and configurations—that will satisfy both your budget and your esthetic. No drudgery here; housekeeping services are provided. And you’ll feel safe with the 24-hour emergency response system Lake St. Charles offers.

In addition to the independent living at Lake St. Charles, assisted living options are also available, offering the same activities and socialization opportunities along with specialized, individual care.

Stop by For A Tour The people at Lake St. Charles are happy to show you around the community and answer any questions you may have. You may see just what you’ve been missing: a lifestyle you’ll love…and so richly deserve.

Stygar Family of Funeral Service

Our Foundation From humble beginnings in 1937, when John Joseph Stygar purchased Central Undertaking and Livery on Cass Avenue, the Stygar philosphy of service has grown strong. That first year, John J. performed about 40 funerals. It was a different time. Funerals were held at home. Communities were close-knit. Reputations were important. Losing a loved one is difficult for any family. We're honored that so many families have come to know and trust the Stygar family during their time of need. We will work diligently to preserve that trust now and into the future. And, we pledge to always do business in an honorable way that will make our children proud.

The Stygar family and our caring, professional staff is always available to serve you. Our services can be performed at either of our locations or at a church, a cemetery or any other location your family chooses.

• Arrangements with clergy, cemetery and florist • Pre-need funeral planning • Grief counseling/support for up to a year • Veteran's benefits counseling We offer a choice of quality funeral products in a wide range of prices and specialize in working within each family's budget to create a meaningful tribute to a loved one.

To Meet Every Family's Needs and Wishes, We Offer: • • • • • • •

h, what to do when the newness of summer has lost its charm, the kids have become restless and the video games have lost their appeal. How about a road trip? There are many wonderful destinations just a tankful of gas from home that will breathe new life into your summer. Here are few great ideas for some memorable family excursions... Arcola, Illinois (169 miles) Just a little more than two hours drive from St. Louis lies this quaint, historic community that offers plenty of activities for the whole family. Arcola’s claim to fame includes Rockome Gardens Theme Park, the Broom Corn Festival (the week-end after Labor Day), a Raggedy Ann and Andy Museum and the Amish Interpretive Center. Situated in Douglas County, Arcola is home to Illinois’ largest Old Order Amish Settlement. The rural area of town is lined with Amish homes, businesses and schools as well as horse-drawn buggies. A wonderful place to purchase Amish hand made furniture and crafts. The Rockome Gardens Park offers the opportunity to learn more about the local Amish community and watch the artisans in action. Hop on a buggy ride or train ride, try your your hand at fishing, ride a horse or best of all, sample the wonderful Amish food served family style in their own restaurant. You can enjoy all that Arcola has to offer in one long day or spend the night at one of the reasonably priced hotels close to the area. Either way, I’m sure you will visit more than once!

ummer is here, and it’s time to grab your gear and head to the nearest body of water. Whether you enjoy boating, fishing, swimming or just lazing on the bank, there is no better place to spend a lazy afternoon - or weekend. St. Charles County is fortunate in that it offers more lakes, ponds, and river access than you can shake a fishing rod toward. From Busch’s Wildlife managed lakes to the muddy Mississippi, we have it all. So, whatever your activity of choice, you’re just a short ride away from fun in the sun and surf. BOATING St. Charles County is home to a thriving boating community. The GREATER ST. LOUIS “SHOW ME THE MISSISSIPPI” BOATING ASSOCIATION is proud to introduce new boaters in the area to the numerous marinas, service points and restaurants along the Mississippi in our county. Because many marinas and access points are near residential areas, boaters can easily take in a day of boating mid-week without lengthy travel or complication. Numerous marinas

From Boating to Swimming to Fishing, St. Charles has all you need for a day of fun on or in the water abound along the Mississippi. Some are: Riverbend Marina, Polestar Marina and Port Charles Marina in St. Charles and Sherwood Marina in Portage Des Sioux. For Grafton boaters, Grafton Harbor awaits. Several access points to both the Mississippi and the Missouri rivers are available for boaters in our county. Whether you want to buzz across the water or find a quiet spot along the riverbank to camp, finding a place to “put in” will not be difficult. Some of the parks and conservation areas offering major access ramps to the Missouri River include: the Blanchette Access, Louis A Bangert Conservation Area, Klondike Park and Frontier Park.

20

The Mighty Mississippi’s boat accesses include: Hideaway Harbor Park, Dresser Island Conservation Area, Lincoln Slough Access, and Lincoln Shields Access. All these points may be researched more fully through the Missouri Department of Conservation’s website. Various regulations apply. Other boating opportunities are available in our county. The Yacht Club of St. Louis is located on the Dardenne Slough of the Mississippi River in St. Charles. Members enjoy entertainment and dining in a beautiful river setting. A marina and maintenance facility are nearby. The “Show Me the Mississippi” Boating Association has events throughout the season for its boating community. To learn more or to join the Association, visit www.showmethemississippi.org FISHING St. Charles County is home to more than 80 lakes, all with fish just waiting to be snagged. Sizes vary, as does access, but with a little research you can find a lake that suits your fishing style. The St. Charles County Parks Department can help you find a park that has fishing amenities. Of the more than 30 city and county parks in the county, over a third have fishable water. Some, like Klondike Park and Hideaway Harbor Park, offer river access and fishing. Others (Quail Ridge Park, Broemmelsiek Park, Indian Camp Creek Park, Klondike and others) have lakes and fishing ponds within their grounds for bank fishermen who like using a bobber. Visit www.sccmo.org for a link to the Parks website. Busch’s Wildlife Conservation Area is a good choice for both the novice fisherman and the seasoned angler; 32 fishable lakes are stocked and you can

choose a lake based on the type of fish it holds. Fishing from the bank is easy at most, and the lakes vary in size to accommodate both the boater and angler. Visit missouriconservation.com to see more info. Other lakes and ponds are splashed throughout the county; to see a list and locations, visit www.fishingworks.com. SWIMMING What is summer without swimming? Our county has a pool right around the corner from wherever you live. St. Charles Parks and Recreation operates three aquatic facilities, with programs from Junior Lifesaving programs to Tiny Tot swimming. They are the Blanchette, Wapelhorst, and McNair Aquatic Centers. All are available for party rental. Call 636949-3372 for more information. I

've known Charlie Daniels for just over 40 years when I met him in 1974 at the KSHE Kite Flying contest. My family had him over for our late mother's famous meatloaf and he in turn had us in Nashville TN for his Volunteer Jam back in the 80s. He is as humble and as down to earth a person you will ever meet and my

family is honored to know him. Michael: Charlie, please tell St. Louis how you created the Charlie Daniels Band, one of the country's most popular bands! Charlie Daniels: "I put the band together around 1971 when I got my first record deal. I tried to find

players who fit together musically and got along personally."

KSHE kite fly in 1974 and it has been a regular tour stop for us ever since."

Michael: What is your connection to St. Louis, in your words, with the people, the industry, and our city?

Michael: What is your most memorable experience in St. Louis?

Charlie Daniels: "St Louis was one of the first major markets to take the band to heart. KSHE played our music and the folks came to our shows." Michael: How about that free “kite flyin' contest” in the early 70s that you performed at in Forest Park? How did that impact your career? Skynyrd plane crashed and we went on stage knowing that some of our friends had been killed but we didn't know which ones. It was a strange night." Michael: How instrumental was St. Louis in building your career and your CDB?

Charlie Daniels: "It gave us an opportunity to play an entire set of our original music in front of a huge crowd of music lovers, to show them that we were a serious band and had something to offer."

here’s something about a County Fair: The complex smell of cotton candy mingling with pungent livestock odors and motor oil from the ride engines… Colorful tents with games that offer rewards for risk…Music blaring from every corner of a country field that has been transformed into a memory-making Wonderland. July and August are filled with fairs of all kinds; County Fairs as well as annual area fairs. It isn’t summer without a trip to a County or area Fair. Teaching Your Teen to Drive - A Primer If you've been driving for 20 or more years, you know how to teach your teenager how to drive, right? Maybe. Things have changed a bit since you took driver's ed. Here's a quick look at what to keep in mind: • Lower your hands. You probably learned to keep your hands at the "10 and 2 o'clock" positions on the steering wheel. Today, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends drivers put their hands at the 9 and 3 o'clock positions. One reason for the change? It potentially keeps hands out of the way if the airbag deploys. • Turn everything off. It's likely your teen will have a cell phone when he or she drives. Remind your teen to never text while driving, and encourage him or her to pull over before making a call. Even with hands-free devices, taking or making phone calls, searching for tunes on a media player or playing the radio too loudly all contribute to heightened risks for teen drivers.

an eye on the car in front of you, spot a fixed object that's even with that car. Then count how long it takes for your vehicle to reach the same object. If it's less than three seconds, allow more space between vehicles.

• Gradually learn to drive. Familiarize yourself with the graduated license rules in your state. Today's new drivers have limits for such things as the age at which they can get their learner's permit or license, the hours they can drive and the number of passengers they can carry. These limits allow teens to gain valuable on-the-road experience before being given an unrestricted license—and according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, have reduced teen crashes from 10 to 30 percent. • Keep your distance. You may have been taught to keep one car length per every 10 mph between your vehicle and the one ahead of you. Today, instructors recommend a simpler three-second rule: Keeping 25

• Don't cross over. Drivers used to learn a hand-over-hand crossover method for turning the steering wheel. Now to execute a turn, your teen will be advised to "push up" on one side of the wheel while "pulling down" on the other. • Remember the basics. Today's vehicles are far more "intelligent" than the cars you grew up driving. And while many of the features are designed to keep drivers safer—anti-skid controls, automated parallel parking and sensors that stop a car before collision—it's always a good idea for teen drivers to learn to make their own decisions and react to different driving situations
