CORTONA’S THREAD The system of istallations designed in the small city of Cortona, located in Tuscany, is conceived as part of a “game” that anyone can take part. A dense urban fabric and narrow and winding streets characterizes the city of Cortona. The impression one gets is that of loss and disorientation while being surprised by unexpected views interesting and special details at every turn. This quality has inspired the comparison with the labyrinth and consequently the legend of Ariadne’s thread. We digitized the thread by the integration to the game of an app and sensors various sensors throughout the city that communicate with this by providing clues to the player. The aim is to encourage who vi-

sit Cortona to chose alternative ways, different from the main avenue located in the center. At the same time it invites to explore the city not only through observation but with the use of all five senses and providing a more complete knowledge and understanding. The sensors, through sensory experience, will drive the player through the city and finally leading him into one of the five pavilions, each dedicated to one of the five senses and located at the ends of the village which hosts other activities and present themselves as a meeting point for the inhabitants too. Cortona becomes a smart city that communicates and is likely to be rediscovered in all its facets.

GREEN FOLDS The project area is located in a strategic point between the two EXPO’s poles of Rho Fiera and City Life as it presents itself as intermediate area between the two and is easily accessible. This premise has created the desire to create a new intermediate pole of attraction where Expo 2015’s themes can be fully addressed. The project born from the desire to create a new reality in the district. This objective has been achieved through the design of an large-scale attractor system, realized below the ground level by creating flaps which recall to mind the cutout gesture of a plant from the soil. The underground nature of the project, as well as act as a visual and acoustic barrier from the nearby factories, allows isolation from the reality of the district, entering into a space totally new and rich in offers for visitors. Indeed inside the issues associated with nutrition are faced through co-working spaces, retail outlets, a zero kilometer’s restaurant and a library, while urban gardens and cultivated areas will set up paths that are going to create in the area.

Two flows permeate the area through its main entrances. Those flows are the same wich dig the ground and give origin to the complex of buildings. Politecnico di Mlano | Laboratorio Progettazione 3 Professors | Fabrizio Zanni, Massimo Boffino Group members | Umberto Clerici, Alessandro Dorlini

GREEN ROOMS Gallarate and QT8 neighborhoods appear as a green carpet, characterized by the succession of a series of green islands, mostly in a state of decay or disuse. The project on a large scale search through a path to reconnect them, trying to give new life to these highly prospective areas. Along an axis those rooms are connected each beetween them: green areas to live. The agricultural, uncultivated and wood’s rooms articolate the movement through the new route, becoming attractive poles and trying to make up for the lack of community centers and landmarks that are the main problems identified. The core of the project is located in one of these green rooms: a large lot at the foot of Mount Stella that present itself as a big blank slate to be reorganized. Through the use of a grid the site was divided into bands, each one with a different function. The protagonist is the market, already present that we upgraded according to the new structure. Multi-purpose center, residences and a library are also included in this vision. The whole lot is organized according to the theme of agriculture, incorporating its harvest and signs.

OBSERVATORY AND ARTISTIC ATELIER The project area is located within the municipality of Montevecchia, more specifically in Montevecchia Alta, surrounded by Curone Park. From the preliminary analysis it was noted that the territorial structure has strongly influenced the development of settlements, preferring the heights and going to create a discontinuous urban fabric due to different altitudes in which it develops. The issues related to the isolation of the village and, on the opposite side, its environmental advantages, have represented the guidelines to the design phase in which we wanted to give an answer for the need of revitalization of the village to ensure their survival, trying at the same time to highlight the landscaping qualities that this area offers. The intention was to bring to the village a structure that invites the man to rediscover the contact with nature, regaining the ability to contemplate the natural landscape in order to be inspired, understand it and learn to deal with it to live it fully.

DESIGN MATRIX

The physical location for the placement of the project was determined according to analysis of paths crossing the small square. They have been identified two principal “ flows “ of different nature which converge in this space: one coming from nature and one from an historical and cultural route, ideally coming from the Sanctuary. The matrix of the project is defined by these flows that interpret the passage of visitors through these remarkable paths that, interacting between them, shape the existing terracing giving origin to an artificial space where the two parts meet. It follows a hybrid architecture based on nature-architecture , interior-exterior , public-private binomial. The forms are modeled from those flows resulting in a structure that becomes part of these paths itself.

VIEW

PLANIVOLUMETRIC

The design lends itself to an action of connection between these two realities by continuing the element of the square, a public space, a meeting point and departure or arrival of the paths identified. The functional distribution within the building reflects the matrix of the project and the intention of meeting justifies open spaces and the use of double heights and ramps.
