Culture Days Celebrated in Ste. Anne Culture Days is a National celebration, cities, towns, villages across Canada and the Town of Ste. Anne again participated this year. Celebrate Their Culture is used to promote harmony in communities coming together. People participate through music, display of crafts, arts, paintings and so much more. Yvonne Boulianne has organized the last 3 years of Culture Days in Ste. Anne This year it took place the last weekend of September. Artists filled the Seine River Banquet Hall with beautiful works of art ranging from photographs of local wildlife and sceneries to carved blocks of wood and bark made into fantasy castles and faces. The show also included aboriginal art and bead work and even fine wine tasting. New this year was a talent show. “This event has doubled. It's incredible the local talent that people are not aware of. I am grateful to the Comité Culturel Ste. Anne who has graciously supported me,” says Boulianne. For more info on Culture Days go to mb@culturedays.ca.

Justin Trudeau’s Visit to Ste. Anne On September 25th Justin Trudeau supported Provencher Liberals and the soon upcoming byelection by spending the day visiting the Provencher riding. The day long tour took the Federal Liberal Leader through Ile des Chenes, Steinbach, Ste. Anne and capped off by a rally where more than 400 Liberals met in Lorette to nominate Terry Hayward as the Liberal Party of Canada’s candidate and kicking off the campaign. During Trudeau’s brief stop in Ste. Anne, local resident Andrea Speirs was trying to find information on where Trudeau would be stopping after no such information seemed to be readily available, she decided to tweet Trudeau personally on twitter to see if she could get a location. “I was shocked that Justin Trudeau actually does his tweeting himself! He told me that they where almost done at the Ste. Anne Villa Youville and their last stop in Ste. Anne would be the Old #12 Restaurant,” Andrea said. “I went to go meet him and was warmly greeted by Mr. Trudeau by my name! It was nice to meet him.”

Motor Vehicle Collisions On September 11 at about 10:30 pm, Steinbach RCMP along with area Fire and EMS were dispatched to a two vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 12 and PTH 210 in the Rural Municipality of Ste Anne. Investigation revealed that a semi-tractor (no trailer) driven by a 41-year-old Winnipeg man was travelling southbound on Highway 12 when a GMC Envoy travelling eastbound on PTH 210 pulled out directly in front of the semi-tractor. The semi-tractor collided with the driver's side of the GMC Envoy causing extensive damage and injury to the 68-year-old male driver from Edmonton, Alberta. The lone occupant of the GMC Envoy was transported to a local hospital and was subsequently airlifted to Winnipeg in critical condition. The driver of the semi-tractor was not injured. Alcohol is considered a factor in this collision. Steinbach RCMP continue to investigate with the assistance of an RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstructionist.

On September 21 shortly before 1:00 am, two members of the Steinbach RCMP detachment were on patrol on Road 37 N in the RM of Ste. Anne when their police vehicle was struck by a Buick Century that had driven through a stop sign at highway speeds. Both police officers, as well as all 4 occupants of the Buick, were transported to Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach with non life-threatening injuries. Cameron Kostash (24) of Richer has been charged with 4 counts of Criminal Negligence Cause Bodily Harm, 4 counts of Impaired Driving Causing Bodily Harm, 3 counts of Uttering Threats to Kill Police, 2 counts of Failing to Comply with a Probation Order and Resisting Arrest. Kostash is being held in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Center. The investigation is ongoing.

Zucchini Apple Pie Here is a great recipe to use up some of your zucchini from the garden. I recipe pastry for a 9 inch double crust pie 2 large zucchini 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 pinch salt 1 ¼ cups packed brown sugar 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 ½ teaspoons cream of tartar 1 pinch ground nutmeg 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Directions: 1. Peel the zucchini. Cut into quarters lengthwise, then remove the seeds and cut crosswise (as you would apples for apple pie). Toss together 4 cups of chopped zucchini, lemon juice and salt. Place mixture into a frying pan and cook until tender-crisp. 2. In a separate bowl, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, cream of tartar, nutmeg and flour. Add the cooked zucchini to the sugar mixture and mix well. It will be a little runny, but that’s okay. 3. Place filling into a 9 inch pie crust, dot with butter, and place top crust on. Bake in oven at 400 degrees F for 40 minutes or until golden brown.

If you or someone you know can’t eat apples this is a great recipe, my husband can’t eat apples, but loves apple pie! So I make this recipe using zucchini and he has his apple pie but won’t get sick. No apples! Try it for someone you love.

Ste. Anne Police Board Seeking More Residents’ Input The Chair of the Ste. Anne Police Board wants more residents to give input on what they'd like to see from their local police service. Andre Lafreniere says the board held its first public meeting last week and only a few people attended. "We would have liked to see more people show up because the goal of the Police Board is to hear from the community to see what the community wants to see in policing. We act as a liaison between the community and the police." Lafreniere says the Police Board was established according to provincial legislation that requires all municipal police forces to answer to such a board rather than to their municipal council. "We're an independent board. We operate on our own. We do provide reports to town council and also are responsible to the community." He expects the community will become more involved as it comes to understand the process. Ste. Anne Police Chief Marc Robichaud likes the concept of the Police Board. "It promotes transparency in policing and I think it's another opportunity for people to be collaborative with the police department and help us. We don't always know how to do everything and we don't always know the best way to do things so it's always great to have more input on the way we can do things better." Lafreniere encourages residents of Ste. Anne to contact him or other board members to share their views on policing. He adds they will have quarterly meetings where the public is always invited to take part.
