MARK BECK THE LIGHT THAT SHINES AUGUST 1 -28, 2020

MARK BECK THE LIGHT THAT SHINES AUGUST 2020 Mark Beck’s “The Light That Shines” showcases the landscape through the lens and backdrop of our time in seclusion. The simple house structures are emblems for our lives which have suddenly contracted toward our homes. At first glance, some of these small abodes may seem uninhabitable, but there are simultaneously signs of life and the enormous healing power of the ocean and sky. These images also show an independence and interdependence between man and nature. With a certain lens, these small houses can also be seen as the perfect place, the state of eternal bliss within, a refuge from the tumult of the world. In this way, Beck’s structures are a type of totem and metaphor for the individual. The works in this exhibition are rich in artistic tradition, relying on the landscape to reveal its own narrative. Beck has been a professional painter for 50 years, studying works by the Hudson River School since he was a young boy and deeply inspired by artists like Edward Hopper among many other contemporary artists. He works to eliminate as much unnecessary detail in a painting as possible, getting at the very essence of an idea or emotion in the simplest and most direct form possible. With a vibrancy and beauty that sits along a type of silence, Beck’s paintings capture the human condition and our relationship with the healing powers of nature.
